FPL Trader – aka Paulius – is currently ranked 37th in our Hall of Fame and wrote an excellent piece about finding value in pre-seasonHere the three-time top 300 finisher outlines his Gameweek 2 plans and reflects on the decision to play the Bench Boost in Gameweek 1.

A lot of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) decisions simply depend on what kind of manager you are. Personally, I wouldn’t call myself a risk-averse manager. I’m not reckless either but I try not to be swayed by effective ownerships or template teams.

On the contrary, my joy in playing FPL is finding the right moments to move differently from the crowd and, at the same time, gain an edge. I feel that using a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 is exactly that kind of situation.

Why I played the Bench Boost in Gameweek 1

Firstly, a few reasons why this Bench Boost is related to my style of seeking differential moves:

  • It means the Gameweek 1 squad will be different from the template, as there is a need for the manager to spread funds differently to have a stronger bench.
  • Due to this, you will use your Wildcard at a different time than the majority of others. This is a very important aspect. The success of a Wildcard very much depends on timing, as our perception of the best FPL assets changes over time. So if the Gameweek you activate this chip proves to be the ‘right’ one, you will have lower competition when seeking the top FPL ranks.
  • There will be a different chip strategy later in the season, as others will seek to Wildcard right before using a Double Gameweek Bench Boost. You may even use your Free Hit at a different time. Again, being correct with this chip strategy will mean significant rank increases.

The above points are about increasing your variance and, possibly increasing your chances of winning FPL. However, I think it is perfectly viable that a Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 may have been the optimal strategy:

  • A deep bench allows you to have ‘cash cows’ when extra funds are needed.
  • Having 15 active players increases the probability that you’ve included a price-rising bandwagon that increases your team value, as long as you can manage those that decrease.
  • It’s easier to plan chip strategy for later in the season. For example, you may use a Wildcard in the biggest Double Gameweek rather than just beforehand. In my opinion, managers end up focussing too much on maximizing the Bench Boost, whilst sacrificing other opportunities. This chip will usually score you an extra 15-20 points but it also restricts your decision-making freedom, which could ultimately be worth more in points than that Bench Boost.
  • As the World Cup break has provided an extra window for unlimited transfers, many managers were already planning on using an early Wildcard. Therefore carrying an expensive bench wouldn’t be for long.

Furthermore, there is also the strategy of using Bench Boost in Gameweek 1 and then a Wildcard in Gameweek 2. This allows a fun hybrid of Free Hit and Bench Boost but has the disadvantage of deploying a Wildcard with only one week of information. In this case, I preferred to build an opening Bench Boost squad that can also last for at least a few Gameweeks.

Is such a style for you? You’ll need to be mentally prepared for things going badly, as it’s hard to get online sympathy when you use a strategy that is far different from the consensus. Yet this way of playing brings me the most adrenaline and joy.

How did Gameweek 1 go?

My 15-man squad took home 79 points. Without a playing bench, it would have been 71, which is roughly what the template teams scored. I was unlucky with my bench, as the attacking outfielders had a combined expected goal involvement of 0.80, whilst David Raya (£4.5m) conceded twice from an expected goals conceded (xGC) tally of 0.62.

It should have brought at least one return which, in my eyes, would have made it a successful Bench Boost.

My future plans

I have already moved Mason Mount (£8.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) to Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) and Erling Haaland (£11.6m) for a hit. There was no obvious route to Haaland as I did not think he would start the season so strongly – my initial plan was to move Mount to Phil Foden (£8.0m) for Manchester City coverage.

However, it now seems that he will be the main captain option in several upcoming Gameweeks. You need to find opportunities to be different and I think that going without Haaland is not the right one.

    Really good discussion here.

Bold move getting rid of Jesus. I think he scores big this weekend.

Bench boost is an overrated chip but it seems to have caused more headaches than points, obviously with the benefit of hindsight.

it depends, the weeks building a team full of 15 players has hurt me and cost me a few points. I wished I had just used my bench boost earlier. Carrying players like Weghorst or Dennis just for bench boost was a nightmare last season

Yes this exactly. I plan to use mine either after first wildcard this season or after the World Cup. Not a chance am I wasting transfers to create a bench boost.

