Salah and van Dijk injury latest ahead of Gameweek 38

An update on the fitness of Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) somehow failed to materialise from the broadcast section of Jurgen Klopp’s press conference on Monday, to much gnashing of teeth from Fantasy managers.

But the embargoed section delivered the goods later in the evening.

The Reds’ head coach was facing the media ahead of Liverpool’s Gameweek 37 fixture at Southampton, eventually providing news on the Egyptian and Virgil van Dijk (£6.8m).

“No [they won’t play on Tuesday]. Virg definitely not but that was pretty much clear before the [Chelsea] game already that I thought, ‘OK, this is the game now.’ He played really a lot and then Saturday-Tuesday again. It was clear.

“They are both OK. The target would be for both that they could be involved again on the weekend. Properly involved, bench or whatever, few minutes or start, I don’t know, we will see that, because that would be perfect for the [UCL final]. But if not then we take each day afterwards. But we are very positive, or [have] no doubt about the final. I’m pretty realistic about the Wolves game, but tomorrow rather not.” – Jurgen Klopp on Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk

The Liverpool boss also hinted at plenty of changes for Tuesday’s clash on the south coast, which follows hot on the heels of a physically and mentally gruelling 120 minutes at Wembley.

“We only played the 120 minutes two days ago, so when the boys arrive today, I have to make a lot of decisions. What I can promise, we will line up a team only for one reason – to try to win the game at Southampton. We have to see who is able to help. The 30 extra minutes [in the FA Cup final] made a big difference.

“This is a high-energetic, well-organised team we face. Imagine we go there with ten, eight players who played 120 minutes. It makes no sense. That’s why we have to make changes. I don’t know how many, we will see.” – Jurgen Klopp

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£8.4m), Ibrahima Konate (£5.1m), Thiago Alcantara (£5.3m), Jordan Henderson (£4.9m) and Sadio Mane (£11.8m) all lasted the full two hours against Chelsea at the weekend, with Luis Diaz (£8.1m) and a cramping Andrew Robertson (£7.3m) replaced in extra-time.

The only other medical update we got from Klopp concerned Fabinho (£5.4m), who is progressing “very well” but not enough to face Southampton.

The Saints’ manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl, gave us his own press conference hours before Klopp, revealing that Stuart Armstrong (£5.8m) and Fraser Forster (£4.4m) were fresh doubts.

Bowens likely to finish top 5 fpl asset for the season but none of us own him.

    Why is that?

Double Gameweek blinkers (plus the rotation risk around the Europa League before they were knocked out)

He also got injured for or just before BGW30 where he would have been a huge player, then Europa rotation worries came.

I owned him for a very profitable period of the season. Got rid before his injury and poor fixture run.

Even mentioned how Villa have a short turn around to City and how he sees a City win to maybe try convince himself that mass rotation is okay for tomorrow.

A little early, but what GW38 transfer would you make here:

    Raya
    Cancelo - Matip - Sessegnon
    Son - KDB - Maddison - Zaha
    Vardy - Richarlison - Ings

    Pickford - KDH - Holgate - Digne

    A) Digne > Dier/Royal/Sanchez
    B) Digne > Jansson
    C) Ings > Toney
    D) Digne & Ings > James + Nketiah (bench) -4

I think you've got to wait until after Thursday. If Everton beat Palace on Thursday, then they've beaten relegation and will be out on the p*ss for two days. They'll then be in no fit state to play Arsenal on Sunday. Nketiah with an Arsenal defender or Saka in for Zaha would then be my advice.

In that case Arsenal, along with Chelsea and Spurs are the teams to target. With no Arsenal or Chelsea in my squad, D looks a good option. Not a fan of taking hits last week of the season though.

For every comment like this, we get one saying "why is the captain poll not open yet?".

If anything major happens, we can always reset the results and make a note in Captain Sensible of what they were before that point.

If Schmeichel plays Thursday then possibly you've got no playing goalkeeper come Sunday.

Unless Foster's farewell message today is because he's on holiday from Sunday night and switching off!

It read like he's played his last Watford game tho.

would of course caveat this depending on Diaz’s minutes tomorrow. Also, one thing to bear in mind is that Ovrigi will definitely feature on the last day of the season, might even start, given that it will be his last time playing at Anfield. That said, I’d Liverpool do win by a massive margin tomorrow, I think we’ll see a fairly full strength starting 11 for Liverpool on the last day of the season

True but you've also got to predict those benchings or have a decent bench and use transfers across his injuries.

James hauls but Rudiger plays consistently.

I know what you mean, I’d be willing to lose him for James because he offers a far higher ceiling than Matip, not only because the CS is likelier, but he could haul. Appreciate that he scored something ridiculous like 7 points between his two hauls, but if any team is going to put that haul on a silver plate, surely it’s a relegated Watford in GW38

Different styles of tournaments; winning leagues is about how well you can grind out results over the long term. UCL is about being able to beat the best - game management, tactics, avoiding mistakes/capitalizing on your opponents is key. The margins are often very fine.

Would be interesting next season to compare the odds of a team winning the CL compared to winning the PL next season. I suspect they would be quite a bit longer for a Man City/Liverpool, but possibly not as much for Chelsea/whoever finishes 4th

Thinking of Ings + Digne > James + Origi (-4)

Will have Origi first bench or can start him for Zaha. Hasn't started a game all season but could be a storybook ending for a cult hero. Should really go for Nketiah however.

ML Leader has Nketiah, so maybe go for one last wholly unnecessary punt

Don't bench Zaha, he's at home to the worst, most demotivated team in the league and has a point to prove. Plus last home game. Good for 10+ points I reckon.

Would you bench anyone on this squad for Nketiah/Origi? If I had to, it would probably be Cancelo - was tempted to sell him on WC37

        Raya
        Cancelo - Matip - Sessegnon - James
        Son - KDB - Maddison - Zaha
        Vardy - Richarlison

        Pickford - Origi/Nketiah - KDH - Holgate

Has anything in football ever been more certain than Arsenal dropping points tonight? Might be there last shot at CL football for a long time with the cash Newcastle are about to spend.

The last 20 games, where Arsenal have won 18 against Newcastle United with a draw and a loss suggest differently for tonight at least.

Takes a long time to build a top 4 squad.

Unlucky for Son captainers not to atleast get 2 goals.. (Son captainer here!)

Son (c) for (nor) it is!

He's the standout captain pick along with Kane for gw38. I kinda fancy a punt elsewhere but not sure it's a wise thing to do.

Yeah, I'm going Kane. Won't be much difference between Son and Kane imo, both will feast against the porous Norwich backline.

I guess not even Pep has decided.

Him or Sterling or Mahrez normally.

Final gw to go! Did Richarlison to Kane for free..

        Dubravka,
        Cancelo, TAA, Alonso, Amartey
Son (c), KDB, Luiz Diaz, Kulu,
        Kane, Nketiah

        Foster, Mateta, Gordon, Holding

        Looks good?

If you're chasing and looking for an explosive week, could be a good play. Maybe Mount if you have a midfield slot open

Wait for Thursday’s lineup, as they have a small break between that and Sunday and have had a bigger rest from the final and the upcoming Leicester game. Albeit they’ve played 120 minutes so arguably are in more of a rest now, but the Leicester game is a bigger game and can seal UCL whereas the Watford game is a dead rubber

Agree with this. If they win Thursday, they have nothing to play for on Sunday. Personally I think they'll struggle on Thursday, and so may need something on Sunday.

Oh! I'm also thinking of Chelsea defensive triple up with James Alonso Mendi. To me it looks like the best last week punt.
