We’ve yet to hear official news from Tottenham Hotspur about the severity of Matt Doherty’s (£4.9m) knee injury but widespread media reports suggest he will be out for the remainder of the season.

The Irish wing-back had been in good form before limping out of Saturday’s win over Aston Villa and was well owned in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), sitting in over 75% of the top 10,000 squads as of Gameweek 32 (figures below via LiveFPL):

Who are the leading candidates to replace him in our FPL squads, then?

Naturally, there are a plethora of premium options who are very obvious candidates to step in, should a spare million or three be available.

But here we look at some of the frontrunners in the budget and mid-price bracket, with defenders up to £5.5m under consideration.

EMERSON ROYAL/SERGIO REGUILON

Low-owned FPL pick Emerson Royal can thrive as a wing-back under Conte 1

Gameweek 33 ‘doublers’ are key transfer targets this week but as a longer-term investment, Emerson Royal (£4.5m) and Sergio Reguilon (£5.1m) are worthy of serious consideration.

Since Antonio Conte first took charge of the Lilywhites in Gameweek 11, Spurs players are dominating the expected goal involvement (xGI) tables among £5.5m-and-under defenders:

Above: Defenders priced at £5.5m and under sorted by xGI from Gameweek 11 onwards (min. five apps)

It’s Reguilon who immediately leaps out. He has the best rate of goal attempts, shots in the box, efforts on target, penalty area touches and xGI among Doherty replacements under £5.6m, while only two options have created chances at a better frequency.

When he’s on the pitch, Reguilon is the stand-out pick. But is he assured of game-time from now until Gameweek 38? It may only take a bad display or two from the Spaniard for the fit-again Ryan Sessegnon (£4.3m) to come back into the thinking, as it was he who was keeping Reguilon out of the side before injury struck.

Emerson, by contrast, would seem to stand a better chance of retaining his spot for the run-in, devoid of natural competition down the right flank. Dejan Kulusevski (£6.4m) had previously been mentioned as an option in that position by Antonio Conte but would the Italian really redeploy a now first-choice member of his front three?

Emerson can’t really match Reguilon for much statistically but he’s ahead of most other potential Doherty replacements for the key metrics.

Favourable fixtures surround Spurs’ Double Gameweek 36 and there’s a top-four spot to play for, so rotation should be kept at a minimum.

And let’s not forget the points potential at the other end of the pitch: since Conte took charge, only the top two have kept more clean sheets. Spurs are also the third-best side for fewest ‘big chances’ conceded in that time.

Above: Premier League teams sorted by clean sheets from Gameweek 11 onwards

    First FH Draft:

    Schmeichel
    Targett, Schär, Cancelo, Walker
    Son, KdB, Fernandes, Maddison
    Kane, Wood
    KDH, fodder, fodder

I like my midfield and attack. Any suggestions replacing Walker/Targett?

very similar to mine but i have 5 in midfield with Martinelli and a back three of Schar, Cancelo and probably a Utd defender but could be Arsenal or even Burnley player for more of a punt. I'd favour a city double up over a newcastle one. I've got Burn on the bench over Targett though.

    A) Rudiger + Raphina + Dennis ---> Cancelo + Gordon + Wood (-4)

    B) Rudiger + Raphina ----> Cancelo + Mbeumo (Free)

    C) Rudiger + Raphina + Dennis ---> Cancelo + Dewsbury-Hall + Toney (-4)

Why Maddison over Barnes? Talk of a rest for Maddison.

Finding captaincy choice extremely difficult this week as there are just so many options. If it was a single gameweek I'd go for Son or Kane but the lure of the double is clouding my judgement. There just seems to be a caveat with every doubler though. Minutes risk Maddison. Poor United attack. Arsenal declining. Do I really want to captain a Newcastle player? Think there could be huge captaincy swings similar to the Coutinho/James/Raph DGW28 so it's important to nail it. Just not sure which route to take.

