We bring the curtain down on the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action and look ahead to Gameweek 2 in The Digest.

Here, we discuss the impact of two new number nines – Darwin Nunez (£9.0m) and Erling Haaland (£11.6m) – and how the Norwegians haul has forced an early price drop for Harry Kane (£11.4m).

DARWIN NUNEZ

FPL pre-season: Nunez hits four

Just as he did against Manchester City in the Community Shield, Darwin Nunez made an instant impact upon his introduction at Craven Cottage.

The forward came off the bench to both score and assist for nine FPL points, and it now feels like a matter of time before he is installed in Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice XI.

And when starting regularly, FPL managers will be faced with a decision over which three Liverpool players to own.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) will most likely take up two spots for the majority, but which of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz (£8.0m) or Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) should join them?

While far from their best in Gameweek 1, Liverpool created plenty of chances. In fact, they produced four big chances to Fulham’s one, which arrived from the penalty spot.

Darwin was introduced after 51 minutes but managed to get on the end of three of those big chances, with Luis Diaz failing to register a single attempt on goal in that time. It’s also worth noting that the Uruguayan registered four shots against Man City in the Community Shield, despite only coming on after an hour.

There have been a lot of questions about how Klopp’s side might work this season with a traditional number nine, and the early signs are certainly encouraging for Darwin. However, further analysis is surely required before deciding on the best Liverpool three.

ERLING HAALAND AND MANCHESTER CITY

“We had the feeling that we could find him more… now we have him and when the defence is high with open space, these guys have to find him. When you have this open space and Kevin (De Bruyne), it’s difficult to stop him.” – Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland

As far as introductions go, it wasn’t a bad one, was it?

Erling Haaland’s two goals, maximum bonus and 13 FPL points, plus some truly explosive pace and movement in the final-third, was simply outstanding to watch.

The Norwegian had five shots over the course of his 78 minutes on the pitch – more than twice as many as any team-mate – and also ranked top for opposition box touches, with 10.

“There are few players you see that have absolutely everything. The physicality, the strength, the power, the finishing, the understanding, the timing – they are unique. You could play against a Zinedine Zidane or a Ronaldo (the Brazilian one) when we were playing and think, ‘There is nothing I can do here’. There will be defenders in the Premier League who won’t make mistakes and be helpless. He’s too strong, too quick. It’s almost an unfair competition. He is unplayable. He is a giant and is still young, so if he stays fit, the rest are in big trouble.” – Gary Neville on Erling Haaland

Elsewhere, City’s use of Kyle Walker (£5.0m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) was interesting, as they took up narrow midfield positions in Man City’s 2-3-5 build-up shape, which is captured on their respective touch heatmaps below.

Above: Kyle Walker (left) and Joao Cancelo’s (right) touch heatmaps v West Ham United in Gameweek 1

“I like to have a lot of players in the middle, it is like the kitchen in the apartment. We just want to create.” – Pep Guardiola

If a similar system is deployed again, it could be good news for City’s two number eights.

On Sunday, that was Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) and Ilkay Gundogan (£7.5m), both of whom were able to push up high and close to Haaland, knowing Walker and Cancelo were covering in behind alongside Rodri (£6.0m).

THE KANE TO HAALAND TRANSFER

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 24? 8

Going back to Haaland, there is clearly more to come from the big man, which is why his double-digit haul has already caused a transfer frenzy in FPL.

The Norwegian is the most-brought player ahead of Gameweek 2, having been snapped up by over 750,000 Fantasy managers at the time of writing.

As a result, Haaland now costs £11.6m.

However, the move has had a knock-on effect: Harry Kane has been sold by over 600,000, forcing a price drop in the early hours of Monday morning.

For those who made the move, it involved a £0.2m swing and is probably justified given their Gameweek 2 fixtures. Longer-term, however, it is perhaps still open for debate.

Yeah, but he blanked, so obviously he's now completely useless and needs to be sold immediately after just one GW.

It was frustrating as a Kane owner who missed the boat on the Haaland transfer. Tottenham looked good on Saturday, but Kane was dropping deep very often and wasn't in the box when the final ball came in. That's been his biggest Achilles Heel as an FPL asset for some time now. Poach 'arry. POACH!

Haaland is explosive, but Kane is still one of the best strikers on this planet and he's going to get plenty of goals and assists this season himself.

If you have him and can't swap him out without taking hits then be assured you are going to get hauls from him too.

