Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance, and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini league winner Les Caldwell.

“So, I’m never gonna dance again the way I danced with you. Time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend.”

Those expecting a wham from their Free Hit were left with nothing but a feeling of what might’ve been, especially those who invested in Ben Mee (£4.8m) and Wout Weghorst (£6.6m).

Yet, with another Double Gameweek on the horizon, will we learn our lesson and keep hold of these single Gameweek superstars? I doubt it with the likes of Che Adams (£6.9m), Joe Willock (£5.9m) being talked up, although opinion seems split on Armando Broja (£5.5m) if you listen to Az’s careless whisper.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Mark was top of the pops this week with his brave Harry Kane (£12.5m) captaincy standing out against a Weghorst wave, which pushed him to a score of 63 for his Free Hit.

Yavuz Kabuk was the highest scorer amongst those who didn’t use their chip, despite a double hit, but Fabio remains as the King of the Mountain, and he was helped by James Maddison’s (£6.8m) 18-minute cameo and goal.

It’s worth noting that Magnus and Joe have played their second Free Hit of the season and it was a typical bold play from the Grandmaster, with triple Man City, Southampton, and Burnley; it was perhaps unlucky that it didn’t pay off this time around.

TRANSFERS

This is a summary of the transfers for this week:

  • Az – Weghorst, Son (King, Salah)
  • LTFPL Andy – Free Hit
  • Fabio Borges – Broja (King)
  • Joe Lepper – Free Hit
  • Geoff Dance – Free Hit
  • FPL General – Free Hit
  • Les Caldwell – Willock (Cornet)
  • Magnus Carlsen – Free Hit
  • Mark Sutherns – Free Hit
  • FPL Matthew – Saiss, Weghorst (Coufal, King)
  • Neale Rigg – Free Hit
  • Tom Freeman – Broja, Weghorst, Kilman (King, Dennis, Coufal)
  • Tom Stephenson – Free Hit
  • Yavuz Kabuk – Son, Weghorst, Tarkowski (Emerson Royal, King, Salah)
  • Zophar – Free Hit

Whilst the Free Hitters were deciding on their Burnley triple-up and which City midfielder would survive Pep roulette – spoiler: it wasn’t Riyad Mahrez (£8.8m) – the rest were left to make do with the limited transfers they had.

Les Caldwell deserves a mention for moving out a Double Gameweek player in Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m) for Willock and coming out on top in that exchange.

Tom Freeman looks intent on trying to navigate the next few weeks without the aid of a chip and so took a minus eight, as did Yavuz Kabuk, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he Wildcards this week as he sold Mohamed Salah (£13.1m).

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

  • Pope (8), De Gea (3)
  • Cancelo (12), Mee (8), Amartey (6), Livramento (6), Alexander-Arnold (6)
  • Son (10), Mahrez (9), Fernandes (8), Sterling (6), Bowen (6)
  • Weghorst (15), Kane (11), Broja (11)

The impact of the Free Hit gang means that the template was turned upside down with nine new players in the squad; it’s certainly the first time that Weghorst, Mahrez and Mee have made an appearance in the XV.

There was plenty of regret for the Free Hitters who brought in Daniel Amartey (£3.8m), as he also made his debut in the squad – but unfortunately, his eight points were left on the bench for all of them.

WHAT IF?

Amidst all the chaos, it can be easy to forget that our moves do make a difference. The infamous “What If” machine shows us what would have happened if we had not made any transfers or changes to our team since Gameweek 1.

This shows that the General has been the best at directing his battalion over the campaign with an improvement of 388 points from his Gameweek 1 squad, although Tom Stephenson and Fabio are not far behind.

Whilst Tom Freeman sits towards the bottom, it’s worth noting that with his Free Hit, Wildcard and Bench Boost in hand, I expect that to change by the end of season. You can check your own progress here.

CONCLUSION

Wildcard chips are burning in the pockets of many as we enter three weeks of doubles and blanks but many will be keeping their powder dry until the completion of the FA Cup matches to see what the final schedule will bring.

Even when the matches are finalised, there will still be questions to answer. Should we really sell Joao Cancelo (£7.1m)? Is Reece James (£6.2m) fit enough? Can we really be thinking about investing in the Newcastle defence?

Whatever happens, I can sense a lot of joy from seeing those Free Hit-failing Burnley players disappearing from these managers’ teams. If nothing else, this week should tell us that quality is better than quantity when it comes to our squad selections.

Anyway, that’s all from me for and remember: don’t have nightmares.

If Spurs get a game in 30, its probably worth losing Jimenez in 29 to enable the Son & Kane double up for 29 & 30, right? Would be downgrading Jimenez to fodder in 29 to enable the move after BBing in 28. Rest of team for 30 being: Sa, Ait Nouri, Tierney, Saka, Martinelli, Maddison (Kane, Son/Jimenez)

If you had a bench of Aresnal players including Dubra as keeper would you bench boost this week or DGW?

