FPL

Which FPL assets played the most minutes in 2021/22?

While the Premier League Christmas schedule looks more forgiving in 2022/23, the autumn calendar appears more congested.

Between Gameweeks 4 and 15, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur will play Premier League and/or Champions League football twice a week, every week, except during the September international break.

Premier League managers will also be allowed to make five substitutions per game, two more than what we are used to seeing, which provides an added challenge for Fantasy bosses.

So, with rest and rotation perhaps biting harder and earlier in 2022/23, here we take a look at which players played the most minutes last season.

For only the third Premier League season ever, no outfield player managed to play every single minute of the 2021/22 campaign.

However, some came very close, as detailed below.

NameTeamMinutes
Matty CashAston Villa3378
Conor CoadyWolverhampton Wanderers3362

Joao CanceloManchester City3227
Marc GuehiCrystal Palace3223
Moussa SissokoWatford3221
James Ward-ProwseSouthampton3215
Pierre-Emile HojbjergTottenham Hotspur3196

Aston Villa right-back Matty Cash only missed 42 minutes of Premier League action all season, while Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Conor Coady was just 58 minutes short.

In addition, the duo were the only outfield players to start all 38 Premier League matches.

Meanwhile, the ability of the big clubs to rotate their star-studded squads meant that only four players from the traditional ‘big six’ feature on the above lists – Harry Kane, Joao Cancelo, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Bukayo Saka – as they each racked up an impressive 36 Premier League starts.

A club-by-club breakdown is below, with the top few performers in each category included.

Just noticed the FPL team of the season above here - my draft has all of TWO of them!

I did some maths this morning Andy - and as our thinking seems similar, I thought you might appreciate it.
      Looking at the;
      - 541 formation
      - big at the back
      - Haaland up top
      - spread of 'mid-range MIDs' (6-8m)

I looked at what their score would be based on last season's points and then compared it against a team with the most popular big three premiums of Haaland/Salah/Son.

As both included Haaland, I ignored his potential points for both teams. And where my draft included Kulu - I took his points per match total and extrapolated it across 38 games (big assumption I know).
I didn't include captain scores or chip potential (as both have weak benches anyway).
And I structured the HSS team as follows using Raga's pricing prediction:
      Top scoring (TS) 4.5G GK
      TAA/Cancelo/(TS) 5.0/(TS) 4.5/(2ndTS)4.5
      Salah/Son/(TS) 6.5/(TS) 6.0
      Haaland
      Bench fodder
(There's also an assumption that you would choose the 'top scoring' at each of the price points)

Now I realise that there are many ways to skin a cat, but... the Haaland only draft came out 45 points higher.

      My take away from this is twofold;
      1. We don't need to fear not owning Salah/Son if you can effectively invest the money elsewhere.
      2. I really need to stop faffing around here and start doing the job I'm supposedly paid for!

Hope you find it moderately interesting.

45 points higher before captains, that could easily be made up by having 3 premium captain options to 1.

But would it? You'd have to find the money for 3 premiums, and that would be at the expense of the value-midfielders, wouldn't it?

Hasn't that already been taken into account in BRIMBLES82's calculations?

I'd say it has already been taken into account yes.
But, I'd also say to your previous point...

Having three premium options, doesn't mean you always choose the right one!
At the tail end of last season, I owned both Salah & KDB.
I kept captaining Salah, and he kept blanking, whilst KDB outscored him.

Yes, you cannot argue, having more premiums gives you more captiancy options, but... it doesn't mean we will make the right choice.

        Definitely find it interesting cheers.

When you say 'big at the back', do you mean the literal top scorers (or 5 of the top 6 as 4 are Liverpool), or do you include a rotating pair of 4.5s?
You can predict four premiums from Liverpool and City will score high, whereas we have no idea who the best 4.5s will be, and they're likely to be streaky rather than consistent. I'm going with 4 from City/Pool and Cash - he'll be a steady-eddie playing 90mins every game while the fun wingbacks spin around the carousel. I also spotted that in games where I might want to drop him, 5m Kovacic partners nicely. The intention is to set-and-forget the 5 defenders and have them accumulate points over the season, sitting out the inevitable rests.

