Three FPL differentials to consider for Gameweek 20 and beyond

Gameweek 20 is almost upon us which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned picks at Crystal Palace, Everton and Manchester City, who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of 5% or less at the time of writing.

ODSONNE EDOUARD

ARS/CRY
  • FPL ownership: 2.0%
  • Price: £6.3m
  • GW20-24 fixtures: NOR | WHU | bha | LIV | nor

Summer signing Odsonne Edouard (£6.3m) has had a mixed start to his Crystal Palace career, producing three goals and two assists across his 15 Premier League appearances.

However, with two games against rock-bottom Norwich City in the next five, plus an away trip to Watford that still needs to be rearranged, perhaps as early as Gameweek 21 or 22, he certainly has the potential to kick-on.

The 23-year-old has had to be patient at times this season, and hasn’t always played in his natural centre-forward position, but with Christian Benteke (£6.3m) absent on Boxing Day, plus Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) suspended for Gameweek 20, his chances of a start through the middle on Tuesday certainly looks promising. It’s also worth noting that Zaha, plus Jordan Ayew (£5.8m), will in all likelihood depart for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) soon, which in turn should create further opportunities for him to play.

Edouard is currently averaging a fairly modest 2.24 shots per 90 minutes at Palace, but there is assist potential, too, as he often arrives in between the lines, looking to combine with those around him, especially box-to-box midfielder Conor Gallagher (£6.1m) and Palace’s wide players.

With a crucial run of games coming up, Edouard can make a real impact, with a home tie against Norwich handing him the perfect opportunity to get his confidence up.

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 6
  • FPL ownership: 2.6%
  • Price: £7.9m
  • GW20-24 fixtures: NEW | BHA | nor | AVL | new

After almost four months on the sidelines, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) was set to return for Everton’s game against Burnley on Boxing Day, only for it to be called off due to a Covid outbreak in the Toffees’ camp.

As a result, a move for the England international ahead of Gameweek 20 certainly carries some risk, with his level of fitness also in question, but due to the calibre of player, we think it’s worth offering an early heads up that he is back on the FPL radar.

The England international started the 2021/22 campaign in excellent form, scoring in each of the opening three Gameweeks, before suffering an unfortunate toe injury. During that time, he recorded 7.7 points per match, whilst producing 11 shots in the box and an expected goals (xG) total of 3.13, which remains a team-leading figure for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Now, with the striker set to be involved in the next league game against Newcastle United, he could be an effective differential for those willing to move early, knowing that Everton also have a kind run of fixtures to follow, which sees them take on Brighton and Hove Albion, Norwich City and Aston Villa before the end of January.

Benitez urged caution when discussing Calvert-Lewin’s return recently, but given his side’s current problems, they may have little choice but to throw him in from the start in Gameweek 20.

KEVIN DE BRUYNE

FPL Gameweek 17 round-up: Tuesday review, injury news and the things we learned
  • FPL ownership: 4.1%
  • Price: £11.9m
  • GW20-24 fixtures: bre | ars | CHE | sou | BRE

It feels strange to include a player like Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) in this section of our coverage, but having only recently recovered from Covid, the Belgian comes into Gameweek 20 sitting in just 4.1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads.

Since his return to Manchester City’s starting XI earlier this month, De Bruyne has netted three goals in his three starts, including a whopping 16-point haul against Leeds United in Gameweek 17. During that time, amongst all midfielders, he has posted league-leading totals for shots, efforts on target and created chances, highlighting his potential to both score and assist.

Rotation, just like it is for all City assets, is of course a concern, especially given his premium price tag. However, having been withdrawn on 70 minutes against Leicester City – Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) and Ilkay Gundogan (£7.3m), meanwhile, both featured for the full 90 – he will now be pushing for another start against newly-promoted Brentford on Wednesday.

Key to his appeal is that fixture, too, after the Bees’ were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Brighton and Hove Albion on Boxing Day. As a result, they have now shipped 15 goals across their last eight Premier League matches, which suggests Pep Guardiola’s attacking players will be handed plenty of opportunities to get amongst the goals.

De Bruyne has had a stop-start campaign, mainly due to injury and Covid, but is now getting back up to speed, and could be an effective differential pick in Gameweek 20 and beyond.

Ronaldo hasn’t looked like scoring, other than his penalty, vs Norwich and Newcastle. Woeful at the moment.

