Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are looking to Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, for the Gameweek 6 captaincy, and as per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to highlight which assets have the best chance of hauling.

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 6 captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Saturday’s 11:00 GMT deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

Erling Haaland (£11.9m) is the leader of the captain poll in Gameweek 6, with just under 45% of total votes from our users at the time of writing.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) plays understudy to Manchester City’s Norwegian for the second successive Gameweek, backed by a mite over 30% of those polled.

Harry Kane (£11.4m) occupies third place with 5%, followed by Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£12.2m), with 3.7% and 3.1% respectively.

HOW HAS CAPTAIN SENSIBLE PERFORMED SO FAR THIS SEASON?

Gameweek1st2nd3rd
1Salah (12)Kane (2)Son (5)
2Haaland (5)Salah (2)De Bruyne (14)
3Salah (8)Jesus (4)Kane (6)
4Salah (3)Kane (10)Haaland (17)
5Salah (10)Haaland (17)De Bruyne (1)

THE MAIN CANDIDATES

MOHAMED SALAH/TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD

Mohamed Salah provided two assists, and registered a somewhat fortuitous double-digit haul, in Liverpool’s last gasp 2-1 home victory over Newcastle United in Gameweek 5.

A security of starts, and expected minutes, made Salah the safe armband choice – but Liverpool’s Egyptian required eight stoppage time minutes and his shoulder – to assist Fabio Carvalho (£5.4m) and break Newcastle’s hearts.

Salah failed to muster an effort on target against the Magpies in a shot-shy performance symptomatic of his campaign to date.

The Egyptian has recorded four shots on target from a total of 14 attempts across the five opening rounds.

Essentially, that’s a shot accuracy of 28.6%, down from an average of 39.6% across last season.

Assessing the two periods, Salah has seen a significant drop in goal threat – with minutes per attempt capitulating (from 19.9 to 32.1) and minutes per expected goal slowing (from 116.8 to 189.9).

Surprisingly, Liverpool’s Egyptian leads the division for key passes (21) with his minutes per chance created seeing a sharp uptick compared to last term (45 to 21).

However, Salah boasts a strong recent record against the Toffees with four attacking returns, three goals and one assists, in his last four Merseyside derbies.

C:\Users\1475775\Downloads\Salah chances created.PNG

Above: Mohamed Salah’s chances created (21) over the last five matches.

The Reds face Everton in Saturday’s early kick-off with Frank Lampard’s charges yet to register a clean sheet this term.

The Toffees rank fourth-worst for shots inside the box conceded (52) and third-worst for expected goals conceded (xGC) after five Gameweeks.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been sold by 100,000+ FPL managers with confidence in Liverpool’s rear-guard wavering after one clean sheet over the last five matches.

However, the West Derby native’s 71st-minute withdrawal against Newcastle bodes well for a start in Gameweek 6 – and the full-back’s underlying numbers are promising.

Alexander-Arnold has created 12 chances, more than any other defender, and has taken a team-leading 17 corners across the opening five rounds.

In terms of clean sheet prospects, Everton have blanked just once this season, against Chelsea in Gameweek 1, accruing an expected goal every 82.7 minutes.

However, Everton demonstrate dead-ball weakness conceding 24 attempts from set-plays, with only Bournemouth ranking worse, and joint third-worst for headed goal attempts conceded (17) this season.

Furthermore, Everton have conceded 21 chances from their left flank – ranking fourth-worst this season – an area of zonal weakness that both Alexander-Arnold and Salah can exploit.

This gets said often, but it's true. It's also a lot easier to see if you don't track rank changes for each player's returns:

Almost none of the 10 million teams will have your exact captain, starting XI and subs order in any given week. Your team is a differential in itself, and it's the team's points that count in rank

    3. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 3 months ago

      Dalot, second sub: 5.2%
      Dasilva, third sub: 9.9%
Everybody else is 15% and above, with Toney being the lowest in my XI with 15.2%

First sub is now Andreas (25%), who came in with 1 FT for GW6 to replace... Rodrigo (32% pre-injury)

GW7 FT will probably be Perisic (29%) to James (37%)

The Knights Template is my comrade

Too many good nailed strikers for me to take this risk, especially since I'd never cap him over Haaland. Not enough upside when we have Toney, Isak and Mitrovic at that price point

      1. KevsHolidayFund
        • 8 Years

Was genius last fixture, can't buy any of the strikers you mentioned for the same price.

Bernardo (since he decided to stay), Foden and Gundogan. Man City attackers always look good when they're on the pitch. They get outscored in FPL by being off the pitch too often, especially if you won't cap 'em

Yes. Alvarez scored two brilliant goals in his first start since joining the team many months ago. Will he start often enough to take your third striker spot?

