The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League (UCL) begins on Tuesday – and so does the competition’s official Fantasy game.

We’ll have plenty of coverage on UCL Fantasy over the next day in preparation for the big kick-off, as well as articles throughout the season.

Here, one of our Pro Pundits, FPL Milanista (aka Obay), shares some expert tips on the game. Obay knows what he’s talking about, too, with finishes of 141st and 31st in the last two seasons.

The FFS Pro Pundits 31

The most prestigious club football competition is now only few hours away, and it’s this time of the year that we start talking about the UCL Fantasy game.

If you are new to this game, it would be highly advisable to go through Neale’s article that was published a few days ago as he provided a very detailed piece that explains the main features of the game and its similarities as well as differences to FPL.

In this article, I would like to focus on few strategies that I’d advise you to incorporate into your game, which could prove handy and allow you to reap significant rewards in this season’s competition.

BEING AGGRESSIVE

First of all, you need to know that the UCL competition is based on 13 Gameweeks (unlike 38 Gameweeks in FPL), and if that hints at anything, it clearly shows that being an aggressive manager in picking your squad is the way to go. By aggressive, I mean you have to put enough study and play the fixtures, apply chips early on (will be discussed later), as well as not fearing any double/triple-ups.

FIXTURES

Let us first talk about fixtures, as fixtures are king in these kind of Fantasy games. The UCL includes Europe’s elite teams, as well as second-tier clubs, all across the continent, and this is enough to create huge gaps in team levels and offer us opportunities that need to be properly utilized if we are aiming at a strong finish. Imagine an FPL Gameweek where Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea play teams that are possibly not as good as the 20th-ranked Premier League team? We would be all over them, and that is the case here as well – in the group stages, at least.

CHIPS

The group stages are key. That is where you need to be so aggressive and where all chips must be played, in my honest opinion. This is again due to the fact that this is the round where we should expect huge results from big teams as they face the less fortunate teams in their group. As teams start getting knocked out, the gap between the remaining teams lessens and the lower tier teams will disappear, hence an overall reduced opportunity to score big on a Wildcard/Limitles.

From my first look at the fixtures, there is no obvious best strategy, however, I am quite sure that my chip strategy will be to use the Wildcard just before Gameweek 3 and the Limitless chip in either Gameweek 2 or Gameweek 5. The Wildcard is usually best used just before Gameweek 3 as that allows you to target the Gameweek 3 and 4 fixtures in one hit as they are identically the same, while big teams who already qualified by Gameweek 6 will rotate heavily in that round and it makes the use of the Limitless chip less appealing.

The obvious advantage in using the Limitless chip in Gameweek 2 is that it allows you to focus your attention on Gameweek 1 fixtures only when creating your initial squad, hence not worrying about the difficulty of fixtures beyond that stage. However, I do think that the majority of the teams that we will be looking to target in this chip are playing at home in Gameweek 5, not Gameweek 2.

In case you decided to go with a Wildcard in Gameweek 3, Limitless in Gameweek 5 strategy, then you will have to take into account the first two fixtures (Gameweeks 1 and 2) for all teams when selecting your squad, with teams like Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea, and probably Tottenham Hotspur catching the eye here. Another good plan for people implementing this strategy is to bring in Barcelona’s assets for Gameweek 1 with a pre-defined plan to switch them to PSG/Inter players using the two free transfers.

THE SPLIT ACROSS TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY

One of the key points that barely gets talked about is the split of players across Tuesdays and Wednesdays. With manual substitutions in place, and although this is not a crystal clear method, statistically and from my own experience, it is much better to have more players playing on the earlier day (Tuesday) as this allows you to see more points to know whom to keep and whom to manually substitute. The fewer Tuesday players you have, the more tricky decisions that you have to make on the next day, and sometimes you may have to substitute a 4-5 pointer which could turn out to be a bad decision as your Wednesday player fails to even match it.

There is no need to be obsessed by this point as in its own, it doesn’t turn a great pick bad simply because he plays on a later date. However, I do tend to always pick the earlier day player when I’m 50/50 between two or more assets. To put that into context, a squad of 9-10 Tuesday players and 5-6 Wednesday players is probably the ideal mix that I would like to enter the season with. This can also be an 11/4 mix if I am quite sure that I will be using a chip in Gameweek 2, as teams’ fixture alternate (a team playing on Tuesday in Gameweek 1 will play on Wednesday in Gameweek 2, and vice versa).

CAPTAINCY

Another key piece of advice that I would like to share here is captaincy and its importance in UCL Gantasy. Again, this is a concise competition and any lost captaincy points could kill what you would have assumed to be a decent week.

Therefore, one of the main strategies that you must implement, both in your starting squad as well as in your future transfers, is to ensure that the best captain choice in each matchday (both Tuesday and Wednesday) is in your team. This ensures that you are securing at least the points of the most explosive assets of the round.

