Michael Laudrup’s third foray into the summer transfer market since becoming manager of Swansea has seen the Spanish attacking midfielder Michu arrive for a deal in the region of £2m. The 26-year-old – whose full name is Miguel Perez Cuesta – joins up at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year contract from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, after his goalscoring exploits helped the Spanish side narrowly avoid relegation by a mere two points last season:

The move for Michu continues Laudrup’s policy of plundering talents that have previously caught his eye in Spain’s top-flight, with fellow new boys Jonathan De Guzman and Chico both having featured under the Dane in La Liga. Similar to De Guzman and Chico, Michu admits the allure of playing for Laudrup was simply too good an opportunity to miss:

I’m very happy. I had other offers, but I really wanted to come to Swansea because of the coach, the style of play and the Premier League. I’ve always followed the Premier League from Spain and I watched a lot of Swansea games last season. They played good football and I liked their style. I also know how Michael Laudrup’s teams play, so I’m looking forward to being part of that.

The Statistics

Michu began his career in the lower leagues in Spain where, as a 16-year-old, he debuted for Real Oviedo. Over the course of four campaigns, he notched 13 times in 100 appearances before being snapped up by Celta Vigo in 2007-08. Initially, he featured in the club’s “B” team but a tally of 10 goals from 28 games saw him end the campaign in the first-team at the second division side.

A modest 15 goals in 103 appearances over the next three seasons were unable to help his side win promotion to La Liga – a missed spot-kick in the 2010/11 promotion play-off against Granada proved costly as his side slipped to defeat 5-4 on penalties. Michu’s chance of playing in the Spanish top-flight was not to be denied, though; Rayo Vallecano came calling last summer after his contract with Celta expired and snapped him up on a Bosman.

Handed a role in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Michu was a sensation in his one and only season in La Liga. Despite their lowly league position, Vallecano racked up 53 goals – only six less than third placed Valencia – and their attacking approach helped Michu return 15 goals and three assists, making him the top scoring midfielder in Spain’s top division last time round.

The Prospects

Initially, many had expected De Guzman to slot into the attacking midfield position vacated by Gylfi Sigurdsson but Laudrup perhaps hinted at an alternative slot upon the player’s arrival when he stated the Dutch international could play in “anywhere in midfield”.

Michu, on the other hand, is a far more direct type of player and seems to be in the driving seat for the central role behind a lone striker as Laudrup goes about rebuilding his squad in light of Brendan Rodgers’ departure. Although his ability to create opportunities for others isn’t quite up to Sigurdsson’s level, Michu is likely to offer a substantial goal threat for the Swans; standing 6 foot 1, he’s good in the air as well as on the ground and his strong work-ethic should also stand the Spaniard in good stead as he adjusts to the rigours of the Premier League.

With both player and manager experiencing the English top-flight for the first time, there’s some trepidation as to how quickly the Welsh club will settle under Laudrup but the Dane has already spelled out his intention to maintain the same shape and style of play from last term, suggesting the transition could well be seamless. Already, Michu is garnering plenty of attention, despite the fact he has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game; bearing in mind that De Guzman came in at 6.0, a similar cost looks on the cards, though. The Spaniard has been handed a 5.5 valuation in the Sky Sports game, offering us a viable mid-price Fantasy contender for the season ahead.

Casting an eye over the fixture list, Swansea have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any side. Over the first eight Gameweeks, they play at home five times – with (WHM, SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) all visiting the Liberty Stadium, in addition to trips to QPR, Villa and Stoke, some level of investment in Laudrup’s troops seems a sensible tactic. If Michu can settle quickly and replicate his Vallecano form, Swansea – and Fantasy managers – may well have found their Sigurdsson replacement for the season ahead.

Am I the only one who thinks Michu is gonna be 6.5? I mean I really hope he isn't but 15 goals last season, surely FPL will have twigged onto that and gave him a fairly high price tag, look at Sigurdsson what happened there?

