Michael Laudrup’s third foray into the summer transfer market since becoming manager of Swansea has seen the Spanish attacking midfielder Michu arrive for a deal in the region of £2m. The 26-year-old – whose full name is Miguel Perez Cuesta – joins up at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year contract from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, after his goalscoring exploits helped the Spanish side narrowly avoid relegation by a mere two points last season:

The move for Michu continues Laudrup’s policy of plundering talents that have previously caught his eye in Spain’s top-flight, with fellow new boys Jonathan De Guzman and Chico both having featured under the Dane in La Liga. Similar to De Guzman and Chico, Michu admits the allure of playing for Laudrup was simply too good an opportunity to miss:

I’m very happy. I had other offers, but I really wanted to come to Swansea because of the coach, the style of play and the Premier League. I’ve always followed the Premier League from Spain and I watched a lot of Swansea games last season. They played good football and I liked their style. I also know how Michael Laudrup’s teams play, so I’m looking forward to being part of that.

The Statistics

Michu began his career in the lower leagues in Spain where, as a 16-year-old, he debuted for Real Oviedo. Over the course of four campaigns, he notched 13 times in 100 appearances before being snapped up by Celta Vigo in 2007-08. Initially, he featured in the club’s “B” team but a tally of 10 goals from 28 games saw him end the campaign in the first-team at the second division side.

A modest 15 goals in 103 appearances over the next three seasons were unable to help his side win promotion to La Liga – a missed spot-kick in the 2010/11 promotion play-off against Granada proved costly as his side slipped to defeat 5-4 on penalties. Michu’s chance of playing in the Spanish top-flight was not to be denied, though; Rayo Vallecano came calling last summer after his contract with Celta expired and snapped him up on a Bosman.

Handed a role in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Michu was a sensation in his one and only season in La Liga. Despite their lowly league position, Vallecano racked up 53 goals – only six less than third placed Valencia – and their attacking approach helped Michu return 15 goals and three assists, making him the top scoring midfielder in Spain’s top division last time round.

The Prospects

Initially, many had expected De Guzman to slot into the attacking midfield position vacated by Gylfi Sigurdsson but Laudrup perhaps hinted at an alternative slot upon the player’s arrival when he stated the Dutch international could play in “anywhere in midfield”.

Michu, on the other hand, is a far more direct type of player and seems to be in the driving seat for the central role behind a lone striker as Laudrup goes about rebuilding his squad in light of Brendan Rodgers’ departure. Although his ability to create opportunities for others isn’t quite up to Sigurdsson’s level, Michu is likely to offer a substantial goal threat for the Swans; standing 6 foot 1, he’s good in the air as well as on the ground and his strong work-ethic should also stand the Spaniard in good stead as he adjusts to the rigours of the Premier League.

With both player and manager experiencing the English top-flight for the first time, there’s some trepidation as to how quickly the Welsh club will settle under Laudrup but the Dane has already spelled out his intention to maintain the same shape and style of play from last term, suggesting the transition could well be seamless. Already, Michu is garnering plenty of attention, despite the fact he has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game; bearing in mind that De Guzman came in at 6.0, a similar cost looks on the cards, though. The Spaniard has been handed a 5.5 valuation in the Sky Sports game, offering us a viable mid-price Fantasy contender for the season ahead.

Casting an eye over the fixture list, Swansea have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any side. Over the first eight Gameweeks, they play at home five times – with (WHM, SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) all visiting the Liberty Stadium, in addition to trips to QPR, Villa and Stoke, some level of investment in Laudrup’s troops seems a sensible tactic. If Michu can settle quickly and replicate his Vallecano form, Swansea – and Fantasy managers – may well have found their Sigurdsson replacement for the season ahead.

I am struggling with Keepers. Looking for the best combo for 9.0 mil.

    Current backline is :

    Federici / Green (9.0)
    A.Cole / Vertonghen / Hangeland / Demel / Clyne (20.0)

I have been toying with Begovic / Jaaskelainen but I am not sure of doubling up W.Ham?

    Any ideas?

