Michael Laudrup’s first move as manager of Swansea saw Spanish central defender Jose Manuel Flores sign from Serie A outfit Genoa in a deal thought to be in the region of £2m. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year deal and re-unites with the new Swans boss, having previously worked under the Dane at Mallorca…

The transfer goes some way to addressing the gap left in Swansea’s central defence after Steven Caulker returned to parent club Tottenham following a successful loan spell at the Liberty Stadium last season, with Flores, or “Chico” as he is known, set to partner Ashley Williams in the heart of the back-four. Similar to fellow new boy Jonathan De Guzman, the 6 foot 2 inch stopper revealed the chance to work with Laudrup again was a key factor in his move to the Welsh club, going on to say:

“He knows me as a person and a player, so I was honoured when the call came. I believe the manager will be good for Swansea and they have done extremely well to get him. Swansea’s way of playing is the same style as he wants to play the game. He is the right person to take this club forward. Being brought up in Spain, I have the same culture of possession and passing football. I like to play from the back, come forward with the ball, and add to the possession game.”

The Statistics

The centre-half began his career as an 18-year old with hometown club Cadiz. After a couple of seasons in the reserves, Flores was promoted to the first-team but made just three appearances before being sent out on loan to the Spanish lower leagues during the 2007-08 campaign. Spells at Racing Club Portuense and Barcelona B harvested five goals in 32 games for the clubs before La Liga side Almeria came calling.

Over the course of a couple of campaigns, Flores played 47 times and scored a single goal – his displays in helping the club to a solid 13th place finish in 2009-10 caught the eye of Genoa and the centre-half moved to Italy in the summer of 2010 on a five-year deal. He failed to impress during his one season in Serie A, however, and, with just 15 appearances under his belt in his debut campaign, was loaned to Mallorca last term with the Spanish side given an option to make the deal permanent. Back in his native country, Flores came to the fore and was an integral part of the first-team, making 33 appearances, with his reading of the game and ability to intercept his opponents’ play one of the most impressive across Europe’s top five leagues last season.

The Prospects

While many fear a drop in Swansea’s potential following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, Laudrup is keen for his new charges to maintain their slick passing game as the Welsh club look to avoid “second season syndrome” after last term’s 11th place finish. His ability on the ball should see Flores fit seamlessly into the club’s system and with 14 clean sheets accrued in 2011/12, Fantasy managers may be eyeing up the Swans backline once again.

The major issue this time round is pricing, however. Michel Vorm came in at 4.0 in the previous campaign but his heroics between the posts have already seen his starting price soar this time round, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuing him at 5.5. “Chico” has been handed a 5.0 starting price by the FPL in today’s published price list, putting him on a par with established starters Angel Rangel, Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams. Unless he can display some attacking threat or start soaking up some EA PPI points from king of the blocks, Williams, Flores will surely take a back seat, then.

Intriguingly, Flores has been slapped with a relatively low price in the Sky Sports game in comparison to his defensive team-mates. His 5.0 valuation is considerably less than Williams’ 6.9, with Rangel the next cheapest option at 5.7. In this game, then, the new boy looks an enticing prospect for those Fantasy managers looking for a route into Laudrup’s defence.

A kind opening schedule only furthers his appeal. Home clashes with (WHM, SUN, EVE) in the first five Gameweeks are allied with trips to QPR and Villa and offer Laudrup a strong platform to kick off his career at the Liberty Stadium in style. Whether Fantasy managers will be celebrating every Swansea clean sheet in a similar manner to last season is more than a little unlikely, though.

i think it'll still be a few days probably a week.

They've stopped teasing price releases by releasing the full list only to now start teasing prizes and rule changes, so i believe they'll stretch it a while longer. Hope i'm wrong, but either way, i'm happy to be patient.

First RMT , obviously very rough but I like the concept of it (always been a fan of 3 big strikers)

    De Gea / 4.0 GK
    Lescott / Dawson / Cuellar / Tomkins / Monk
    Hazard / Kagawa / Noble / Pienaar/Nzogbia / Guthrie
    Torres / Rooney / Tevez

    Explanation:

4.0 gk because I dont intend to rotate De Gea even vs the top clubs. Dawson assuming he is first choice CB (I believe it be him and the new guy Vertonghen?). Monk assuming he's nailed on but if not easily replaced by another 4.5 defender. Any idea on who to choose between Pienaar (assuming he goes Everton permanently) or Zog? Guthrie is just bench fodder. Big front 3.

        why?
nzog has easier fixtures and mcleish aint the manager anymore. he was a great differential when he was at wigan. pienaar yet to be confirmed as everton player and start off against united.

i just see pienaar getting more assists from jelavic and racking up more points (presuming he moves to everton in the next 3 weeks)
and nzog isn't the same player he used to be, i think he drew off the fact that everything revolved around him at wigan, which isn't the case at villa.

