Tottenham’s restructuring program under new head coach Andre Villas-Boas shows no signs of abating, with yesterday’s announcement that Ajax skipper Jan Vertonghen will join the north London outfit this week, subject to a medical.

The centre-half is the second new arrival in the past few days, following the acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson, and will bolster a backline that has already lost Ryan Nelsen and is likely to see Ledley King retire in the close season. A long-term target of the club, Vertonghen was linked with a move to White Hart Lane under the Harry Redknapp regime but the club’s interest continued after the departure of their former manager – the Belgian is expected to be crucial to the first-team cause next term and revealed he is happy to finally seal the move after months of speculation:

I am very relieved. It went on for a long time, but I’m glad I’m a Tottenham player right now and I’m looking forward to playing for the club. I am 25 years old now and I feel ready to play in the Premier League. I have heard a lot of good stories from my Belgium team-mates. I think I’m ready.

The Statistics

Initially, Vertonghen spent time with VK Tielrode and Germinal Beerschot in his native country before joining the Ajax youth academy as a 16-year-old in 2003. Acquired as a defensive midfielder, the 6 foot 2 inch Belgian was shifted into the back-four and, while his natural position is left-sided centre-half, he is versatile enough to slot in at left-back should the need require.

Vertonghen made his debut for the Amsterdam outfit in the 2006 campaign, turning out on a couple of occasions before being sent out on loan to Eredivisie strugglers RKC Waalwijk, where he made 12 appearances and grabbed three goals. Returning to his parent club the following season, Vertonghen established himself as a regular first-team fixture and played under the likes of Marco Van Basten, Martin Jol and Franck De Boer over his time at the Dutch outfit.

A keen eye for goal and set-piece ability saw the Belgian produce impressive attacking returns at Ajax. Over a total of 155 league appearances he netted 26 times and provided nine assists, with the 2011/12 his most eye-catching to date; Vertonghen was voted Dutch Player of the Year as his eight goals helped De Boer’s side to the Eredivisie title.

The Prospects

It’s difficult to ascertain just how much the arrival of Villas-Boas will affect Spurs’ prospects in the season ahead. The north London outfit racked up 14 clean sheets in Redknapp’s final campaign in charge but the high defensive line favoured by the new man in charge will have many Fantasy managers thinking twice over investing in their backline.

Chelsea’s failure to adapt to Villas-Boas’ demanding pressing game saw them picked off on the counter on a consistent basis last time round – the Blues returned just seven clean sheets over his 26 games in charge but Spurs are determined to bring in younger, more dynamic players in order to implement the new manager’s game plan. Vertonghen and the likes of Younes Kaboul and Steven Caulker won’t struggle for pace, while the speed of Kyle Walker on the right will be a valuable asset to the new system, suggesting their defence may find it a little better than John Terry and co to adapt to Villas-Boas’ philosophy.

In addition to his goal contribution, Vertonghen is what you would expect of an Ajax academy graduate. A superb reader of the game, he is calm on the ball with outstanding distribution from the back, which is likely to kick-start quick counter attacks as Spurs look to break at speed – a crucial element of the philosophy expected under Villas-Boas. The centre-half’s strong, all-round game is set to see him priced highly across the Fantasy games next term – a valuation of 6.0 – 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) can be expected.

Certainly, Spurs’ favourable opening schedule affords Vertonghen a chance to demonstrate his capabilities. While a trip to Newcastle in Gameweek 1 seems tricky, the following four matches (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR) look superb and are likely to see substantial Fantasy investment come Tottenham’s way. The Belgian’s contribution at both ends of the pitch suggests he could be a beneficiary of the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index and, providing Villas-Boas can replicate his impact at Porto as opposed to Stamford Bridge, Vertonghen could very well prove to be a strong value option for the season ahead.

Davis will be cracking Soton signing, I've always liked him, really dynamic with a decent eye for goal. He could bring some much needed Prem savvy to the younger, less experienced lads at St Mary's.

A cheap mid filler I'll be looking closely at once FPL kicks-off. You pleases SouthCoast?

Don't think there will be a problem with the transfer (maybe some form of compensation).

Very pleased. Fellow fans also like him. Can't say I've seen enough of him myself but he brings bags of experience which is exactly what we needed.

What's he like with set pieces etc? (assume you're a Rangers fan/Irish?)

Not at all, a Spurs man, but remember him from his early Villa days, before Lawrie ruined him. Don't think set-plays were his strength, he was more a box-to-box battler, perhaps similar to his Bolton namesake, or the Rep Ireland lad, whose name escapes me, Blackburn player? Keith Andrews.

Hope it does go through, I'm sure it's just background paperwork given Gers' plight.

£15m? Behave more like £8-8.5m if he signs pre-FPL-opening I reckon.

Problem is, Evra doesn't just vanish so I can't see how he won't be a rotation risk ... and I also can't see how he'd be on pens, given that Arteta used to be ahead of him at Everton. He'll get plenty of assists when he plays though.

yeah but it was usually Bosingwa(horrible defender at the best of times), Luiz(basically the same), Terry and Cole. This usually left Terry back as the only defender on the counter attack and then he just fell over and they score

I'm just thinking aloud here, so help me out.