I think the problems is that there is no 4.5*2 combo that looks particularly attractive. The rotations aren't great and the actually quality of defences you are buying into is low.

Having said that I do think the Begovic/Jass option is the best one and that is the one I will go for if I don't go DDG/Fed.

Cheers. I guess I could downgrade Hangeland for a 4.5 and use a 3 team rotation in defense. Problem is I am just not that keen on doing that either....

I would prefer the three player rotation if that was the budget I was working with. You will have 3 defensive players from "Top 4 Clubs" rather then the two you currently have. To me that is worth having at the start of a season.

Earlier there was some discussion about going all out for forwards, with a spread of mid priced midfielders and a value defence. I liked the idea but have found that a "gamble" on Tevez allows for the retention of one big hitter in MF and a strong defense. Thoughts appreciated.

similar to what i'm trying but mf too light, like that you've worked DDG in tho.

      Fed, Jask
      Cole, Lescott, Clich, Demel, Fonte
      Valencia, Hazrad, Noble, Frei, Gardener,
      Torres, Roon, Tevez

Don't like that i'd have to play Noble and a make-weight every week

You need spread the cash a bit more in MF.

Downgrade Valencia to a 6.0 and spread the £.

No need for double Man U attack at this stage either IMO.

It could work. The problem I have with the mid-priced mids is you often end up with a lot of points on your bench. However, if you're going to go heavy up top, get Aguero rather than Tevez if you can afford it. (disclaimer: I have the Orc at the moment though, but only because I have gone heavy in the middle)

Yep, I am slightly uncomfortable about relying on Tevez given my overall reliance on forwards. I will monitor the situation closely for trong signals. IMO he will start although may not finish too many.

I am a traditionalist at heart; going for balance rather than balls out on the front three. However, now that the goalscorers seem to get most of the bonus, plus the last two years showing the front 3 are the way to go, it might be a good idea for me to "get with the times, " dude!

Penalty are touches: Hangeland 36 - Hughes 5

He has a relatively good scoring average over his career and law of averages suggests now would be a good time to buy.

O.K had a few shuffles and ended up with the following:

    Cerny/De Gea
Lescott, Simpson, Williams, Cole A, Barnett
Kagawa, Hazard, McAnuff, Yaya Toure, Noble
    Torres,Aguero, Pogrebnyak.

    100m

After double GW get rid of Torres for either Cisse, Podolski or Jelly.(not sure yet, which do you think?) Learning towards Jelly to play West Brom

It also frees up 1.5 for GW4 to switch Yaya to Dempsey when Fulham play West Brom.

Got nothing against Brom but I think they will conseed quite a few goals.

Or would it be better to go Arteta for Arsenal coverage when they play Southampton?

I expect the midfield trio to be Britton, Allen and Michu, with Michu in the Sigurdsson role, if Allen ends up going to Liverpool then De Guzman will fill in for him.

For attacking returns you're looking at Michu basically. If Allen stays then he will suffer occasional rotation from De Guzman and Gower I expect, but will be first choice.

Sinclair and Dyer are first choice either side of Graham in the front 3, and are both reasonable attacking options, Routledge will see only occasional gametime, but will probably play in the front 3.

This is assuming Laudrup continues with the same system as Rodgers

That's fair reasoning. I am not sure I believe Mancini when he says all the feuds between him and Tevez are history. After all, he said the Orc would never play for City again whilst he was manager after the Bayern debacle...

Mancini knows though, how important Tevez was last season. He basically turned things around single handedly when they were really struggling. For that maybe Mancini has forgiven him. Wishful thinking maybe .. 🙂

Nice to see someone who is thinking about what actually happened last season with Tevez. Too many people on here saying "Tevez is a rotation risk" with no real thought behind their comments other than saying it because they want to opt for Aguero instead, Your spot on Duffman. I couldn't agree more. not only that, Mancini was saying it himself last Friday.

Yeah, if he doesn't play I'll have to eat my words. Mancini was giving large about how well he is training and that their spat is behind them etc etc. You have to be mad to ignore him at that price imo. For me, Aguero went missing too many times on the road last year for City. Tevez seemed to change that for the short time they played together.

