Three FPL differentials to consider for Gameweek 20 and beyond

Gameweek 20 is almost upon us which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned picks at Crystal Palace, Everton and Manchester City, who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of 5% or less at the time of writing.

ODSONNE EDOUARD

ARS/CRY
  • FPL ownership: 2.0%
  • Price: £6.3m
  • GW20-24 fixtures: NOR | WHU | bha | LIV | nor

Summer signing Odsonne Edouard (£6.3m) has had a mixed start to his Crystal Palace career, producing three goals and two assists across his 15 Premier League appearances.

However, with two games against rock-bottom Norwich City in the next five, plus an away trip to Watford that still needs to be rearranged, perhaps as early as Gameweek 21 or 22, he certainly has the potential to kick-on.

The 23-year-old has had to be patient at times this season, and hasn’t always played in his natural centre-forward position, but with Christian Benteke (£6.3m) absent on Boxing Day, plus Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) suspended for Gameweek 20, his chances of a start through the middle on Tuesday certainly looks promising. It’s also worth noting that Zaha, plus Jordan Ayew (£5.8m), will in all likelihood depart for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) soon, which in turn should create further opportunities for him to play.

Edouard is currently averaging a fairly modest 2.24 shots per 90 minutes at Palace, but there is assist potential, too, as he often arrives in between the lines, looking to combine with those around him, especially box-to-box midfielder Conor Gallagher (£6.1m) and Palace’s wide players.

With a crucial run of games coming up, Edouard can make a real impact, with a home tie against Norwich handing him the perfect opportunity to get his confidence up.

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 6
  • FPL ownership: 2.6%
  • Price: £7.9m
  • GW20-24 fixtures: NEW | BHA | nor | AVL | new

After almost four months on the sidelines, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m) was set to return for Everton’s game against Burnley on Boxing Day, only for it to be called off due to a Covid outbreak in the Toffees’ camp.

As a result, a move for the England international ahead of Gameweek 20 certainly carries some risk, with his level of fitness also in question, but due to the calibre of player, we think it’s worth offering an early heads up that he is back on the FPL radar.

The England international started the 2021/22 campaign in excellent form, scoring in each of the opening three Gameweeks, before suffering an unfortunate toe injury. During that time, he recorded 7.7 points per match, whilst producing 11 shots in the box and an expected goals (xG) total of 3.13, which remains a team-leading figure for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Now, with the striker set to be involved in the next league game against Newcastle United, he could be an effective differential for those willing to move early, knowing that Everton also have a kind run of fixtures to follow, which sees them take on Brighton and Hove Albion, Norwich City and Aston Villa before the end of January.

Benitez urged caution when discussing Calvert-Lewin’s return recently, but given his side’s current problems, they may have little choice but to throw him in from the start in Gameweek 20.

KEVIN DE BRUYNE

FPL Gameweek 17 round-up: Tuesday review, injury news and the things we learned
  • FPL ownership: 4.1%
  • Price: £11.9m
  • GW20-24 fixtures: bre | ars | CHE | sou | BRE

It feels strange to include a player like Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) in this section of our coverage, but having only recently recovered from Covid, the Belgian comes into Gameweek 20 sitting in just 4.1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squads.

Since his return to Manchester City’s starting XI earlier this month, De Bruyne has netted three goals in his three starts, including a whopping 16-point haul against Leeds United in Gameweek 17. During that time, amongst all midfielders, he has posted league-leading totals for shots, efforts on target and created chances, highlighting his potential to both score and assist.

Rotation, just like it is for all City assets, is of course a concern, especially given his premium price tag. However, having been withdrawn on 70 minutes against Leicester City – Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) and Ilkay Gundogan (£7.3m), meanwhile, both featured for the full 90 – he will now be pushing for another start against newly-promoted Brentford on Wednesday.

