We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Wednesday’s Gameweek 29 fixtures in our Scout Notes summary.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS AND BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

There were no fresh injury concerns immediately evident from Wednesday’s brace of Premier League games, with the only headline of note being Mohamed Salah‘s (£13.3m) recovery from a foot injury sustained last weekend.

The Egyptian was restricted to a 35-minute run-out off the bench at the Emirates and could only add a ‘one-pointer’ onto his tally from the win over Brighton, however.

Salah being Salah, he still had more shots than any other player in north London despite the limited game-time.

“Yesterday we had only this one session to train and for Mo, it was a session to test if everything is fine – it was fine. So, no, he doesn’t start but we have him in the back hand and he can come on, really good.” – Jurgen Klopp ahead of kick-off on Wednesday

FPL TALKING POINTS

TITLE RACE ON – GOOD NEWS FOR DOUBLE GAMEWEEKS?
 1

Liverpool’s win over Arsenal took them to within a point of leaders Manchester City, with nine matches to play for both sides – one of which is a meeting between the two clubs in Gameweek 32.

A neck-and-neck title race could be welcome news for Fantasy managers in the run-in, particularly when Liverpool and City get their last Double Gameweeks of the campaign. These are currently scheduled for Gameweek 33 but would be moved to Gameweek 36/37 if progress is made in the FA Cup this weekend.

While the majority of teams in the division are competing for something in the league at this point of the season, be it survival, the title or a European place, that almost certainly won’t be the case by the time we get to the final few Gameweeks.

It’s not the difficult-to-quantify ‘on the beach’ mentality that we’re worried about here so much as rotation because of focus switching towards cups at home and abroad by springtime.

For example, Manchester City effectively – if not mathematically – had the league title in the bag by April last season and their attention was very much centred on their Champions League tilt after that. Ruben Dias (£6.2m), an immovable presence at the heart of the City defence up until that point, started just four of City’s final seven league matches. Ilkay Gundogan (£7.1m), borderline ‘essential’ during the winter months, made the starting XI in just three of his side’s last nine Premier League games.

A Premier League title race going down to the wire ought to ease concerns over such widespread rotation this time around.

KULU SHAKING UP THE MIDFIELD TEMPLATE

Above: FPL midfielders sorted by points from Gameweek 26 onwards

Dejan Kulusevski‘s (£6.2m) assist in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion, belatedly awarded by FPL Towers after a technical glitch, took his total to 42 points since his first Premier League start in Gameweek 26. The Swede has played two or three games more than some of the players in the above table but why let that get in the way of a good narrative: the Spurs loanee is top among Fantasy midfielders for points in that time.

It has to be said that no player has overachieved more than Kulusevski over the last four Gameweeks in terms of ‘expected goal involvement (xGI)’, so his rate of returns will very likely slow over a more sustained period. Luck is certainly falling his way at present, too, with a Cristian Romero (£4.8m) deflection helping the Swede’s shot past a stranded Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) on Wednesday.

Still, with a tired-looking Son Heung-min (£10.9m) struggling to make much of an impact in the last two matches (not just in FPL terms but in ‘real-life’ performances), there’s no surprise to see the Sweden international besting his more expensive teammate for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 30.

Antonio Conte hailed the controlled nature of Spurs’ win over Brighton, and at the centre of it all was again Harry Kane (£12.4m). This is the best he has looked all season and he recovered from an early horror miss against Albion to score his seventh goal in six league matches and create two excellent but spurned chances for Sergio Reguilon (£5.2m). His total of six shots was also one more than the rest of Spurs’ midfielders and forwards attempted combined.

TIRED BODIES FOR GAMEWEEK 30?
 1

Arsenal produced a creditable performance in defeat to Liverpool, arguably having the best of the game until a rare old Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m) error handed the initiative to the Reds early in the second half.

The Gunners and Spurs were the only two teams with two fixtures in Gameweek 29 who also play in Gameweek 30, and neither north London side has made a starting XI change this week.

Arsenal, in fact, have less than 63 hours between full-time against Liverpool and kick-off at Villa Park on Saturday lunchtime. A rested Aston Villa might have a bit of advantage this weekend, then, although Mikel Arteta at least appeared to have switched his focus towards energy preservation in the closing stages against Jurgen Klopp’s side, withdrawing Martin Odegaard (£5.5m), Bukayo Saka (£6.6m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m).

Gabriel Martinelli (£5.3m) was the only frontline starter to complete 90 minutes but he turned in an excellent display and looks to be back at the levels we saw in December.

“Yes, 100 per cent [we will be ready on Saturday], don’t worry the players will be there on Saturday with the energy. They will sleep, eat well, but thank you so much to the Premier League for putting the fixtures like this, it’s very, very helpful.

