Everton pick up another win thanks to a Ross Barkley goal at Dundee United. A Matt Etherington penalty is enough for Stoke to see off Sion, while both West Brom and Sunderland suffer narrow losses after spurning plenty of chances to find the net:

Seongnam 1 Sunderland 0
Martin O’Neill’s side slipped to defeat in their opening match of the Peace Cup. The Black Cats’ opponents are already midway through their domestic campaign and their superior fitness told in the end, though Sunderland can consider themselves somewhat unlucky after hitting the woodwork three times. O’Neill started with Titus Bramble and Michael Turner at centre-half, with Wes Brown at right-back, though the club’s official website singled out debut boy Carlos Cuellar (who looks a strong cut-option at 4.5 in FPL and 4.8 in the Sky Sports game) as their most impressive defender, after the former Villa man was handed his chance just after the hour mark. Fraizer Campbell and Connor Wickham led the line in a 4-4-2; the latter was handed 90 minutes and hit the post – as did Kieran Richardson – while a Craig Gardner free-kick rattled the bar. Despite their attacking endeavours, though, the Black Cats couldn’t find the net and sank to a somewhat undeserved defeat.

Sunderland Starting XI: Mignolet, Wes Brown (Blair Adams 72), Titus Bramble (Carlos Cuellar 61), Michael Turner, Jack Colback, David Meyler, Lee Cattermole (C), Craig Gardner, Kieran Richardson (Roarie Deacon 72), Fraizer Campbell (Ryan Noble 79), Connor Wickham.

Dundee United 0 Everton 1
David Moyes fielded a strong looking first XI for the trip to Dundee United as the Toffees scraped a narrow win in a rather uninspiring match. First-team regulars such as Tim Howard, Sylvain Distin, Phil Neville and Leon Osman all started from the off, while Jack Rodwell made his second successive appearance before making way for Marouane Fellaini at the break. Leon Osman impressed again after a strong display at the weekend against Morecambe, while Seamus Coleman’s right-flank raids tormented the Tangerines time and again – indeed, the latter had a hand in the game’s only goal, teeing up sub Ross Barkley to notch a late, late winner as Moyes’ men made it two pre-season wins out of two so far.

Everton Starting XI: Howard; Hibbert, Neville, Distin, Duffy; Coleman, Rodwell (Fellaini 46), Junior (Barkley 54), Osman; Anichebe(Garbutt) McAleny (Vellios).

Sion 0 Stoke 1
The Potters racked up a narrow win in the Swiss village of Saxon in front of just 200 fans last night. Tony Pulis gave Asmir Begovic and Thomas Sorenson 45 minutes apiece between the sticks, while Ryan Shotton got the nod ahead of Andy Wilkinson in the right-back slot in a match that saw as many as 20 players given game time. With Jonathan Walters still unavailable after his Euro 2012 duties, Kenwyne Jones partnered Peter Crouch, though it was Cameron Jerome – on as a second-half sub for the latter – who was the visitors most threatening attacking player, according to the reports. Left-back Marc Wilson came close to netting early on, while Matt Etherington sealed an impressive individual display by slotting home the winner from the spot late on in the first half.

Stoke Starting XI: Begovic (Sorensen 46); Shotton (Wilkinson 50), Upson (Collins 50), Shawcross (Huth 50), Wilson (Higginbotham 50); Delap, Whitehead (Arismendi (57), Palacios (Tonge 57); Etherington (Pennant 46), Crouch (Jerome 57), Jones.

Malmo 1 West Brom 0
The Baggies fell to defeat in Steve Clarke’s first match in charge but the result was something of an injustice, with the visitors in the ascendancy for the vast majority of the match. With the club’s Euro 2012 competitors still unavailable, Clarke opted for a mixture of youth and experience and, rolling out a 4-4-2 formation, handed Marc-Antoine Fortune a starting role alongside Peter Odemwingie up front. After his side went behind in eight minutes, the Nigerian – who was also on free-kicks – had plenty of chances to equalise before being replaced by debutant Yassine El Ghanassy midway through the second-half, while Graham Dorrans was a major attacking threat for the Baggies in a central midfield role. Liam Ridgewell also came close to scoring from a Dorrans corner after coming on as a sub at half-time but Clarke’s men paid for their profligacy as their Swedish hosts held out for the win.

West Brom Starting XI: Myhill; Jones, Tamas, McAuley, (Reid 63), Hurst; Jara (Ridgewell 46), Mulumbu (Mantom 63), Dorrans (Mantom 70), Roofe (Morrison 46); Fortune (Berahino 63), Odemwingie (El Ghanassy 70).

RVP to United would surely impact on Kagawa's attractiveness. He's being touted as the player 'in the hole' behind Rooney. They'll both have to drop deeper with RVP to accommodate.

