Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Arsenal and Aston Villa players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brentford.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

FPL pre-season lessons:

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4811th
Shots44213th
Shots in the box3177th
Shots on target147=11th
Big chances679th
Expected goals (xG)52.3911th

The attacking statistics for Brentford very much rank in mid-table, which isn’t bad for a newly-promoted side making their Premier League debut.

However, their year splits into life with and without Christian Eriksen (£6.5m). His Gameweek 28 debut followed a terrible run of nine defeats from 11 matches, totalling just four points and six goals in those months.

Until Gameweek 27, the Bees were down in 17th place for total shots and 15th for goals scored.

Eriksen’s arrival sparked a late-season revival of seven wins and 21 goals but, now that the Dane has departed for Manchester United, we don’t know how good Brentford will be in their second campaign.

Headline-making victories came against Arsenal on the opening Friday, plus a 4-1 win away to Chelsea. Also impressive was doing the double over West Ham United.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5612th
Clean sheets9=10th
Shots conceded50310th
Shots in the box conceded3058th
Shots on target conceded17913th
Big chances conceded69=10th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)55.148th

Again, Brentford’s numbers line up slightly better than their 13th-placed finish.

Most of their season was played with a back-three system, which might explain why they ranked eighth-best for conceding shots inside the penalty area. They were seventh-best at allowing attempts from the left flank but 13th for those down the right.

Three of their nine clean sheets arrived within the first five outings, catching FPL managers off-guard. Of course, those who then bought a defensive asset had to wait until Gameweeks 13 and 25 for the next pair.

From Brentford defenders, only Chelsea scored more than their 13 – which includes the three of reclassified Sergi Canos (£5.0m). Add this to defensive assists and they are the best outside of last season’s top four (25).

Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) lead the way for matches started, with 37, while Rico Henry (£4.5m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) follow with 33 and 32.

OPENING FIXTURES

The opening run of Brentford fixtures is very generous, avoiding all of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12.

In fact, starting from Gameweek 3, they top our Season Ticker all the way up to Gameweek 16.

Hi guys, my first RMT of the season. Any thoughts on this lot? Going for 1 premium and big in the middle, will captain Salah every week.

    Raya (4.0)
TAA Cancelo James Robbo (N Williams)
    Salah Mount Kulu Maddison Kulu
    Jesus (Greenwood) (Taylor)

He's not gonna get benched. If Injured it's an easy swap to Wilson or any other 7.5 forward

Seriously though, I'd want playing Forward as back up in case something happend to Jesus. If you downgrade one 8m mid that'd free the cash up for a forward

    Raya/4.0
    TAA/Robo/Cancelo/Cash/Trip
    Salah/Son/Martinelli/Bailey/Andreas
    Jesus/Toney/Greenwood

Can play it 541, 532, and even 442 (eg GW3 Trip V City)
Probably will Son ---> KDB week 2

    Thoughts?

Nah its good. I also had a hard time choosing a 4.5 GK. Longer-term I would prefer whoever the Palace keeper turns out to be, or maybe Henderson when their fixtures improve, but I've settled on Sanchez for now too.

    Morning all!

    @devs/mods some requests please:

1.) There are stats in some of the pre-set members' tables which are not available in our custom tables - these are the stats in the 'fantasy stats' category of the 'player stats' preset tables. It would be very helpful to have these added to the customisable tables.

2.) Fantasy points only seem to exist in the stats tables for the 2021-22 season. Please could these be added for previous seasons?

This info would make it much easier for us stat nerds who enjoy wasting our time doing historic data trend research.

    Many thanksX

Thanks Geoff! and thanks for the quick response. For more info, the 'fantasy stats' are

        'Blanks when starting'
        'Attacking returns'
        'Returns'
        'FPL bonus'
        'Double-digit hauls'

There may be more under that umbrella category

Fantasy points (category) seems to include:

        'Fantasy points'
        'Minutes per FPL point'
        'Points per start'

Again, there may be more. Cheers.

Hope so. It is a fantastic competition and a highlight of the season. Until you get knocked out. Then it’s rubbish and I dislike it intensely. I’m almost certain Shakespeare was thinking of LMS when he penned ‘the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune….’.

Sancho Vs Rashford gives me that weird FPL feeling that the better player won't be the one who will be scoring the most FPL point.