It looks like Fergie has taken a leaf from Harry's book. All this transfer targets pronouncements are baffling. What do we expect next time? Fergie doing an interview as he leans on his car window infront of journalists at Carrington?
I guess all this is a strategy by the Glazers to create excitement among fans inorder to hoodwink them into buying season tickets.

A bit undecided to be honest.

Despite his mostly underwhelming performances for Liverpool I sill think he's a cracking striker when used properly. However, I think we've moved on from two years ago and I'm not sure we could fit him into the current setup without breaking it.

I'd probably happily have him at a cut price and then use him as impact sub where we're behind or in certain games where Pardew wants to change style but I can't see that happening for any number of reasons - wages, egos, etc.

I do love a good prodigal son story but my head rules my heart and says no. Just.

            You?

Similar to you really. Problem as I see it is that if we re-sign him for 12M+ and high wages, we're not going to be using him as an impact sub and as you said we've moved on from where we were with him up top.

If he did sign, think it would be the end of the 433 which would be disappointing as imo we played best last season with it.

So overall, I don't really want him back.

But it isn't down to a schedule conflict, or tiredness. It's more to do with the fact that the Olympians won't have had a pre-season with their respective club sides - so the managers may opt to bring them in slowly rather than kick someone out who's participated in the warm up games. Sure the Olympians will play, but they're very likely to be substitutes for the first couple of games.

Point taken, but Mata has already played a whole season at Chelsea and is a known quantity to Di Matteo. He also won't be short of match sharpness or fitness having played in the Olympics (and grabbed a cheeky cameo goal in the Euro 2012 final).

Can't discount the possibility of him being subbed around in the first two games though, especially with that midfield. Increasingly wondering whether to give Chelsea midfielders a miss, at least until the picture clears. Lampard is looking interesting now because his chances of starting both look pretty good. I would take Ramires if I knew he'd play.

People keep knocking his chances of playing regularly but a player of that calibre won't be sitting on the bench. Looks such an intelligent player and doesn't waste possession when he has it.

Really don't know what's going through SAF's mind right now though, can we assume Valencia is safe either? Nani can play on the right too. Until the first couple of games I won't be able to safely include any of the three.

Ok now for something completely different!

I run a Fantasy League in me local and its based on the Sun Dreamteam Prices but the FPL scoring system. Each team is allowed 1 sub goalie, 2 sub defs mids and forwards but can't go over budget with the subs, eg 5mill player can't swap in for a 4.5 mill player unless you have .5 left out the 50mill. I won last year but can't get me head around it this year but have ended up with this....

    Friedel 3
    Zabeleta 4
    Baines 5
    Agger 4
    Luiz 4.5
    Hazard 4
    Valencia 4.5
    Siggy 3.5
    Toees 5.5
    Aguero 7
    Giroud 4 if RVP goes

    Subs
    Krul 2.5
    Hangeland 3.5
    Huth 2
    Ben Arfa 3.5
    Moses 3
    Jelavic 3.5
    Podolski 3.5

Can change the starting XI once a month?

Bit complicated but i think it makes sense, as i have less paperwork to do each week....

    Any comments would be nice...

Feeling reasonably happy with this lot. Feel like my GKs and DEFs rotate well. But please, please, tear it apart!

    Foster - Begovic
    Ivanovic - Clichy - Hangeland - Cuellar - Alcaraz
    Bale - Kagawa - Pienaar - Maloney - Noble
    Aguero - Torres - Graham

He's current fav alongside Verty, I would think. But it'll depend on pre-season, fitness and who impresses AVB. oth Daws and Caulker will get their share of games too.

Problem I have with Sess Tosey is that we have no idea who SUN's forward (s) will be. Wickham and Campbell will hardly set the world on fire, so does MON continue to push Sess forward? Perhaps, but he could equally buy 1 or 2 new attackers and move Sess wide. For £8m, that's too much doubt. One to watch early doors for me.
