Sam Allardyce continued his summer of first-team restructuring on Wednesday with the acquisition of Modibo Maiga from Ligue 1 side FC Sochaux. The highly-rated 24-year-old arrives on a four-year deal thought to be in the region of £4.7m and is the fifth player to make his way to Upton Park since the club’s promotion, following the transfers of Jussi Jaaskelainen, George McCartney, Stephen Henderson and Mohamed Diame:

The Mali international has already received Premier League interest this year – he failed a medical last January at Newcastle, with the Magpies turning instead to Papiss Cisse to boost their strikeforce. A versatile player, he is primarily a centre forward but can also play on the wing; at 6 foot 1, though, Big Sam is likely to play him through the middle as he goes about addressing his options up front. The new boy made all the right noises upon his arrival earlier in the week, going on to say:

I am really happy and excited about joining West Ham United. I know West Ham are a big club in England and I’m really looking forward to representing them. They have huge tradition and it is like joining part of a family and that is one of the main reasons I wanted to come here. I know some of the big names that have played for the club in the past and I am proud to be part of a new team back in the Premier League.

The Statistics

Maiga first start in professional football came in his native country for Stade Malien at the age of 15. He featured just three times there before making his way to Morocco to turn out for Raja Casablanca where, despite failing to score in 22 appearances over the course of a couple of seasons, he won the Arab Champions League and Moroccan League. As a 20-year-old, he was snapped up by French side Le Mans and flourished in a team that also featured the likes of Gervinho and Stephane Sessegnon – Maiga returned 15 goals and six assists over 88 appearances prior to signing for FS Sochaux in time for the 2010/11 campaign.

His first season at Sochaux was a spectacular success, with 15 goals and three assists from 36 appearances, though Maiga suffered in comparison last term. The club’s refusal to allow him to join Newcastle in August 2011 saw him go on strike in order to force a move through – eventually returning to the first-team, he found the net nine times and produced a pair of assists from 23 league matches as his side stuttered to a 14th place finish. Maiga has represented his country on 31 occasions and notched five times – no doubt we’ll be subjected to plenty of “the next Freddy Kanoute” headlines over his time at Upton Park.

The Prospects

A powerful striker, Maiga will also bring plenty pace to the Hammers’ up front options next season. His dynamic game is suited to the speed of the Premier League and will perhaps stand him in good stead in terms of game time next term, providing he can keep his temperament in check. Allardyce still seems undecided on Carlton Cole – 12 of the forward’s 43 appearances last term came from the bench and while Ricardo Vaz Te impressed with 12 goals in 18 appearances upon his January arrival from Barnsley, question marks remain over his ability to produce in the Premier League.

At present, plenty speculation surrounds the West Ham front line. Moves for Andy Carroll and Dimitar Berbatov have been mooted and, while neither may come to fruition, the intent is clear – Big Sam is looking to freshen things up in the forward positions. Looking at the stats, Maiga is clearly best utilised as part of a front two – those 15 goals in 36 appearances in 2010/11 saw him partnered up front in a 4-3-1-2 but Sochaux’s move to 4-2-3-1 last term clearly dented his potential.

If he can nail down a regular role under Allardyce, Maiga could earn interest as a cut-price option in our Fantasy squads. Similar to Cole and Vaz Te, he comes in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) though intriguingly, the Sky Sports game has priced him as the cheapest of the trio at just 6.1 – many are likely to hold fire at the moment, however, with the Hammers certain to continue their summer spending.

Certainly, the opening set of fixtures have been kind to West Ham. Over the first five Gameweeks, Allardyce’s men play host to (AVL, FUL, SUN) and with trips to Swansea and Norwich also on the agenda, confidence in their budget and mid-price Fantasy assets will be relatively high. In terms of ownership, looking at the Sky Sports game, Maiga is the least popular of the Hammers forwards so far – while he’s likely to sneak under the radar of many, then, the new boy may well be quick out the blocks.

    so far...

    DDG

    Fabio, Coloccini, Shawcross

    Silva, Hazzard, Cabaye, Bale

    Papiss Cisse, Aguero, Lambert

Nah to Britton, Bennett and Clyne - will get you very little. Downgrade Cabaye so you can improve all of them. Would steer clear of any Newcastle strikers until the fixtures improve, plenty of good and much cheaper strikers to be had right now (Graham/Petric/Pog... even Jelavic)

    de Gea, Federici
    Cuellar, Tierney, Lescott, Ivanovic, Figueroa

Yeah, Pienaar is obviously conditional. Otherwise I was thinking of downgrading Jelavic to Pogrebnyak and Pienaar to someone else, Silva maybe. GW3 is a problem with having three Chelsea players but yeah, Hazard can easily be changed to someone else.

