Sir Alex Ferguson has today indicated that defender Chris Smalling will miss the start of the season having suffered a broken metatarsal. According to Ferguson, the former Fulham man will undergo surgery that is expected to keep him sidelined for ten weeks…

“He got an injury on the Wednesday and, straight away, we decided to have the operation so he’s out…It’s difficult to say with a metatarsal but it could be 10 weeks.”

The news follows confirmation that Jonny Evans is also likely to sit out the season openers with an ankle injury. Nemanja Vidic is another possible absentee for United’s kick-off, although Ferguson has been optimistic in his assessment of the Serb’s prognosis. Vidic is building up his fitness following a knee injury that has kept him out since December.

For Fantasy managers, this uncertainty could present the opportunity for short-term acquisitions within the United backline. Their centre-back pairing looks far from certain at this stage, while right-back is a slot that, once again, looks to be up for grabs. Both Rafael and Phil Jones could be set to start the season in Ferguson’s backline, then, presenting a cheaper route to early defensive returns. Rafael is available at 5.5 in the FPL, 6.6 in the Sky Sports Game – the cheapest of United’s defence. Jones, meanwhile, is also available for 6.0, with a 7.0 price in Sky Sports.

While keeper David De Gea’s name has been widely circulated as a likely candidate for our initial Fantasy lineups, due in the main to his 6.0 FPL price tag, these short term alternatives may now be more attractive as coverage options.

Despite De Gea’s outstanding form at the tail-end of last season, his starting role could well come under threat from Anders Lindegaard following his recovery from an ankle injury that saw him displaced as the Old Trafford number one by the Spaniard. Lindegaard is, however, likely to gain the opportunity to stake another claim for the keeper’s jersey in pre-season whilst De Gea is away on Olympic duty. Should Spain make the final on August 10, there’s every chance that Lindegaard will get the nod for the season opener.

That first trip to Goodison presents a stern test for the United rearguard, although the Everton clash is followed by an obliging set of early match-ups that has United face Fulham and Wigan at Old Trafford, with a visit to Southampton providing the filling in that sandwich. All three fixtures present clear potential for clean sheets with Fantasy managers looking to cash in with their initial lineup selections.

Today’s news on Smalling will now have us eagerly tracking the progress of Vidic and Evans, with one eye firmly on United’s pre-season team selections. Interestingly, Scott Wooton has so far started both of United’s pre-season matches in the centre of defence alongside Rio Ferdinand – he retains his place in today’s side that faced Ajax in Cape Town. Wooton is yet to arrive in either the FPL or Sky Sports games.

Given his price tag, it’s perhaps Rafael who currently looks the most intriguing option on offer. He could potentially cement his place if he can start the season and maintain form. The problem here is that he could himself be a doubt for the season opener: Rafael’s participation with Brazil in the Olympics is a concern and another situation that requires monitoring, adding to the increasing uncertainty in the United camp.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ah jeez - sorry about that. My bad. Reckon they're going to struggle this year if they don't sign anyone at the back.

          - I know Ninja Vidic's back but if he strings a few consecutive games this season, I'd be surprised.
          - Rio, Scholes & Evra are well past it and will struggle against Top 10 teams.
          - RBs who can't defend.
          - Leaves them relying (a bit too much) on Carrick & Evans again this season.

Looked at lots of RMT's and can't help notice that for forwards the majority are going with 2 big hitters and a £5m-ish player. Rooney/Aguero/Pog etc. Pretty new to FF but I thought most points come from spending big in midfield and not so much up front??

It's because forwards are involved in a much higher % of goals than midfielders are on average. This goes even more for the biggest forwards.

Not really, depends on the mids' performance imo. Last year Bale and Dempsey performed exceedingly well, so did Sigurdsson to an extent. That will not happen every year imo

In the days of Lamps, Gerrard and Ronaldo this was true, but so much now. There are probably no midfielders capable of a 20 goal season at the moment, especially if Clint moves. Also the EA PPI bonus system brought in last year is weighted towards goal scorers making forwards even more valuable.

United are playing a 4-4-1-1 with Kagawa “in principle” in the hole – but the guy is amazing. He drifts everywhere, his average position would be all over the opponent’s half. Drops deep to help out and also surges forward, often the furthest player forward. He is involved in everything.

      4-Scholes+CDM-Valencia+Kagawa+Nani-Rooney?

The thing is that if your passing is good enough you don't even need the presumably solid, physical CDM - see Barcelona, Busquets' job isn't to tackle but to form the passing link between defence and attack so that the ball is rarely lost, so that you rarely have to tackle. I got the impression Fergie has been trying to nudge the team in that direction - players like Cleverley and Anderson were displaying tiki-taka like tendencies at the start of last season. People might say it's lightweight, but a midfield three of Scholes-Cleverley and Kagawa might dominate games.

That is a good point. My thinking is that it's very difficult to emulate Barcelona and some teams might struggle trying to be that efficient at keep ball especially with the physical nature and pace of the PL.

Yep it does seem to take a decade plus of youth development to indoctrinate the possession philosophy. Don't know how many years Cleverley has had that but the team as a whole lacks it.

Tiote or Dembele for you then?

I think United can play that way the majority of games especially at OT but when it comes to playing a side like City who can play the ball about but also are a solid outfit who bullied United in both derbies they might need someone with a bit of dig to let guys like Yaya know they are in a battle.

    Best striker for 8.5?

    Apart from Graham

      No Frei then.

Worth noting I feel. Kacaniklic may be worth monitoring.

Hughes may be favoured ahead of Senderos perhaps...

        Yup.

Riether - Hughes - Hangeland - Riise might be the likely back 4.

That's definitely the impression I'm getting, so we can kiss goodbye to Kelly then?

Good to see 4.5 Hughes starting. Assumed he was first choice CB, this supports it. Never understood how Ruiz was used, he looks less like a striker than any striker I've seen. No Rodallega then?