It seems that a standard defensive strategy is 2 x big hitters (7m) and 3 x rotating cheapies (4m). That is a total cost of 26m. Using this strategy means that you will play your big hitters in almost every game (including difficult away games) and always play at least one cheapie with very little chance of a cs

For the same price I could get 1 x 6m and 4 x 5m. So I could potentially get 1 x spurs, 1 x toon, 1 x sun 1 x stk 1 x ful (i'm just saying teams here, i haven't checked out the rotation), so you could probably manage it so you have 3 x good defenders with good fixtures every week. For the same price as the first strategy.

On the face of it, it seems like it could be a good strategy. Does it make sense for me to look into this further, or am I missing something obvious?

I've tried similar in the past with mixed results. It relies on you making the right calls every week (how many posts do we see every season bemoaning points left on the bench) whereas the 2 big hitters remove some of that headache.

I'd also not go quite so far as to say "very little chance of a cs" from the cheaper players but I take your point.

I think it's a valid strategy but by no means guaranteed success. It's basically an extension of the Hart + cheap vs. rotating keepers conundrum. Each to their own.

It's a sound strategy, but at the start of the season I might opt for a few 4.5/5 defenders until it's clear where the value players are. Probably an early WC again for me to gain team value and bring in the 'new Swansea' defenders.

No, the numbers add up and it's a valid strategy for sure.. Your problem there will be, who to bench each week.

If you're rotating 3 x £4m or thereabouts though, you've still got a decent chance of a CS ... e.g. if you have 1 x REA, 1 x WHU, 1 x SOU - I reckon each week one of them will have a nice fixture. If you did this with the promoted clubs last season you would have done pretty well.

I'm probably something like; £6.5m/£5.5m/£5m/£5m/£4m so somewhere in between.

That was my first idea, but then it proved pretty difficult to find 3 good fixtures every week, for you 4 good defenders. If all 5 have good cs potential, i should be able to find 3 good fixtures.

I'm guessing that most weeks the decision would be easy enough as 1-2 of the teams should have poor fixtures. If 4 have good fixtures then I would play 4 at the back. I love playing the fixtures anyway, so this might be a good strategy for me.

You might not be able to pick them beforehand, but a decent 4.0 defender always comes to the fore. So, going with your strategy, you will be in a good position to pick whoever this is up early on and re-invest the 1.0 elsewhere.

I tend to favour one big guy, one almost big guy, and 3 cheapies of various quality.

Might look something like this this season:

      Lescott 7.0, Vertongan 6.0, SUN 5.0, WBA 4.5, WHAM 4.0

The first two play most games, with the two decent cheapies rotating and the final cheapy providing cover. There's no one tactic that's certain to work though.

Our defence might suffer from the europa league this year. i'd be amazed if we kept as many clean sheets as we did last year. Having said that, our defence was good (apart from a few blips!), despite having saylor out for half the season, raylor at left back for half a season, and tiote only playing around half the games. So if we add another couple of quality defensive signings, you never know.

You could point to the season before where they kept more clean sheets despite not having Kompany be quite the beast he was, not having any more of settled backline in the rest of the team, United having Vidic and Van Der Sar.

Not that it makes any difference but I fancy Ivan and Vert both to be 6.5

Would like one more big hitter in the middle as well. Will probably sacrifice a striker to a cheaper option (Pog possibly).

Chamakh is going to Fiorentina. He should make Diaby captain. This is going to be Diaby's season. He's going to go the whole season uninjured and people will call him better than Viera ever was. Then next season he'll say that Arsenal lacks ambition. He will say this after being offered a £300000 a week wage at City. 🙂

Alot of talk on here ab out defence rotation, but is anoyone considering starting off with a 4-3-3 formation?

Even without player prices yet there seems to be alot of very good prospects in defence and I think that there will be plenty more mid range defenders that may be worth having over say a 6.0m midfielder and also it is likely to be easier to pick out the better defensive options at the start than the better/in form midfield options.

Im considering the following back line for example:

Ivanovic 7.0 / Vertonghen 6.0 / Hangeland 5.5 / then two cheap rotating defenders for the last two slots likely price 8-8.5m

and then have two 4.5m midfield slots and bench them.

Also a possible plan could be to rotate cheap defender with a cheap mid, ie cheap AVL/SWA midfielder as I have a feeling both defences may not be so solid this season.

    Any thoughts on this?

Interesting idea though defenders are the lowest scoring outfield players each season so I think 3-4-3 is the way to go most weeks. When the new season opens and I can get on the transfer page I'll have a look at how 6-7m defenders scored compared to midfielders of a similar price but can't see myself going 4-3-3.

I know it was only an example but I definitely wouldn't have a Fulham defender as part of a 4-3-3 strategy, unless it was like 4m Kelly last season.

No in a word. Last season it was:
      Richardson fonte hooiveld fox

However we will definately sign at least 1 cb probably 2, possibly a rb, and its yet to be seen whether the new lad buttner replaces fox at lb or plays left mid with lallana switching positions.

Basically hooiveld is the only one nailed on as of right now.