Hazard has a double. He may be rotated early on, but the same can be said of any Chelsea player. The double makes him a risk worth taking, given that mata is out at the start and lampard continues his decline.

Kagawa's Dortmund form also makes him a risk worth taking... He is a classy playmaker. I'll personally wait on him tho.

Your point is sound tho, impossible to truly say anyone will succeed when they have no prem experience.

Kagawa will likely play in the hole behind Rooney making both of them great picks. Hazard will be guaranteed starts as that was the reason he went to Chelsea. Chelsea also have a DGW so make Hazard an easier pick. I think its more a case of not wanting to miss out if Hazard does well and spend ages catching up more than anything else.

I agree but the page by page format isn't conducive to discussion really as any good points are lost after an hour or so at max. The biggest problem for an otherwise great website imo. Needs a proper forum

I'm dumping my Chelsea defender for Colo from GW 3 onwards. Chelsea's fixtures arent so hot after GW 6, whereas Newcastles picks up.

Im going with DDG and Begovic as my keepers. Stoke have decent fixtures when United have hard ones. And United will keep clean sheets, we all know that. So if not Vidic, DDG is second best to have IMO.

There are two sides to Goa. North and South. North Goa is a lot more commercial. South Goa is a nice recluse. Depends on what you're looking for really. But yeah, shoot through it.

PsyTrance is common yes, but its not so much that it'd put you off. 🙂

No doubt Gerrard is influencial. But he could be a lovely differential, you're right. I just think it's safer to start of the season with a solid team and a 2 punts max.

Any thoughts on my team ? Like alot of people here it will change a few times befor the season starts, but for now :

    Vorm

    Hangeland Shawcross Cole

    Taarabt Hazard Bale Sinclair

    Pogrebnyak Aguero Torres

    Jaaskelainen
    Noble
    McMartney
    Barnett
    2.0 in bank

Shawcross propably going to be switched out at some point and possibly Taarabt.

Nope. I have the same three. UTD and Chelski will need their newbies to provide the skills to open up defences, Fulham dont have anyone else up front 🙂

Anyone actually picking any Ramadan players and dismissing it's effect?

I'm just imagining the routine of Adel, not eating all day and gauging at night. Okay for a "normal" person, but for an athlete?

but the process of returning to a normal routine would take time I'd have thought, affecting their pre-season.

Yeah but last season it was much later and persisted for the first few weeks so had a much bigger impact. Imagine trying to play while fasting. The only one I'm going for is taarabt and I'm happy to take that risk.

It's the bigger guys like Ba, Kaboul & Fellaini that people should worry about. They lose a lot of their natural size and strength advantages while fasting

There have been plenty of Muslim athletes that choose not to take part in it. There is some basis for justifying that apparently. Just what I've read though religion ain't my thing

Could work out to be a good source of points. Chel/ManU/ManC will get 10 CS min surely. Factor in 1-2 goals from Lescott/Vidic/Terry and some boners.

      130+ points each.

I have gone with 2 myself and hoping to rotate the 3rd spot average priced defender. I have Terry and Lescott with Kaboul/Cueller/Fabio.

Yeah. good option with Terry becoming Vidic in week 3. Tempting combo that. Fabio/Cuellar I have but I believe MON have/might sign Warnock + 1. If that's the case then SUN rotation is a worry.Might op for Mign then.

Hey, Chris I saw you went for the Jafa Uber. I tried but I don't know about Newcastle this season.

I would say 2:3 rotators is the best policy. Few cheap defenders and few cheap teams on the West Ham side of rotation.

It's definitely possible but leaves you short in midfield if you also want 2 biggies in attack

      Bego Jussi

      Vidic Cole Lescott 4m x 2

      Bale Kagawa Hoolahan Noble Guthrie

      Rooney Graham Aguero

Not bad but I think you'd want another big midfielder in there.

Yeah Billy. It seems it boils down to Ade + Sinclair vs say Siggy + Graham. If Kagawa comes good then everyone (incl me) will be all over him.

Kagawa was the first name on my team sheet. I'm also quite tempted by 2 Spurs attackers - Bale, Siggy or VDV & Ade. I think it may well be mayhem at the Lane this year.

Kagawa looked lively yest although it was vs my local team AjaxCT.

I'm just thinking Rooney/Kun will be my capt in most fixtures with Rvp so exp. Doubt I will capt Hazard. Would rather opt for Bale(if fit)/Siggy or Ade on peno's.

I'm really considering Vidic/Terry/Lescott although it's totally the opposite of what I always do! Maybe just 2 of those.
