Chelsea announced the consummation of their first foray into the summer transfer market with several weeks of last season still to play, with Werder Bremen playmaker Marko Marin sealing an off-season switch to Stamford Bridge on a five year deal reportedly worth around £6.5 million.

The midfielder will officially sign for the Blues on July 1 when the Premier League transfer window opens and, after revealing he turned down a move to Spurs, went on to proclaim he is more than confident of holding his own within the first team:

I am sure that I will play for Chelsea. Why? Because they took me to London. The management has convinced me. They have won the Champions League. The club, the scouting, the management, they have often observed me and they are convinced that I can help the team.

The Statistics

Born is Bosnia, Marin moved with his family to Frankfurt at the age of two. A spell of nine years in Eintracht Frankfurt’s youth setup paved the way for a move to Borussia Monchengladbach in 2005, and Marin eventually graduated to the senior squad at the tail end of the 2006/07 season, facing his former club on his full professional debut.

Two fruitful seasons at the Prussian outfit earned Marin a move to Bundesliga mainstays Werder Bremen in 2009, where he formed a formidable attacking partnership with Mesut Ozil and Aaron Hunt. A gifted wide player, Marin was drafted into attacking central midfield following Ozil’s departure to Real Madrid.

Never a prolific goalscorer, Marin’s best tally for a Bundesliga campaign is four, and his final season sojourn in the number 10 role at Bremen saw his output dwindle still further. However, he is a remarkably consistent provider, having returned an average of ten assists per season between 2008-09 and 2010-11 before a downturn in game time and performance last time round. In total, he played a combined 155 league games for MGladbach and Bremen, scoring 16 goals and providing 36 assists.

The Prospects

While Marin’s above-mentioned confidence will stand him in good stead if the going gets tough, his words were uttered well before Roman Abramovich splashed the cash to acquire Eden Hazard. With Roberto Di Matteo now installed on a permanent basis, the 4-2-3-1 formation is likely to continue and the two new boys merely add to an already congested area.

Hazard, along with Juan Mata, is surely a guaranteed starter, with the Belgian arriving at Stamford Bridge after being given assurances over his game time. Similar to the two marquee signings, Marin, while a natural winger, is widely considered as being versatile enough to play anywhere across midfield. A role in the attacking midfield area would afford Di Matteo a trio of tricky, ball-playing creators behind Fernando Torres, though with more signings looking imminent, question marks are already placed against his ability to hold down a regular first-team role, with the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda also thrown into the mix.

Further back in the double-pivot, there are plenty of options already at the Bridge – Michael Essien, John Obi Mikel, Frank Lampard, Raul Meireles and Ramires are all more physical types than the diminutive Marin, suggesting Di Matteo may opt to utilise him in a more attacking role. Being left out of the Germany squad for Euro 2012 certainly won’t hurt his chances of getting an early crack of the whip next term, with many of his teammates likely to be eased into preseason following their summer exertions.

Historically low on goals and high on assists, Marin is unlikely to be smiled upon by the EA PPI system. A Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuation of 8.0 or below may yet tempt investors away from Chelsea’s established midfield heavyweights like Mata and Lampard if he can establish himself in the side, while fellow new boy Hazard could well be classified as a forward – similar to former Lille team mate Gervinho upon his arrival at Arsenal last term – making Marin an intriguing mid-price alternative.

While Marin has the talent and potential to flourish in his new surroundings, his prospects may well be influenced by Abramovich’s determination to continue his squad rebuilding in light of the Champions League win in May. It remains to be seen where the new signing will fit into the complex hierarchical jigsaw of the Chelsea dressing room and for Fantasy managers, then, it’s very much a case of wait and see.

Don't rate Marin. Selfish player, rarely passes, falls over in a stiff breeze. Nice write-up though.

No can't say I have. I wasn't saying you were wrong PB just meant most players who don't like to pass much (e.g. Dempsey) have more goals than assists.

I take it he likes to go on dribbles and then gets knocked off before doing much useful with it?

Pretty much, yes. He rarely spots a better-placed team-mate until it's too late.

It's a bizarre signing by Chelsea. I travel to Bremen a lot on business and everyone there was pleased to get rid of him for the money. Marin's drifted out of the German national team, and from his perspective this move will put him back in the spotlight.

