This week we introduce a new guest writer, Mark O’Sullivan, who stumbled upon Sorare back in November 2019.

When he’s not actively scouting for new additions to his squad, he can be found cursing at his players for not delivering the ‘100’ scores like they were supposed to. You can find him on Twitter as @MarkOSullivan94.

Remember, there are now 15 chances to win a real Sorare card every week with the free-to-play Sorare Academy – don’t miss the 11am BST Friday deadline for your latest opportunity.

The power of a differential

Just how important is a differential pick when it comes to Sorare Academy and should you be on the lookout for one (or more) each Gameweek when picking your team?

Taking a look back at the first Gameweek of the new European season and we can find some very interesting results in the top 20. Those who finished 3rd-18th had all picked the exact same line-up, with those finishing 3rd-15th having the exact same total of 472:

We saw a similar pattern (and names) last Gameweek. These are the same names who are frequently mentioned when it comes to discussions about the best footballers in the world but if you’re going for a template team every Gameweek in Sorare Academy, take a step back and think about your competition and consider just how many of them will be going for the same players as you.

Taking a quick glance at the line-up for the winner (LaBridouville) and the runner-up (The_Ages7) in the opening Gameweek, we can see that both managers decided to opt against Donnarumma and instead brought in Paul Bernardoni (The_Ages7) who scored 66 points, three higher than Donnarumma, and Lafont (LaBridouville), who scored an impressive 81 points.

How to pick a differential

You’ve made the decision to go for a differential, what’s next? Here are some things to consider:

Not from an elite team

Avoid the elite teams when trying to decide upon a good differential – everyone knows they typically score well. Straight away that should, at the very least, rule out Bayern Munich, PSG, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Man City.

Always look for favourable fixtures

Recently promoted teams tend to struggle against higher-level teams. If we look back at the opening Gameweek, Luca Kilian (Köln) scored 100, the highest score of all defenders. His opponent that Gameweek was Schalke, a team who only just got back into the Bundesliga.

Looking at the same game, we can see others who also had an excellent match: J. Hector (90.4), E. Skhiri (86.9), F. Kainz (83.6) and D. Ljubicic (79.1)

Criteria for identifying favourable fixtures:

  • Teams playing against recently promoted teams (Premier League is the exception to this rule)
  • Teams playing against teams who struggled last season (at the start of the season)
  • Teams who are playing against a team who just had a midweek game (European fixture/cup game)
  • Goalkeepers/defenders playing against teams who have recently struggled to score
  • Forwards/midfielders playing against teams who have recently struggled to keep clean sheets
Missed recent games

Players can often be overlooked when they have missed a few of their last five games. If you can find out ahead of time that they’re coming back from injury or have finished serving a suspension, then you might be one of the few managers to select them.

Defence is the best form of attack

Using previous Gameweeks as inspiration, we can see that the decision to go for differentials at the back can pay off massively. Given the frequency of elite teams delivering those huge scores for their midfielders and forwards, it might be smarter to pick either a goalkeeper or defender as your differential.

Differential watchlist

Here are some players on my differential watchlist for this upcoming Gameweek:

Goalkeepers

Gregor Kobel (Dortmund): Missed two of his last five games because he was overlooked by his national side. His team, Dortmund, are playing against Werder Bremen, who are now back in the Bundesliga having been promoted last season.

David Soria (Getafe): Getafe are playing against recently promoted Girona, who only had a single shot on target in their first game of the season. If they struggle again, it could be an easy clean sheet for Soria.

Bono (Sevilla): Sevilla are playing Real Valladolid, who got off to a tough start in La Liga, conceding three goals and scoring none against Villarreal following their promotion. It’s worth noting Valladolid have not scored in four games (although three of these are friendlies).

Defenders

Neco Williams (Nottingham Forest): Nottingham Forest are facing Everton, who have lost back-to-back games this season. Williams typically can be relied upon to hit great all-around scores and has delivered three decisive actions in the past 15 games.