          1. KevsHolidayFund
            • 8 Years

I would argue that teams not 'big at the back' have the space for a 6.4 striker who is benchable other options for such teams are to upgrade 4.5 midfielders to highly owned templates. It's simply risk/reward. There is a chance he will take the RF spot. possibly stay ahead of the template curve?

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 7 Years

Just a reminder of who he's competing with for a start: Haaland, Bernardo, Mahrez, Foden, Grealish, Palmer. Probably in that order

Heck, the reason he's popular right now is that people expect Haaland to be rested, in which case Pep has been quoted as saying Julian will play

It's a very big gamble that might only pay off in one GW, in a spot with safe alternatives who are doing very well

If you're convinced, of course, I can only wish you the best. Just expressing my opinion and observation

I totally agree. It's a high risk strategy. Worked last week. The dice could land on brennan Johnson this week. Calculated risks make the game fun, however I concur with the statistical approach also 🙂

2 FTs to swap Archer for Toney/Mitro seems grand. Nobody else under 7 million has the points potential those two do. Maybe even get a 5.0 mid in Nunes so you get decent bench cover

Will save me a lot of transfers down the line since a playing bench allows patience. May consider upgrading Patterson to Fofana next week to add some steel to(would need to free up 0.3 somehow though)..

It'll definitely be an interesting time to see what happens to the template, with Arsenal having a tough run too around the same time. Will people drop from 3x Liverpool and Arsenal to 2 each, or maybe less? Or will they keep and hope? Will Salah or Jesus be dropped by a lot, in games that may be more open than most and may be good for them?

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 7 Years
            3 years, 3 months ago

            Definitely keeping Salah

Arsenal is a headache, as they're my route to these assets: Mitrovic (Jesus GW8), Maddison (Gross GW9), Zaha (Martinelli GW10)

That point about open games really flips fixture difficulty on its head, but oh well 😀

Holding the likes of TAA, Salah, Martinelli and Jesus will become exciting during that period since most would get rid of WC/for other shiny toys which is understandable . Can see loads of goals in those games.. so while clean sheets may be an issue(will bench Saliba who i got at 4.5 and will rely on TAA attacking returns) i think those of us that continue patiently holding them will be richly rewarded.

One of the players that's really impressed me this season is Aaronson. Once Gross crosses 6 million I'l strongly consider Gross to Aaronson to save up cash(to upgrade 4.0 to Fofana). There is also a hidden bonus to owning Aaronson..

He has great fixtures right up until GW 15 except for
    GW 8(mun), GW 11(ARS) and GW 14(liv)

Well, guess who does have great fixtures to cover him?

    Andreas ..

    GW8(nfo), GW11(BOU), GW14(EVE)

Those are quite possibly the best fixtures of the season!

This Aaronson and Andreas combo could well see me through up until WC16. I have wanted to play Andreas a bit more and this gives me proper reason to 🙂

Their combined fixtures from GW7 to GW15 are
NFO, nfo, AVL, NEW, BOU, AVL, FUL, EVE, BOU

They could well punch above their low price tags with those fixtures 🙂

2 Bournemouth, 2 nfos, 2 AVL and 1 EVE could actually see this combo match up with players priced a couple million above their price tags. Allows me to play Andreas more often too which is something I want to do in the easier fixtures

You could even throw in NECO to cover that slightly tough NEW fixture with WOL which is the only time I'd want to play him after BOU. Those 3 rotating for 1 spot could be fantastic value

I have him and love having him, obviously quite different players but he reminds me of ASM a little, every time he gets on the ball he likes to run at defenders and he's an exciting pick because he's fun to watch. Was very unlucky not to have a goal and assist from the first 2 games but he's been ticking over nicely since then and showing he's worth having

As someone who watches a lot of Leeds .. he has slowly become my favourite player. The word talisman is thrown around too often.. but he is theirs. He ll be Leeds top fpl scorer for me.. every week i try getting him in and every week gross has a good fixture. Next week they finally have a similarly easy fixture ie Gross with bou and Aaronson with NFO.. so maybe i can finally make the swap since il have 2 FTs.

Just look at those fixtures for Aaronson/Andreas and neco together..
NFO, nfo, AVL, WOL, BOU, AVL, FUL, EVE, BOU.. i could easily get a 6 PPG from those games at such a low price lol. Feels like I've stumbled onto gold

Plus it's so much more fun rotating 3 players and watching all 3 play instead of having just a Harrison/Rodrigo type every week who is too expensive to bench 🙂

I'd be very surprised if he starts given Firmino's form but also for this reason. He's going to be targeted by most defenders for a while trying to wind him up and he'll know that, so it's about whether he can put this behind him as a silly incident and make sure it doesn't happen again or not. He's played with and against far bigger wind-up merchants than Andersen so maybe it was just a weird one-off but we'll certainly find out if it was that or if Liverpool have a bit of a Morelos on their hands
