Scoutcast: New Year’s FPL resolutions

Joe, Andy and Seb help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for Gameweek 21 and the New Year.

With Covid continuing to wreck the fixture schedule planning is proving tricky in FPL this Christmas. The imminent scheduling of Double Gameweeks is making team tweaks especially difficult.

To ensure their content stays relevant ahead of Gameweek 21, our Scoutcast trio focus on their New Year FPL resolutions as they look ahead to 2022. This involves pinpointing the changes they’d like to make in the way they play the game.

This chat also takes in the community’s own resolutions, with the importance of managing Fantasy Football in the context of family life mentioned by Joe and many others.

Meanwhile, Seb’s resolution takes in the value of hits, while Andy is keen to avoid planning in such uncertain times.

The Scoutcasters look back on their mixed fortunes in Gameweek 20 and over the festive schedule so far.

They also reveal their teams for the first Gameweek of 2022, frisk the rest of the upcoming fixtures and check in on the Community Team, which they are managing on behalf of a top manager who is taking a break.

Elsewhere, the live chat community is called on to pose some quick-fire questions to our Scoutcasters, who do their best to give one word answers to the key issues facing Fantasy managers. This section will be a new regular feature as the Scoutcast team tap into the knowledge of the live chat crew even more in the months ahead.

This week’s live show took place on Thursday December 30. Be sure to subscribe to our Youtube channel to get notified of future live episodes. It is also available as a podcast.

Joe Lepper (FFjoe) on Twitter advertising that he has got 7 top 10k finishes. How big is this achievement, really? Playing for around 15 seasons (?), and in the first 10-11 of these a top 10k is like top 500k now.

It's a fair point. Alot of these experts are living off past glory. I'd say the last 3 years is a good measure. There's also a few 'experts' who have literally only had one good season where they finished in the top 50 but are hopeless aside from that.

I was not aware that he never finished outside the top 100k. More impressive than nailing 5 top 10k when 1 mill were playing.

First of all, before shots are fired: I love the guy and watched the scoutcast every week a couple of years ago. Just curious about how good 7 top 10 k finishes really is, when timeframe taken into consideration.

FPL used to be either captaining Gerrard or Lampard, and playing against only a million players, 90% of whom didn't realise FFSCOUT existed.

I agree re consistency ... but someone called 'Luke' made a good point for those who 'try to win' i.e. gamble with high risk high reward regularly and ending up much lower rank ... so consistent is good but perhaps not everything

My view is that his record reveals a solid player with impressive consistency. His style doesn't lend itself to the highest possible ranks imo (and having listended to hima fair bit I think he'd be cool with that).

More importantly to me - and relevant to his credentials as an expert - is that he provides broad insights for a listener/reader to interpret and use in their decision-making

Agreed. I used to do well, but have regressed as the competition has increased and so many people have the template team, which pretty much guarantees top 50k and top 10k maybe every 2 years. I really only appreciate players who get close to the top, eg Magnus, LR, Mark.

My view is that 15 years playing and that many good ones are very impressive. And while there are more players now than it were, i think the quality of those who played back in say 2010 were as good as now and this New element with stats and socisl media etc is can also be viewed upon as tools that makes it easier to get the right players, they did not have that much info. So while it can be difficult these day to absorb and analyze stats and info on social media you had less info and less to go on for your decisions back then.
I have a suspicion that there are more players noe that plays that are not primarily interested in football but are good with measuring numbers and stats.
I think its difficult to compare 2010 fpl with 2015 and beyond. Almost like 2 different games

Cheers for your reasonable reply! I her what you’re saying. Just think that the active player base, and percentage of ghost teams, made it quite easy to reach top 10k back in the days. Now you get info about deadlines etc. thrown at you.

It’s never been easy getting top 10k. Years ago there were the majority on here that couldn’t do it when the numbers playing were much less. It’s as difficult now as it’s always been imo.

Agree. Previously knowing when the DGWs were and keeping an eye on line-ups before the GW started was enough of an advantage in the absence of data. Also knowing the number of transfers your ML players were making before the deadline. Different game now.

But no one is really a 'pro' as it's just a single assigned title.

You have systematically calculated rankings like the Hall of Fame on here or LiveFPL's 'Top 1000 Legendary Managers' and you'll find lots of people who post on FFS will be on both.

That includes all 3 of the people in this thread (Da Min, me and you) yet as far as I know none of us are calling ourselves professional yet by other peoples calculations we (mainly you and Da Min) are literally in a tiny percentage of the most successful people at this game in the world.

That was supposed to be 'self assigned title', doh!

Let's Talk (Andy) is probably one of the only true professionals in that he is literally using FPL as a day job, and that doesn't rely solely on his ranks although they obviously helped him get the followers.

Joe has always been very humble about his 7 top 10k finishes. He is really digging out the wrong person.

It's pretty normal for FPL Twitter accounts to show their rank. I don't see this as 'advertising'.

Joe's rank history shows he's a very consistent manager which tells you he knows how to play the game.

      Let's move on.

Prefer stuff like hall of Fame and all time manager rank tools (https://www.premierfantasytools.com/best-fpl-managers-list/) as they give more weight to more recent seasons. Can't blame anyone for stat-padding, though. Top 10k finishes did used to be a lot easier mind.

Yeah posted about this last game, but the gravitas Ronaldo has is simply too much for this United team that’s filled with young attackers like Sancho Greenwood Rashford etc

Consciously or subconsciously they’re just reverting to find Ronaldo and hope he can do something. A rotation strike force of cavani Greenwood martial Rashford would’ve been great this season for continued development and what Ole was hoping for. United basically forced to buy Ronaldo when City was going in for him

Guys a question. If you have 2 transfers banked going into a week you use a free hit, when your team returns to what it was before the free hit gave you lost the additional banked transfer?

Conte was his manager at Inter Milan where the system suited him perfectly. Kane would fit the Chelsea system well and it would mean staying in London.

can this team "survive" one more gw?

    Sanchez
    taa cancelo livra
    jota foden silva bowen
    ronaldo antonio edouard
    steele smith-rowe james white

    1ft 2.1 itb

    am thinking

leicester game on: smith rowe to madison and captain him

leicester game off: smith rowe to moura

also could so silva and james to son and 5m defender for a hit

    thoughts? thanks

It’s not as bad as it sounds….potentially. They are in for a couple of full backs that could help tighten them up considerably, plus there’s the potential that Branthwaite might start next game and he’s 4.0. I hope he does as I’ve wanting it for the past year myself, he’s decent and has goal threat. It’s all ifs but and maybes at the moment and perhaps it’ll be too late by the time we know what’s happening. One to watch basically.

    What's happening at Chelsea 😮

    Romelu Lukaku to SkySport:
"Physically I am fine. But I'm NOT happy with the situation at Chelsea. Tuchel has chosen to play with another system - I won't give up, I'll be professional. I am not happy with the situation but I am professional - and I can't give up now"
