Michael Laudrup’s third foray into the summer transfer market since becoming manager of Swansea has seen the Spanish attacking midfielder Michu arrive for a deal in the region of £2m. The 26-year-old – whose full name is Miguel Perez Cuesta – joins up at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year contract from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, after his goalscoring exploits helped the Spanish side narrowly avoid relegation by a mere two points last season:

The move for Michu continues Laudrup’s policy of plundering talents that have previously caught his eye in Spain’s top-flight, with fellow new boys Jonathan De Guzman and Chico both having featured under the Dane in La Liga. Similar to De Guzman and Chico, Michu admits the allure of playing for Laudrup was simply too good an opportunity to miss:

I’m very happy. I had other offers, but I really wanted to come to Swansea because of the coach, the style of play and the Premier League. I’ve always followed the Premier League from Spain and I watched a lot of Swansea games last season. They played good football and I liked their style. I also know how Michael Laudrup’s teams play, so I’m looking forward to being part of that.

The Statistics

Michu began his career in the lower leagues in Spain where, as a 16-year-old, he debuted for Real Oviedo. Over the course of four campaigns, he notched 13 times in 100 appearances before being snapped up by Celta Vigo in 2007-08. Initially, he featured in the club’s “B” team but a tally of 10 goals from 28 games saw him end the campaign in the first-team at the second division side.

A modest 15 goals in 103 appearances over the next three seasons were unable to help his side win promotion to La Liga – a missed spot-kick in the 2010/11 promotion play-off against Granada proved costly as his side slipped to defeat 5-4 on penalties. Michu’s chance of playing in the Spanish top-flight was not to be denied, though; Rayo Vallecano came calling last summer after his contract with Celta expired and snapped him up on a Bosman.

Handed a role in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Michu was a sensation in his one and only season in La Liga. Despite their lowly league position, Vallecano racked up 53 goals – only six less than third placed Valencia – and their attacking approach helped Michu return 15 goals and three assists, making him the top scoring midfielder in Spain’s top division last time round.

The Prospects

Initially, many had expected De Guzman to slot into the attacking midfield position vacated by Gylfi Sigurdsson but Laudrup perhaps hinted at an alternative slot upon the player’s arrival when he stated the Dutch international could play in “anywhere in midfield”.

Michu, on the other hand, is a far more direct type of player and seems to be in the driving seat for the central role behind a lone striker as Laudrup goes about rebuilding his squad in light of Brendan Rodgers’ departure. Although his ability to create opportunities for others isn’t quite up to Sigurdsson’s level, Michu is likely to offer a substantial goal threat for the Swans; standing 6 foot 1, he’s good in the air as well as on the ground and his strong work-ethic should also stand the Spaniard in good stead as he adjusts to the rigours of the Premier League.

With both player and manager experiencing the English top-flight for the first time, there’s some trepidation as to how quickly the Welsh club will settle under Laudrup but the Dane has already spelled out his intention to maintain the same shape and style of play from last term, suggesting the transition could well be seamless. Already, Michu is garnering plenty of attention, despite the fact he has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game; bearing in mind that De Guzman came in at 6.0, a similar cost looks on the cards, though. The Spaniard has been handed a 5.5 valuation in the Sky Sports game, offering us a viable mid-price Fantasy contender for the season ahead.

Casting an eye over the fixture list, Swansea have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any side. Over the first eight Gameweeks, they play at home five times – with (WHM, SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) all visiting the Liberty Stadium, in addition to trips to QPR, Villa and Stoke, some level of investment in Laudrup’s troops seems a sensible tactic. If Michu can settle quickly and replicate his Vallecano form, Swansea – and Fantasy managers – may well have found their Sigurdsson replacement for the season ahead.

I made the vow at the end of last season that I would try (try being the word) and not spend as much time agonising over this game which seems to have taken over my life. So in order to do so, I would pick a more balanced team from the outset and then just go from there. I’ve come up with this:

    Friedel/Federici
    Vidic/Cole/Clichy/Colo/Cuellar
    Hazard/Pienaar/Taarbat/Noble/Guthrie
    Torres/Aguero/Graham

£2m in the kitty for Torres/Rooney.