Key to his appeal is that fixture, too, after the Bees’ were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Brighton and Hove Albion on Boxing Day. As a result, they have now shipped 15 goals across their last eight Premier League matches, which suggests Pep Guardiola’s attacking players will be handed plenty of opportunities to get amongst the goals.

De Bruyne has had a stop-start campaign, mainly due to injury and Covid, but is now getting back up to speed, and could be an effective differential pick in Gameweek 20 and beyond.

Hey there folks. Making a rare cameo, I guess because I am about to do the unthinkable.

I am going to captain Gabriel Jesus and it is going to work. I just wanted it in print for reference after it works.

    1) Didnt play a minute in GW19. He has to start. He has yet to not start in 2 straight matches in league play this season and, given the fixture congestion, I cannot see how Pep suddenly picks now to reverse that trend. Was a non-starter in GWs 1, 8, 12, 15, 17, 19. As you can tell of late, there's been a pattern.

    2) Manchester City are scoring for fun and Brentford's defense has given up 2 goals at least in 9 of their last 10. Ever since losing Raya, they simply are not very good at the back. I feel 4 goals in this game is a conservative estimate.

    3) The man is simply due. No one can sit here and feign shock if Jesus had a goal and an assist against Brentford. Or a brace. Or more. It's his turn, damnit.

    4) Having not FH GW19 and sold Salah, I have to take a chance on something to counter the lack of Salah. The reason MCI attackers are seldom captained comes simply down to fear of a non-start. Otherwise, they'd get so much more backing. Again, barring a complete shift from a pattern in a time where it makes the least sense to, I HAVE to believe he will start.

Thank you for attending my TED talk.

But would you be shocked if he came good?

I took the community three months to finally cave in and say B Silva was fantasy relevant, just in time for him to start blanking.

The fact is, all of MCI's attacking players are capable of bagging points. Jesus is due. I refuse to believe he can't finish. Every week, someone's anointed as the "guy", and then another guy or two winds up hauling. It's like betting on a rainy day in Seattle. Sure, it might not rain, but it can't not rain forever. 😉

It's true, but Bernardo had a few things in his favour. He was one of the few that was getting minutes practically every week and due to the players out he often ended up playing in roles further up the pitch, including false 9 and in one where he wasn't playing at RW but was required to move there a lot (the Watford game was the prime example, where he scored two while having Grealish, Foden and Sterling ahead of him). With Jesus he's being shuffled between CF (where honestly he hasn't really ever looked great apart from his first half season) and RW (where he looked extremely good for a while this season), but he has Mahrez breathing down his neck until AFCON after a period where he was a bit out of favour. He also seems to be drifting infield a bit less with more of the CMs doing it with the likes of KDB back now. I'm not saying he couldn't haul, but honestly I think I would be surprised if he did compared to the others

*the CMs are moving forward more which is meaning Jesus is playing a bit more wide I mean.

Regardless, I wish you luck if you stick with it, fortune favours the brave

Now this, this is good banter.

I can't argue with facts, Nate. It is a radical call on my part when all is said and done, but I guess I'm feeling something.

Maybe going Jesus over Salah in GW18 and being right about it, albeit a few extra points, but still right, has me thinking I'm a fortune teller. And maybe I'm just feeling reckless right now, because, like last season, when Covid was on the rise, my passion for the game waned. I really wish they would have shut the league down a couple of weeks ago. I just cant get the same kind of "fun" when a pandemic is influencing the game.

Cheers for the thoughtful reply on this. Just saw a stat that Son has a better scoring record against Soton than any other side...if my bravery does expire near the deadline, at least I feel good about who to turn to.

I've been in a similar state to an extent, before the postponements I felt I was doing well and plans made sense, and I was at 250k rank. I'm currently at 750k after having been affected by all weeks with postponements (including the snow one) and having had to take hits to bring in players that then miss games has honestly taken me out of the experience a bit. Especially looking at some rivals it has been annoying, one has only had to take -4 overall since that Spurs v Burnley week if he needed to take hits to field a full team each week, I've had to take -12 to just have consecutive weeks of playing 10 (9 this week) and I've felt a slight recklessness a bit too (last minute on last deadline I decided to captain Foden over Cancelo even though I always tell myself to not make last minute changes to whatever my normal thoughts are, although still matched Ronaldo!).

