Martinelli can provide value FPL route into Arsenal’s appealing fixtures

Gameweek 29 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is almost upon us, which gives us an opportunity to have a look at some more differential options.

This time, we’ve selected low-owned picks at Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool, who we think have the potential to make an impact.

As always, to qualify, the player must have an ownership of 5% or less at the time of writing.

GABRIEL MARTINELLI

FPL Gameweek 17 review: Martinelli update, bargain Broja and Antonio's blank
  • FPL ownership: 2.8%
  • Price: £5.3m
  • GW29-33 fixtures: LEI + LIV | avl | cry | BHA | sou

Gabriel Martinelli (£5.3m) is back on the Fantasy radar after netting at Watford on Sunday.

Now, the cut-price midfielder presents an intriguing differential to Bukayo Saka (£6.6m), not least because his minutes-per-expected goal involvement (xGI) figure is better than all of the other Arsenal midfield regulars in 2021/22.

It’s also worth noting that Martinelli has an identical minutes-per-points average as Saka (15.7), which isn’t bad considering he costs £1.3m less, while his seven big chances from Gameweek 13 onwards is only bettered by Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) amongst team-mates.

Positional rival Emile Smith Rowe (£5.8m) will presumably be free from Covid-19 in time for the weekend, but Martinelli has started each of the last 11 Premier League matches he has been available for, producing four goals and two assists, which is encouraging for those backing the Brazilian winger to shine.

As for Arsenal, they have won their last four Premier League matches in a row, and now take on Leicester City (h) and Liverpool (h) in Gameweek 29, before facing Aston Villa (a), Crystal Palace (a) and Brighton and Hove Albion (h). In fact, their schedule right through until the end of the season is favourable, with two more as-yet-unannounced Double Gameweeks to fit in somewhere.

Martinelli offers a budget route into Arsenal’s attack for this double-header, and could be a useful differential in the coming weeks too.

DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN

Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans 6
  • FPL ownership: 3.1%
  • Price: £7.7m
  • GW29-33 fixtures: WOL + NEW | – | whu | MUN | –

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.7m) has struggled for form since returning from injury, but now faces back-to-back home matches against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United in Double Gameweek 29.

Everton’s problematic away form continued at Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, but it is worth noting that their Goodison Park performances under Frank Lampard have generally been good.

The former Chelsea man oversaw a convincing 3-0 victory over Leeds United in his first Premier League home fixture last month, seven days after beginning his reign with a comprehensive Goodison FA Cup success (4-1) against Brentford. Events conspired against them versus Manchester City in Gameweek 27, but there were many positives to take from their display.

As for Calvert-Lewin, he started the 2021/22 campaign in good form, scoring in each of the opening three Gameweeks, but then early momentum was halted after an injury that saw him sidelined up until January. Since his return, the England international has failed to find the back of the net in his six appearances, but has racked up 12 shots in the box, two big chances and 1.99 expected goals (xG), all team-leading totals.

Given their position – they are currently one place and one point above the relegation zone – these two home matches are crucial for Everton, and if they are to get back on track, there is a decent chance Calvert-Lewin will be central to it.

LUIS DIAZ

Returning Sarr among the FPL differentials for Double Gameweek 26
  • FPL ownership: 2.2%
  • Price: £8.0m
  • GW29-33 fixtures: bha + ars | – | WAT | mci | avl

Luis Diaz (£8.0m) has hit the ground running at Liverpool following his January move from Porto.

Since making his first Premier League start in Gameweek 24, the Colombian winger has racked up 17 goal attempts, 11 shots in the box, five efforts on target, two big chances and 37 penalty area touches. He has also created nine chances, whilst amongst all team-mates, only Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) has received more passes in the final third.

At this stage, we should emphasise the rotation risk associated with the player. With Roberto Firmino (£8.7m) nearing a return to action, it’s at least five players competing for three spots in attack, perhaps leaving the likes of Diaz and Diogo Jota (£8.3m), maybe even premium option Sadio Mane (£11.7m), open to a spot of rotation. However, Diaz’s ability on the pitch has been clear for all to see, and if he were to get 120-ish minutes across the two matches, that could be enough for him to haul.