Get asked this a lot, even people who see me can't work it out lol! Parents from Singapore so ethnically Chinese. My dad was born in Malaysia though, so he had Malaysian nationality and passed it to me. I was born in Birmingham and inherited his Malaysian nationality. I changed to British nationality a few years ago. Also I'm 1/64th Russian. 😀

Nice! Wasn't convinced you're ethnically Chinese because of your name as it sounds more European so after you mentioned you've got a bit of Russian background. I live in Malaysia for 11 years, then moved to Australia.

Yeah the parents managed to choose a name that didn't completely give me away lol. Nice, the Malaysian > Australia route. Ahhh Malaysia. A crazy place but I have a special place in my heart for it despite all its faults. I was amazed by how much Malaysian food was in Melbourne when I visited - teh tarik, satay and sambal easy to get hold of!

Ahh... I thought I was the only one of my kind here. Lol. Exactly! But they don't taste as authentic. We used to have a place called Old Town and I'm sure you know the restaurant. The owner bought a new franchise and converted it to Pappa Rich. Well, at least I still get to taste a bit of Malaysian food here better than none.

I know they're not as authentic... and much, much more expensive than back home. I was impressed with Melbourne though, very cosmopolitan. A lot more Chinese than I expected, wouldn't say it's necessarily a good or bad thing hahaha 😉 Unfortunately I was only in Melbourne for a week so didn't get to access all restaurants. There was an incredible dumpling place off Elizabeth St though - might have been Little Bourke St.

A lot of Chinese here, and the immigration rules get tougher by the year for foreigners to live here permanently. I can't remember a dumpling place around Elizabeth Street, but by what you mentioned Little Bourke Street, I think it might have been China Town you went! I know couple great dumpling places there but some of them quite pricey. Were you here on holiday or business trip?

Nope Malaysia is pretty possessive about it. Dual citizenship banned as far as I'm aware, so I had to choose between being Malaysian or British. Went for the latter in the end, but it wasn't easy.

I always think of myself as British now because I was born there... same as you then for India I guess.

Ah Doos you got me there. I spent a long time during my uni years searching in vain for a decent Malaysian restaurant. I think I was just in the wrong area, out west near South Kensington. The only decent one I can think of has an exotic Singaporean name - the Bugis Street Brasserie (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/bugis-street-brasserie-london) in South Kensington. Delicious char kway teow (fried noodles) and some other cool stuff.

Just completed a Metro team for the work's league.

1st thoughts- What is the point system all about. Last season's top scorer's just seem really random! Stephen Ward finished in the top 10 scoring players?!

Also the pricing is a joke. Really easy to get an expensive team.

Right to the the crux. If anyone knows/plays the Metro team can you give me a quick rating.

    Krul
Riise Rangel Hibbert (Full backs score better than centre backs)
Bale Sigurdsson Silva Downing (He finished 29th top midfielder - can't do worse this time!!)
    Aguero Torres Rooney

    Michu B Jones Wilkinson Harper

Remeber this is the Metro league not the FPL.

I don't see the value, Manu & Chels have upped their game this season already. Unless he stays he'll need time to fit in (assuming it's a late tranny) and if he goes to Man U or City he's a rotation risk.

      Tim Howard (5.5) - Tim Krul (5.0) = 10.5

      S.Taylor (5.0) - N.Taylor (5.0) - Teirney (4.0) - Terry (7.5) - Tomkins (4.5) = 26.0

      Touré (8.0) - Taarabt (6.0) - Tiote (5.0) - Theo Walcott (9.0) - Tony Valencia 😉 (9.0) = 37

      Tevez (9.0) - Torres (10) - T. Smith (4.5) = 23.5

      97.0 roughly

Assuming Michu is 6(which i think he will be) and Pienaar goes to Everton.. i can put out this monster of a team
    Migs Federici
    A.Cole Hangeland Cuellar Demel Clyne
    Bale Pienaar Taraabt Michu Noble
    Torres Rooney Aguero

Doubt i will though., No flexibility.
Anyway. that's my last thought for tonight.
    Goodnight everyone
