We wrap up our coverage of the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action and start looking ahead to Gameweek 4 in The Digest.

Here, we discuss Wilfried Zaha‘s (£7.1m) goals, Graham Potter’s in-game tactical adjustments and Newcastle United’s form, which has seen them take 43 points from 22 Premier League games in 2022.

WILFRIED ZAHA

Wilfried Zaha has started the season in fine form, netting in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield before scoring twice against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Notably, he has now scored in each of Crystal Palace’s last seven Premier League victories, underlining his talisman status.

Averaging seven points per match across the opening three rounds, Zaha has produced some eye-catching underlying statistics. Indeed, his five big chances can’t be beaten by any midfielder, nor can his 2.70 expected goal involvement (xGI).

Those numbers need context – the action which saw him miss a penalty and convert the rebound in Gameweek 3 accounted for 1.41 of that total – but nonetheless, Zaha is playing well and looks dangerous in the final third.

“He has this fire inside of him that allowed him to get into the game and score goals. He’s an important player for us and if he keeps playing like he did today in and out of possession, we will be stronger as a team.” – Patrick Vieira on Wilfried Zaha

Midway through last season, Palace manager Patrick Vieira challenged Zaha to play closer to goal and find the net more often. And it seems to be working: he has now scored 12 Premier League goals in 2022 with only Tottenham Hotspur duo Son Heung-min (£11.9m) and Harry Kane (£11.4m) scoring more in the competition this calendar year.

“We play in a way that allows him to create more chances, that allows him to be more in front of goal and then it is about him taking those chances. He missed a couple of those chances this year but I believe next season his target has to be around 20 goals.” – Patrick Vieira on Wilfried Zaha last season

Zaha can sometimes be a frustrating own. He is easily riled and occasionally goes missing, but he does feel like a midfielder with significant potential once Palace’s trip to Manchester City is out of the way in Gameweek 4.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Known for his chopping and changing of personnel and systems, Graham Potter has now surprisingly named the same starting XI for three Premier League games in succession.

The 3-4-2-1 set-up (see below) consists of unconventional wing-backs Leandro Trossard (£6.5m) and Solly March (£5.0m), with Pascal Gross (£5.7m) playing centrally in one of the two number 10 positions behind Danny Welbeck (£6.5m).

And it’s that role that has allowed Gross to thrive, with two goals and an assist to his name already this season.

However, having a settled Brighton starting XI/system was almost too good to be true for FPL managers, and it wasn’t long before Potter decided to shake things up in Gameweek 3.

Following new signing Pervis Estupinan’s (£4.5m) introduction after 63 minutes, suddenly, the Seagulls were operating in a back four with Trossard shifted further forward into Adam Lallana’s (£5.0m) role, from where he scored the second goal at the London Stadium.

“I thought we were suffering a little bit when they put Scamacca on — he’s a big target as well, so they were probably going to go long. Dunky (Lewis Dunk) and Webby (Adam Webster) could then work as a more conventional two centre-backs and Pervis (Estupinan) plays left-back. Maybe that helped. We scored pretty much straight afterwards. It makes you think that way in your brain, but until I watch it back I can’t confirm it!” – Graham Potter

“It was the need to go to a four, I thought he could help us there. He’s a full international, has played in the semi-finals of the Champions League. He can play football.” – Graham Potter on Pervis Estupinan

The performances and results have been very good for Brighton and Hove Albion so far this season, so there seems little reason to move away from the 3-4-2-1 formation.

However, Potter now has an orthodox left-back to call upon, and his tactical adjustments will need to be monitored closely in the coming weeks, as it could impact the potential of their FPL assets.

NEWCASTLE UNITED

Under Eddie Howe, Newcastle United have gone from relegation contenders to one of the Premier League’s best sides, highlighted by their ability to go toe-to-toe with Manchester City in Gameweek 3.

It was an excellent all-round display by the Magpies, but far from a one-off performance.

Indeed, only Liverpool, champions Man City and Tottenham Hotspur have collected more Premier League points than Newcastle since the turn of the year, with their only home defeat arriving at the hands of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Above: Premier League annual table 2022, via Transfermarkt

That suggests their assets should be on our Watchlists from Gameweek 6, when their following five fixtures see them sit top of our Season Ticker for fixture difficulty.

Nick Pope (£5.0m) has put in some inspired performances in goal so far, with only Dean Henderson (£4.5m) and David Raya (£4.5m) making more saves than the former Burnley man.

Kieran Trippier (£5.1m), meanwhile, is only behind Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Reece James (£6.1m) for crosses, with set pieces boosting his appeal.