So I went with TAA/Robbo/VVD/Cancelo/Laporte - as you say - the top scoring 'feasible' 5.
My draft has that but with Dias over Laporte.
I think the past seasons have shown that the points are there consistently, and I fully agree that trying to find the 'gold' in the 4.5 DEFs is a minefield.

It sounds like our early strategies (as you said, at least until 4pm on Sat 6th Aug) are similar.
I'm looking to lock in my defence for as long as possible.
I'm considering going quite aggressive with my MIDs though, watching all the transfer gossip with much interest!

Ready for the game to start now.

So this is what I've got from LiveFPL - same you?

          Raya, 4m
          TAA, Cancelo, Dier, Anderson, Jansson
          Salah, Son, Odegaard, Rodri, 4.5
          Haaland, 4.5, 4.5

          Looks alright, that.

            Sanchez not Raya
            Coady not Dier
            Gallagher not Odegaard

But yeah, the general concept is the same.

Yeah, just to be clear - I only went with the above players to see what the 'highest possible' score was based on last season.
I definitely don't see Gallagher being the force he was last season at Palace.

                As for my starting 4.5
I liked Raya at the start of last season, but I fear the '2nd season effect' on Brentford. Whereas Brighton finished the season really well. If they lose Cucurella that will be a shame, but I'm quite happy looking at a classic Brigthon 1-2 in my GK berths (even despite a tricky GW1 fixture)

I do expect Sanchez to be 5m though. Raya will only be 4.5 cos he was out injured for so long.

Yes u gotta have at least 4. 5-4-1 and 4-5-1 the best formations unless they've reduced the fwd prices overall.

We don't even know yet whether the squad formation will still be 5-5-3.
There is a (remote?) possibility that they might change the squad formation to 5-4-4 and that a number of the highest scoring midfielders become forwards, in which case formations such as 4-2-4 would become possible.

5 at the back will become even more important in that case. Why would u want 4 of the low scoring position players who are bound to be so expensive.

The forwards might no longer be the lowest scoring position.
They new forwards could include Salah, Son, Bowen, Kulusevski, Sterling, Jota, Luis Diaz, Foden, Zaha and Raphinha (as well as Haaland, Kane etc).

5-1-4 might be a possibility, unless they insist on including at least two mids.
Most players are likely to score fewer points as forwards than they did as mids, but the balance between mids and forwards would probably be more even than it has been recently.

Kulusevski, Sterling and Saka can play as Wingers or Midfielders, so could be either Forwards or Mids.

Foden should still be a Midfielder.

My other suggested forwards are Forwards and/or Wingers.

                        So my revised list is:
Forwards: Salah, Son, Bowen, Jota, Luis Diaz, Zaha and Raphinha
Forwards or Midfielders: Kulusevski, Sterling, Saka
Midfielders: KDB, Mount, Maddison, Foden, Gundogan, Ward-Prowse, Barnes, Bruno Fernandes, Trossard, Guimaraes, Eriksen, Smith Rowe, Jorginho, Odegaard, Mbeumo

Is there actually any evidence to back this?
Or is it just the age old speculation over 'what makes a forward a forward?'

I'd be really surprised if that was the change they chose to make.
Whether we like it or not, it's a game for the masses now - putting 4 fwd positions in place could make it very challenging financially.

It was a suggestion originally made by Giggs Boson three weeks ago in a reply to Camzy's hot topic about how forwards could be made better options.
                    .
"The game was designed with a 442 in mind, hence the squad size being a 553.
So I think the game needs to reflect the tactical shift to a 433, and give us a squad size of 544. Then you can put all the wide forwards like Salah, Son, Bowen, Mane etc as forwards, and the midfielders would be filled by players like KDB, Bruno, Mount, Maddison, JWP, Coutinho, Gallagher etc. It think it would create a lot of variation between teams."