I'm holding for now, that's what I have a playing bench for, but it's an expensive bench player for sure.

Jesus would still be my second FWD priority if WCing this week.

Haaland Jesus Darwin | Vardy Kane | Toney Bamford Mitrovic Wilson

If not WCing, I'd swap Vardy and Mitrovic around.

Selling Jesus, the most owned, best value player in the game (as perceived pre-GW1), after 1GW is amazing. Any non-Jesus owner should be looking to bring him in at the end of the week. Perhaps people are just selling him so they can buy him back for a profit?

I think people are selling him because he made the cardinal FFS FPL sin of blanking in GW1 after lighting it up in preseason.

That's usually punishable by immediate mass salesthe next GW.

I think you should get jesus at his lowest price before deadline. I think you'll regrt Mitrovic on a WC with those fixtures. Makes more sense as a FT than on a WC imo. If you have to lose an Arsenal attacker, I would lose Saka. If not Martinelli. Before Jesus. As I think I replied to you before, the Arsenal defence isn't as much better than their competition than Jesus (and other Arse attackers) are better than their competition imo.

Is Jesus being sold en masse then?

Even better if he blanks against Leicester 'cause the salt will be off the charts when he gets a hattrick and an assist at Bournemouth.

        2nd most sold player
        https://fantasy.premierleague.com/statistics/transfers_out_event
240,806 sales so far isn't quite 'en masse', but it's on the way. Or maybe actually it is!? 😀

I agree to an extent. If he blanks vs Leicester, I'm still extremely unlikely to sell, so people spending FTs and hits to get rid of him would feel like them handing an advantage to me. May captain him vs Bournemouth too!

One think I took from All or Nothing Arsenal so far is the degree to which Arteta is willing his team to attack attack attack. You imagine, watching Arsenal, watching football, that the manager, especially if ahead at halftime, is telling them to solidify and ensure they don't concede. But no, the general pattern seems to be more like, 'Guys, you should score more goals'. When it clicks this season, we might actually see Arsenal hammer a team for once.

His second goal the side flick tap in was a good idea. but it still was hit by a fulham player if you get the right camera angle.
    Still has potential with Salah.

However, got Matty Cash and probably playing 3-5-2 this weekend (starting Perreira) so may just stick for now.

Thats why I asked...it also seems to me that they will have huge problems this season and fir last few sasons they were very lucky that there were always someone worst then them. No chemistry in thar squad at all. Maybe relegation would allow fresh start for them, this way they are just prolonging their agony. Maybe they have luck that Everton looks even worse then them. There are more candidates to go down...

Toying with Wildcarding (pls don't judge lol)

    Ramsdale / Ward
    TAA / James / Cancelo / Perisic / Walker
Diaz / Martinelli / Dewsbury Hall / Dasilva / Pereira
    Kane / Haaland / Nunez

Primarily a 5-3-2 but with good rotation options. Diaz could be any 8.0 (toying with Foden or Kulu) but thinking is TAA Diaz & Nunez will cover liverpool. Think Nunez scores more than Salah now. Kane & Dewsbury Hall could become Son & Archer?

If anyone's interested, there are plenty of people, perhaps the consensus, that White wasn't great at RB against Palace. However, the opinions of people who are paying a bit more attention than the average Twitter user, like the guys at Arseblog and ArsenalVision, hold quite the opposite opinion that White did a great job of keeping Zaha quiet.

In FPL, this could mean a little less pressure on the RCB position as White and Tomi could be vying for the RB slot for the time being, even if that's only another 1-2 weeks (who knows).

That said, I think most people assume Saliba is nailed anyway at this point.

He really is a decent player, his international record for the last couple years speaks for that. Personally I think he's a step above Richarlison. Barca need to sell him because they're desperate to reduce the wage bill and have plenty of players across their frontline so he's surplus to requirements. Can make 2 quality front lines with Torres, Fati, Dembele, Raphina, Auba and Lewa