Evan Ndicka (Frankfurt): Ndicka has delivered three scores above 90 in the past year and Frankfurt’s opponents Köln have a Europa Conference League midweek game against Fehervar FC, so might have some tired legs for this match.

Ibañez (Roma): Another player who can deliver those elite scores – he has had five 80+ scores in the past year. He’ll be facing newly promoted Cremonese, who will be weakened due to the suspension of starter Gonzalo Escalante following his red card in their opening game.

Melvin Bard (Nice): He has delivered 80+ scores five times in the past year and has a favourable fixture against Clermont who narrowly avoided relegation last season from Ligue 1. Clermont were smashed 5-0 by PSG in the first game of the season and couldn’t score against Reims until Reims got a player sent off.

Good luck!

I hope this has given you food for thought and will aid you to a victorious reward in an upcoming game week on Sorare Academy! Don’t forget that Friday 11am BST deadline and good luck everyone!

WC'ing early to get ahead of the game. Wasn't happy with my double Pool defence, Salah amongst other pics. Spine of the team was changed which is paramount for me.

I'm set up nicely now for the next 5 weeks and can roll and make the odd changes.

I am also switching to this template in my WC. The main players remain the same. I have Ramsdale and Dasilva instead of Sanchez and KDH. Think Ramsdale will keep a few more clean sheets compared to Sanchez.

          Ben Mee (BRE) £4.5m
The centre-back can be found in only 2.5 per cent of squads for Brentford’s trip to Fulham.

Mee has almost doubled in ownership since his 14-point haul at home to Manchester United last weekend.

His goal, clean sheet and two bonus points have earned him 165,000+ transfers in ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 BST deadline.

Mee’s headed goal against Man Utd highlights his major threat at set-pieces.

He has produced at least 13 headed shots from such situations in each of the last three seasons, a feat matched only by Lewis Dunk (£4.5m) and Harry Maguire (£4.9m) among defenders in Fantasy.

Brentford, meanwhile, scored 16 goals from set-pieces last term, a total bettered by just two sides.

The Bees' trip to Craven Cottage starts a run of very favourable fixtures for Thomas Frank’s side.

According to the Fixture Difficulty Ratings (FDR), each of their next five matches score only two.

Mee's potential for points at both ends of the pitch makes him a standout budget pick in defence for that period.

I had to make that decision last night.

Went with Dunk because I think Brighton D is better than Brentford's. But in all honesty Mee may end up being the better pick.

Both will serve you well IMHO.

I'd normally say that double Liverpool defence will have a time in the season where it's viable but I'm less sure this time around. My unpopular opinion before the season began was that Spurs would finish 2nd as Liverpool would struggle a bit with Wijnaldum still having not been replaced (who played such a huge part in covering the defence alongside Henderson when the WBs went forward) and Mane leaving. Obviously the injuries are playing a big part right now, but they're always vulnerable when going forward and Henderson doesn't have the legs he used to to fully cover on his side. Thiago doesn't have the defensive attributes they need and isn't fit often enough just like Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Or Arsenal even, hard to know at this stage and Liverpool may yet prove me wrong. But I don't think they'll be close to City if they're still against signing someone in midfield that can do the job of an 8

TAA & Salah are locks for most teams.

Diaz & Darwin exist. That liverpool 3rd slot has a lot of competition.
There will be many looking at Robbo and seeing obvious value defenders emerging so he will be the fall guy. Happens every season mind.

Cucurella, Zinchenko and Walker are the other options in that price range. Any of them has the potential to return big, the first two more so than Walker, who will probably make it up with more clean sheets. Just not sure who will keep the starting position.

And all 3 of them look more prone to rotation than Robbo.

However, £7m is a large chunk of change for a defender if he's not delivering regular CS and attacking points.

              Don't focus on Gray, Forest...

              Demarai Gray (EVE) £5.5m
The winger can be found in just 0.9 per cent of squads for Everton’s home fixture against Nottingham Forest.

Gray has blanked in his first two appearances against against Chelsea and Aston Villa.

But his delivery at dead-ball situations can help him enjoy a successful outing against Steve Cooper’s side.

Gray has taken five of the Toffees’ 12 corners, while also producing three crosses from free-kicks.