Then again, you could argue I’m using wildcards to do so.

I think the best strategy might be after World Cup when squads will be in flux and perhaps cheaper players will be more important, initially.

In a normal season, bench boost has worked fine for a DGW. I think last season just ruined it for me but it was very unusual, we never have before last season and hopefully never will see so many dgw's again.

One big one is 34 and another in 37 is when it's best to play bench boost previous "normal" seasons. After the world cup could be a great option depending on the squad you have. Could be some very interesting teams being put out

You don't have to get those types of players for a BB though, just nailed cheapies that will play both games ... not that I took my own advice and fell into a similar trap as you 😉

All things being equal you have 8 games from typical 2 pointer players and 8 pops at the chance of a lucky return.

Can't be any worse than a GW1 BB with a hit to sell Jesus to sort out the mess

I think the biggest problems with the early bb is you have to carry the costly bench for a good few gws and waste transfers downgrading them to enable you to get as much money in your starting 11 as possible.

So it a) limits your cash in starting 11 for weeks after gw1 and if you are a good manager you will get more points the more millions you have in your starting 11

      B) limits your transfer flexibility going forward through either not having budget or having to try and downgrade a bench option to the more effective bench option that becomes available

      C) the lack of knowledge we have in gw1 of the promoted teams makes it harder to pick out the best budget options

      D) your best bet for points with the real budget options is 2 x gws, we don't expect too many attacking returns but there is a chance in 2 x matches that they might pick up something. Your mistake in the past might have been trying to bring in more costly players to take advantage of the bench boost and holding them for a fairly long time. Just take whatever you get for your cheapest bench plus one decent priced sub

Never understood why we'd need to "get rid of it" or "get it out of the way". It's a bonus, you use it whenever you want and if you're not building your team for that bonus, it can't hurt.. Using it on a double still seems optimal.

All chips are headaches to set up and plan for. That doesn't make it more optimal to blow them early with lower TV and less useful data to rely on. FPL Trader messed up, and not just in hindsight.

Trippier to Walker the best move here?

Walker has the better fixtures for each of their next 4 and Trippier is a problem for gw3 and 5 with 2 tricky away games in gw2 and 4. Alternatively I could bring in Saliba for Trippier (or Neco).

    Sanchez
    TAA Robbo Cancelo Trippier
    Salah Kulu Martinelli Bailey
    Haaland Jesus

    Ward, Neco, Andreas, Archer (0.5itb)

    Thoughts?

It’s not that it doesn’t cover mainstream popular questions, it just comes across like you were trying to knock out X word in as little time as possible. “I did this then I did that then I did this”… without any real argument.

Compared to your linked article at the top where you wrote about finding value, which was really interesting, well researched and backed by stats. Genuinely one of the most interesting things I’ve read that one.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, just feel a lot of the contributors are just penning whatever thoughts flow through their heads without backing it up. It feels like a first draft.

      Tricky.

Probably Trippier, although I don’t like it.

I am under the impression Bailey starts, and the old rule is never bench the attacker.

Thanks. That’s what I’m on just now, tho I don’t really like it too much either. Nice to have the positive reinforcement for when it undoubtedly goes wrong

What’s the best option here to replace mount or not:

    A) Mahrez
    B) Foden
    C) Keep Mount

    Ward
    Cancelo - Trent - Robbo - James
    Salah - Mount - Martinelli - Bailey
    Haaland - Jesus

    Iversen - Andreas - Neco - Archer

Would you rather have Ramsdale, Zinchenko or Saliba? My third Gunners slot and it's proving to be a headache

As long as you have the 0.5, ramsdale for now. Zinchenko could play as he did in pre-season, or share mins with Tierney. If he moves to midfield, how does that look? Saliba looked a monster but it was one game and we know there’s no chance of Ramsdale rotation

Salah. Don't think there's much between him and Haaland. Whenever that's the case I usually try to go against the crowd because it's a game.