I think I would have much preferred that week or so break Frank wanted, I think in FPL terms it would have made a fair difference and left us with an extra FT and planning should have been easier. Hopefully our luck will turn a bit.

GW19 was rough. But Im looking at my side right now, fingers crossed no further matches will be called off, and I have to think GW20 will go much better. Other than a lack of Salah, the team looks great. Hope your arrows are green for the coming round. Best thing is, such a short turnaround, we could be only a few hours away from popping champagne.

These are precisely the comments I wanted to see for returning to in a couple of days. Jesus has had a proper full rest and is still very much key to Pep. Only B Silva has more league minutes among MCI's attacking players.

Easy to say "light ribbing" when you are the giver and not the receiver, isn't it? You say what you want to me and you get to decide how I should take it, right? When I've never done anything to you? You basically shot me down with a jab, having never talked to me before, and act like we've been mates and this is all typical. Then the "toughen up" line, which just cements you are just kind of a gaslighting jerk.

You "ribbed", unprovoked, twice. I replied. Then you had to come on back and give me a lesson instead of just letting it sit, cause you need to throw a jab AND win. I can't stand that "have it both ways" attitude. There's nothing to toughen up. I will continue to find the likes of you annoying and disingenuous when communicating online, because that's what you are.

I don't really understand the logic of those without Salah captaining Jota - seems very passive as Salah captains will most likely ruin you if Jota does deliver (as they have both). This kind of damage control captaincy has absolutely no upside.

I'm more surprised that nobody seems to think Firmino could displace him in the side. Think people have quickly forgotten how much Klopp likes and admires Firmino and how good he is in his role since he's been injured, and he had a full game against Leicester in the cup last week so he's ready to start games again. Not to say Jota couldn't come on off the bench and score or that Firmino definitely will start, but it just doesn't seem to be being mentioned by many

      Alli and short turnaround.

Played a full 90 while Kane and Son were taken off, Alli didn't come on off the bench. Also the small possibility of Bergwijn or even Ndombele playing in his role too (both of those were also benched)

With no Salah, is the safest approach to go with a pool player as (c) incase Liverpool smash Leicester and it provides cover, if so:

    1. TAA (lei)
    2. Jota (lei)

    Otherwise,

    3. Son (sou)
    4. Ronaldo (BUR)

    Cheers.

I’m on TAA (c) and Son (vc)… think it’s between them two isn’t it. Jota should start but is a risk, and also could be subbed off early… so leaning towards TAA and Son

Leicester can't defend but they can score so not TAA

Jota chance of being subbed early or rotated for Firmino that’s my concern

Leicester also poor at defending set prices

On Son too but TAA is tempting. Think Leicester will score though so you’re relying on attacking returns (which could still be good).

Yeah good chance Leicester score, just feel need (c) cover in the Liverpool game as if Salah hauls then chance either TAA or Jota is involved or scores too… do you get me

    Ramsdale*
    TAA James Alonso Cancelo Livramento
    Son Rashford Foden Gallagher
    Antonio

    Foster*; Brownhill, Lacazette*, Watkins*

1ft and 1.0itb. I will 100% sell Lacazette but is it also worth selling Ramsdale for -4? Arsenal have City and Spurs after the blank this week and then blank 2 times in 3 gameweeks soon after.

I am waiting upon some news atm. Does anyone think RJames could be at risk? He seemed to be carrying a knock in the last game. I seem to be in limbo with a few possible non starters. Foden Gundo Alonso RJames Guaita.

    A few questions.

    1. Any new postponement rumours at this time?
    2. Are we likely to have any pressers before deadline?
    3. Can we reasonably hope no news is good news?

    Thanks.