So, like most serious FPL players, as soon as the game launched I was straight into making draft after draft, and couldn't stop tinkering. I finally settled on a 3 premium attacker set up which I am happy with.
Of course, given the budget constraints, there are a few "punts" in there - namely Bailey, Rashford and Dalot, but that's unavoidable.
I scored 63 in the first game week. After weeks of planning and looking at all sorts of different selections, I would feel gutted if I was considering a GW2 wildcard or ripping up my team structure making panic transfers after data gathered from 1 solitary match.
I won't be making any transfers until GW3, when I'll have two. Even then, I am not convinced about any moves.
I am reading so many messages about mistakes having been made with certain player selections. Is it really possible to class players as mistakes after 90 minutes of football even if their team didn't have a good first game? I won't be rushing into any moves. I've seen countless kneejerk transfers backfire over the years.
I'm keeping faith in my original selection and I am probably going to give the vast majority of them 5 matches to prove their worth. That way, I have a better sample size from which to make a balanced decision.
After Trent and Robertson's blank and Perisic's 24 minute cameo, I see people saying big at the back was a mistake!
What? Give it time - those three players will score bundles of points.
So, in a nutshell, don't panic, keep faith with your team selection and try to get to GW3 with two transfers. Let's face it, we should have set our teams up for 4 or 5 fixtures anyway...

        Its the same every season.

To be honest, I am not fully against a GW2 wildcard. There are seasons when I could've played one and done better than I did but generally, I agree with you we need to see four or five weeks of evidence before we really know who is good value.

A few years ago (20/21?) Wolves looked great in GW2, loads of people tripled up on WC in GW3 and they lost 4-0 at West Ham with a Jimenez OG 🙂

        1. AARON-1
          • 3 Years
          3 years, 4 months ago

Yeah. I won't be panicking about Leon Bailey or even Rashford, for example. I am not rushing to get Aaronson or Ward Prowse based on one match. I've learnt to be patient. Last season I didn't even take a hit until GW14 and finished around 65K. The season prior to that, I was making rash decisions and didn't get much joy. I think each time I booted an "underperformer" out, they came back to haunt me!
Those getting rid of Kane for Haaland will not necessarily benefit hugely over the next 5 matches. The lure of City thrashing Bournemouth 7-0 at home is strong, but let's see what actually transpires. I wouldn't be surprised if Kane returned against Chelsea. I've got both players because I wanted to avoid this anxious transfer.

Patience is usually what works for me.

Last year I didn't start with Bruno F but held off taking a hit to get him in GW2 and fortunately, it worked out really well in the the end as United went south.

FPL is a game as we know it, a frustrating one which changes every week.

You have to plan your GW1 team based on GW2. Does not mean your plan will be fruitful.

Just play your own game. Planning up to GW5 or whatever it may be, hardly works out with how quick the game changes.

It's the dopamine hit and also the desire to be talking about the right, most recent sparkling players each week which leads to transfer hits!

You comment like a person that has never previously read a thread on here, or seen how people on this site play FF. 90% of people that play FF are clueless. And the behaviours outlined above are classic examples of how they play the game, or rush to follow what someone else is doing. But if that is what makes them happy, leave them to it. Who are you say your way is better? Or that they are wrong? It's a really odd post. Do you expect us to congratulate you on these decision you made?

...and "like most serious FPL players", play your own game and let your points tally in May do the talking.

Usain Ballbag - there is no need for that tone. I was merely pointing out that so much time is taken setting up initial squads so jumping to conclusions rapidly is probably in nobody's best interests.
I am not suggesting my way is better or that they are wrong - I was suggesting patience not asking for congratulations.

If you don't like a post, scroll past in future without commenting (I checked your recent comments and I see they all have a negative, confrontational tone about them which is not really my style).

This year is a little bit different, though. The presence of the gw17 wildcard and enforced wildcard AHEAD of that means we can all afford to transfer pretty wildly over the first few weeks and use a wildcard by approx. Gw7 to rectify everything.

So I do understand all the transfer activity.

"with Luis Diaz failing to register a single attempt on goal in that time. "

Come on Villans82, you're unfairly painting Diaz in a poor light there in my opinion. He hit the inside of the post and also scored a very good goal from a tricky angle which was disallowed for offside, but the flag hadn't gone up when he scored it.

        Yeah, big chances, right places.

Did he drop off once he'd got his guy booked? Certainly passed the eye test.

It's a well written article on the whole.

I agree, it is a good article. I saw the FFC v LFC game though and I can make my own mind up about how well a player has played but I don't get to watch them all and I'd like to feel I can trust this article for giving a balanced and fair representation of what actually happened in the match. While it may be factually correct, it's hardly fair on poor old Diaz to say that.

If Bailey gets an assist or a goal at home to Everton, which Villa have to win it's all sweet again.

          He's a budget enabler remember.