All good points, don't think I've got any answers. Won't be captaining ASM as some 'FPL experts' on twitter are clamouring for though

just cap a Spurs then as they are the form team for goals, i'm going to take a punt on Wood myself, he has pens and Newcastle have been decent at home lately, and they're up against 2 mid table sides with nothing really to play for, and one of them will probably rotate heavily, so hopefully they're two good open attacking games with plenty of goals 🙂

If I had a MUN attacker it would be them. I'd captain Bruno or Ronaldo for NOR alone. As I don't, though, I agree it's tricky. Saka, Harvey B, ASM; has it come to this? Kane feels safer.

It's definitely a tougher week than normal but it's nice to have options and that choices should be fairly spread out this week. I'm pretty set on KDB, City have done pretty well against them in recent years (probably mainly because Brighton have a go at them so it ends up being fairly open). Can't deny I also simply like having a captain that plays late on in the week too.

    FH team: 8DGWers

    Dubravka-Pope
    TAA-James-Rüdiger-Jonny-Doherty
    Barnes-Kulusewski-Saka-KDB-Raphina
    Wood-Kane-Broja

    2 FTs, £2.9 Million.

Plan was to Bench Boost this week, by selling Jonny and Raphina who both blank.
Now Doherty is out, and Chelsea have a cup game before Arsenal.

Do I take a -4, bring in Cancelo, Schaer, Maddison (JWP/Cornet) and Bench Boost?
Or bring in two doublers, no BB?
Or Free Hit in 33, BB in 36 or 37?
    Advice appreciated!

United need a whole new squad to play like ten Haag wants.
They were satsing, Ole was so bad, only need a good manager. Well, Rangnick tried and if i may say so done worse. Ole had bad games but he also had some good ones, like Psg, City, etc. Rangnick just made them average, all the time. Which they are.

    Timo Werner for WC 34.

    Hear me out...

Chelsea looked really good with him in the side vs Real. He's started all of the last 4 league games and put up the highest xG in a single match of the season vs Southampton.

He's 8.6m. If you go with him as your lone forward over Kane it opens a lot of doors including Son-Salah in midfield along with all of the big 4 defenders.

Is it insane? A little. But there's a lot of games left and Lukaku has truly dropped off the radar while Chelsea still have two DGWs left where he can do some damage. Definitely not for the faint of heart but there are big points to be had with Chelsea attack imo and this is one route that no one else will likely go down.

What if your midfield is Salah, Son, Kulu, Havertz, Foden?

Actually, it's only a little bit more... But still. Just trying on different sizes.

On reflection... Werner is still just a bit too high. If he was like 7.5m I would strongly consider going there.

7.5 would be great. Overall the forwards situation is so bad now that I would like to drop Kane but can't really find a reasonable replacement to get on WC34 along Mateta and Greenwood.

One caveat to this, playing him as a lone striker is risky, he's not 100% nailed so there might be a week or two when you won't get autosub because of FPL formation rules, just something to consider. Otherwise I kind of like it 🙂

Over Kane, yes it's insane. Not nailed and just not reliable. He's done well against Southampton in the past few seasons due to their high defensive line and gung-ho approach at times, and they're also in a shocking run of form. Will he get that space against Arsenal, Everton at Goodison, Wolves, Leeds? I don't think so.

Foden ahead of Barnes for me. Good history against Brighton as well if you believe in that thing.

If you had these 9 players in your XI, would you care who the other 2 were?

    TAA, James, Cancelo, Laporte
    Salah, KDB, Son, Mount, Kulusevski

Not really, there's always couple weak links in our team, can't have them all, I would be perfectly happy with that team and let's say Mateta and Dennis or something along the lines. GW34 WC I presume?

My starting lineup in GW 33:
    Foster
    James Cancelo Scharr
    Maddison Barnes Kulu Son
    Lacazette Broja Kane
    Bench:
    Rudiger (only plying bench player)

I’m tied in my mini league, and my opponent will almost certainly use a FH. I’m saving mine. Am I wrong? I see no need. Pins and needles.

Mahrez in on a FH is tempting me. Feels like he's due a haul and Brighton at home is the kind of fixture that he revels in.
