For students of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) statistics, the recent price reveals have enabled them to delve deep into finding new ways to perfect their Gameweek 1 squads.

Here, we will combine two popular stats into one number.

Points-per-gameA player’s total FPL points are divided by their number of appearances.
ValueA player’s total FPL points are divided by price. In this case, starting prices.

This should help optimise the £100m budget beyond premium assets like Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Son Heung-min (£12.0m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Erling Haaland (£11.5m) and Harry Kane (£11.5m).

Although a golden piece of FPL wisdom usually advises managers to look forward, rather than chase past points, let’s try to determine which 2022/23 players offer the best value based on their 2021/22 performances.

Last season’s PPG Value

Using last season‘s starting prices and the data from our Premium Members Area, these are the players with the best points-per-game-per-million (PPGP£m) scores in 2021/22:

For example, Joel Matip (£6.0m) took part in 31 matches and totalled 170 points – a rate of 5.484 per game. Divide this by his £5.0m starting price and he’s the only player to exceed 1.00 for PPG Value. It’s no surprise to see Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) right at the top too, whilst Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t held back by a £7.5m price.

On the left are those who played over 1,800 league minutes. By raising this to 2,052 minutes (60% of the possible 3,420), the likes of Reece James (£6.0m) and Kieran Tierney (£5.0m) are removed, as seen on the right.

This is unlucky on Ben Chilwell (£6.0m), who would likely take Marcos Alonso‘s (£5.5m) place on the list had he not suffered a serious injury. Until then, his six outings brought in three goals, three clean sheets and a whopping 54 points.

We can already see defensive domination, with three £4.5m goalkeepers sitting inside the top eight. Meanwhile, Jarrod Bowen (£8.5m) and Emmanuel Dennis (£5.0m) are the only attackers to reach the upper section.

Changes for 2022/23

This only intensifies now that the upcoming season’s prices have been released. Bargain attackers from last year such as Bowen, James Maddison (£8.0m) and Bukayo Saka (£8.0m) have had a steep increase in outlay, with Diogo Jota (£9.0m) and Kai Havertz (£8.0m) amongst those to now be categorised as forwards rather than midfielders.

Furthermore, many of last year’s players have been lost to relegation or transfers abroad, affecting the likes of Dennis, Antonio Rudiger and Sadio Mane.

Another mitigating factor is that Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Richarlison (£8.5m) have switched Premier League clubs over the summer. Whereas Jesus has left a squad role at Manchester City to likely become the focal point at Arsenal, the reverse is probably happening to Richarlison. For them, the last campaign’s points-per-game data is therefore irrelevant.

This season’s PPG Value

Now we take a look at PPMG£m using this year’s prices.

Matip’s numbers were so strong that the subsequent £1m rise hasn’t knocked him down, although it’s a surprise to see Tierney so high. His 22 starts brought 11 clean sheets and four attacking returns but he was overshadowed by much-owned teammate Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m).

Once those under 60% playing time are removed, it leaves a trio of Liverpool names on top. A big talking point of price reveals was the drop of goalkeeper Alisson from £6.0m to £5.5m, who now offers a genuine budget-saving supplement to Alexander-Arnold or Robertson.

A handful of these leading names are likely to remain avoided. Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) couldn’t reach 2,052 minutes and that’s before Ivan Perisic (£5.5m) arrived, whilst Marcos Alonso (£5.5m) continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona.

Also, in goal, both Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) have competition from new signings Nick Pope (£5.0m) and Sam Johnstone (£4.5m).

Of course, saying that there is more value in defence isn’t news to anyone. So let’s specifically look at midfielders and forwards.

Midfielders and Forwards

Up front, it was a bad season in FPL and the numbers back this. The two best-value forwards – Dennis and Armando Broja – were only there because of a £5.0m starting price, with one departing via relegation and the other returning to parent club Chelsea. Second-best midfielder Conor Gallagher (£6.0m) is also back in west London.

Said Benrahma remains at £6.0m. Although two goals and two assists in the first pair of games quickly saw him gain popularity, it just as swiftly died out. What may have been ignored is that – while colleague Bowen developed into a must-have asset – Benrahma did continue to be fairly productive despite managed minutes.

From Gameweek 19, the Algerian international registered five goals and three assists from 11 starts.

Elsewhere, the tough early fixtures awaiting James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) means that FPL managers may instead focus on Mason Mount (£8.0m), James Maddison (£8.0m) and one of Brentford’s forwards.

Points per million per game is, of course, a basic route into FPL team value.

We can’t just create a team of FPL assets based on ‘PPGP£M’ as we’ll inevitably end up with a huge wad of unused cash in the bank, due to the fact that Salah, Kane et al will struggle to feature in the above tables. Value Over Replacement Player (VORP) takes this to the next level and is something that has been written about at length by our clued-up community over the years.

But it’s a decent starting point for making a rudimentary comparison of, say, two players of the same position and price: Robertson and Cancelo, for example.

Not having one of Kane and Haaland makes the team really inflexible if they start scoring you'll struggle to afford them without tearing up the team. Especially if Jesus and Salah do well as you wouldn't want to swap them out.

Can anyone explain why people are considering United assets?

They beat a massively depleted Liverpool side which consisted of kids and some senior players who only arrived back to training the day before. And then defeated the mighty Melbourne football team. Call me stupid but it looks a transfer waiting to happen for your team. And the fixtures aren't great. What's not to love?

new manager, new tactics. People are assuming the team will have a new found motivation. However, Brighton at home is not going to be easy first game.

Also, these players have a track record of giving up so if things don't start well it could be a disaster

For me, it is the cheap pricing of Elanga and Rashford. Man Utd are underperforming, but they are still better than most of the teams in the PL.