Because it’s not fair what they’ve done. It’s always Sky or BT, this or that, but the only one that is affected is Arsenal and the only thing that I care about and what we care about, is Arsenal and for Arsenal, it’s not fair.” – Mikel Arteta

Spurs at least have an extra day, taking their recovery period up past the 90-hour mark. They’ll also be facing a side with even less of a turnaround time, as West Ham United are in Europa League action on Thursday night. Son and Matt Doherty (£4.8m) were hooked 10 minutes before full-time at the Amex, perhaps with one eye on Gameweek 30, and Conte had earlier seemed to suggest that Son was undroppable at present.

RED-HOT ROBERTSON

Above: FPL players sorted by returns (goals + assists + [for defenders] clean sheets) from Gameweek 13 onwards

Music’s loss is FPL’s gain at present as Andrew Robertson’s (£7.2m) superlative run of form continued at the Emirates.

He has at least five more Fantasy returns than any other player over his last 14 starts, with 116 points coming his way in the meantime (that’s an average of 8.3 per match).

His pass for Roberto Firmino‘s (£8.7m) goal in north London took him to 11 assists for the season, level with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.5m).

“That’s a clear agreement of us, a clear agreement. We had to readjust it, to be honest, in early January. We have to agree on defence first because otherwise you are like any team, you win or you lose, you win or you lose. Today we win 2-0 but we had games we won 1-0 and we wouldn’t have won these games if we are not defensively spot on.” – Jurgen Klopp on the importance of clean sheets

    On a FH GW30

    A. Jimenez
    Or
    B. Toney

    Thanks guys

Tough call. Neither Leeds or Leicester are very good defensively. Both Jiminez & Toney are on pens. I'd probably lean towards Toney just because he's in better form and I think Eriksen has given Brentford something different. I expect other people will disagree.

I'm not using a FH this week, and though I have a FT and 2.5m ITB I think I'm just going with Kane as my only forward (have Adams & Broja on the bench) and rolling the transfer for GW31.

Kicking myself for leaving VVD on the bench this GW due to the covid rumours. Probably my poorest decision this season and it was a last minute one too.

On another note still have FH/BB/TC and about 15 points behind in ML. Rival has none. I should be able to make it up yeah?

Question, if you were unsure of rumours why not start him and if he doesn't have covid he plays and does what he does. If he has covid he doesn't play and auto-sub kicks in? It's what I did with James and Bowen. Now I have Ramsey's 10 points from the bench.

Unfortunately I started Broja over Gelhardt (5 point swing)

If he was positive he probably wouldve missed only one game and i expected ARS to score at home. In that case i thought his replacement had a higher ceiling but still a silly decision. You learn from your mistakes

WC 26 worked well for me. Let’s Talk FPL great at putting forward players/strategies to consider with pros and cons but at end of the day we are all responsible for our own teams.

That is not correct. There are always some managers who listen everyone, make their own decisions and then they blame the one who they listened when they failed. Many of them are known to be anti vaccine, anti meat and pro Russia.

WC 26 only really worked by ignoring 27 if you wanted to also cover 28 - 30 … if only you used a FH in 27 then you would have been set for 28, 29 & 30.

depends upon your team and if you are going to hold them for a while … Wolves don’t have any more doubles and Arsenal have two … Laca may be a good hold with that comfortable fixture list for the run in and something to play for

Black Box is so so good, Mark owning mistakes is one of the reasons I enjoy listening to him so much. Other popular Youtubers never show that maturity and general humility.

    With this in mind-
Non FH players this week- FH is awful this week, no good players (kind of agree but has allowed Havertz, James, Roberston in last few weeks)
Also non FH players- I dont need FH as I have 8/9 players. So you have 8/9 players who are no good?

I don't think it's that confusing really. There are decent options but the pool is limited and my guess is that most serious players already have many/most of them. So is a FH really worth it to fill the 2/3/4 remaining slots especially when you only have 8 teams to choose from? Surely better to use a FH and/or take a hit if you must and save the FH for when the pool of players to choose from is larger and ideally it's a DGW for maximum effect.

True but pre this week still holding 2 FH, WC and BB.
The main thing about knowing FH this week means you could have had James, Robertson, Havertz over the last few weeks knowing your FT's havent had to be focussed on these 'poor' teams

Is Barnes worth downgrading Salah for this week for free? Tempted to do so as he'll be useful longer term but not sure if I'd be better off saving. Only have 8 at present but most of the big guns (kane, kulu, saka, Raph, Doherty, Tierney, saiss, ramsdale)

If I do downgrade Salah I'm contemplating risking going without until 34 but that could be suicidal to my rank... maybe short term gains to be made with utds good fixtures and double could make bruno / sancho a decent option?

Yeah I also think this could be the case. Of course, it may not be but maybe worth the risk if you can replace with an alternative with good potential. Liverpool is also the early kick off so we could potentially get info on whether he starts before the deadline too

Basically Brighton, ManU, Burnley, Leicester and Newc have confirmed doubles so far... so if am committing to transfers this week while trying to think of GW33 in mind, Newcastle and Leicester are safest.