Notably, Forest have struggled to defend set-pieces this season.

They have conceded 11 shots from such situations, the third-worst record in the league.

Overall, Cooper’s men have allowed their opponents 42 shots across the first two Gameweeks, at least eight more than any other side.

Gray, meanwhile, has had three shots, with two coming from inside the box. Both of those totals rank second for Everton.

Some good info can be found off of the FPL official website 🙂

                All very nice.

But he plays for Everton. I would respectfully suggest spending £5.5m on a mid who plays for a club with better prospects.

Mind you, I have Rondon, simply because he will get some game time up to GW9 when I can WC him out, and he is owned by so few people, and quite rightly so, that he shouldn't drop in price between now and then.

This is strictly stay on my bench and give me your 1 point cameo if I need to call on you territory.

Who will you have to play if you keep? If you don't have good cover and don't want to play against Liverpool in GW5 then not the worst idea moving him out, I wanted to keep as I had no problem playing v Liverpool and benching this week but I ended up moving to James to attack Chelsea's next 4 fixtures. Getting Trippier back in around GW8/9 on WC will do (even if not on WC he shouldn't be hard to fit in again)

Why would you sell Trippier? He is the only nailed option out of all the players you mentioned. Look at the history of Conte / Perisic and I am sure you will not want Perisic anywhere near your team. Cucurella will be fighting against Chilwell, Zinchenko against Tierney -- not some ideal fights to be involved in. Trippier's next 3 fixtures are terrible, but nothing you can't overcome with a bench of Neco and Andreas.

This. Plus it's only one or two games. KDB is better on long term. Salah plays too wide and he took the job of creator rather than scorer now.

As I said before, depends on your risk appetite. Salah for a decent rank. KdB for a chance to get an amazing rank, with the obvious downside of a terrible rank if Salah goes on a spree. I will take that chance because I am not afraid of a terrible rank -- its a game after all.

I don't like Saka as a FPL option because of how deep he is playing. Maddison / Kulu / Zaha will be a better choice in my opinion if you want to keep the 4-4-2. However, I like the GW3 4-3-3 WC template, which means Saka, Burn, Dervisoglu --> Dasilva, 5.5m, Toney.

Fair enough. First I went with Madisson and Toney, without Luiz and Saka, but then sold Toney totally forgetting he rose to 7.1 🙁

I am considering Aribo punt or even Welbeck tho.

Aribo and Welbeck can come good. Other options is Mitrovic, who looks to be hungry for goals -- only wish Fulham had better players in the midfield to provide the chances. Another option is Tomiyasu at 4.4m (instead of Burn) to fund Toney. Of course, then you have to play Neco until Tomiyasu comes back to claim his starting spot at right back.

Not considering Mitrovic until Wilson and Solomon are back.

Do you have a plan to get Salah if you need him, or Darwin if you need him?

I’d probably go Kulu over Saka, especially as you already have double Arsenal attack

Would downgrade Saka or James to Cucurella if Salah goes wild.

I don't like Kulu now Rich is there. Might go for Maddison or downgrade to Gross, Aribo or someone in that range.

How do you decide if you need him? Have to give KdB 4 games at least. By that time, Salah has the potential to outscore KdB by 30 points or more -- plus the captaincy points. If he does, then its season over (almost). It is the risk of no-Salah teams. On the other hand, if KdB outscores Salah by 30 points or more, then we are looking at an amazing rank.

Playing safe and getting a decent rank is not something I want -- I will take high risks for higher rewards.

What's people's thoughts on the 5.5m palace boys. Eze and Olise. I'm thinking they could be good options at that price bracket.

wait and see tbh, not sure how Vieira will line up with those 2 and Zaha + plus Ayew or Edouard/Mateta ; if it ends up being Eze central behind a roaming Edouard/Ayew letting Olise and Zaha in off the flanks there will definitely be value in Palace's attack

Estupinan coming in should free up Trossard right? Lallana and Gross racking up decent underlying stats, put Trossard in the same position and he'll be an even bigger threat
