Scoutcast: FPL Blank Gameweek 30 preview and Double Gameweek reaction

Joe, Seb and Andy help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for Blank Gameweek 30 and beyond.

After a flurry of Double Gameweeks, the next set of fixtures offers a welcome relief of sorts as only four matches take place.

But there are further doubles on the horizon for FPL managers to tackle, with the Premier League this week announcing a raft of extra fixtures to be squeezed into Gameweeks 31 and 33.

The Scoutcast trio assess the best options for Gameweek 30’s limited fixture list, including the best players to target based on the latest Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members’ Area statistics.

This chat also includes a mock-up of their ideal Free Hit team for the week, both for those deploying the chip and to assess the best players.

During their chat, it emerges that quality rather than quantity may be the key strategy, with the best captain options and likely scorers set to carry teams with less than a full starting XI.

Planning for forthcoming Double Gameweeks is also key to any decisions ahead of this Friday’s deadline.

While the Scoutcasters are less keen on investing in some of those players from teams with two fixtures, others are certainly exciting them. Burnley and Everton’s extra game in Gameweek 31 is certainly not catching their eye but Leicester’s additional fixture in Gameweek 33 is among those that appeal.

The impact of this weekend’s FA Cup results on some of the rearranged games is also taken into account. The Southampton and Manchester City tie in particular looks pivotal to FPL managers’ plans.

This latest show, which was streamed live on the evening of Tuesday 16 March is slightly different. Andy and his Yeovil internet kindly take on hosting duties for a few weeks while Joe updates his tech.

There’s also time for all the usual features from quickfire questions to team reveals and an update on the progress of the community they are running on behalf of a top manager.

Be sure to subscribe to our Youtube channel to get notified of future live episodes. It is also available as a podcast.

From the FPL perspective, would you rather prefer your player to have:

    a) 10% chance of scoring 0 goals and 90% chance of scoring 1 goal.

    b) 39% chance of scoring 0 goals, 39% of scoring 1 goal, 17% of scoring 2 goals, 4% of scoring 3 goals and less than 1% of scoring more.

Haven't done the maths, but I am assuming the expected points for both is the same, but just there is greater variability with player 2.

If so, I would look at EO of both players. If they both had the same (or very similar) EO, I would go player 2. If one player had significantly greater EO then I would choose them.

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin

Yes the EO is the same, in this situation both players have 0.9 xG in total, but the first player has 1 shot with xG of 0.9 and the second player has 9 shots with xG of 0.1 each.

I was curious if people would prefer one of the options. I've seen someone on Twitter saying it doesn't matter since both players have the same EV, but the distributions have different variances. To be honest I'm surprised people are choosing B, there is as much as 40% of blanking. If I was to captain a player I would select A, but to be honest, in the long run it will even out after some time. It can take time though. You don't know at what side of the variance you will be, and even a whole season is sometimes not enough.

I’d love my defender to have 90% of scoring 1 goal.

I’d like my cheaper strikers/mids ti have 90% of scoring 1

      My captain can be b)

Depends on the bonus points data. How likely is a player with 1 goal to gain bonus points? I suppose 2+ is very likely to get max bonus.

This is purely a question of variance, and hence it is a question of where you are in your season. If you are trailing and need to make up ground, you should choose the higher variance option. If you are ahead and need to make sure you gain a minimum amount of points / to protect, you aim for lower variance.

If there are less total matches left, higher variance is also more likely to deviate a lot from its expected value, whilst over the course of a season, A and B are probably pretty similiar.

One factor is if the team is low scoring or high scoring, or keep a lot of clean sheets, though. As it may be relevant to bonus. If one goal is seldom enough for 3 bonus, I'd edge towards B.

      Looks fine.

My drafts put in cash instead of tierney + spurs wing back (Doherty or regi) and wolves defender (coast/saiss) with same keeper. Not much difference.

Kane/son/barns are the 3 keepers in attack.

After that take your pick. I’m thinking of taking a risk and not getting an arsenal or Villa attacker in favour of Raphinia, Ericsson & Neves. Kane & To et up top.

Could be saka & Coutinhio punish but on a FH like this I’m prepared to take a little bit of a gamble.

With so few forwards options this season I wouldn't be surprised to see mighty Weghorst in our teams again 😛 don't forget Jimenez, Watkins are likely to blank in DGW33 so it will be tempting to sell them.

But again, no matter how cliche it sounds "team dependant" are the keywords here, I have Jimenez and he will be gone for Weghorst after GW30, it's a convenient transfer.

My forward line after BB is Kane, Wood, Broja. I have zero fodders. I have basically two choices:
            A) Wood to Wout
            B) Wood to fodder like Gelhardt and upgrade Raphinha to Ziyech / Diaz and defender to R James / Cancelo / Robbo.

I find this situation to be now very close to a 50/50 call.

    Tierney, Doherty
Son, Raph, Saka, Bowen (if fit)
    Wadkins

Sanches, Steel, TAA, Cancelo, Rudier, Salah, Dennis, Borja

The plan was Salah and Dennis to Ramsey and Kane (c), then Son to Salah in GW31 for free, but is it worth taking a hit to do this instead ?

GW30 Salah and Dennis to Coutinho and Kane (c)
GW31 Son and Bowen (or Coutinho) to Salah and Gordon (-4)

I currently have no GW31 DGWers.