We know that FPL Towers sometimes pick up ideas from our site, and the delay in launching suggests that they may be making some big changes - this one might just possibly be one.

It is already a challenge to include as many premium players as we might like in our squads, and FPL are usually pretty good at setting prices at levels that are challenging enough to keep the game interesting but not impossible.

(Oh, and with my MIDs that I based my calculations on - I didn't use the 'best case scenario' of the highest scorers - I used the mids that I plan to have based on their fixtures in the 22/23 campaign)
If you were to do the 'highest possible non-premium midfield' I would expect the difference to be more stark.

All about big at the back!

It is, yeh. Using your formula in the above draft, I don't like the 4.5 def combo and having to start either both or a 4.5 mid/fwd. I think I prefer my Big 4 Def draft, even with just the sole premium in Haaland.

Told you it was fun, though!

The planning is fun... the watching games and hoping goals don't go in against your defence... less fun!

But yeah, I'm looking forward to trying this draft out.
I'm also quite looking forward to taking a bit of the 'pressure' off of having to figure out transfer plan and strategy.
I might aim for my lowest hits/transfer total ever this year!

Big at the back draft on FPL Team (so no idea if this will be possible or not):

            Sanchez (Steele)
            Trent VVD Rob Cancelo Dias
            Kulu Odegard Mount Guimaraes (Eriksen)
            Haaland (Welbeck Gelhardt)

            0.5itb

No Salah, but obviously no space with 3 defenders
No Son, but does have Kulu
Unsure about bench but should get some points if required

Jonny - need to monitor as competing with Semedo and Ait-Nouri.

Gray - didn’t start under Lampard, so monitor also.

Gelhardt will most likely be 5.0m. Not sure currently if that’s justified with such limited budget. Chambers won’t be 4.0

Semedo's on the right, but AIN will be slugging it out with Jonny on the left.
I'd take Gelhardt for 5m - regular impact sub.
The rest I agree with you.

I like it. I think Gameweek One won’t be ideal, but after that you’ll be catching up and surpassing. I really like this. Obviously Salah omission is big but you’ve actively decided on that and I respect it. I do think Haaland explodes early doors. Here we go!

Fofana & Saliba could be steals at 4.5

    Raya 4
    Robbo Cancelo Chilwell Saliba Fofana
    Son Diaz Martinelli Aaronson 4.5
    Haaland Jesus 4.5

Any glaring omissions aside from Salah but I fancy Diaz to explode this season

      Exciting forward line up, there.
Will Saliba be nailed? Same with Martinelli and Aaronson - you could have too many 1-point cameos or sub on your 4.5s.

      1. Fish up a tree

Martinelli could be Ode or even Vieira but preseason will guide me there
Saliba just won young player of season in France @ Marseille & is coming back to play. He is quality & I can see him getting Ben Whites spot.

Leeds spent 20+ mil on Aaronson & I expect him to start & from what I have seen of him he looks very technical & has goals & assists in him.

Again preseason will tell us more.

I am trying to find the cheapies from the off to give the rest of my team as much clout as possible & Sailiba, Aaronson, Fofana & Martinelli are currently top of my list!

I’ve been championing Fofana too. This time two years ago everyone wanted him, and because of last season he will be 4.5m. It’s no coincidence Leicester improved when Fofana was back, absolutely pivotal. Leicester fixtures aren’t the best so I think he’ll need another 4.5 rotation. I’ve had a little look, and although not perfect both Wolves and Brighton rotate decently well.

The Saliba one is interesting, but I think he’s 3rd defender until otherwise. Gabriel and White haven’t done anything to suggest they’ll be benched. Again, it’s one to monitor.

Aaronson is intriguing. You’d like to think he starts considering the money spent. If Harrison is 5.5 (according to LiveFPL, which I doubt immensely) he’d be the one to chose.