    Saiss Kilman Doherty
    Saka Coutinho Son Raphinha
    Lacazette Jimenez

    Dubravka Salah TAA Rudiger Broja

    1FT, 0.0itb

Thinking I’m going to run with this, maybe Maddison over Barnes, depends on the midweek lineup… reluctantly taking hits but bigger picture I’d like Kane for the remaining fixtures, and Kulusevski can try and cover Son for much cheaper…

    GW30 Salah Jimenez >> Barnes Kane (-4)
    GW31 Coutinho Son >> Kulusevski Salah (-4)

Reckon this is a save? Don’t really want to lose the 3 x LIV and there aren’t many options to replace Broja for 5.9m:

    Ramsdale
    Tierney, Coady, Ait-Nouri
    Coutinho, Raphina, Martinelli, Kulu
    Kane, Jimenez

    Foster, Trent, Robbo, Salah, Broja
    Bank 0.4m, 1FT, BB/FH left

It’s tough. For a -8 I’d want to get Kane and 2 mids.
But the mids I’d want are Son, Martinelli and you’re maxed out on Arsenal/Spurs.

Super punty might be Lanzini in the midfield. Usually on penalties. Has been playing a lot lately.

      Maybe do

      Salah+Mane+Broja > Kane+Barnes+Lanzini/Eriksen/Podence.

Don’t think a defender is worth bringing in at all. Unless Doherty.Arsenal but again you’re maxed out.

Is it worth 1 FT to do Son > Kulu and use fund to upgrade Broja > Jimenez (-4)?

There is a chance for Son to deliver and selling him for -4 look unnecessary. But Jimenez will get a game with Leeds at home while Broja is blank and Kulu could outscore Son again.

My decision to go Son and Doherty instead of Kane and Kulu has backfired massively.

    What would you do?

    A. Son & Wood to Barnes & Kane (-4), Son to Salah in 31. Probably easier to get Ronaldo (via Kane) in 33

    B. ignore Kane; do Salah to Barnes, then Ramsey to Salah in 31 (exact cash). If priced out, Jimmy to Adams (-4) to fund it.

    C. Save FT

I guess there is some mistake in A. How will you do Son to Salah in 31 after getting rid of him this week?

If you are planning to get rid of Kane in 33, I'm not sure its worth bringing him. Who is the 3rd forward?

I have 1.9 itb. Should be enough to do Son to Salah for free in 31

Yep might be too kneejerky and wasteful getting Kane for a hit and getting rid in 33. Plus I'm losing a DGWer (Wood) in the process! But Kane been a destroyer for me.. making all my good moves a waste for not owning him

Salah and Weghorst to Barnes and Kane for -4pts this week
Coutinho and Son to some midfielder and Salah for -4pts next week

Does this work? Reason for using Coutinho as enabler is he will face wol, TOT, LIV in next 3 games.

          • 13 Years

Why Weghorst and not Wood? Weggy has doubles in 31 and 30 while Wood only double in 33. Is Weggy that bad? 😀

It surely works. In fact I don't need to lose Cout or any other player, can do Son to Salah straight swap in 31.

          1. Holmes
            • 12 Years

Not much in it I guess, both are kind of underwhelming picks. Newcastle are atleast looking better from attacking perspective. You can drop Wood though, Weghorst' fixtures are slightly better.

Go for A then, low risk move. Coutinho to Havertz for additional -4pts 😉

Good morning. I am considering to bring Kane to replace Son for GW 31:

    (A) Son + Saka + Jimenez -> Kane + Havaz + Martinelli (-8)
    (B) Son + Digne + Jimenez -> Kane + 7.6 midfielder + Schar (-8)
    (C) Son + Jimenez -> Maddison/Barnes/Tielemans + Kane (-4)
    (D) I have Kulu and Son, don't need Kane. However I would like to find a better forward than Jimenez if possible.

    Thanks!

This blank week has me thinking about the value of rolling a transfer vs doing a single FT.

I haven’t really thought this through but i think optimally it’s either roll or take a hit. Just using a FT is not giving enough upside.

If you roll - having 2 is a big benefit the following week.
If you spend you single FT then you get one FT next week but only one shot of a return on a new player.
If you take hits you get one FT next week.
So you may as well take 1 or 2 hits to give multiple chances of extra returns this week.

Not sure if that makes sense but there’s something in there interesting to me.

I’m like 99% rolling this week with 8 starters.

Cant afford, even on WC. Will have to be over Trent or Cancelo :/

Would do Mount Mahrez> Foden Diaz. Or just Mahrez> Foden

Downgrading Kane and going for premium defense is an option but not sure which forward I would pick.

Something like Lacazette, Kulu, Robertson over Kane, White, Martinelli is possible.

which I guess is not a bad considering I wont be putting armband on Kane

I prefer the Kaneless option tbh

yeah, 3 decent options in exchange of one. avoids arsenal double defense and not much difference between Lacazette and Martinelli
