FPL Gameweek 14 round-up: Thursday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Thursday’s Gameweek 14 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes for this midweek round of action.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.2m) missed tonight’s win over Arsenal with a hand injury after Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.3m) trod on it in Gameweek 13.

Caretaker manager Michael Carrick also provided an update on several other first-teamers, including Nemanja Matic (£4.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.1m), in an interview with MUTV:

“Nemanja (Matic) has picked up a little niggle, he felt his hamstring.

Hudson-Odoi stood on Aaron’s (Wan-Bissaka) hand the other day, so he’s in a fair bit of pain, it was touch and go but he didn’t make it for today.

Harry (Maguire) is back in the team, Eric (Bailly) did ever so well the other day but it’s a decision I had to make.

We’re just being careful with Luke (Shaw) and assessing it day by day, hopefully he won’t be too far away.”

Elsewhere, Bukayo Saka (£6.3m) made the bench after his muscle problem, and replaced Emile Smith Rowe (£6.0m) after 70 minutes, suggesting there are no further issues ahead of this weekend’s clash at Everton.

On the suspension front, it was a quiet night with the only booking arriving at Old Trafford, where Scott McTominay (£5.4m) picked up his third caution of the season.

GAMEWEEK 14 TAKEAWAYS

RONALDO ON PENALTIES AHEAD OF FIXTURE SWING

With Ralf Rangnick watching on from the stands, Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.3m) produced an impressive display against Arsenal, with his second-half brace taking him up to 12 goals in 16 appearances in all competitions since his Old Trafford return. Notably, it was the Portuguese superstar who stepped up to take United’s 70th minute penalty, which he comfortably converted with Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) watching on, in an excellent audition ahead of the Red Devils’ fixture swing:

Man Utd’s remaining fixtures in 2021

On Ronaldo taking the penalty, Fernandes said:

“We didn’t have a chat. I missed the last one so I trust him in the same way I trust myself. It was time for Cristiano to take the penalty because I took the last one and missed it. It doesn’t matter who gets on the penalty.”

However, the playmaker was able to get in on the act, sweeping home his first goal since Gameweek 4. Without penalties, he is certainly a harder sell given his premium price tag, but it is worth noting that all five of his goals this season have arrived from open-play, while his 2.93 expected assists (xA) figure ranks second amongst all outfield players, only trailing Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.0m).

SON SHINES AS CONTE INFLUENCE STARTING TO SHOW

It is still early in Antonio Conte’s reign, but Tottenham Hotspur are becoming more difficult to play through. As a result, it’s now two clean sheets in three since the Italian tactician’s appointment, with the advanced Sergio Reguilon (£5.1m) – who has now recorded a goal and assist in his last two appearances – averaging over eight points per match during that time.

This wasn’t a complete Spurs performance by any means, but they showed more resilience at the back, while their 2.16 expected goals (xG) total is the most they have achieved in a single Premier League match in 2021/22. Key to that attacking display was Son Heung-min (£10.4m), who netted his fifth league goal of the campaign and was perhaps unfortunate not to return more, having been involved in the opener.

As for Harry Kane (£12.3m), the England captain registered a couple of goal attempts, including one big chance, but it does feel that regardless of what happens against Norwich City on Sunday, most of his owners are probably already eyeing a switch to a certain Portuguese forward.

“I am not worried about Harry Kane. He played a really good game. He had chances to score, but the goalkeeper was very good. He was in every offensive situation and the point of reference. To have a player like this and to play with his commitment, desire and passion makes me very happy with his performance. It doesn’t matter if he scores as long as he plays in this way – I am delighted. Tottenham is the first thing we need to think about.” – Antonio Conte discussing Harry Kane’s performance after the game

MBEUMO BLANKS AGAIN AS BRENTFORD STRUGGLE TO CREATE

After tonight’s blank, Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m) has now failed to find the back of the net since his visit to West Ham United in Gameweek 7. Across that run of six starts, the budget midfielder has attempted seven shots in the box, though none have been big chances, while his 0.63 xG total is bettered by five Brentford team-mates, including defenders Pontus Jansson (£4.6m) and Rico Henry (£4.5m).

There is no doubt Mbeumo has been a tad unfortunate this season, hitting the woodwork on six separate occasions, though his goal threat has notably dried up. However, there is an argument – mainly due to his budget price tag – to persist a little while longer, with Brentford set to take on Leeds United and Watford next.

Bryan Mbeumo’s xG shot map since his last goal in Gameweek 7

STAT WATCH – GAMEWEEK 14

A couple of big names end the Gameweek at the top of the expected goal involvement (xGI) table, with Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and Cristiano Ronaldo registering a whopping four and three big chances respectively.