The glaring omission is Trent, but with Robbo it’s cushioned. I’d be slightly concerned I don’t have both Trent or Salah, but that’s because I’m taking a more cautious approach. Genuinely though, I do think they are the best assets. Diaz will be good on the eye but I’m not convinced he’s explosive just yet. Nunez might rotate with him too so probs gets 60-65 mins. I can’t see both Jota and Firmino benched and Nunez up top.

Agree with all your points, but re. any Leicester defender, I'd need to be convinced they've fixed that horrendous set piece weakness. 3 or 4 games should be enough to convince me one way or the other.

Agree about Fofana, I can't remember who posted it on Twitter but I saw a list of Leicester's xGc over the past 4 or 5 seasons and last season was a big outlier in how high it was, and their defensive injuries certainly were a big part of that, and Fofana settled into the side and league so quickly. Another thing about him is that despite what looks like a bit of a wiry frame and him not exactly being the tallest CB, he's excellent in the air and I'd expect him to pick up a few goals over the course of a full season.

    Thought for the day.

City used to prioritise goal scoring players in the wide positions Sterling, Foden, Jesus and Mahrez all have more goals than assists.

This is obviously to spread the goals as they played without a striker.

Now Haland has come in we might see a bit of a change. Wide players have more of a responsibility to provide for the big man. And also more incentive to play that way, you don't fling crosses in if you know nobody will be there...

With Sterling and Jesus on the way out, one man who could see increased playing time and benefit from the slight tactical tweaks is Grealish.

    - He's always been more of an assister than goalscorer.
    - Settled in for 1 year now.
    - Time to get his head down to try and force his way into the England WC XI.
    - Should be able to play on either wing.
    - Pep always has a plan and is fairly stubborn, he won't want to have spent so much on Grealish for him to flop.

Predicted to be priced at £7.5m he could be a steal, but of course, it's a bit of a risk.

Haven't drafted yet or even looked at fixtures to see if I fancy the gamble, it's just a passing thought as I walk the dog.

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

He'll still be sharing a position with Foden. What I think is more likely is that Foden will be regularly subbed off for Grealish. He might get only half an hour, but against tired defences he could be lethal and score highly in terms of points-per-minutes.

      1. TheTinman

So he's kind of in that Jota bracket then. Perhaps one to watch if another player gets injured etc.

Great thought - and a very well formatted comment whilst walking the dog!

My City spots are currently occupied by Cancelo, Dias & Haaland, but I do like the theory above.

      1. TheTinman

Double City defence could be amazing. But also quite scary.

Can just foresee 2 clean sheets out of 3 and the one of the clean sheets Dias is rotated for Stones.

You never know with Pep though, he might just suddenly nail a defender into the team.

I also think a few points of the above apply to Cancelo too, we might see more attacking end product from him this year with a proper target man in the box.

I won’t go too much into it, partly because I can’t be bothered, but the Haaland situation doesn’t seem too dissimilar to Aguero. Analysing how they played with Aguero will be the key. Although, Haaland is more likely to run in behind.

    4. CONNERS
      • 5 Years

He could be worth a punt, especially with the 5 subs change meaning he'll get more game time regardless.

With Haaland's arrival, it's also possible Pep could also switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation which would also favour Grealish's playing time over City's usual 4-3-3 setup.

    5. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

He's one player I've said since the end of last season I think will do well and quieten the critics this time around. He looked a lot more like the Grealish at Villa in the final few weeks (taking on players, driving into the box) and he said this himself after the final day. The jump up from fighting relegation with Villa not long ago to being among CL favourites at City is big and he had to adapt to playing in a unique system. Now he'll be playing alongside a recognised CF which should help him too in terms of having someone to supply, but also someone to play off. I don't want to triple-up on City and he's a big risk but with it looking like Sterling and Jesus are both going I'm tempted to put my money where my mouth is and go for him. I'll see once the game opens up.