The more I change my team the more FFS Generic it becomes.
I plan to play it safe and stick with this type of team and make the changes depending on form later on.
What is worrying me is that currently I will have 5 double gameweek players.
That tactic is risky because at least two transfers will have to be made for gw2-gw3. Injuries may wreck the plan or Alex Ferguson may decide to bench De Gea.

An option for you both is to consider Cech as one of your 3 Chelsea players with say Jaaskelainen as your other keeper, then you only need to worry about the outfield players, when like you say as it's Week 3 you 'should' have two free transfers, injuries permitting.

I am having serious doubts about the need for an expensive mid. All of them have real issues that make me wary.

Silva - Does he produce good enough returns (double figures) to justify a £10 million outlay, Aguero may cost more, but he offers greater rewards

Dempsey - If he stays at Fulham he's worth investing in, but he's highly unlikely to stay at Fulham

Mata - Not gonna play for 2-3 weeks, otherwise he'd be a great option

Hazard - We don't yet know how he'll adapt to the PL

Bale - Seems like a safe bet, but you never know what a new manager will bring.

Nani - Capable of explosive returns, but equally likely to deliver 2-3 points, and under threat of rotation.

Siigy/VdV - Fighting for the same position

Valencia - Perhaps the best option, likely to be nailed on and has begun to score and assist on a regular basis, but do we want to double on United attack?

Thoughts people, worth going heavy on strikers instead and going budget in midfield?

I'm going for at least one for GW1 (probably Hazard/Bale) - or at least leaving some cash in the bank. Any of those could easily hit form, and I'd want the option to get them in without a hit.

i think 2 heavy mids is about right, (with 2 heavy forwards). Personally i have gone for valencia and vdv, i reckon by the time the friendlies have finished we will have a good idea of whether it is siggy or vdv playing behind the forward

Clearly VDV will be playing and at a reduced 9.0m is better than Sigurdsson.

Anyone any news on Lampard's injury. Is he ready for the start of the season. A double gameweek early on is worthy at 9.0 especially with Mata at the Olympics and Drogba no longer around. He must be back on penalties, no?

Lampard, VDV, Nani all at 9.0 look great value to me. Leave Silva out and put in Aguero upfront with Torres and away you go firing from the start.

I currently have Hazard as my nly expensive mid (not including Sess, who I'm not sure about.

My plan is to punt on Hazard for the DGW, and use the Tot/New game to see who's the best bet to change him to out of Bale/Siggy/VDV/HBA/Cabaye.

Simple, pick 2 of Dempsey, Valencia and Bale. Those 3 should start, should do well and are well-priced considering their points last season.

I think Hazard->Valencia is the obvious play from GW2 onwards with Chelsea having so many midfielders to pick from. If you think about the way Valencia was playing last season (and then how he got #7, cleaned up Players player of the year etc.) and how high his fantasy ownership was by the end it's sick how he's actually cheaper than an unknown to the league.

Lots of Hazard love on here. Am I in the minority thinking he's a big risk? Has yet to perform in Europe or at national level really. Not even a nailed on starter for Belgium. We all know how difficult it can be to adapt to the prem and at 9.5 he's not cheap.

With the DGW, he could be a genius move. . . but could also be a colossal waste of 9.5mil when there are other proven players available.

I'm tempted myself but just think he might be too big a risk. Although. for the first week there's no harm, he's gonna start both games and can be transferred out for GW2 if he's poor.

Agree with this, I don't think he's a big risk but there's too many strong options for the payoff to be worth it. Especially when you see people like Lampard has less than 5% ownership for 0.5 cheaper.

Apart from getting the FF fix - I dont think there is any real point of choosing your team until about a week to start due to transfers and injuries and that.

If the rest of your team are safe picks, you will have 2ft, so you can sub out 2 of the 4 before GW3, so you will still have a free spot on your bench for someone.

I'm tempted to have A.Cole, Ivanovic, Hazard, Guthrie and Federici.

Ok more tweaking two drafts think I'm there for GW1...

    Begovic/Sorenson

    Cole Tomkins Fabio (McCartney Fonte)

    Siggy Valencia Hazard(c) Noble (Allen)

    Rooney Aguero(vc) Poggy

    2mill spare

    BUT,

If Pienaar moves to Everton, may go with Pienaar in for Hazard, and Torres for Poggy?

    Begovic/Sorenson

    Cole Tomkins Fabio (McCartney Fonte)

    Siggy Valencia Pienaar Noble (Allen)

    Rooney Aguero(vc) Torres(c)

Or even Torres for Rooney and have Hazard, then Rooney and Lescott in for GW3 with free transfer.

Yes liking the way that's shaping up. Just have to sit tight on Pienaar now.