Further forward, Callum Wilson’s (£7.4m) hamstring scan will need to be monitored.

A spell on the sidelines would perhaps benefit Chris Wood (£5.9m), but it’s surely Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.4m) who carries the most potential, fresh from his trio of assists in Gameweek 3, when he was almost unplayable from the left wing.

“He’s OK. Normal process. He’s gone for a scan. We’re waiting on those results. We hope it’s not too serious.” – Eddie Howe on Callum Wilson

The Chelsea defence could look very interesting GW4 bit I am going to guess and say James will not be on the right of 3 CB's and Chilwell will start at LB.

I could be wrong about a back 4 but the back three is not working.

The older CB's cannot keep up with the pace and are becoming error prone.

Don't get in Chilwell yet though, just incase Tuchel decides to stick with James at RCB.

Problem is, you cant shunt the likes of Thiago Silva / Azpi into a back 4, partly for the same reasons you mention. Plus Kalidou suspended, James/Cucu not suited to being CBs in a back 4 either...

Foo Fighter thinks Cucarella can be an attacking CB in a back 4.

He can run up the pitch and leave the opposition free to score everytime.

Admit there’s no such thing as an attacking CB. A Centre backs job is to defend.

A defender that goes up for corners is just a CB and Cucarella won’t ever be banging in headers from corners.

    2. FOO FIGHTER

And why I may just stick with Cucu but will decide between him, James or Chilwell once GW4 is done.

Something up with TT and Chelsea right now, need time to gel. I’m avoiding their defence, especially as on WC and James likely to play CB next GW (if they stick with back 3 - they seem to have recruited to suggest this).

My hunch is they're about to pay what Leicester demand for Fofana because they really need him to cement the Back 3. Timing wise, I supposed immediately after they play each other this weekend, he'll join. That still leaves the problem of midfield cover without Kante.

Personally, I'm stuck with James and Cucu for now - I'm giving them and my Liverpool pair this GW to show me cause to keep. If I were on a WC, I wouldn't have any of them right now.

You’re doubling up on a defence that just lost 3-0 to Leeds, so I’m alright for following your advice.

I’m a way better FPL player than you, you think Cucarella can play CB in a back 4.

Not overthinking - its certainly an issue that we do have to consider at this point & KDB should be the most nailed City attacker. Personally I'm going to try keep Haaland as long as possible but if on WC now I think its worhtwhile considering how you'd structure it without him

You need to take a bigger perspective, especially as your team will take you up to the World Cup. City will probably be far by the highest scorers in the league, and Haaland and De Bruyne probably their top 2 goal-getters. Like everyone else at City, they will be subject to Peptation. To own a City player is to be aware of both the ceiling and the risk. The risk-averse sick with the likes of Harry the Safe; the risk-takers go with the players with the high ceilings. Is KDB a compromise? He'll be rotated too - don't be fooled just because Pep wasn't asked about him. And don't let your thinking by wholly guided by an answer to a question about Haaland when Pep merely reiterated what we'd known since before Haaland even joined the club. It's a reaction to news that isn't even new.

      1. The Mentaculus
        • 4 Years

Hmm, I certainly wouldnt describe my style as risk-averse, but I am a bit more concerned than you Andy. I agree that its not new - but isnt that what makes it different from the usual Peptation - i.e. the specific promises made to Haaland before he joined about protecting his body may limit his action more than the rest of the squad?

        1. Andy_Social
          • 13 Years
          3 years, 3 months ago

Sorry, my comment was meant for the OP. And yeh, I'm saying those promises to Haaland were known before the season started, thus it's not news. We all (should have) brought Haaland into our squads in full knowledge of this. I did, and I knew of the risk of rotation. My reasoning was that it would not be wise to have 2 City assets at risk of rotation, so my others are Ederson and Cancelo.

Oh yeah no worries, I wasnt taking it personally. Just meant that we're getting into what I perceive as the risky phase for Haaland even though I tend to go against the "only pick nailed players" rule more than most

Wich CB will Tuchel start at LCB in a back 4?

    Azpi or TSilva?

    They are both right footed.

I guess he could do Azpi and TSilva in a back 3 with Cucu on the left of the 3 but this will not solve the leakage at the back

But anyway, we will only know GW4 so do not get rid of James or Cucu yet and do not bring in Chilwell yet, ok?

Why would you assume they switch to a back 4?

I am suggesting he might, never said he will because the back 3 is not working.

Plus Koulibaly is suspended so there are possibilities.

So let's see what happens GW4.

I wrote above that I think Tuchel is committed to a Back 3 and that's a reason they MUST get Fofana and will end up meeting Leicester's valuation.