Sergio Reguilon also features, with his cross for Son’s goal key to him being so high, just ahead of Raphinha (£6.7m) and Callum Wilson (£7.4m), both of whom benefitted from penalties.

Elsewhere, Raheem Sterling (£10.6m) and budget midfielder Douglas Luiz (£4.5m) both created five chances, with Bruno Fernandes just behind on four, taking his tally to 42 for the season, more than any other player.

Watkins, king, dennis, ronaldo, son, reguilon

Dennis : plays out wing because he is a better dribbler, he cuts inside a lot. AFCON ahead is an issue, amazing enabler, good fixtures ahead.

King : plays central, on pens, no AFCON, bit costly but still an amazing enabler. Even if they blank, no problem. Its Just 5.5 ish

Watkins : showing some good form though villa Isn't. Not explosive enough yet. Not cheap by any means. With his price you would expect decent returns. Good fixtures ahead.

Ronaldo : the way ralph ragnick will be playing, its gegenpressing. Front 3 Will press like animal. Not sure ronaldo will be playing every single match in this busy schedule with this system. And if i dont captain him which i wont, 12.4 is not an amazing value.

Son : looks lively, clinical, should have scored more yesterday. Dangerous in counter attack. The Only issue is if Spurs score first, conte Will be defending more in stead of attacking, though not a bad thing to counter attack with son. 10.4 is a massive price tag. But he deserves it.

Reguilon : under conte he is a different beast. Still cheap. May be its time to good bye double chelsea/city defence and bring reguilon?

i do have Reguilon but not sure about Son with his price tag but I'm thinking of Emerson so I have both wingback and they have bonus CS.

With MF, I think I'm planning Bilva which has really good value, of course bound to be rotated but I have bench cover

Although Ronaldo is pricey, he's on pen, main attacker, and got great shots per game, so even though he's rested once or twice, the goal potential is great

      What's your opinion ?

Bilva played a lot of games. Not sure about his game time. He is an important player for city.
I love to have Ronaldo. But if i dont captain him 12.4 is a bad value if he blanks or even just make an assist

Quite happy with this team but have 2 free transfers so may as well make one. Would getting Dennis in for Broja and benching him this week be the play?

    Sanchez
    Trent, Rudiger, Reguilon, Livramento
    Salah, Son, Raphinha, Smith-Rowe
    Ronaldo - Toney

    Steele, Gallagher, Duffy, Broja

      Dennis would be good.
Could you move Duffy to someone who plays? Seems to have lost his spot (though maybe has it back through injury).

Looking at cheap defenders, is Goode nailed for the foreseeable future?
Has been solid in his last two games, that's my perspective and Brentford fans (the small amount I've read) + 4 good fixtures in his next 5.

Everton is two recoveries away from that GW 1-3 team: Mina and DCL. DCL is closer, it seems

Rafa needs them ASAP, and they'll look like a Premier League team again. Especially DCL to replace Rondon

Doucouré has already improved them a bit on his return, imo. Liverpool was always going to be a stern test, even with a fully fit squad

Agreed, form has been terrible but they almost very literally had every decent player they've got injured at once

Hopefully they give him time and I'm sure lots of people will have eggs on their faces

What specifically do you disagree with? Form was fine, injuries hit and form tailed off badly, it's rudimentary commentary but at the same time pretty obvious no?

Could/should he do better these last games even without those players? Yes nothing excuses that low tally of points but at the same time now the players are all nearly fit, and how well he did at the start he at least deserves a chance to turn it around

They had an easy fixture run at the start of the season.

And of course, he should of, you don't lose 5-2 at home to Watford and then put up a minimal fight to a Brentford side who hadn't won in 5. Please.

So you're saying there's no chance they'll improve at all with DCL and Mina back, and another run of good fixtures from GWs 18/19 to 26?

Because that's my point, especially regarding FPL... But I think I see your point that the club has managed their assets badly, which is the same for many clubs atm, to be fair. It's annoying to witness... Like Barça et al

Same could be said about West Ham and Leeds, who have contrasting fortunes atm because West Ham's only good striker is somehow still fit and Leeds' isn't

Well, yes, good players coming back should improve your team.
My point is, the improvement will still fall below that of the expectation, that Benitez himself stated at the beginning of the season.

Benitez said at the start of the season that the expectation of this squad was to qualify for Europe.

Are injuries something new, something he wouldn't have expected at the start of the season?
These very players injured were also injured throughout last season.

What the hell does qualifying Europe have to do with what we are saying

Simple, injuries affected them, now those injured players are returning we see an uptick in their form

You've turned this into a weird judge Everton as a club type thing for some reason, I don't even care about them enough re that

"Hopefully they give him time and I'm sure lots of people will have eggs on their faces"

For people to have egg on their face, that is him achieving the expectation that he was set out to do. Otherwise, he's failed.

