Joe chats to academic Daniel Whittaker about how Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers think and reach their decisions.

Librarian and information studies academic Daniel (@FPL_Tikka) has just completed his Masters’ dissertation on how FPL managers consume information and use it to decide on their weekly transfers, captain calls and strategies for the weeks ahead.

For this, he has surveyed and interviewed a raft of managers, from ‘hardcore’ content creators, who spend hours each week consuming statistics, to ‘casual’ managers, who spend only a few minutes each week playing the game.

He has kindly agreed to exclusively share the initial findings from his unique research with Joe for the latest in the Meet the Manager series, where we meet interesting managers with a story to tell and who are offering a unique take on FPL.

Among the most eye-catching headlines from his findings is that the FPL community model of gathering data, statistics and news each week is so successful that it could be the future of how all people use information.

He recounts some prominent examples where FPL managers in the community are outpacing mainstream sports journalists and pundits in terms of predicting player availability, tactics and the scheduling of postponed matches across the season.

Who knew last season when Jack Grealish would be available for an extended period first? Who has accurately predicted team line-ups each week? And who knows when extra games will fit into the broadcast schedule, even before the clubs themselves sometimes? These examples are just some of the ways FPL managers are teaching the world how to successfully use information, says Daniel.

Across Joe’s fascinating chat with Daniel, they consider FPL managers’ ‘high levels of information literacy’, the skills they have to refine huge chunks of data each week and the systems and strategies they put in place to help them make key decisions.

Daniel looks back on his own career history to illustrate his points, showing the exact season when he discovered trusted sources of information such as those provided by Fantasy Football Scout and key voices in the FPL Twitter community.

This interview was filmed ahead of Saturday’s deadline, so Daniel also talks through his Gameweek 29 team and transfer plans as he targets a strong finish.

Joe’s chat with Daniel can be viewed below.

2FH and BB left. Not used any transfers yet, FH this or take some hits to get a couple more players in? Plan was to save FH but with Digne and Bowen unlikely I only have 6.

    Ramsdale
    Doherty Digne*
    Son Kulu Saka Bowen*

I think I would take 1-2 hits this GW and use FH in 33/36/37 where there is potentially more upside

      i feel a -4 and u r gtg.
u already have ramsdale son saka doherty kulu which most will have.
get another 2 in if possible that most likely high EO for this gw.
      Jus protect rank. FH33 and FH37. BB36
only 4 games so many have similar players nth much to lose out

A little unsure of what to do this week so curious on opinions. Planning on Son to Mahrez or Sancho and Doherty or Tierney to James next week (if fit), but looking at making another move.

    A) Use FT this week for Elyounoussi to Eriksen and field 9 (I'd keep Eriksen for the run-in)
    B) Field 8 (I have a decent batch I think), roll FT and move Elyounoussi to Odegaard next week (or GW32 as Elyounoussi plays Leeds in GW31)

Eriksen being on set-pieces could be gold vs Leicester

      Toney is currently my captain

That's bold, I like it I think a lot of people forgot how poor Leicester are defensively before Arsenal because of the clean sheets but they were lucky against Leeds, could be a great shout.

I watched the highlights of Brentford v Burnley and was surprised at how much Eriksen seems to be roaming around the edge of the box and he clearly hasn't lost his touch one bit, his cross for the first goal and then ball through to Toney to win the penalty were both sublime

Yuuuup! No space in my midfield, so I'm very interested in strikers who have fixtures, stats and form. Kane's out of reach, so I think I'll go Laca Jim Toney

While trying to pick a captain, I saw so many possibly tough defences and unpredictable attacks in this GW, except Leicester and Brentford. So, yeah. Toney (C) here

I think I prefer to roll the FT. Not keen on keeping Eriksen beyond this GW and wasting a midfielder spot

Replied on previous article. This would also be my concern - that you end up with 2 mids that you might not want to play every week - Ramsey (fixtures) & Eriksen (fitness/fixtures)

Even if Salah is close to fitness for the Arsenal game, isn't it the perfect opportunity for Liverpool to declare him as unfit so as he avoids to play twice for Egypt during the International Break?

Liverpool has a crazy calendar in the beginning of April with

    1st round of UCL 1/4
Game at man City in PL
    2nd round of UCL 1/4
    Game at Villa in PL

between the april 5or6 and April 16

Huge games for Egypt though, if he's in any way able to play for them he'll play. Liverpool won't try to stop him because they know they'd be wrong to and he won't let them stop him if they tried anyway

Leicester strikers are for FH only, and even that is iffy. There's no way to be absolutely certain of which of those two would start

7 decent players to play in GW30 (Sa; Tierney; Saka Ramsey Kulusevski Maddison; Kane).

    1FT. 0.8m ITB. Bring in:
    (a) Toney for Weghorst (short term gain for long-term pain maybe)
    (b) Spurs def for Lamptey (wanted to get rid for a while)
    (c) roll FT (which I'm tempted by)

As someone with a degree in journalism, it's not surprising.

People don't need journalists any more when they can share their information immediately and directly online on Twitter or other platforms.

It still helps to have journalists curate information, just sadly in general they are terrible at it. Too much bias confirmation and not enough verification.

klopp has mane , bobby, jota and diaz all fit, if any doubt with mo then he wont take the risk. that frontline is more than enough to beat gunners

Presser is in 2 hours. Speculation isn't even fun when confirmed info is so close. Let's wait a bit

...and then speculate if Klopp is unclear 🙂

    Team for 30:
    Sa
    Tierney Doherty Ait Nouri
    Saka Martinelli Raphinha Son
    Kane Gelhardt
    (Sanchez, TAA, Cancelo, Salah, Broja)

I think I've decided on a change of plans re: Leicester mids. Originally I was pretty set on Raphinha âž¡ Maddison this week as a long-term move. But with all this uncertainty about his role & possible rotation around European ties, I think it might be time to acknowledge that I've missed his purple patch. Barnes is a decent replacement but when comparing to other midfield options out there, I'm just not as excited by him. I also dont mind keeping Raphinha for SOU/wat after Saturday's performance, and I'm eyeing up a triple move for GW31 but don't really like the sound of -8. So, new plan is to roll FT this week & potentially do Ait Nouri, Son, Martinelli âž¡ James, Havertz, Sancho in 31, and reevaluate Leicester mids in GW33.

I like your plan and agree. A lot are focused on Leicester mids this week and I get it, but Leicester are just too inconsistent. Both Maddison and Barnes are both streaky players so maybe it's a good point for Barnes but it's hard to know how long it will llast, and Maddison has had so many injury/fitness issues of late. Southampton are looking like they're on a bit of a downward trajectory of late so I'd certainly keep Raphinha for that game