Think I have to agree with the theory they're waiting for the Mane move to go through as it'll impact prices of Jota/Diaz/Nunez. No other reason they wouldn't have even started prices by now.

Mane leaving has been set in stone for some time. I don't think it's a factor - after all there will be plenty of transfer comings and goings over the next few weeks.
I'm not sure there is any delay, but if there is it could be due to programming significant changes to the rules or new chips or suchlike.

      1. TheTinman

I think the most likely scenario is they're just late because they're late. It happens.

Or they've decided to release slightly later this year and are on time.

Don't think a player sale has that much to do with it. After all, the prices are the same for everyone and people will probably have 3 Liverpool players regardless

I expect a big update to remove last season's data before they start releasing prices, and they don't have to wait till they've finalised the prices before they do that update.
I also don't expect them to start revealing prices till two or three days before the launch, as to do so any earlier would give them less scope for making any late adjustments based on players changing clubs.
But I'm very surprised that the big update hasn't even started yet.

Some sums that may be of interest. Using LiveFPL pricing, if we take the top 6 players from each position classification and divide their scores by the prices individually, then take the average across the 6 players we can see in principle where the best value lies.

    GK Average 27.1
    DEF Average 26.4
    MID Average 21.4
    ST Average 16.3

This would seems to suggest opting for the 5-4-1 is optimal. Interestingly going off just the top 6’s, the 3 players who provide the most value per price are Sa, Alison and VVD jointly. In fact, every single goalkeeper and defender out scores the mids and forwards considerably on points per cost.

    Food for thought.

It's probable that last season was an outlier re. forwards. This season we'll have Haaland, Kane in a good mood for the whole season and probably Jesus playing regular football. We won't be stunk out by Aubamayang, Lacazette and Lukaku.

Yeah, my point is last year we only had 2 highly-scoring strikers - Kane (who was in a sulk for half of it) and Ronaldo in a dysfunctional side. I expect multiple high-scoring forwards for good teams this time, so the assumption that 5-4-1 or 4-5-1 is the way to go might not be cast-iron.

I can't see forwards making more points than Defenders, Midfielders, not with 3 for an assists and 5/6 points for a goal for those.

Forwards too overpriced and only 4 for a goal. Loading heavily in Def/Mid this year, cheap but effective strikers. Maybe one good one for me.

        But I am excited already.

    Sanchez (Steele)
    Trent VVD Rob Cancelo Dias
    Kulu Odegard Mount Guimaraes (Eriksen)
    Haaland (Welbeck Gelhardt)

The only issue is see is if Haaland doesn't start well and is Grealished somewhat you will need to take 2 hits to move to Salah.

The Liverpool defensive triple up is very restrictive seeing as you are relying on Haaland, who at this point is unknown in the Premier League. Not saying he will be bad, I assume he will score for fun. We just can't say that with confidence.

I don't mind this draft but if I were you I would start with kane over haaland as I think saints home is a fist pump fixture and it allows you to see one game how haaland beds in. Then if he looks good jump to him cap home to bou and if not will then nothing wrong with sticking with kane and maybe capping cancelo gw2. Or doing Jesus in maybe or something like that as a differential cap. I also think the nature of your deep squad allows for planning for this luxury transfer.

  10. FPL Value - part two
    FPLGOOD

There have been many good points here lately about how the best value is in defence and midfiled - or even in the goalkeeper position.

However one thing that has been overlooked (or just missed by me!) is that you should be comparing - not to the points per million directly - but to how much you can gain from the money you spend.

To put this to context we must define what is a standard minimum what we can pretty easily expect for each position. Meaning minimum expected points per minimum money spend.

I have defined the following values for example (you could do your own if you like, this is just for an example!). I simply looked at some random points per match stats from Official FPL.

GK: 3.5 points per 4.5 million
DEF: 3.5 points per 4.5 million
MID: 2.5 points per 4.5 million
FOR: 3.0 points per 6.0 million

Only after this we should start looking where it is best to invest the money in.