Not sure I am a pro but Son as cannot be sure Jota starts and United team clearly not up to match fitness based on Newcastle game after COVID outbreak

Tempted to say Ronaldo as he can’t keep blanking.

However Son probably best choice in term of form.

Jota will probably score high if he starts. If you don’t have Salah it’s one way of mitigating damage.

I’d pick Jota if I was certain he starts, which will never happen, so I’d lean towards Son.

I know ppl like to think they'll save WC til after Acon and so on. But if you look at your current team for GW21 I think many will pull the trigger to offload on chelsea, city, arsenal and fill with Spurs, lei, Everton,

I fancy Leicester to score, I think Jota starts but risk of getting hooked off early. Son probably the safest option, involved in most attacks and Spurs face a leaky Soton defence, should be good for 80-90 mins

I think this nails it on the head. TAA reliant on goal involvements as unlikely CS imo and Jota just too risky to give the armband if not starting and potentially withdrawn to give Bobby game time.

Anyone got a link to Palace forum with the Gallagher injury?

He normally plays 90 mins but noticed he was subbed 76 mins after the 3rd goal.

On the other hand, the game was over and Palace was down to 10. He could have been saved for the Norwich game which is 2 days after and he is on 4YCs 18 league games played.

Source was this page, from a user with a good rep there: https://www.cpfc.org/forums/showthread.php?t=285475&page=4

      "Conor's out for tomorrow"

Here's his post history (may need an account): https://www.cpfc.org/forums/search.php?searchid=4221867

If you can't see, he has got not perfect albeit pretty close to team news recently:
      - "Guehi, Vicente, Eze, Benteke and Olise all out with Covid."
      - "They all attended the same party. Lucky escape with Conor."

All of those were not in the squad for the Tottenham match. Guehi was on the bench (usually a starter).

As to why Gallagher was subbed in the Spurs match, it could have been with the intention to rest him for the next match, or because he was on 4 YCs and he's close to a suspension or because he supposedly took a knock to the knee at one point in the match (not sure if he misses out it'll be due to this, or a later-positive covid test

      Also:
      - "Butland starts tonight. Guaita has dislocated his finger."

Any idea what the smart move here is? Got bare 11 if they all start. I’m thinking Lacazette out, but for who? Thinking maybe Broja to save cash, or Edouard.

    Sanchez
    TAA - Alonso - Cancelo - Dalot
    Salah - Jota - Foden - Gallagher
    King - Antonio

    Lacazette - Saka - Marcal

Consensus is Ramsdale > DDG is worth a -4 long term yeah?

Fixtures (quality and count) make up for MU being mildly terrible?

    Is Lloris worth the extra?

Based on today I’d pick Lloris. Although if got Chelsea defenders could get regulion in future weeks. With De Gea atm.

I think DDG is worth it- on basis Ramsdale gets 0 in 20, Arsenal fixtures toughen and there are 2 blanks coming up. Probably week 28 when you would want back

Lloris over DDG means a dead 8th attacker vs Broja.

Which is a marginal thing but also a real thing given my squad set up.
      Probably go with DDG. Hmmm.

Rough: Opted to keep Salah so couldn't afford the keepers I wanted (de Gea/Ramsdale) but slept through the deadline so didn't bring in the only keeper I could afford - Sanchez.

Smooth: Through in the cup despite only fielding 10 while my opponent used Free Hit - going into the final game I needed his captain Ronaldo to play and blank. 42 not much to shout about but Smith Rowe is looking like a season keeper.

      Rough - Ronaldo (C)

      • 8 Years
      2 years, 3 months ago

I've not suffered as much as some, but here are a few points cobbled together to nearly make a story.

Smooth: I spent a 4 point hit to sell 2 blankers for Ronaldo (1) and Lamptey (6), gaining me 3 points

      Rough:
      - I transferred captaincy from Lacazette (11) to Ronaldo (1) for a loss of 10 points. Net transfer loss of 7 points
      - Jesus didn't play, bringing me down to 10 players
      - James' own goal had the effect that he didn't play (0pts)
      - My City triple up Jesus, Bernado and Cancelo managed a single assist between them in a City team that scored 6 goals

      - I've now owned City players for 52 of the possible 57 FPL-fixtures this season. City, a team with 50 goals and only 15 conceded.... Well... I've seen 10 (19%) no-shows! 24 (46%) games of only 0-3pts! Thankfully, I've just managed to catch a few hauls, bringing the average when they do appear in my XI up to 4.5 PPM (excluding captaincy). What a waste of money and hope!

