FPL top 10k: How many Gameweek 37 ‘doublers’ does the average manager own?

Using LiveFPL’s vast array of tools, we look at the squad make-ups and chip usage of the world’s leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers ahead of Double Gameweek 37.

We will examine the 1,000 names in LiveFPL’s ‘Legendary Managers’ list – the historic cream of the crop, much like our own Hall of Fame – but chiefly those in the top 10k in the current overall rankings.

Between the two groups, these are the managers who can offer us a better gauge of FPL ownership and chip strategy, as opposed to the overall figures that are skewed by the vast numbers of untouched ‘ghost teams’.

There is heaps of useful information beyond overall and top 10k figures on the LiveFPL site, of course, such as ownership stats for different rank tiers.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: GAMEWEEK 36 CAPTAINCY

Above: Gameweek 36 captaincy stats for the all-time greats (right) and the top 10k (left)

Quite surprisingly, given the number of players who had a ‘double’ in Gameweek 36, Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) was the runaway captaincy candidate – was this ‘effective ownership’ (EO) driving fear-induced decisions and/or just the top 10k avoiding risks in order to consolidate their ranks?

READ MOREWhat is ‘effective ownership’ (EO) and why is it so widely talked about in FPL?

The figures from the all-time greats show these managers taking more punts, while a look at Salah’s dwindling ‘EO’ further down the rank tiers also reflects a willingness to take more of a gamble in a last-ditch attempt for a big green arrow:

TOP 10K: CHIP USAGE

Almost 6% of managers in the top 10k used their Free Hit this week but the main activity centred around the Bench Boost.

Over a third of the leading Fantasy bosses activated this chip ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

Over half of the top 10k managers have maxed out their allocation, while just under that have only chip remaining.

That leaves a lucky 1.0% with two chips still to use in the final two Gameweeks.

The Free Hit accounts for most of the unused chips, with over 40% of the top 10,000 managers still having one of these to play.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: TEMPLATE SQUAD FOR GAMEWEEK 36

The ‘template’ defence and midfield remained as they were but there was a change between the posts and two up top.

The ‘double doubles’ of Everton and Leicester have helped propel Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Richarlison (£7.5m) up the popularity stakes, with Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m) and Harry Kane (£12.4m) making way.

Eddie Nketiah‘s (£5.6m) stock continues to rise, meanwhile, with the Arsenal striker now the most-owned forward in the top 10k. Wout Weghorst (£6.3m) drops out.

OWNERSHIP STATS FOR THE 1,000 ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’ IN GAMEWEEK 36

AVERAGE NUMBER OF DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 37 PLAYERS OWNED PER CLUB

While it was fairly straightforward for most of us to get at least 11 ‘doublers’ out in Gameweek 36, the vast majority of managers won’t be able to get anywhere near that figure without a Free Hit in Gameweek 37 – although many wouldn’t want a full house anyway.

The average boss in the top 10k owns just over three players from Everton, Leicester, Villa, Burnley and Palace combined.

The Eagles, interestingly, are the least represented club of this quintet, with Wilfried Zaha (£6.8m) an interesting differential at 0.91%.

Other eye-catching low-owned picks from these sides are Lucas Digne (£5.0m) at 2.31%, Danny Ings (£7.7m) at 0.09% and Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) at 0.27%.

Surely you keep KDB. Son looks good for gw38 but Burnley at home, 2 days after playing a tough NLD might mean that Spurs struggle slightly.

Agreed with this. I'm deciding between Salah + Robbo or Salah + Diaz/Jota, but I'm also considering Mane + Jota/Diaz so I really don't know what to do but hopefully the FA Cup final will help. I do feel like that fixture needs to be attacked with how woeful Soton have been of late but Robbo/TAA can do plenty of damage too

Picking Dias over Laporte on FH because of unconfirmed injury rumour (groin concerns) turned out to be a huge game changer and these points (8 and counting) will most likely be the difference if I make top 10k or not. So bloody annoying when you have too much information and don't know who's speaking the truth anymore, so you just go with safer option on paper and fail.

I went for Alonso... On paper Laporte was safer option because of Dias' injury risks though, I didn't even consider Dias. These things happen and competition close to top 10k is very hard.