Liverpool return to Premier League action in Double Gameweek 29 when they visit Brighton and Hove Albion and Arsenal, as they aim to keep the pressure on table-toppers Manchester City. That’s followed by a Gameweek 30 blank, although they do have an appealing Anfield encounter against Watford to follow. For those looking further ahead, the Reds will also have another Double Gameweek to come between now and the end of the season.

Adding Diaz to Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m) and Salah – both of whom are locked into most Fantasy sides – is an appealing move this week, and could pay off given Liverpool’s attacking firepower.

  1. Salah or Kane for captain?

I don't know if it's a controversial take or not, but I think Salah is clearly a better captain than Kane this week imo.

The stats say he's better, he plays for the better team, he's a midfielder, he's been better this season.

A few good games against two of the weakest teams in the league, and now people want to captain Kane? I have owned Harry Kane since GW21. I believed that it was a good opportunity to get ahead, the stats looked good, he looked revived under Conte etc. But the truth is, Spurs are far, far from a consistent team.

Liverpool are far more potent in chance creation and even when Salah blanks he still gets a hatful of chances. He hits the post twice against Inter and even on his off day vs West Ham he had chances. Kane is prone in some games to playing super deep playmaking and not having enough link support. Spurs are really dependent on a few cutting chances. They will probably get some against United and Brighton but not nearly the same as Liverpool and if United turn up at home, they can boss a game and limit chances.

You add on the fact that Salah is a midfielder who gets more points for goals and an extra point for clean sheets and I think it's not a tough choice, at least to me. I'm happy that Kane is finding some form now at last but the inconsistency of Spurs is still on display. It was only a few weeks ago they lost 1-0 to Burnley away. Would it really surprise you if Kane did nothing for both games? Would you say the same for Salah?

One week, variance blah blah, but my captain is gonna be Salah this week.

Oh my God. I was 100% set on Kane. After reading this I’ve got major doubts in my head. If Kane bangs and Salah blanks I’m going to have to hunt you down.

I hope I adequately protected myself with that last line xD

In one gameweek, even if it's two games, anything can happen but the money and logic says Salah imo.

I agree. One blank against Whu isn't that big deal imo. I have had armband on Salah all the time and haven't considered to change it. Having both Son and Kane + probably 3rd Spurs option is almost overkill itself.

Salah only blanked because I moved the captaincy to him last minute from Coutinho. He had 7 or 8 shots, I don't think he's ever not scored when taking that many.

Non pen xGI since gw24 where Salah came back from AFCON
      Kane: 5.10 xGI
      Salah 3.70 xGi
Kane doing better for non pen xG and non pen xA.
Both players have 7 big chances in that time
Kane has played Leeds and Everton in that time, but Salah has played Norwich and Brentford.
Salah has played more than 1.5 games less than Kane in that time.
Also factor in that Arsenal are defending better than Utd
Salah the favoured pick but its not exactly clear. Kane is clearly in better form

Salah gets more points for returns though. And they're both on pens so raw xGI can be compared.

Liverpool will be more likely to win pens because they have more possession in the opponents' box as well.

The hot topic comes across as Salah propaganda rather than a post to provoke debate. Its far too simplified as well. The mod also didnt do this post any favours by headlining it as Kane vs Salah when its not really that at all.

            Since GW24 :
            Kane mins / XGI : 106
            Salah mins / XGI : 71

If you take away Salah’s 2 pens he’s still every 101 mins. This is despite him being “off form” and Kane being “in form”. Gets an extra pt for every goal and clean sheet too. Salah is simply the better option

because the chances of getting a penalty is less likely than not getting one so I prefer open play expected stats as my preferred go to. I'll factor in pens outside of that.

"A few good games against two of the weakest teams in the league, and now people want to captain Kane?"

This has been exactly my thinking. I have considered taking a hit to bring him in and captain him, but I keep coming back to the fact that I already have Salah in my team and I still think he is the better option. So why would I take a hit to bet against the likely odds?