You've chosen to interpret that that way (even after numerous responses clearly explaining this was simply a injuries badly affected them, form will improve when they return type commentary) so that's on you really

I don't even know what you are referring to, I have no real interest in Everton so I couldn't even tell you what rafas pre season goals were

To clear up, egg on face = people who want him sacked without factories injuries and pre injury form in, and I think he's a good manager and not many would do a better job

Whether he can achieve his Everton goals who knows

Well, you can 'put it on me' then if that is advantageous to you.

You must have some level of interest to make a comment that you "hope" they give him time and to state that you are "sure" lots of people will have egg on their face.

It is not "simply injuries badly affecting them"

Squad dissatisfaction, the continual selection of a past player (Rondon) despite his performances, a rigid defensive approach. This is beyond an injury list.
And yes as I disagreed above, Everton Football Club with a couple of injuries should still be good enough to avoid defeat against two newly-promoted sides.

The people who want him out, i.e. the people you want to have egg on their face are not calling for his head simply because of the injuries. Football fans are more intelligent than that, especially re. their own club.

And "please" what? we agreed on that point

Your argument has been all over the place to be honest not sure what you're even arguing for or against

Of course, good players coming back will improve the team.

But no, it will not be deemed as "fine" because it will still be a poor season.

To my knowledge, I never disputed that. Rather stating that it was being exaggerated and that the other circumstances were being neglected simply due to an injury list.

Your very first response to my comment didn't clarify that you only disagreed with a part of my comment, the egg on faces part, or that you partly disagreed with the injuries being the main reason of their terrible form, though you've kinda accepted that they are the main reason for the downturn in form, note I never claimed it to be the sole reason and the form is bad enough that the injuries alone can't justify everything

And while I agree they should recruit better etc in the context of our comments they only makes sense if you interpret my egg on faces comment as Rafa will deliver his pre season goals rather than they'll have a good enough season when everyone is back fit!

Which I think they will, players back soon and fixtures back to relatively easy= some good form think

No beef anyway I think we largely agree with everything in a roundabout way

The narrative that it is "simply" down to injuries is a bit of an overreaction to me.
This and other commentary coming out of the Everton hierarchy has been quite perplexing to me.

There are factors involved in every outcome

They started the season brightly, and almost every highly rated player involved in that start got injured, all around the same time

Mina, their best defender. Doucouré, their only engine room. DCL, their only good striker. At some point, Richarlison too

Liverpool had two spots with major injuries last season: both CBs, and we looked a shadow of ourselves for most of it

It's not the only factor, but are you saying it's not the main factor?

No, because they chose to go into the season with one "engine room", one "only good striker"
Their fixtures to start the season were also very favourable for memory.

Mina their best defender, okay, I'm not sure of their ranking personally but the difference between him and the next CB playing is nowhere near the difference between Van Dijk and Nat Phillips/Rhys Williams using your example.

They had a certain Josh King on the books last season, who they were happy to let leave.

DCL their "only good striker" was their choosing.

Also, the constant narrative re FFP, is quite ridiculous.
Yes, they have financial constraints but x6 PL clubs had a lower net spend than them in the summer window.

Maybe sell some assets, just a thought?

That's not the manager's job. Ze Austin is saying given the assets he has, the spine of the first team was ripped out and results suffered. Seems correct to me.

Your comments here don't seem to be entirely on topic, we aren't talking about Everton as a club like that, we are specifically referring to their form pre and post injuries and rafas ability to get them to win now those players are returning

Ffp what signings they made etc don't come into it

Or, nobody wants to buy them for the price that Everton are willing to sell them for?

They already overpriced many of their signings so possibly to their sales.

Feels like next week is the time to do that. Hwang to Dennis this week as both have tough opponents, latter two next week for free.

Rank these for this week - can have two (currently with c & d and can upgrade one of those to a or b)

                    a/ Sancho (CRY)
                    b/ Rashford (CRY)
                    c/ Raphinha (BRE)
                    d/ Gallagher (mun)

Depends if you want a premium striker like Ronaldo/Lukaku. With B and C your locked out of that.

Feel pretty calm about my team this week, although I’m expecting rotation to hit.

Looks like a roll and use the 2ft to get Ronaldo and boost the bench next week (probably Scarlett to Dennis)?

Hopefully you won't get third bench deep, could consider upgrading Gray to a Bowen for next week.

What we doing with Gallagher then, some decent fixtures after this week - looked to be playing a deeper role but still the most attacking midfielder of the 3.

Palace with alot of players going to African Nations

Could be a Vardy rotation this week if it's true he can't play twice a week so you'll probably be down to Livra. No obvious move to me unless there is an injury update on James.