Laporte was the safer option on paper because he hasn't just come back from an injury.

Tough break, 50/50, but basing 'safer' on an unconfirmed rumour is a logic gap.

Possibly, just so inconsistent at the moment. I'll be sticking with James but otherwise nailing down the right option(s) could be tricky. Suppose FH does help in that regard though by delaying the decision & giving max flexibility to your squad

If Pool win their next 2 they will go all out in GW38 imo and they should win the next 2 comfortably.

I think FH is better for navigating a narrower set of circumstances than a dgw say. But it's harder with squad rotations in gw38 but it's going to help massively having that flexibility over 1 ft.

    Ramsdale / Dubravka
    TAA, Cancelo, Cash, James, Alonso*
    KdB, Son, Saka, Maddison*, Coutinho*
    Kane, Gelhardt, Greenwood

No chips, 1 ft, 0.5 itb, 23 pts to top 10k now

What are others planning in this situation? Probabalities to get into top 10k are getting slimmer, thx to Alonso, Maddison and Coutinho. I think I have to try to attack with multiple hits for dgw players "all in" style and just hope for the best. Moves that I am considering are: Alonso to Digne, Zaha in (he has MU home gw 38), KdB to Jota/Diaz and perhaps Richa/Ings in for Greenwood. Zaha looks like the best punt because of dgw and MU being possibly good fixture gw 38. Any other CP assets to consider? What has happened to Conor Callagher?!?

Cheers. I'll admit I've found seeing some Twitter accounts base a lot of their decisions on algorithms as a little bit, well I'm not quite sure really. We all use stats to help us make decisions and moves, but I guess I just feel relying a lot on AI telling you to do or not do something in FPL really takes the fun and game aspect out of FPL. Similarly seeing many people make no effort with their team and simply copy a big account's team each week is pretty embarrassing to look at but it happens. I'm just glad that no-one in my MLs does either of these because I think I'd probably just stop playing then. I wouldn't feel any enjoyment from not making my own calls or from playing someone else that doesn't.

In my opinion I think James might be telling porkies...

Surely we all use AI, some who can't be arsed to play the game and simply copy what is shown or others, like me, who us it only for 50/50 margin calls.

Would you say the RMT option in members tools is AI?

This is true - could bench him - but the point is it enables richarlison if it's worth it.

I suspect gw38 will see rotation so want a strong bench too.

That's fair enough. Everton and Villa fixtures both rubbish in 38 but at least Everton will have something to play for. Richarlison is worth a hit imo.

I hope there are fewer DGWs next season. I think its become less a case of picking the players you like and more a case of planning as if you are someone's PA.

Timely post given my comment below lol. I just wonder if ditching one of Son or Kane, means you can stock up on City defenders (who are surely now rotation proof)?

Currently sitting on a healthy climb up in an extremely competitive cash league, but spotted a couple of people still have FH.

I burned mine in 33 but looking at teams and fixtures for 37, is there anyone you'd really bust a gut to get, that would warrant wholesale change from the 'template'?

    - Could understand Richarlison but most can get to him within 2 moves, Cancelo is absolutely essential, probably Laporte too now.
    - Chelsea assets if you did a GW34 wildcard are looking dicey

tl;dr but interested to know if anyone going for a FH37 is going for anything properly outlandish?

You can manage just fine without Richarlison imo. I'm probably going without him on FH (only Pickford from Everton). Think there could be some nice scores from cheap doubling defenders but no one as essential as Cancelo. Looking at a few differentials like Olise but not going full outlandish

I disagree on Cancelo or Laporte being essential. I'm on FH and think I'll be going without, West Ham tend to give City a good game when they play them and they're aiming for EL spots again now. But overall I agree, not many doublers I'm looking at thinking "they're going to be huge this week", probably the opposite actually

It's not necessarily their defensive points, they were both frighteningly good going forward against Newcastle.

True, but the likes of Zinchenko and Cancelo were up against Krafth and Targett. Good defenders of course but hardly frightening going forward. Facing Bowen and Benrahma attacking you down the wings will push them back a bit and might have to make them think twice on certain occasions when looking to make a run
