Michael Laudrup’s first move as manager of Swansea saw Spanish central defender Jose Manuel Flores sign from Serie A outfit Genoa in a deal thought to be in the region of £2m. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year deal and re-unites with the new Swans boss, having previously worked under the Dane at Mallorca…

The transfer goes some way to addressing the gap left in Swansea’s central defence after Steven Caulker returned to parent club Tottenham following a successful loan spell at the Liberty Stadium last season, with Flores, or “Chico” as he is known, set to partner Ashley Williams in the heart of the back-four. Similar to fellow new boy Jonathan De Guzman, the 6 foot 2 inch stopper revealed the chance to work with Laudrup again was a key factor in his move to the Welsh club, going on to say:

“He knows me as a person and a player, so I was honoured when the call came. I believe the manager will be good for Swansea and they have done extremely well to get him. Swansea’s way of playing is the same style as he wants to play the game. He is the right person to take this club forward. Being brought up in Spain, I have the same culture of possession and passing football. I like to play from the back, come forward with the ball, and add to the possession game.”

The Statistics

The centre-half began his career as an 18-year old with hometown club Cadiz. After a couple of seasons in the reserves, Flores was promoted to the first-team but made just three appearances before being sent out on loan to the Spanish lower leagues during the 2007-08 campaign. Spells at Racing Club Portuense and Barcelona B harvested five goals in 32 games for the clubs before La Liga side Almeria came calling.

Over the course of a couple of campaigns, Flores played 47 times and scored a single goal – his displays in helping the club to a solid 13th place finish in 2009-10 caught the eye of Genoa and the centre-half moved to Italy in the summer of 2010 on a five-year deal. He failed to impress during his one season in Serie A, however, and, with just 15 appearances under his belt in his debut campaign, was loaned to Mallorca last term with the Spanish side given an option to make the deal permanent. Back in his native country, Flores came to the fore and was an integral part of the first-team, making 33 appearances, with his reading of the game and ability to intercept his opponents’ play one of the most impressive across Europe’s top five leagues last season.

The Prospects

While many fear a drop in Swansea’s potential following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, Laudrup is keen for his new charges to maintain their slick passing game as the Welsh club look to avoid “second season syndrome” after last term’s 11th place finish. His ability on the ball should see Flores fit seamlessly into the club’s system and with 14 clean sheets accrued in 2011/12, Fantasy managers may be eyeing up the Swans backline once again.

The major issue this time round is pricing, however. Michel Vorm came in at 4.0 in the previous campaign but his heroics between the posts have already seen his starting price soar this time round, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuing him at 5.5. “Chico” has been handed a 5.0 starting price by the FPL in today’s published price list, putting him on a par with established starters Angel Rangel, Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams. Unless he can display some attacking threat or start soaking up some EA PPI points from king of the blocks, Williams, Flores will surely take a back seat, then.

Intriguingly, Flores has been slapped with a relatively low price in the Sky Sports game in comparison to his defensive team-mates. His 5.0 valuation is considerably less than Williams’ 6.9, with Rangel the next cheapest option at 5.7. In this game, then, the new boy looks an enticing prospect for those Fantasy managers looking for a route into Laudrup’s defence.

A kind opening schedule only furthers his appeal. Home clashes with (WHM, SUN, EVE) in the first five Gameweeks are allied with trips to QPR and Villa and offer Laudrup a strong platform to kick off his career at the Liberty Stadium in style. Whether Fantasy managers will be celebrating every Swansea clean sheet in a similar manner to last season is more than a little unlikely, though.

I understand Aguero is a little prone to rotation but not going in with both might be a gamble. You could easily fall behind by a few points after the first GW.

Yes you like different strategy but this could hurt you. Just saying not going in with both is a bit of a risky gamble. Have a look in the Community Shield i guess. We will definitely have a good idea. Aguero could run riot against SOT.

MUN is far from a shit defence. Vidic is back remember that.

Could it be worth playing a 4-3-3 this season?

My thought process is that there aren't really any 'big hitters' like Ronaldo, Lampard, Gerrard, Fabregas etc any more and it seems like the defence and strikers could be where the value is at.

You could double up on City and United at the back (1 x gk and 3 x df) from them, or maybe even throw a Baines or Vermaelen instead of one of them, and then have 2 cheap rotating defenders to play alternate weeks.