In my own thinking I have set the basics that for every million I spent I should get one point in return. The logic for this "1point per 1 million" rule comes from the fact that it seems pretty doable to figure out some 5.5m defenders who average 4.5points per game. (And it's also just a very simple rule to play around with...)

From here we can already take something interesting out:

    - 6.0m Goalkeeper should average 5 points
    - 7.5m Defender should average 6.5 points
    - 8.5m Midfielder should average 6.5 points
    - 8.5m Forward should average 5.5 points*

    * With forwards I would like to point out that this actually is real only with the first forward you choose since only one forward is mandatory. So for the second or third forward you should calculate them similarly than mids in my opinion.

Looking at last season the real gems based on this "model" were:

    ~ 6.0m Defenders averaging around 5.5 points
    ~ 6.5m Midfielders averaging around 5.5 points

For me the most interesting thing is that by looking at the game like this you can find value almost from anywhere:

    - 4.5 Defender averaging 4.0 points
    - 4.5 Midfielder averaging 3.0 points
    - 5.0 Forward averaging 2.5 points

And you could easily play them too! If you just manage to spend your money wisely on other departments (which may turn out to be extremely difficult to be fair...).

Additionally on the other side of showing where the value is, we can also look at where the value is not.

Most controversial argument is probably that for 8m Trent Alexander-Arnold would not be good value unless he achieves new hights to around 7 points per match. Instead the likes of Robertson (7.5m, 6.5p), Chilwell (6.0m, 5.5p) or even Tierney (5.5m, 5.0p) would make more sense.

Probably more approved statement would be that it is highly unlikely to find any above 8.0m player with good value using this "model" unless you are going to consistently captain them.

It's getting quite a long post but I would still like to point out a few things.

Firstly, no "value for money" is good if the money is either on the bench or in the bank. It is not possible to find perfect value for every position so you must be flexible.

Secondly, you can easily lose any advantage you achieve from this model by implementing it too aggressively. So in short: by taking too many hits...

Thirdly, you must consider the basic game rules of course. For me this means mostly:

    - Subs do matter (have at least a weak bench..)
    - You must have an attacker (even a spare one would be nice..)
    - Captaincy do definitely matter!
    - You actually should spent the whole 100 millions most of the time... (oh I'm getting boring, please excuse me!)

And finally, fixtures do matter a lot and you can still find even those non-captain 9m forwards for short sprints (now I'm done!).

Hope you found this interesting, useful and nice to read. Let me know what you think 🙂

Have a good day all and good luck to your campaign!

I like the way you think, but not, perhaps, your thresholds.

The basline prices should be the lowest price for a viable players at that position (that is, players that will actually play).

For keepers and defenders, this is probably 4.5, but for mids and forwards, this is probably 5 and 6 respectively. Then you will have the odd outlier (like that kid from Norwich who was 4.5 a couple of seasons ago).

        Thanks for your comment!

I actually think you are correct and in fact I had baseline for forward at 6.0million (averaging 3.0 points).

And actually looking at it now for midfielder it doesn't have an effect here if the baseline is 4.5m (2.5p) or 5.0m (3.0p) which in my opinion are both still pretty standard expectations for points per million.

Wonder how consistency of points has an effect on this, for example someone who meets your benchmarks every game may be good to build up your starting 5 or so who are season keepers. However for captaincy would be much more targeted and high spenders are likely to be changed around. In case of captaincy all talks of averages etc. become more mute

I went deep down this rabbit hole a few years back and the conclusion I came to was that I was massively overthinking it. Doing huge amounts of analysis for very little gain.

Precision makes no sense in a chaotic landscape, like zooming in on a blurred image. Sometimes you need to zoom out to see it for what it is.

You just need to pick the combination of players that nets you the most points.

A lot of these picks are obvious, so that massively simplifies, then you can weigh up different combinations for the other minor slots. Robbo & Martinelli vs Chilwell & Saka etc...