Sancho looks very sharp and in the middle of every movements. Though, he seems to be a bit deep and plays like the launching platform of movements whereas Rashford, even if he looks less lively, seems to have more FPL end product (tap-ins, counter-attacks) etc..

Agreed, that said if Ronaldo stays then almost every player becomes a non option as they all defer to him on the pitch

As the only team in the top 5 divisions of the top 5 leagues in Europe that haven’t yet turned him down, Union Berlin is our last chance of Ronaldo leaving and making at least one of them an option

I've been fixated on this 5-2-3 formation for a while, but is it sheer insanity?

      Zinchenko - Cancelo - Robertson - Chilwell - Dalot
      De Bruyne - Sancho
      Jesus - Darwin - Kane

      (Šarkić - Andreas - Colback - Elneny)

Obvs missing Salah, Trent, Son and Haaland is dangerous territory, but I love some of the differential options here. (A safer alternative could have Salah and a 6.5 Rashford/Martinelli type in the midfield spots.) Thoughts?

You have balls if you go with this team!

Looks good but a few insecure sports like Chilwell (Still has not played in pre season?) and double United. Both Maddison and Coutinho are good shouts for the Sancho spot.

A bit of London hokey-cokey with Spurs and Arsenal to nudge up a spot at the expense of Chelsea:

Only difference other than keeper is I have Mahrez, Rashford and Bailey where you have Dias, Sancho, Neto. Do you have money in the bank or on your bench?

That 0.5 difference is probably you having Neco on the bench and me having a second 4.5 mid on the bench

The pricing of Hammers assets is just a bit off-putting.

GK - better options at same price
DEF - Cresswell at 5m - better options
MID - only Bowen, 0.5 too much. Others rotatable
FWD - Scammaca and Antonio both 0.5 too much in my book.

To Salah or Not to Salah?

              For :
              - Best player in FPL for the last few years.
              - Safest captain option
              - Very high EO, so if your replacement (Son,KdB, Kane etc) do not do as well, the downside is huge.
              - Generally starts the season pretty strong

              Against :
              - You can probably fill 3 Liverpool slots with TAA, Robbo and Diaz, which are all better value.
The same can't be said for City/Tottenham who rely heavily on their premium assets( or in case of city, the mid priced players are not guaranteed starters so not FPL options)
              - High ownership and the fact that he costs 13m, people will captain him more often than not even in the difficult fixtures. Kane/Son/Haaland could outscore in specific gameweeks and the upside could be huge.

              - Kane/Haaland instead of Salah give you 1.5m extra, which could be the difference between Rashford and Saka/Kulu/8m mid.

Which side are you on and why?

Yes but the game also have budget constraints, if Son can match him which he almost did last season, why not save a million?
Son + Diaz +1mn definitely better than Salah + Kulu over some parts of the season atleast?

How come, Rashford feel more like a punt than those two which are likely going to be the main source of points for their respective teams? Coutinho clocked 5 goals 3 assists in 1300 mins which averages to 10G 6A in a season, seems v respectable for a 7M pick.

I’m on Plange. Only real considerations:

                1) would you ever want 3 players from the team he’s playing for
                2) Ownership - the higher it is, the more likely a price drop.

Agree. Greenwood is an avoid, but Archer will get a few minutes and not get a price drop.

CS dependant but unless something big happens with Haaland or a city mid I'm fairly settled.

              Ramsdale
              Trent, Robbo, Cancelo, Trip
              Salah, Grealish, Rash, Neto
              Kane, Jesus
              4, Andreas, Patterson, Greenwood

Feels like its a nice balance spread of funds and price points too.

Not afraid of going without any Spurs?

Depending on CS I might go Kane but he's ruined me so many times 🙁

Would prefer Sancho over Rash and spurs defender plus Kane over Haaland (if not just for week 1). If not Kane then Son.

Whats folks opinions. I just cant get away from not having KDB, he was unplayable end of last season and looked sharp in the Americas games. Can aways go Kane or KDB to Haaland if he goes mad. Is there a better 5.0m mid than Bailey?

                  Salah, KDB. Neto, Bailey
                  Jesus, Kane

                  Fodder bench

My opinion is that if he stays fit and continues to play like he did from the back end of last season then he will easily compete with Son and Salah

Salah as always, even in an "off" season for him, would have penalties which usually get him to the top of the points scorers