I know the defence is pretty expensive, but I think it represents good value and I can pretty much leave it untouched bar the odd rotation. Once Rooney goes in, the same goes for the frontline.

Might not be favoured on here, but happy with it anyway.

I like the front line (inc your transfer plan - and subsequent 'leave it be' plan - those are often the best plans)

I'd shift some money out of defence and into midfield. Clean sheets were at a premium last year and will be again IMO. Everyone can nick one against every one else. I'd rather have a goal scoring mid

True thinking about it there is a better chance with Chelsea attack then defense, and taking this out of the situation would help the fact of taking a hit to get the chelsea players out by GW3. You will get a guaranteed 2 free points from getting a chelsea defender, does this outweigh the hit you are probably going to take to get rid of them? Personally I think yes, as the chances of clean sheets are quite good.

He's in my thoughts for sure, but he is prone to drop deep and play an almost pivote role, keeping it ticking along - with Silva/Aguero/Tevez gobbling up the points in front of him. Having said... still in my thoughts at 8.5.

6 needn't be foolish, as long as the other 9 players and the 2 that you transfer in before GW3 are all nailed on starters. That's difficult to be certain of though. Then there are possible injuries from the first 2 games. It's very risky.

On the other hand, having 4 or 5, still gives you the chance to have a full team of 11 on GW3.

if one is Federici it's cool. 2 transfers later and you're sorted. I'm stickin with just 3 though(one of whom is Fred) as i'd rather not waste transfers. don't want chelsea or reading players long term.. unless they do brilliant

depends how many of them are goal keepers. If you have 5 outfield DGWs then you can transfer 2 of them out for free before gw3 and then bench the remainders. But you will not be able to sort the rest of the team which may well need sorting at the start of the season.

I have to agree. Tevez is quite possibly a diamond in the rough, but for £9.0 I want to be certain of a first team berth. If he begins to nail himself on the lineup then it is a no brainer, but until then there Aguero is worth the extra cash, as he is almost certain to play 85 minutes in most games.

Pog is cheap, but don't expect him to get many points. The last time he broke double figures in league competition was 2007, and those who follow Bundesliga were a bit gobsmacked that he managed to get any in the Premier League.

I imagine his form will be more akin to his last 6 games at Fulham than his first 6. Plus he is at Reading.

An everyone please just remove Jenkinson from their team. It isn't funny anymore.

    Why would you pick him?!

    1) what are the chances of him starting? Sagna might be back; Djourou can play there; Others can do a job ie Kochelny.
    2) Ok he starts. How many games? 1? 2? 3? Then what?
    A) Waste a transfer taking him out
    B) leave him to rot and losing 4.5 points potential each game.

What are these people thinking of?!

He *might* actually be a rather handy 1st month punt. Bearing in mind his crossing ability and Arsenal's wingbackish tendencies. Agree it's hard to take him out when Sagna inevitably replaces him though.

    Schwarzer - Begovic

    Terry - Vermaelen - Coloccini - Cuellar - Demel

    Bale - Valenica - Sinclair - Noble - Maloney

    Aguero - Torres - Petric

With a view to do Terry > Baines GW2 or 3

Vermaelens a nice differential. Was looking at him my self, but then realized he's a luxury and I'd rather play MCY/(CHE or NEW)/TOT rotating with WHU/RDG if need be. I might have a look at Sagna once he's slotted it.

Good team. I'm on the Petric wagon too.

Yeah I initially started with the standard Ivanovic - Lescott combo, but start of the season is always unpredictable for clean sheets. I fancy saints to nick one against City.

Plus Verm is such a goal threat that I plan to have him and Baines as my main 2 defenders.

Needs more Everton. Kaboul seems on the cheap side, but I am slightly concerned about the Spurs back line under AVB so have stumped for Hibbert or Heitinga (yet to decide).

So, assuming Evans/Vidic won't be 100%, Smalling confirmed out and Rafael doubtful as playing in Olympics...

Will the defence be Valencia, Rio, Jones, Evra for the opening fixture? Kagawa looks more inviting than Valencia if so. Guess one to review nearer the time.