Those without Kane, what are you thinking? 2 FHs, BB left, no WC
    A) FH GW30
    B) Go without Kane
    C) Salah and Broja to Barnes and Kane (-4) AND 31 - Robbo and Son to Chalobah(?!) and Salah (-4)
    D) Salah and Broja to Barnes and Kane (-4) AND go without Salah until 33/34

8 without any transfers. Might consider Sanchez to Schmeichel or rolling:

      I'm thinking:

For those of us without free hits, surprise results in the FA cup could be a disaster. If Saints win and Chelsea go through it would mean Arsenal and Chelsea would only have a single game against eachother (and most of us have probably on average 4 of these) and city would have double game week where most people dont even have city assets. Squeaky bum time

I agree. Barnes, Maddison and Tielemans will score, but I can see all of them rotated. When they get dgw, we can perhaps expect one start. I think I am going to avoid and let others fall into dgw fever trap.

Really stuck on what to do here with this super-thin BGW team:

    A) Dalot, Gordon > Amartey, Ramsey (-4), field 8
    B) Dalot > Ajer (FT), field 7, keeping Gordon given his double in 31
    C) Something else?

    Ramsdale,
    Tierney,
    Raph, Son, Saka
    Kane

(Salah, Gordon, TAA, Rudi, Broja, Cancelo, Dalot, Idah, Foster; £0.1M itb)

Thanks for reply (soz only just seen this), Yep would love a Wolves def for Dalot, but can only afford ATN who's a game-time risk. Might have to break into one of the pricer assets as you say!

          no worries

yeah, not sure i would break it up for just getting one more player in tbf

it costs to get players back in, and new issues will surely present themselves and FT's will be precious

RAN is risky, Davies from spurs is same price i think?

When do we think the remaining unscheduled fixtures will be rearranged by?

Is it reasonable to think we’ll get further announcements during the international break and before gw31 deadline?

I can’t work out a wildcard team with all these unscheduled games, dgws and potential postponements - my head hurts!!

Here are some clean sheet and any time goalscorer odds for you. I like the idea that the odds tell you something about the real probabilities but at times, these odds show either lazy pricing or the hope that punters will be lazy and not check out who is likely to play.

The clean sheet odds suggest a defence comprised of Tottenham, Wolves and Leicester defenders. Tottenham have the shortest clean sheet odds and with Bowen and possibly Antonio missing, I like that option. If you take Kulu as your third Tottenham player, then he’s unlikely to do something without Kane or Son being involved anyway.

Leicester and Wolves are priced at a one third chance of a clean sheet (so in reality, less than a one third chance – not that high) but that is still more likely than Arsenal. Nevertheless, I will stick with Ramsdale in goal for the bonus points.

Toney is priced as the second most likely striker to score after Kane. However, he comes out below Lacazette and Jiminez on RMT, probably due to lower assist potential. If you can get the right Leicester striker then both are more likely to score than Jiminez and Lacazette. I’ll probably dodge trying to guess that though.

Raphina is the second most likely midfielder to score according to the odds, so a hedge against a double Wolves defense could be worth it. He was unlucky at the weekend. Coutinho is third most likely and more likely than Villa’s strikers. Nobody is talking about Tielemans but he is apparently more likely to score than Barnes.

What do you think of these odds? Which odds give you insight and which are a red herring? Is RMT always a better guide?

    Clean Sheet odds

    Wolves 2/1
    Villa 13/4
    Arsenal 5/2
    Leicester 2/1
    Brentford 10/3
    Tottenham 17/10
    West Ham 5/1
    Leeds 3/1

    Any time goalscorer

    Kane 21/20
    Son 6/5
    Kulu 23/10
    Doherty 6/1
    Sanchez 6/1
    Regulion 13/2

    Daka 6/4
    Nacho 13/8
    Tielemans 21/10
    Barnes 10/3
    Justin 9/1
    Pereira 11/1
    Thomas 12/1

    Coutinho 2/1
    Watkins 5/2
    Ings 14/5
    Ramsey 16/5
    McGinn 6/1
    Cash 17/2

    Laca 2/1
    ESR 2/1
    Saka 23/10
    Martinelli 23/10
    Pepe 12/5
    Odegaard 3/1
    Gabriel 11/2
    Tierney 14/1

    Jiminez 15/8
    Hwang 15/8
    Neto 12/5
    Podence 7/2
    Coady 11/2
    Saiss 6/1
    Kilman 11/1

    Raphina 15/8
    James 7/2
    Harrison 7/2

If I need to calculate for a single gw, I usually use anytime goalscorer odds and then use underlying stats and cumulative amount of assists to calculate assist potential. And I do hunt baps also 🙂

For this gw only for those on FH optimal Spurs assets are Kane, Son and Doherty, since Martinelli has similar odds to score as Kulu. However I am still happy to have chosen Kulu + White over Martinelli + Doherty long term. Martinelli's minutes are an issue and I prefer Kulu over him. He is also more injury prone. White is more likely than Doherty to keep clean sheets long term and is cheap enough to be benched, which allows to have more explosive rotation risks. Doherty still has competition and is riskier pick should he make errors big enough. Also early YC for him might mean him being subbed off at HT.

I really enjoyed this post, and appreciate the work picking aoarr the odds. But interested in what you mean by this:

"Leicester and Wolves are priced at a one third chance of a clean sheet (so in reality, less than a one third chance – not that high)" why do you think they are less than a third "in reality"?

Also, for those of us who are cr*p at fractions, it would be nice to have the teams listed in order of likelihood of cleansheet, rather than alphabetically

      1. Bunk Moreland
        • 8 Years

Yeah, OP has got that part wrong. Since the bookies want a profit, they give odds as if the event is slightly less likely to happen than it actually is. If they price a Leicester CS as if it has a 33% chance to happen, they have probably calculated it as having a 35-38% chance of happening.
