Michael Laudrup’s first move as manager of Swansea saw Spanish central defender Jose Manuel Flores sign from Serie A outfit Genoa in a deal thought to be in the region of £2m. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year deal and re-unites with the new Swans boss, having previously worked under the Dane at Mallorca…

The transfer goes some way to addressing the gap left in Swansea’s central defence after Steven Caulker returned to parent club Tottenham following a successful loan spell at the Liberty Stadium last season, with Flores, or “Chico” as he is known, set to partner Ashley Williams in the heart of the back-four. Similar to fellow new boy Jonathan De Guzman, the 6 foot 2 inch stopper revealed the chance to work with Laudrup again was a key factor in his move to the Welsh club, going on to say:

“He knows me as a person and a player, so I was honoured when the call came. I believe the manager will be good for Swansea and they have done extremely well to get him. Swansea’s way of playing is the same style as he wants to play the game. He is the right person to take this club forward. Being brought up in Spain, I have the same culture of possession and passing football. I like to play from the back, come forward with the ball, and add to the possession game.”

The Statistics

The centre-half began his career as an 18-year old with hometown club Cadiz. After a couple of seasons in the reserves, Flores was promoted to the first-team but made just three appearances before being sent out on loan to the Spanish lower leagues during the 2007-08 campaign. Spells at Racing Club Portuense and Barcelona B harvested five goals in 32 games for the clubs before La Liga side Almeria came calling.

Over the course of a couple of campaigns, Flores played 47 times and scored a single goal – his displays in helping the club to a solid 13th place finish in 2009-10 caught the eye of Genoa and the centre-half moved to Italy in the summer of 2010 on a five-year deal. He failed to impress during his one season in Serie A, however, and, with just 15 appearances under his belt in his debut campaign, was loaned to Mallorca last term with the Spanish side given an option to make the deal permanent. Back in his native country, Flores came to the fore and was an integral part of the first-team, making 33 appearances, with his reading of the game and ability to intercept his opponents’ play one of the most impressive across Europe’s top five leagues last season.

The Prospects

While many fear a drop in Swansea’s potential following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, Laudrup is keen for his new charges to maintain their slick passing game as the Welsh club look to avoid “second season syndrome” after last term’s 11th place finish. His ability on the ball should see Flores fit seamlessly into the club’s system and with 14 clean sheets accrued in 2011/12, Fantasy managers may be eyeing up the Swans backline once again.

The major issue this time round is pricing, however. Michel Vorm came in at 4.0 in the previous campaign but his heroics between the posts have already seen his starting price soar this time round, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuing him at 5.5. “Chico” has been handed a 5.0 starting price by the FPL in today’s published price list, putting him on a par with established starters Angel Rangel, Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams. Unless he can display some attacking threat or start soaking up some EA PPI points from king of the blocks, Williams, Flores will surely take a back seat, then.

Intriguingly, Flores has been slapped with a relatively low price in the Sky Sports game in comparison to his defensive team-mates. His 5.0 valuation is considerably less than Williams’ 6.9, with Rangel the next cheapest option at 5.7. In this game, then, the new boy looks an enticing prospect for those Fantasy managers looking for a route into Laudrup’s defence.

A kind opening schedule only furthers his appeal. Home clashes with (WHM, SUN, EVE) in the first five Gameweeks are allied with trips to QPR and Villa and offer Laudrup a strong platform to kick off his career at the Liberty Stadium in style. Whether Fantasy managers will be celebrating every Swansea clean sheet in a similar manner to last season is more than a little unlikely, though.

He's 1m cheaper than Hart, playing for a side that kept the most cleansheets last season. What's not to get, good luck finding another Vorm or Krul this season.

I don't expect to get another Vorm or Krul, but I think there's at least one cheap keeper/cheap combo that will bring in enough pts to merit the outlay.

I think the extra money would be better spent on the overall team.

I see what you're saying, but there's no Vorm/Ruddy 8m combo this year. 9 is the minimum and you may as well spend a touch extra for Utd defensive cover.

            (General) options look like:

            A) DDG + £4m = £10m outlay
            B) 2 x £5.0m / £4.5 + £5.5
            C) 2 x £4.5 and £1m in the bank

If I was spending that much, I'd prefer the flexibility of two rotating cheaper keepers but of the 3, I'm going with the bargain bucket option C - the £1m comes in handy elsewhere for me. For pts per £, I think you get more from the other parts of your team. Plus rotating is more fun.

It's just woke me up Tang. For all the talk of cheap prices, it's still tough to get the right balance. Lescott may have to go to.

Problem with the Jaas / Bego combo is Pulis bringing out Sorenson.

I'm with you but tbh there's no right formula. That's why I don't get RMT's if you think it's the right way to go then go for it. Last year pre kick off 3-4-3 was in the minority but that quickly changed. We can only go by what we think is right and if it's not then change accordingly.