    Croatia Press Conference

    Reporter:
Congratulations on your Quarter Final win against the hosts Ukraine, your partnership with Superdunny seems to be blossoming considering you two were thrown together at the last minute, how have you found working together?

    TommyTour:
After a week partying hard in Malia letting my hair down after a tiresome FPL season, I was horrified to see I may had missed out on this major tournament, luckily Superdunny was available with other managers probably thinking he wouldn’t know what he was doing having watched Steve Kean all season. But after seeing his FPL rank I had the utmost respect for his ability. We have dovetailed perfectly with each other contributing high scores in 2 of the 4 rounds played. We let each other decide on team selection, with SD taking the safer approach it allowed me to take a few punts like Balotelli and Huntelaar but these failed to come off.

    Reporter:
Unbeaten in your group, what was your take on qualification?

    TT:
Well first up was Ireland with Christina and Sporting in charge, they argued so much it left Irish fans calling for Jedward to take over. With Sporting having Szczesny in Goal with Cech back up, they clearly had been drinking too much Guinness.
The Italians proved a tougher test, with Parmtree being on the council we expected Sepp Blatter to stitch us up, but it was his partner who threw the tie away by captaining Young over Benzema, it left us wondering if he had taken bribes again?
Only needing a point to qualify, we faced Spain the defending champions, With TW and Pratik in charge, I was confident we could win this having previously done the double over TW in the Champions League, SuperDunny was the hero Captaining Ronlado whilst I made a terrible call of selling him.

    Reporter:
You faced the hosts Ukraine in the Quarters, this was a close tie.

    TT:
After being tied 53-53 after day 1 I knew Childish Gambino and Mac was going to be tough. On Day 2 myself and SD were confident Gomez would send us in the lead with CG not having him, perhaps he gets early team news? 😉 In the end it was Captain heroic Stevie G with his retrieved balls that sent us threw.

    Reporter:
Germany seem to have the luck in this tournament so far, do you feel you can end it?

    TT:
With one of the scouts, Jonty and Euros expert Camzy its sure going to be difficult. With limited players to choose from know, it may be time for one of my punts to come off and lead us to victory? We believe, after all we are the worlds best side *according to Forca.

    GO CROATIA 🙂

Ozil and Iniesta to strengthen midfield...

No cleansheets in my opinion in the two semis and hence defenders will most probably score a maximum of 3 points...

Go for midfielders who can score goals and provide assists like Pirlo, Ozil, Shweinstieger...

I am going for a 3-5-2 myself and hence a cheap third striker is an excellent choice...

It depends a lot on what other moves the teams will make. If someone comes in at a good price and in a good position ill put them in.
But im calling this now. Podolski will be a big bust, will be classified as a striker but will play on the wing. Very likely will be overpriced as well. Unless he gets pen duty he wont be worth a place in any team, but plenty will bring him in because of name value.

Chelsea and Reading double game week.....this gives all of us a huge headstart over the casuals and completely alters any previous squad plans.

Although with a blank in gwk 3 there's a danger of overloading. Looking at 3 Chelsea and one reading.

WC in GW 3 so no problem. Well the casuals will see the double and will be revealed on the fpl site because of FFS article. They are seeing only the next fixtures so thew will notice

    Does the giroud signing mean:

    a) a switch to two up front?
    b) rotation with RVP?
    c) BYE BYE RVP?

I presume it is the latter.

With regards to the Giroud signing, the BBC article says:

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger intends to utilise Giroud in a front three alongside fellow new signing Lukas Podolski and Robin van Persie..

After last season, I could see big things this year for Walcott and AOC. Tbh I can't see the above happening, unless he decided to play Walcott in the centre, and then Song and Wilshere holding.

These types of signings may mean RVP will stay. Maybe one last attempt at success before he goes.

With the above three, Gervinho, Walcott and AOC, we're unlikely to see a lot of AOC (which is disappointing), and although Arsenal will be stronger, I'm expecting to see returns spread more evenly through their team. RVP surely can't do as well this season, same with Walcott now.

All of them will be quite pricey as well.