Another bid of £70m was rejected. I don't think LEI are going to accept £80 either so they must be turning to other options and why the rumours of Webster are popping up.

Would you all say this is G2G for this week? If Robbo doesn't perform he's first on the chopping block. Do have 1.6m in the bank which I could use to upgrade Jensen but it would be for a -4?

      Sanchez
      Taa - Robbo - James - Cancelo
      Salah - Aaronson - Martinelli - Jensen
      Haaland - Jesus

      Ward - Greenwood - Andreas - Neco

      ward iversen
      taa cancelo james perisic (williams)
      salah martinelli diaz gross (andreas)
      kane jesus (archer)

got 2ft and not sure what to do. On one hand, seems like I can just do nothing but not sure if I want to waste a ft?

Nice team! A bit torn on Toney myself. What would you do with the extra 2.3 if going Archer instead of Toney, leaving you with 4-4-2?

        Hi guys!

I really need some help here!

        Have the following team:

        Ramsdale (Ward)
        James - TAA - Cancelo - Perisic - (N. Williams)
Salah - Martinelli - Mount - Andreas (Dasilva)
        Haaland - Jesus - (Archer)

        2 FT 0.9ITB

I am considering Gundo/Rodrigo/Zaha for Mount and Toney, Don't have the money to do Mount --> Rodrigo/Zaha + Archer --> Toney

A: Mount --> Gundo Roll 1 FT. Gundo looking sharp and getting into the right positions.
B: Ward --> 4.0 GK? and roll FT. (Give Mount one more chance. Afraid he'll drop again today..)
        C: Other?

        Appreciate all answers!

I would go for A. Think I'm also buying Gundo this week.
Don't see the point in B unless nothing to do & Ward due a drop but he's actually close to rising

        Ramsdale
        TAA Robbo Cancelo James Perisic
        Salah Martinelli Neto
        Haaland Jesus

        (Ward Bailey Andreas Archer)
        2FTs & 0.0m

Neto & Bailey to Gross & 4.5 mid for free?

Thoughts? Anything other moves to consider?
Just cant convince myself to sell Robbo before those Pool fixtures.

Here's a pattern that I've noticed emerging this season that I've not seen anyone in the media draw attention to:

The 'superstar' managers have their tactical philosophies - your Peps, Klopps, Contes, Artetas, Tuchels. They expect to dominate the opposition and the onus is on the opposition to find a way through.
And then there's the emerging second tier - Potter, Frank, Vieira, Marsch, Howe (barely fits here as his club is technically the richest on the planet). Clubs of more modest means, can't compete financially, inferior to the top sides on paper. But - and here's the key - phenomenally fast and astute at adapting their tactics. We can see how they analyse a top opponent's last match and expose the weak spots to ruthlessly exploit them. This weekend, expect to see Vieira implement what worked for Howe v City and Potter close the gaps Chelsea left v Leeds. These managers are making life much harder for the top teams, to the betterment of football overall, even if it makes our picks ever harder.

I left on manager off the list - Ten Haag. He's supposed to be an elite manager with a winning philosophy. The key to that victory is what he didn't do. He didn't implement his 'way'. He resorted to pure Ole-ball. Fascinating. I've no idea what he does going forward, so I will continue to reserve judgement.

The 'bigger' teams will concede goals this season becase the 'smaller' teams know that he only way the can beat or snatch a goal is via lightning quick counter attack.

Cleanies will not be a route to guaranteed points this season.

Thus has it always been. Just that Liverpool (and City v Newcastle) aren't currently defending against that very effectively

Yeah absolutely its fascinating what these guys are doing, especially Potter, what a f-ing genius man. I am happy you included Marsch there, but I would say that he's actually (on a stylistic level) more like the 1st tier in some ways. I don't think it was any specific adjustment that got us that result, but rather that Chelsea just happened to be the perfect victims for the high tempo pressing style that he's going to employ routinely.

The Chelsea game was the first time I've watched a Marsch side for 90 mins, so I'll defer to you there. Just been watching Scoutcast where Seb Wassell, also a Leeds fan, reckons Potter will have Seagulls there them apart, having watched the Chelsea game.

Could really do with a Son Haul Vs Nottingham Forest. Worth noting they conceded 20 shots yesterday Vs Grimsby!!
I’m keeping Son for this GW anyway before doing WC next week

Interesting. Presumably they had a substantially different team out. So conceding a high volume of shots whatever the team, level or opposition sounds systemic. It would keep me away from Neco and Hendo, personally, no matter how many saves.