I am an Arsenal fan & I think, at 7.5m, Gervinho could be a great prospect this year.

    Last year:

*he was classed as a striker
    *first season in the EPL
*got a silly ban at the start of the season
    *went to the ACN
*hardly got a game when he came back
*showed glimpses of his quality attacking threat potential

This year he will be more settled, hopefully have more confidence in front of goal & incidently he scored in our friendly last week.

If he is a regular starter, I will be watching him very closely.

Agreed, if he can pin a start down. That's a big if now Podolski is about and with the Ox pushing too. Walcott a given on one flank I'd expect. Much depends on the system I suppose and of course, RvP.

Surely we can rely on the fact that at least one of Wengers signings is a dud. And with RVP gone that leaves Gervinho with a spot, with only Oxlaide "too precious to play" chamberlain challenging, as Podolski/Giroud will be up top, with the other doing a Chamahk

With so many good players eligible to play as the two holding midfielders this year Wenger may be tempted to use players with the right skillset to play advanced positions such as in the hole. I think Wilshere or Arteta might have a shout there. This might push whoever's in the hole such as Ox wide at Gervinho's expense. Ox has also played ahead of Gervinho a few times, or if Podolski and Giroud both play, Podolski may well do so. Even if he doesn't do this, a change in formation might be tempting.

The main striker of his team, classified as a midfielder, for a side that went on a winning run over United, Arsenal, Newcastle and Liverpool when they finally woke up - for 7m? I'll take it.

      Hi Catmac,
Keepers look decent but I think you'd be mental to pass up De Gea at 6.0
Defence - not a fan of Wigan and I think Swansea may struggle a bit this year
Midfield - Siggy may not start if VDV stays, Ramires plays fairly deep usually.
Forwards - Don't like Rodallega at all, I'd prefer Agureo to Rooney for GW1 at least

      Hope that helped 🙂

Nice defence, though Koscielny may struggle for cleanies early on

Pog for DGW, then look to D.Cisse or similar.
Cabaye on set pieces, and Ba and Cisse in front of him for assist potential. I like Ramires at the price too as an alternative.
Koscielny's maturing into a great defender. Will lose him if I go with Szczseny in goal.

    Bale 9.5 Taabrat 6.0 Pienaar 6.5 B Arfa 7.5 Noble 5.0

    Torres 10.0  (dgw), Rooney 12.0, D Cisse 6.5

Looks fairly decent, I think Ben Arfa is a bit overpriced this year compared to Pienaar/McClean etc. I'd prefer a Chelsea mid to Bale for GW1. And Aguero to Rooney for GW1.

hmm, decided to go Yayaless I think. I will have Aguero already, gonna go heavy up front and get Bent in, will have 1 big hitter (Lamps or Hazard until GW3 then look at a switch to Kagawa/Yaya/Bale) and go mid-priced in midfield. I feel the value will be in mids this year and that big hitters in defence and strikers are the way to go.

    So something like

    Foster/Mignolet

    Huth, Vidic, Clichy, Tomkins, Fabio

Lampard, Taarabt, Noble, Maloney, Ireland/Gibson (someone else around 5 - 5.5)

    Aguero, Rooney, Bent

Considering dropping Yaya myself and, once I sell Aguero get in Lescott/Clichy.

Parker is 5.5, worth considering if a RB rule is introduced.

      Hey JK
Looks decent, why have you decided against having De Gea? Though I like the Vidic pick.
I'd prefer the 1.0m and Wilson instead of Huth. Forward line is great but it's affected your midfield a bit. 4 cheap mids is a bit risky.

Vidic more nailed an offers an attacking threat. De Gea and a 4.5 is more. Huth is the only Stoke player I'd consider, he's nailed on and can score a brace easily. Tis risky indeed. but no risk no reward. Always have a wc to bail me out.

I like the Bent pick actually (no homo) Could be a nice differential, but I've gone for Djibril Cisse for my 3rd striker, too hard to resist at 6.5

A fair bit of Lampard love going on. I thought he was reinventing himself as a deep lying playmaker?

With Mata, Hazard & Marin all playing the attacking mid/winger/inside forward positions, surely this continues to leave Lampard further back?

Mata won't start the season due to the Olympics. Marin and Hazard are new, so Frank should start for the DGW.

Lovely. Mata is out of the equation.

Leaves the other two + Lampard for the start of the season. The newer lads are more dynamic players than Lampard. Hmmmmm, think i'll take a small risk & opt for Hazard.

You have known knowns & known unknowns. When you have unknown unknowns & (on paper) a poor start, it's best to leave it until we see how things pan out.

Not going anywhere near Liverpool's squad until we know more about Brendan's untouchables & tactics.