          just how i see it..

get ivanovic for lesscott for double gameweek
i doubt dawson will start (if your talking about spurs one), get someone like hangeland instead
same story with monk, i would get williams instead
get bale for kagawa for spurs coverage
then downgrade nzogbia for a 5.0 like maloney.

if manU turn out to be a defensive goliath with vidic back and everyone else in top form the de gea call could work out. however, for the first 1/4 of the season manU have among the toughest schedules of the top4 contenders. i'd look more to someone like friedel/schwarzer/vorm/howard for the opening stretch. the downgrade in price would also allow you a viable 2nd gk option.

don't like the deadbencher gk idea, but that's just me.

That price list does give food for thought. Only £3M in price difference between the bottom and top DEF and GK choices (Kompany excepted at present). What is this madness.

It's going to be a very different game this year.
I wouldn't be surprised if the price changes happen a lot quicker to split the field.

Prices drip fed on twitter, super low values. What other surprises are in store?

Greetings again ffs addicts. I'm looking for some opinions on this defense:

    De Gea (6) Jas (4.5) (10.5)
    Cuellar (4.5) Shawcross (5) Ridgewell (5) Ivanovic (6.5) Lescott (6.5) (27.5)

The idea is to play de gea the entire season with Jas's good fixtures as cover at the start of the season in case de gea is rested after the olympics.

Ivanovic and Lescott will play most weeks with the other three rotating. The sun/sto/wba threeway rotation looks pretty good: rdg, RDG, EVE, LIV. RDG, SWA, QPR, NEW, SUN, AVL, QPR, whm, FUL, QPR, STK, avl, WHM, NOR, LIV, SOT

Is this defense too expensive? I see a lot of people skimping in defense. Also what are people's opinions out there on the likelihood of cuellar/ridgewell/ivanovic's starting places?

At last, something to waste my time at work with! Old school paper and pencil method have got me to this so far-

    GK
    De Gea

    Def
    A Cole Lescott Cellular

    Mid
    Hazard Kagawa Bale N. Dyer

    Fw
    Aguero Bent Pog

    Jask
    Wilson
    Fabio
    Noble
    Total 100m

I would an extra .5 to upgrade Fabio to Hangeland, also .5 to do Dyer to De Guzman.

            Kolarov.

Which means Clichy will play 95% of the time, seeing as Kolarov is absolutely dire in defence.

I suppose Zabaleta could be considered a threat too, but he is far more likely to be vying with Richards for the right back spot..

Don't see why he wouldn't play, the Olympics is hardly going to leave him exhausted, as keepers tend not to have to use too much energy (particularly when they play for spain..) If anything, the Olympics should be good match practice, and it's not as if he has to travel very far either.

I've been playing around with this idea. With West Ham, Villa and Swansea's good opening fixtures we are afforded several good cut price options to begin the season with. The team I have drafted below has a strong defense to begin with (it's unlikely I will be using early free transfers on defenders). If I go with Bent, Graham and Noble (as well as Tevez over Aguero/Rooney) with the intention of playing all three through each of the begining few fixtures, I can save 2.5 while still having tot, man, chels and mnc attacking cover. My plan would then be to use that free 2.5 for getting in those players who show early form and to get on top of price rises. Here's what the team looks like anyway:

    De Gea (6), Jas (4.5)
    Cuellar (4.5), Wilson (4.5), Hangeland (5), Ivanovic (6.5), Lescott (6.5)
    Bale (9.5), Noble (5), Kagawa (8.5), Lamps (9), 4.5
    Tevez (9), Bent (8.5), Graham (6)

The only glaring problem is that if Rooney or RVP explode early I can't quite reach them.

I'm interested in hearing peoples thoughts on this team. Does it seem like a good idea or am I being a bit clever?

in the words of slick rick and rahzel on that dopest of dope cuts, night riders, h-h-heeeeere we go:

    Friedel (5.5) / Green (4.5)
    Lescott (6.5) / Vertonghen (6.5) / AWilliams (5.0) / Fabio (4.5) / Gorkss (4.0)
    Hazard (9.5) / Dempsey (9.5) / Noble (5.0) / N/Zogbia (6.5) / Kagawa (8.5)
    Balotelli (9.0) / Adebayor (9.5) / Vaz Te (5.5)

i think there's a bit in the bank (around 0.5)

Do we really see Pog doing that well this season? I know he's the best option out there for 5, but can we see Reading doing much? (though he does have a DGW)

Anyone tempted by Long at 6, should be nailed on, possibly on pens.

Just can;t decide for that cheap striker spot

    Pog
    Long
    Graham
    Lambert
    Petric
    Ruiz
    Rodaleega
    Vaz Te
    Cole

    So many options
