Manchester United have finally announced the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the end of the season.

The German’s arrival is subject to work visa requirements, with Michael Carrick remaining in charge of the Red Devils until the red tape is sorted out. Rangnick could, however, be in the dugout as soon as Thursday when Arsenal visit the north west.

Rangnick will continue to work at Old Trafford in a consultancy role for a further two years beyond the end of 2021/22.

The 63-year-old’s managerial experience dates back almost 40 years and includes spells at Leipzig, Stuttgart, Schalke and Hoffenheim.

More recently he has been working as director of football for the two Red Bull clubs of Salzburg and Leipzig, with his last post being ‘manager of sports and development’ for Lokomotiv Moscow.

An early proponent of ‘gegenpressing’ and nicknamed ‘The Professor’ for his studious approach, Rangnick has been cited as an influence by the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

He has also generally favoured a 4-4-2/4-2-2-2 in his coaching career, although has dabbled with a wing-back system on occasion.

“Our idea is clear: it’s very, very similar to my almost-coaching friend Jurgen Klopp. Our football is very heavy metal, rock and roll and it’s not slow balls. It’s not square passes, back passes. Just having the ball ourselves doesn’t make sense.” – Ralf Rangnick, speaking to The Coaches’ Voice in September

Interest in United’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) assets will have been piqued by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal and now Rangnick’s appointment, with a juicy-looking run of fixtures starting in Gameweek 15/16 (depending on your view of Crystal Palace’s backline):

Man Utd finally appoint Rangnick as interim boss

It’ll be a steep learning curve for many United players – the adaptability of Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.4m), fresh from a benching in Gameweek 13, being one concern – if their new boss is to implement his ideas about pressing, although Jadon Sancho (£8.9m) would seem a good fit based on his previous experience of playing in a high-tempo Borussia Dortmund side.

We’ll have a more detailed Scout Report to come on Rangnick after the Gameweek 14 deadline has passed on Tuesday.

Wolves fixtures turn nasty from 15. Leeds the same from 16. So Hwang and then Raph.

      I'm the same as you.

      14: Marcal > Reguilon
      15: Jimi > King
16: Raph > Jota (if i haven't completely missed the boat already)

I got Hwang for his two nice fixtures - Norwich and Burnley.
But I noticed Fantasy football fix notified me that he had zero attempts v Norwich.
I am annoyed as my other choice was King. But I plan to bench Hwang for his difficult fixtures.

I also have Raphina, he has some nice fixtures. But question marks over his fitness and leeds form. I plan to keep him until gw16 and get Gallagher instead or maybe McGinn.

I considered that myself. But the thing is Dennis and King have two difficult fixtures coming up - Chelsea and Man City. Also Dennis has the African Cup of Nations question mark in a few gameweeks.
Gw16 on is the week to bring in the Watford lads - v Brentford - Burnley - Palace

    1FT - 1.1m ITB

    Sanchez
    TAA - Cancelo - Rudiger
    Salah - Son - Jota - Raph
    Antonio - Toney - Armstrong

    Foster - Livra - Veltman - Brownhill

Would like to get James in for Veltman/Livra but not sure who to downgrade. Could do it for a hit, but with WC still available, I might roll FT this week and do it for free next week.

      That’s the same my situation
I have taa cancelo and rudiger

I can bring in james this week by a hit and downgrade saka
Also cane do rudiger to james without a hit

Chelsea have a great run into the New Year so wouldn't want to trade out Rudiger who will likely be the most secure defender from rotation. Which mid/fwd would you downgrade in this squad to free up funds for James?

Very happy with the delivery of my team last GW (77 points) and can't really see a reason to do a lot of changes, but continue to monitor form and fixtures during upcoming GW's. Had two FT and did Semedo to James yesterday to catch the price rise. Current team is:

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA, Cancelo, James, Rüdiger
    Salah, Jota, Raphina, Gallagher (Gilmour)
    Vardy, Antonio (Toney)

Right decision to hold the FT and have two the upcoming GW?

Correct bench decision (Toney vs TOT away)?

    Thanks for any input.

      1. I Member

Seems like an unnecessary use of two transfers. Having kept Antonio this long I might as well wait for his fixture swing and Brownhill will have a DGW at some point.

        1. Cheeky Onion
          • 8 Years
          4 years, 18 days ago

Brownhill is the definition of bench fodder - DGW or not. Also, no knowing how long it'll be until that fixture is made up.

Antonio's early season form seems like a distant memory at the moment, I'm not convinced a change in fixtures will get him banging in the goals again.

As I said, good looking squad and no need to make any transfers. Just presenting an option the stops you from burning a FT. Bringing in Foster like stated above would be the move if you want to hold your 2 FTs

Which one of Alonso / James / Rudiger to get? I know James is in the best form but he’s extremely likely to be rotated against Watford. Alonso has less competition on the left and should avoid 1 pointers off the bench. Rudiger should start practically every game which is really important over the busy period coming up. Thoughts?

My team is basically intact, but I am wondering what to do with Saka, Livramento and Jesus. Jesus has been disappointing, but also extremely unlucky. "Naturally" I am 0.1 short of selling Jesus to Vardy, even though my team value is getting higher even after selling Antonio.

There are basically two paths for me to go. Upgrading Livra for Reguillon and play 5 at the back (especially now when James and Cancelo can be rested) or downgrade Saka to a cheapie to afford premium striker. Vardy braced, has some decent fixtures, but on the other hand, it was Watford. Lukaku and MU assets are possible future targets and Son is still a question mark for me (have him).

So what are your plans? Get Vardy or money for premium or get Reguillon and rotate?

    1. Pep's Money Laundry
      • 10 Years

If you get news about Saka's that might help you decide. I wouldn't be falling over to get Vardy either as you say it was Watford

Yea. And the plan was always to sell or bench Saka this week. After having done that writing, I realized that even if I upgrade Livra to Reg, by downgrading Saka to 4.4 I could just afford Lukaku with current prices.

        Yes.

If Foden is declared fit, is he worth holding?

    Thanks.

Is Ronaldo to Vardy a risky move that could backfire? With signs that UTD are looking like going back to counterattacking football im not sure Ronaldo is going to at the business end of those moves?

When looking at Goals Conceded vs. Expected Goals Conceded, do you generally think that it's positive for a teams defensive prospects if GC is lower than xGC? Or can it be diceptive, meaning that the team will probably revert to the mean and let in more goals on average than so far?

It's a bit of both. A team having a high xGC but low GC can be the case for a number of reasons (keeper in good form, opposition finishing being poor, etc.), but if that trend of a high xGC continues it would be a worrying sign and you'd imagine keeping GC low couldn't be sustainable.

Yeah that's a good point, look if it's a trend and take into context why that could be.
I'm thinking a bit about Palace for a 5th defender. They are the opposite and have let in more goals than expected. They rank 4th for xGC in the last 4 games and actuallt 2nd for all games so far this season.

I had been looking at Mitchell myself for a bit but held off and am glad I did. They've probably been a bit unlucky but they looked very unorganised at times against Villa from the highlights I saw. Milivojevic coming back in probably hasn't helped either