Kane put up great performances against Everton and Leeds (teams whose recent defensive records really do speak for themselves) and an arguably complacent Manchester City whose own defensive form is waning slightly. Let's look at the three other games around that time: A Wolves team in relatively poor defensive form, Burnley who have shipped quite a few goals recently, and a Championship side. The number of goals scored by all Spurs assets combined in those three games combined? Zero.

Kane is Kane, he's one of the best finishers in the history of the PL. His movement is phenomenal, and his range and accuracy of passing means he can lay off an assist in the unlikeliest of circumstances. If I had him in my team already I would be very happy, even confident. But I don't think he will do as well as Salah and I don't even think he will necessarily outscore the average put up by his Spurs competitors for FPL slots - the likes of Son, Kulusevski and Doherty. Anyone trying to make up OR ground and who is on the look out for a higher-risk captain could do well out of him, but I don't think he is the best pick for this week.

All those transfers look good in isolation. But I guess the biggest upgrade there is King to Kane so C.

Firstly let’s hope the VVD covid rumors aren’t true!

I’m enjoying Son and just did Bowen to Kulu but if I had the choice I’d lose Watkins for Kane. Just really poor value for Ollie, their fixtures turn sour and Ings the one scoring in any case (if not Coutinho).
Plenty of mid options at different price points. Very few forwards

        I hope so too!

I think I'm pretty set on Kane over Son so narrows it down to A or C.

    A. Richalison instead of Jimenez
    B. DCL instead of Jimenez
    C. Gordon instead of Douglas Luiz
    D. No one

How does this team look for GW29?
    (Took a -8)

    Ramsdale
    TAA Doherty Livramento
    Salah Saka Kulu Raphinha
    Kane Laca Broja

    (Sa Digne Bowen* James*)

Have 9 starters for GW30 so will probably save FT and have 2 FTs after IB.
Then I can decide if I want WC31 or WC34 depending on DGW announcements. Have one FH left also.

    What would you do:

    A. Jota and James to Saka and Robbo (-4)
    B. Jota, James, Ramsey to Saka, Robbo, Martinelli (-8)

    Will likely FH30

Anyone going just with Salah and Trent from Livers?

I'm getting through with transfers and hits as saving WC and free hit for later.
I could go Cancelo to Robbo but it just means jiggery pokery, minus 4 to lose him and probably again to get back in, losing 0.4 value (the value doesn't bother me).

As it stands I can get 7 doublers out this week for free and 10 out next week for minus 4. Getting Robbo would be 8 doublers but I'm not sure it's worth it when I want Cancelo back, and no other route really.

He had his rest v Norwich in the FA Cup and played 2*90 so far. I expect his next rest to be v Forest after the Arsenal games

I know is suicide to FH this gw but if doing what would you think of this team:

    Pickford
    TAA Robbo Targett
    Salah Son Saka Kulu Odegaard
    Kane Laca

    ?

I tried fiting Mané in but, unless I drop Son, it weakens the whole team

    What would you do here?

    Ramsdale
    TAA Saiss Tierney
    Salah Coutinho Raphinha Saka
    Kane Broja Jimenez

    Foster Digne Ramsey James

    a) James, Saiss, Coutinho to Robertson, Doherty and Kulusevski -8
    b) James, Ramsey to Doherty, Kulusevski -4
    c) James, Raphinha to Robertson, Kulusevski -4

I see people saying Everton are decent at home.

Here are their results this season, in reverse order:

    City 0-1
    Leeds 3-0 (Win)
    Villa 0-1
    Brighton 2-3
    Arsenal 2-1 (Win)
    Liverpool 1-4
    Spurs 0-0
    Watford 2-5
    West ham 0-1
    Norwich 2-0 (win)
    Burnley (win)
    Southampton 3-1 (win)

That's five wins in 11, more than half of which came before GW7.

De Gea - Digne - Bowen - Dennis

No. Something is wrong in the Liverpool camp & Arsenal’s defence is better than Utd’s defence. Perfect game for Spurs. Can’t see Maguire stopping Kane & Son