      Cancelo: 18*, (14), 12, 7, 6*, 4, 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 0, -
      Grealish: 8, 6, 6, (3), 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, -, -
      Jesus: 5, 5, 2, 2, 1, -, -, -
      Torres: 18, 3*, 3, 2, -, -, -
      Foden: 18, 6, 3, 2*, 1, -
      Bernado: 6, 2, 2, 1
      Mahrez: 6, 4, 2

      () = Benched
      * = Captained

      - So I've switched things up on my WC this week (GW20), looking to continue on with a double of Cancelo and Laporte (should I actually be learning something?). But... when I confirmed my WC, something didn't work. I quickly built it again and confirmed again, but it turns out the prices must have been changing, so I missed out on price rises. Not only that, in my haste, I sold James before squeezing an extra 0.1 out of him simply because I saw James at Leeds is on -96.6 on FPL Stats! So I lost about 0.3 instantly from trying to be proactive late on Christmassy weeknight. Oopsie 😀

      Smooth : 59 pts (-4)

Despite the COVID rubbish, I have really enjoyed this season where I could fulfil all my Fpl fantasies. Ticked another off my list where I have captained players from all 4 positions in one season.
Smooth: Ramsdale (C), Cancelo, Reguilon, Emerson Royal, Gundogan, Bowen.
Rough: Rashford, Pukki, Watkins. Liverpool cancellation was also a kick in the shins. 50 points and a neat green arrow.

All rough. Stick to my plan of just using transfers toward a GW22 BB instead of FH. Took a -4 instead: Salah/Dennis out for Bowen/Ronaldo(c).

Jesus and Henry no-shows gave me 8 players and 22 points (before the hit!). And of course, most of the popular FH choices returned. GW rank of 6.5M. Going to be stubborn and continue to stay the course... patience has to pay off eventually, right?

Decided to use my free hit at 1pm boxing day.

Rough: only made 2 changes from first draft fh team. Switched mahrez to Foden at 10 past 1. Tried to switch zincenko to laporte at 1.27 but site crashed. This cost me 18 points.

Smooth: hit 69 points for the gw anyway and now sitting at rank 1575. Tierney, reg, lloris, kdb captain, lacazette and son are all invited to my new year's eve party

Very smooth GW. Decided to FH an hour before deadline (officially) finished. Tinkering ended about 10 mins before deadline. Decided to go without CR7. Brought in Lacazette, Son (c), Saka, Kane, Mahrez and KDB.

Brought in two playing GK but forgot to put the one I intended to start in the starting XI before the site crashed but that worked out too as had Sanchez over DDG.

And I have Salah, Jota, TAA (and hopefully Foden) to do the business this GW

Overall 85 points and overall rank rose by just under 385k (760k to 375k)

Rough - Gutted I couldn't get my transfers through near deadline. Salah/Antonio to Son/Ronaldo(c).

Smooth - Cap was left on Saka. 15 points gained and a transfer saved from what my moves would have produced with only 8 players.

Rough: Seaso over for me after worst GW ever. 230K rank drop after taking a -8 , no way saved FH and Salah can make that up.

      Smooth: -

      Smooth - N/A

Rough - Decided against a free hit as my team looked ok. Took the opportunity to try and get ahead of the game and took out Salah, Gallagher and Watkins (correctly anticipating a blank the next week with Leeds knackered) for a -8. 5 points from 4 defenders with James losing his and Alonso's clean sheet. Son returned but Foden benched again, Bowen got a booking and the new addition Martinelli blanked in a 5-0 win. Up front Wilson got inured again and my other transfer, captain Ronaldo, got me 2 points after it was doubled.

Total of 22 points post hit whereas my free hit team would have got around 70 at least. Also have no Salah this week where he could go mad, Martinelli has a game postponed and Ronaldo looks awful so I lost out on 50 points this week and my team is also in worse shape going forwards. Rank has quintupled this week alone after a few poor weeks leading up to it. I suppose a smooth could be that I've got 2 free hits left, I bet everyone is well jealous of me.

Yes I agree . Comments on here have convinced me to hang onto Ramsdale and get a second keeper. Is there not an option that sells Silva and Steele? Eg Sanchez. Or maybe you live without a keeper and just get Son

Im typically .1 off being able to do Steele, Silva and Lacazette out for Sanchez, Son and Broja. Think i'll end up doing the Son and Broja moves and then either Ramsdale to de Gea or just go without a keeper.