Your bench will be different between the 2 GWs as you're more likely to start Arsenal players that double in 29

This is my current team, before any transfers, just not sure if I should bench boost now or DGW29?

            Digne | TAA | Robertson | Semedo

            Bowen | Son | Salah | Ramsey

            Jiménez | Broja

Was fully going to get Kane in my wildcard, but the game yesterday Son looked a lot more likely to score.

My only issue with SOn is there are a load of other midfielders I could have in and not many strikers I want! haha

Do I get Kane or Son (could try to get both but it might hinder the rest of the team)

Might be a weird question but I want to play my WC this week, is it best to activate it now and play around with players up until the gamewwek or is it best to activate it on the deadline or does it not make a difference?

Activate now you might avoid any price rises.

    2. Tonyawesome69
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

If you're certain to WC then activate it now. There has been instances people have forgotten to do this and went into the GW with a lot of hits

    3. Vjm6891
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

I think the only thing is, if you activate it, you can't unactivate it.

Also depends if anyone you want is going to go up ( or get rid of is going down)

If you're definitely going to do it then no harm in just pressing the button now.

I got in Salah and Kane before they rose!

    4. Silecro
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 9 months ago

its best to activate it right at the start of the gameweek, for example, gameweek 28 starts on friday, its best to activate it a week before, right after the last deadline, to avoid price rises

      1. GoonerGirl
        • 6 Years

Thanks, Guys. I think I'll activate it now then, going by your comments. I've already missed Salah's rise, don't want to miss anymore.

Interesting, I was leaning toward a WC, as barring a large number of hits over the next couple of weeks I will be missing out on doubles for Wolves defence, Chelsea def/mid, Saints attack and addtional GW29 doublers from Arsenal, Spurs & Pool.
A WC would allow me to quite easily navigate 30 without using the FH too, as we will have the additional Saints or Spurs fixture in the mix.

Watford were extremely lucky to keep that CS. They also conceded 4 to Palace. Arsenal are also far more creative from midfield with Odegaard. I think they'll win comfortably or at least score a few.

Cancelo is good but his actual attacking output is not as good as Saka's imo.

I'm gonna take -8 this week. My dilemma is:

    A: Saiss, Sa and Adams
    B: Saiss, Dubravka and Jiminez

I have 3 villa and 1 watford w/ DGWs and also have Ramsdale to cover DGW keeper next week, so I'm leaning towards A at the minute.

A gives you an extra player for GW30 if Saints lose tonight & Adams is also in better form over Jimmy so A for me

    a) Raphinha
    b) Maddison
    c) Podence

      Raphinha comfortably imo.

He's nailed on with pens and has attacking numbers on his side. Same could be said for JWP I suppose but he's a CM who relies on set pieces so I'll always back Raphinha over him.

Most seasons I'd only have one chip max remaining at this stage of the season. This year I have 3 left(2 FHs, BB). Kind of confused what to do with these lol

Yep i feel you , i always blew my wildcard or fh by february time dependent on dgws.

FH 30+33 and BB36 is the plan as of now. Let's see how the situation of GW30 pans out first.

Tempted to wildcard - 50/50 feels silly and good at the same time.

    Laporte - Dier - Son - Weghorst - Denis - Jimmy

    TO

    Coady - Amartey(cheap 5th def and plays gw 30) - Fraser(punt for 2 dgws) - Broja - Vardy - Kane

    A) YaY
    B) NaY

Would a -8 or -12 not be better suited say if you brought in coady Fraser Broja kane they could easily cover the hit.

I'm very lost. I have 2 FH, WC and BB left and a not great team. Just no idea when to play my chips. DGW29 fixtures aren't that attractive for going big on it.

    Any recommendations on chip usage?

Just use them. At this point so many already have, any usage now in these upcoming DGWs is going to be effective.
      28, 29, 30, 33... Take your pick.

      GW's 33, 36 and 37 are expected to be DGW's. So

      WC35, BB36, FH 2 of BGW30 or B/DGW33, DGW37

Currently on this team with a -4 hit. GTG or does it need more? No fh left so looking towards dead-ending into GW30 and then WC in 31. Even thinking a possible BB this week??

Yeah I think I'll wait on the West Ham and Southampton result tonight, if West Ham win then I'll probably be able to make decent GW29 & 30 teams with a couple of minor hits

      Why the -16?

      1. TanN
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 9 months ago

Currently on a -8 with 6 doublers, I want Coutinho and Willock to make it 8 doublers so will likely take another -8 which makes -16. Ik its not ideal but I want to save my last WC as have used both FH (poor chip strategy...).

Anyway, Sa Livra Broja Coutinho and Willock (16 games over the next 2 gws should easily outscore the hit and give me a decent return! Even if they all just get 2 points in each match that's 32 points straight away without any CS or assists/goals so a 'profit' of 16. Plus I will most likely captain either Sa or Coutinho so even more 'profit' from the hit).

But I appreciate it's a big hit and some people arent brave enough to risk it (I'm chasing mini league leader)...