Then in midfield you could go with Bale and Walcott who would play every week and then have 3 dirt cheap rotating mids for a combined 13.5m (4.5 each) who are just there to pick up 2pts when they play.

Up top you'd then have around 27.5m to pick 3 strikers who would play every week...

    Rooney 12m
    Bent 8.5m
    Graham 6m

    (26.5m)

You could obviously vary them depending on fixtures.

Noble and Maloney don't rotate well, you'll have a bit of trouble there I think. I don't really rate Hangeland. And Fulham were pretty abyssmal defensively. Even if he's 5 mill. I'd rather have a look at WBrom or maybe Williams/Rangel from Swansea.

      Get some United in there.

ull of players who won’t do that well in fpl or will need some time to settle in
      is this your first year?
try to get players that are involved in goals instead of players like song

also, get rid of all ur forwards. aguero, pog, ade, torres are all better fpl prospects

Alright I was fooled by Kaz/Tosey posting on the previous post...
So it seems nobody likes Tevez at 9M.
From all reports he was one of Cities best yesterday, and Mancini seems to think he is staying. After last season I expect him to be first choice (with plenty of rotation as fixtures congest)
Thinking of going with him for SOT liv QPR and out as he will be rotated with CL etc.
No love in the RMT’s though from what I have seen.

Yeah it's way too early for trying to guess who, just a little surprised that he hasn't been mentioned at all.
I guess Aguero is cheaper than expected, but the main reason I'd go Aguero over Tevez for the first 3 GW's is a reliable captain, given the Chelsea DGW it sort of rules that out IMO.

Oh, ok, since you're polite (and persistent 😉 )

Looks decent from what little I know. Not sold on Hazard personally, I'll definitely be steering clear until (if) he makes an impact. I prefer to let new players to the league bed in a little and although his record in France is impressive there's just something about him I don't like.

Forward line is strong - like it.

No Man City or Man Utd defensive cover? In fact, very little Manchester cover in general - I'd probably look to crowbar some more in somehow. Not sure how without downgrading a forward though 😕

Ugh, I remember I went against my hunch last season to get Aguero as he'd never played in the premier league and I paid for it dearly, then in GW2 ignored him again as Torres' fixtures were too good to ignore.

I think people are excited by his potential. He scored and assisted a lot last season, albeit in the Ligue 1. Also I think around 9 of his goals were penalties which Mr Lampard won't want to give up!

Having Hazard & Kagawa looks nice on paper but I think starting with both might be a gamble

    Quick poll?

    A) Fonte + Song
    B) Williams (SWA) + Maloney (save 0.5)
    C) Fonte + Maloney (save 1.5)

Also consider that the defender from the options above is to rotate with Gorkss (REA)

interesting like every start of PL, so everyone have their opionos, i also personaly have my. I think Ba will be awesome on the start like last season, also Balotelli is madness for me at the start...Thinking for the third stricker, maybe someone from arsenal or any sugests are wellcome !

defence will be man. utd and man.city + tomkins

    gk - cech

miedfield - noble + some cheap and good players, villa, QPR + west ham mostly

    Thoughts ?

don't go crazy in defence. by all accounts get: 1 united(DDG lokks great value), 1 city for the long term, chelsea for DGW but then outside those i suggest some 4.5ers eg. cuellar, wilson, fabio. overspending in defence IMO is silly as mids and forwards get the highest points. are you more surprised by a 10+ score from a mid or from a defender? also u ain't gunna captain defenders, so why spend so much on em?

Actually Ba wasn't awesome at the start, he was weak due to Ramadan and didn't fire until a few games in.

I'm waiting on him until Newcastle's fixtures improve/we know more about the Carroll move and I'm satisfied he's had a good meal inside him.

If you go with de Gea you'll probably have a 4.5 as cover, and Federici is as good as any. Only problem is that SAF tends to give his backup goalie a game from time to time in an easy home match - so an ideal partner for De Gea may be one that doesn't rotate well with him.

De Gea will start the vast majority of the games, so it's a bit of a waste to have a £5.5m keeper that'll only play a few games when you can have a keeper that'll also hardly play for you for £1m cheaper.