Not interested in their defence, particularly while they keep pushing this high defensive line.

    6. Paqueta Rice
      • 5 Years

They had them or worst season in years and finished 6th. If you consider them as a mid table team, their assets are now priced similarly to other teams that people are considering players from. Some of their assets are cheaper than Bowen, Zaha, Maddison etc. so if United can find some form under the new management it would be silly to not consider them would it not? Rashford, Sancho, Eriksen, Martial are all priced very nicely for a team that should finish top 6 again and obviously have the talent and potential to do well if they can rediscover some form.

Because they’re cheap as chips and new manager bounce potential - think Ole won something like 15 or his first 19 games with the same team Mourinho bored us all with.

I need more data from pre-season, but can see the appeal over same priced Newc / Ars assets.

Maybe, but in 10 years of FPL my bench boost planning has never really pulled off any amazing hauls, with essentially an extra wildcard this season, could be a chance to play a little more aggressive and just get it out of the way. As Christina mentioned on another post planning for later on can leave you with unwanted players on your bench etc

Has the zinchenko to Arsenal move been discussed?

5.0 and could easily get minutes with Tierney's record.

Also do we think he'd impact martinellis minutes as he also plays left-mid?

He can/will play either LWB (Tierney) or deep midfield (Elneny/Xhaka) behind Martinelli. I'd say he could combine well with Marts and makes him an even better asset.

Not sure about Tomi but Tierney:
      Pro’s:
*can get a lot of attacking returns
      *Gunners good early draw
      *could play LWB
*Points per average per dollar is the best in the league
      Con’s:
      *injury prone
*will probably play LCB if Zincenko signs, thus drastically lowering his attacking returns
      * $0.5 more expensive than White and Tomi

Not an Arsenal fan but I had Tierney last season in his good run before he dropped off and eventually got injured. One difference I did notice between the better period and worse period was Martinelli coming into the side (when ESR got injured/had covid), he seems to ignore a lot of Tierney's overlaps and him playing more wide than someone like ESR means he's generally the one that has the ball at the byline more than Tierney

Agreed. Kane for me. I read on here that Kane had a terrible first half of the season as he was sulking about the collapse of his move to city. The second half of the season he was the second highest scorer in the game. Assuming he’s settled (I think he is) I think he’ll go well. Sadly his goal scoring record against saints is pretty good, so I think he’ll start well. I also think there are better budget options in midfield than than there is up front and son is 0.5 dearer. Both great options but Kane edges it for me.

Yesterday I drafted Son over Haaland. Quite like it. Going to wait on it for a bit.

I’ve just tried that and also like it - in my team a choice between Son and Wilson vs Haaland and Mount. Is it crazy to have a front line without funds for either Kane or Haaland?

Could be, but we do have the wildcard to fallback on and everyone’s going to have to use it (relatively) early anyway

Good point! And of course there’s no guarantee that Haaland tears it up from GW1 anyway. I just feel that finding room for a Spurs attacker while retaining Salah could pay off

      A. Salah

      C. Haaland

FYI I'm leaning to starting with Salah and Haaland for the first two game weeks then bringing in Kane or Son game week 3 for one of them if needed. By then we'll know if Salah is continuing his crap form or if Haaland is going to flop/get rotated.

Not a popular approach on here but I might stick to my 4 premium players team and plan the early WC. Yes I know, the defence is lacking but potential value increases in some of those budget players.

      Raya/4.5
      Mings, Tomiyasu, Ait Nouri, Williams
      Salah, Son, Bailey
      Kane, Haaland, Jesus

      4m, DaSilva, Patterson, Andreas

If I downgrade Jesus it will be for Martial or Wilson not fodder. As I said I hope the premium defences concede early doors as cs are hard to come by at the start of the season and that I can get a small gain and wildcard them in then. Here’s hoping !

Main worry is the light bench considering Covid rates are so high at present. I’m planning to start with a stronger bench and then go cheaper on my WC

2/3 bench players should be starters here though. If Coleman is injured to begin with Patterson should play also. No right or wrong way I guess!

Cash and Digne were on a right wind up, one would have a few weeks of looking really attacking and forward at all times and if you got them he'd immediately stop and the opposite guy would be furthest forward and attacking

Will be great for Arsenal and should help keep more clean sheets. I don't see him bagging many offensive points, but might make the likes of Martinelli and Jesus even more appealing.

First draft, gone for the threemium approach, critiques welcome:

            Raya - 4.0
            TAA - Cancelo - James - Tomiyasu - Malacia
            Salah - Rashford - Martinelli - 4.5 - 4.5
            Kane - Haaland - 4.5

            Thoughts?

Very similar to mine, malacia feels a bit punty. Question for me would be is having 6x 4.5m players (and 4m sub keeper) a weakness?

I think it matters less with the games current pricing, we've rarely had nailed 4.5s from the top teams, yet this year there are many to pick from!

Agree on Malacia being punty but can swap for another 4.5 if needs be, one of the Brighton lads possibly? I think they've signed him with intent though, and full backs have always been a weak position for Utd so I think he'll play a lot personally.

                What's different about your team?

Kane looking red hot like all Conte number 9s. Is threenium the way to go or are we really ditching Salah? Leaning towards the latter given you only get one captain

I've been on Salah, Kane and Haaland for about a week now and don't feel like changing. Normally I'd be against it, but I feel like it's Kane or Son or nothing (for now at least) if you want a Spurs attacker, and knowing we have to WC early means that I think it's worth the risk. All 3 sides have solid early fixture runs so it's hard to argue against it if you feel comfortable with the rest of your side
