Double Gameweek One Announced

While Fantasy managers prepare their squads for tomorrow evening’s Euro 2012 semi-final between Spain and Portugal, some domestic news of significant Fantasy interest broke earlier on this morning. Already, we have our first double Gameweek of the season to prepare for thanks to Chelsea’s UEFA Super Cup duties against Atletico Madrid.

The Blues have revealed that their home game against Reading, scheduled for Saturday September 1, has been moved to Wednesday August 22 and immediately hands both clubs a double in the first Gameweek of the upcoming 2012/13 campaign, with a blank Gameweek 3 to follow.

Already, this is huge news for Fantasy managers and will surely play a significant part in the structuring of plenty squads ahead of the kick-off on August 18. Robert Di Matteo’s side will now travel to Wigan before playing host to the Royals, while Brian McDermott’s promoted side also have a home game against Stoke to consider.

Chelsea, in particular, have the kindest opening schedule of arguably any side – selecting three of their players for those opening pair of games now seems a tactic that many will employ in order to ensure their Fantasy seasons get off to a successful start. The likes of Gary Cahill, Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and even Fernando Torres will likely see strong investment prior to the big kick-off on the back of today’s news.

For now, then, it’s just a quick heads-up article to bring you up to date – as always, we’ve updated the season ticker to reflect the change in fixtures.

    End of press conference with Joachim Löw and Miroslav Klose. Not much given away, as expected:

    * Klose said he didn't know yet whether he or Gómez would be playing. "I'm preparing for the match as if I were playing from the start, but it's Löw's decision." Gómez said exactly the same yesterday.

    * The German squad are going to watch "The Amazing Spider-Man" this evening. Not good.

    * Löw didn't rule out changes for Italy because "Greece didn't have the quality of the other teams" and that match required a special line-up. "Picking the same team that has always won isn't a recipe for success. there can always be changes."

    * Löw about the semi-final: "Greece isn't the standard for this game. Italy is a much different challenge."

    * Löw about the semi-final line-up: "Players will only play if they're 100% fit. But that means every player, including Schweinsteiger. We need Schweinsteiger. He is an emotional leader who thinks, and is eager to learn, to think about solutions."

    * Löw said that Germany needed to "push back Italy with their game" and that they're discussing how to disrupt Pirlo's passing.

    In theory you could have 6 DGW players in GW1 and a full 11 in GW3, as long as you have a Chelsea or Reading goalkeeper. Who is going all out?

        Maybe but one thing Chelsea do is put teams to the sword when they get a chance.

        It could always be a DGW flop but how many people lost their mini-league on the flop DGW (with Everton and Liverpool and not much happened) Not many. How many won it on the one at the end where strong teams were facing weak ones? Loads.

      I think reading goalkeeper will be cheap so might as well pick him. CAn survive gwk 3 with the other goalie.

      Ian Harte is another to consider for Reading.....

      now all we need is someone to come up with a good team to rotate with Reading to cover for the goalie and Hart.

      Two chelsea out...bench Harte and the other chelsea....still leaves a player on the subs bench for gwk 3.

                just looking at it jonty and west ham seem the best cheap option to rotate with chelsea for the first 7 games, then by gwk8 a switch of your chelsea defenders to man city defenders looks pretty good, this should see you spot on up until around gwk12

                im contemplating the treble up on both and go with aguero captain gwk1

    I do not like this DGW because it is too early. I am not too sure how Chelsea will line up and promoted clubs usually do well in the first 8/10 games.

      Torres and Mata are nailed on. Mata is their penalty taker and is first midfield name on the team sheet. I can't see Terry being 'rested' for the opening two games, or A Cole for that matter and Torres has been told by Abrom that he is first choice striker.

      A risk free approach would be be

      I'm not gambling on Hazard until I've seen him in action...can always get him gameweek 4 if he's as great as he thinks he is.

            I'm not sure I'm that bothered by prices this year. Its such a lottery first off...this double means that Chelsea's big guns have an advantage...happy to load up with mid pricers until the real value players and quality expensive ones emerge.

                last season was the first where I followed bandwagons more closely and made more early transfers. It ended up being my highest finish.

                Its a good tactic especially for the final run in when your team is worth a few million more... can end up being the difference between getting a quality player in or not.

                    4. at the end of the season man utd/man city/chelsea and arsenal players will dominate the rankings...stick with a good sprinkling of their players as the core of your team depending on their fixtures.

          Of course he is when on the pitch, but can see him benched at least a third of the games and coming off early. Mata is next in line and has possibly a better opportunity to take them given his pitch time.

              I'll keep an eye on that. If Hazard emerges as second behind Lampard then that makes him very appealing. Penalty takers for topsides are great picks as the weaker sides often foul them and they often have more experienced divers (see A Young).

        Erm, a pretty strong and successful tactic for large parts of last season was to save money on defence and spend it elsewhere... Had much more joy with expensive Euro defenders than FPL defenders so far...

    I think Man City will buy Messi & he will cost about 15m in the FPL game.

    He is a must have & I think I will captain him gw 2, 5, 6, & 9, before using my WC in week 10.

    This means I can only get another 2 City players.

    think klose will start, low now has a valid reason not to start gomez which deep deep down i reckon he preferred.
    also stick hazard in the mix for chelsea pens if lampard isn't on the pitch, he did a bit of an andy johnson last season with 9 of his 20 league goals coming from the penalty spot. as far as i remember mata missed about 3 of his 4 chelsea pens so far, a dirty ratio. i think lampard will be a safe starter though until at least the champions league starts up again in september. he was great in a deeper role in the latter champions league stages

    Well my team is finalised for the semis:

    Trap's Troops starting XI: Patricio - Alba, Hummels, Boateng - Iniesta, Fabregas, Ozil, Khedira, Reus - Torres, Oliveira.

    Gomez on the bench and will put him in for either Reus or whoever scores least, depending on both the lineup and the Spain/Portugal game. Also have 1 FT to use in case Torres/Fab are not in the lineup.
    If so:

    Torres --> Balotelli
    Fabregas --> Alonso/Pirlo

            Also, risking a German-Spanish final means my 4 transfers can be used to jig around the team more efficiently. People loading up on CR7, Oliveira and Patricio, etc are gonna find it hard to replace them. Ill probably downgrade someone expensive like Iniesta/Ozil/ Gomez to upgrade Patricio to Nuer/Casillas. Then go with a cheap midfield like Busquets, or a cheaper forward like Muller/Podolski

      Personally, I'd only go with one main keeper and hope for the best. Far too much money tied up between the posts when clean sheets look less likely than goals.

      Personally Id do Buffon --> Butland and then upgrade Marchisio to someone like Iniesta.

      If Torres starts Id also do Balotelli --> Torres
