634x258 Pre-Season

Our new series of pre-season regulars takes a look at certain Fantasy assets who failed to replicate their previous form in the campaign gone by. Having kicked off with Brede Hangeland last time round, it’s the turn of Aston Villa’s Charles N’Zogbia, after the Frenchman turned in a bitterly disappointing season at the midlands outfit following his transfer from Wigan last summer.

N’Zogbia had arrived with huge expectations on his shoulders and, despite a 7.5 price tag, was one of the most popular midfield assets in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) heading into the start of last season. It was little wonder we had so much faith; the winger joined up at Villa having produced 146 and 167 point hauls in his previous two campaigns under Roberto Martinez, with goals, assists and a propensity for picking up bonus almost unrivalled by those in a similar price bracket.

The arrival of Alex McLeish changed all that, though. Gone was the guaranteed game time N’Zogbia enjoyed at the DW; with his new manager critical of both the player’s attitude and work-rate, he was afforded only 12 lots of 90 minutes over the entire season, with 24 starts and six appearances from the bench. McLeish’s defensive-minded tactics hardly helped win over the home fans after his cross-town move from Birmingham and his side finished the season with a mere 37 goals – the second worst attacking record in the league.

Despite the need to find the net in their battle to beat the drop, McLeish remained steadfast in his negative approach – Villa scored more than a single goal on just one occasion from Gameweek 24 onwards. N’Zogbia’s Fantasy potential and cost plummeted and, by the season end, the 6.6 priced midfielder had racked up just two goals, five assists and eight bonus points as Villa scraped their way to safety by no more than a couple of points.

The Prospects

The dismissal of McLeish and subsequent installation of Paul Lambert in the Villa Park hotseat affords us a chance to wipe the slate clean and write off last season as a temporary blip for N’Zogbia. Lambert’s attacking ethos in his first campaign in the Premier League as Norwich boss saw the Canaries rack up 52 goals – bearing in mind only the top six scored more, an upturn in attacking output could well be on the cards for the midlands outfit.

Certainly, the opening set of fixtures is likely to bring Villa into our thoughts. Lambert has been handed a particularly kind schedule in the first six Gameweeks of the upcoming campaign which affords him the perfect opportunity to pick up the points. Home clashes with Everton, Swansea and West Brom, in addition to trips to West Ham, Newcastle and Southampton rank Villa as third top in our new fixture ticker.

Norwich’s defensive frailties under Lambert saw them concede 66 goals last time out, suggesting investment in their backline may be a little less enticing but, further forward, seasoned Fantasy campaigners such as N’Zogbia are likely to flourish under the new regime. With the new man in charge promising to being the “feelgood factor” back to the club, N’Zogbia looks set to be handed a license to thrill as Lambert looks to quickly draw a line under last season.

A drop in price looks more than likely across Fantasy games after the disappointment of 2011/12, with N’Zogbia shifting to 6.5 or 7.0 in the FPL game. Perhaps all he needs is an arm round his shoulder and a manager with belief in his abilities – if Lambert can tap into the winger’s previous potential, Fantasy managers could once again have a reliable mid-price candidate for our five-man midfields in the season ahead.

Considering teams normally get a small performance boost with a new manager in place, AVB wanting to show he isn't shit to the rest of the world AND a particularly easy GMWK2-6 for the team... easy points?

Siggy will definitely be cheaper than Bale next season and with Siggy on set piece duty most likely, he'll be my spurs coverage to start the season.

    Nice going AVB!!!

No chance of him even being remotely close to 9m. If he is then you might as well pay the extra to get Bale.

Adam played the entire season and had a very high ownership by the end. Siggy only played half. Only at the end of the season people cottoned onto him and at that time, Swansea's ship as decent FPL points had sailed.

Because Adam was one of the top midfielders overall (points wise) at the end of the season. That has a massive effect on the price of a player the following season.

Karim El Ahmadi to Aston Villa.
Aston Villa agreed to a Ł2,5m fee with Feyenoord for the midfielder. The 27-year-old Morocco international has signed a three-year deal after completing his move from Feyenoord.

Karim El Ahmadi admits he has realised "a dream" by joining Aston Villa and has set his sights on re-establishing them in the top half of the Barclay's Premier League. He played a leading role in Feyenoord securing a Champions League spot last season and is keen to make a big impression at Villa Park as new manager Paul Lambert's first signing.

does anyone know something about that guy?

he was injured which is why Sweden didn't take him. I hope he goes on loan to a PL club, he could be a great budget striker option. With Aguero, Mario, Tevez and Dzeko all still at the club a loan move looks likely.

Bowstrings, he's still in talks. Contract ran out 30 June, but he and the club want to see how his knees hold up in pre-season. That might result in a 12-mth deal, otherwise he'll retire and take-up some sort of alternative role at the club.

Well, if Charles is as overweight at the start of this season as he was last year Lambert won't be able to get an arm round his shoulder. File under Finished, unfortunately. Even if he does return fit and raring to go Lambert may well rotate him anyway, just because it's what he does.

      from the horse's mouth:

Vertonghen told the club's official website: "Of course it goes through my head that there is still no clarity about my future. It is difficult and I can't say I don't think about it but that's how it is and I have to adapt.

"For now I play for Ajax and I will always give 100% for them. I am a professional athlete and despite all the issues for me it is simply the beginning of a new season. And that, for me, starts at Ajax.

"It is obviously impossible to say how long these things take but well before August 31 (the closing of the transfer window) there must be clarity. Until then I will just focus on Ajax."

In his contract it's stated he gets 15% of the selling fee. Ajax' point of view is that the 15% applies to the 20 mill buyout clause that's in the contract and because they've prettymuch agreed a 12 million deal with spurs, the 15% doesn't apply. Vertonghen OTOH feels the 15% applies to whatever fee is agreed upon by the buying club and Ajax. It's all in the wording of the contract as to who's right.
If Vertonghen decides he'll take a smaller percentage to go, the transfer will go through pretty much immediately at that point. If he doesn't, it might never work out.

no... I'm not actually... but it seemed a mistake when chelsea signed him, and it seems a bigger mistake spurs signing him... I mean... The man had only 2 season as head manager when chelsea signed him...

In fairness Bad, he's 34. How many season could he possibly have earned at this stage of his career. I take on board that there is risk involved, but that's the case with any new mgr appointment.

Fundamentally, I have a great deal of faith (and respect) for Levy and how he runs the club, which I accept, may plant me in a minority cabbage patch. Key for me, whether Spurs fans like it or not, they need to back AVB, give him a chance. It serves no Spurts purpose to do otherwise.

What other fans think is, without meaning to sound blunt, but not terribly important.

I think he'll encourage the attacking ethos that we've always (mainly) had. I think he'll concentrate on getting a better return on investment from our youth development system, so we can start pro-actively lining up replacements for a best players rather having to react when they move on (as we may see with Moddy).

Above all, I believe he has a statistical nous that our tactics and coaching can benefit from. No guarantees, but when are there ever?

I understand your point.. but I think AVB is waaaaay overrated...
he had a perfect season in a club used to win (with lots of corruption in the mix) and 2 bad seasons in other two clubs...
He is not the special two (as the press called him) because he is not special too.
Mourinho had much more experience when he arrived to Chelsea....

I haven't abused anyone, certainly not you. You claimed you had seen Giroud play enough to compare him to Chamakh, you later accepted you hadn't. Me pointing that out isn't abusive.