I like to produce xPts values for players, fueled by data, but feel it's important to stop there. I just use it as a rough tool, rather than a specific measurement.

Yeah certainly agree that a lot of time can be spent on this 🙂 But for me it's big part of the fun-factor on this game.

But like you said in the end it often comes down to just picking the best combination of player, team, fixture, form - and lot of luck!

Yeah I love it, too much really. It's better to diversify and have different hobbies so you're not too invested in one thing. Your mood is more consistent.

Analysing how many points each player is roughly worth is a useful exercise though. It can help you weigh up going 4/5 expensive defenders at the back or investing more in attack.

It served me well last season when I went big at the back, even playing with 5 at times. Robbo, Chilwell and James were raking in points while others were mucking about with the likes of Mbuemo and Toney instead. Glorious gains.

Sounds good moves for you last year!

Definitely also agree with its good to diversify. Interestingly for me fpl have become mostly an off-season hoppy - this is the time when I like to tinker the most. During the season I get long spells when I'm not too bothered. Actually this reminds me of some gamblers who loves to think about bets but dont really bother to follow how it went.

Trying to maximise points may seem obvious, but so many people get hung up on irrelevant things like formations, price points and EO.

They pick a suboptimal set of players because it fits the rigid rules they've created for themselves.

i.e. "I must cover that defence"
"352 is always the best formation"
"I can't have two players from the same defence"
"I must get that high EO player"
          "4.5/4.0 keepers is always optimal"
"Value is in defence, and points are in midfield"

Being single-minded on maximising points can result in some eyebrow-raising teams with wacky formations that break the meta.

Ahhh, the annual off season value debate, as always, value does not mean the most points and ultimately the most points is what we need to win the game.

Bella-Kotchap was an above-average player for VfL Bochum last season, but he is an enigma at the same time. Definitely talented as a tough-tackling central defender, he is prone to nerves and to giving the ball away with over-ambitious passes in situations that have led to goals.

He's still only 20, however, and consistency in decision-making is something that comes with time. Could be a good signing for Southampton, especially if the price is only €11 million, but Bella-Kotchap will probably need a little while to settle and develop in the Premier League.

Thanks for the info. Sounds a bit similar to the Salisu signing then, a raw talent that will likely need some time but one where you can see why he was bought. Salisu had some very good periods and very bad periods last season but has the makings of a good player. They definitely need numbers in that area, had to rely on the likes of Stephens and Salisu too much last season.

I'd say VVD at 6.5 is the sweet spot. Matip will naturally get a bump but his performances (alongside Robbo and TAA) meant that VVD's scope for bps was significantly lowered, and his attacking returns are sporadic enough that I wouldn't go near him at 7m. (That being said, I do think Konate will eat into Matip's time this season so I'm not too sure on going with him either.)

It’s not a bad shout as Liverpool could get 5-6 CS in first 7 games as they are that good

Alisson averaged 4.9 per game compared to 4 for say Raya (priced at possibly 4.5).
That would be an extra 34 points across the season for Alisson.

The question is can you get more than 34 points by investing that 1.5 mil upgrading another position?

There is an argument to start with Alisson to get the points for these early fixtures then downgrade when 1st wildcard is used to the go to cheaper option?

I'm contemplating this myself now that you put it that way. Raya certainly has decent fixtures but I do wonder how Brentford will cope in their second season, especially if Eriksen isn't going to rejoin (although it sounds like there's a better chance of that happening now than a few weeks ago). But 1.5 is a fair amount and with so many tempting premiums this season it's looking like every saving you can make will be significant, not to mention booking in transfers is often a foolish move, especially for a position like GK.

I'm guessing 6.5. I know he's close to the other 2, but the potential for attacking returns is still so much higher with the full-backs. And I imagine FPL will put them both ridiculously high, not because of their potential necessarily, but more cos otherwise EVERYONE will own them