Does this necessarily mean that we should only captain the obvious choice every day? Not really, as I do sometimes fancy a differential captain on a Tuesday, especially if I know that my best captaincy option on Wednesday is capable of rescue if needed. So again, it’s all about risk vs reward but with manual substitutions/captaincy changes, the game encourages some bold moves in one` way or another.

That’s it for now. Please be reminded that the UCL Fantasy deadline is not over until the first game of the week kicks off, and this means that we will definitely have some line-ups on hand before finalizing our squads – look at them and try to maybe pick up that explosive differential, especially that you already know that even if he fails, you will get a chance to substitute him with a player on your bench.

Good luck everyone, and hope you all smash it in Gameweek 1!

Walker/Cucu + Kane > Robertson + a striker e.g. Mitro for a 1 week punt before wc to get Kane back in?

Yeah, I started with him and sold as well. Which was the right call at the time. If he starts being consistent, bringing him in again will be the right call.

Do you expect a midfielder to 6.5m to be consistent? Thats FPL gold then, and everyone would have him.

This is Rashford we're talking about, a guy who had 11G+11A in 2020/21, 17G+8A in 2019/20 and 10G+7A in 2018/19. It's not like we're talking about Joelinton in here. He could revive his career this season and actually be gold. But personally, it's still a wait and watch for me.

I think Arteta's subs made sense under the circumstances. If the game played out at 2-1, the story would be that Arsenal lost the game in the boxes and weren't clinical enough.

He needed to get at least one of ESR and Nketiah onto the pitch, as they are the most clinical goal scorers Arsenal has right now. Getting them both on the field, along with Vieira, an assist king, could have resulted in a big swing, so kudos to Arteta for rolling the dice.

    Ramsdale
    White Saliba Gabriel
    Saka Vieira Xhaka ESR Martinelli
    Jesus Nketiah

Arsenal actually have a strong bench, and it makes sense to use it to your advantage in a high-intensity game. Lokonga as DM was never ideal. And Viera and ESR are fresh technical players to help keep control of the midfield.

The issue was more the speed at which they were able to adapt to 3-at-the-back on the night, particularly in that first minute, so perhaps they need more practice there.

But if there's any narrative to back, I'd say it's that the game was lost more from the transfer window, not signing a quality DM.

Did you watch this analysis? https://youtu.be/iI84ZMaEOOo

He went for a wild system at the end to try and get something. Bielsa refers to them as 'systems of desperation'. As JJ says, if it works you're a genius, if not it doesn't matter.

      It was worth a go.

I've seen it yeah. I don't tend to like these TifoIRL videos though tbh. I like his attitude about it not really mattering. I don't really see what makes the system wild, tbh, as 95% of the patterns and principles have been trained over time before the match. And the 'desperation' part just comes from having no DM imo.

It's an extremely good channel. I know a little myself from when I was working on coaching badges and these guys know modern tactics better than anyone I've seen.

Modern teams usually penetrate with 5, and prepare with 5, in a 235, or 325 attacking shape. That helps protect against counter attacks, and causes horizontal overload to the backline (5 v 4). Arteta was in an unusual 334 formation, it left very little protection for counters with the central 3 pushed forwards.

          But was worth a go.

          1. Deulofail
            • 9 Years
            3 years, 3 months ago

They talk sense and nonsense in equal measure, but that's still a better ratio than most. The videos could be done in about 2 mins but the IRL format stretches them to 10-15 mins, and loses the accuracy and quality of the information. And the channel has a diabolical understanding of stats and graphs, it's frustrating to watch sometimes.

I do think they have a great brand, though, and I really like the people. That's why they can afford to be lax on other things and stretch out their content so we spend more time with them. But the content isn't very information-rich imho.

The 334 formation thing is nonsense in my view. Martinelli left-back in a 334? Yeah okay! I could go on, but it's kind of pointless to argue about number-number-number ways of writing football tactics.

            1. Piggs Boson
              • 14 Years

I thought it was very dense. He talks fast, and it's all critical info. But opinions!

334 was the attacking shape, not the formation, I misspoke.

I don't agree. With positional play, plenty of space in the attack was taken up by players you would say were in the midfield 3. In particular, ESR was frequently part of a 5-line or M/W-zigzag. So you could say the attacking shape was 325. Again it's a bit silly to argue. My only real point is that it wasn't exactly a crazy, desperate new system. The desperation, if anything, was in the 3-way swap and removing Lokonga, but both are understandable imo

they made no sense at all. Arsenal were the better team, they should have kept doing what they had been and it may have come (it may not have, but that's football).

The subs he made were the kind of subs you make when you are two behind.

He handed United the game on a plate.

I think more likely it wouldn't have come than would, with 15 mins left, tiring players, and United moving more towards absorbing pressure and countering.

Arteta's moves were proactive to try and swing the odds a little more in Arsenal's favour. He saw a chance to completely dominate in the final part of the match and tried to take it and reduce the number of counter attacks.

I'm sure they've been rehearsing things like this with ESR and Vieira able to slot in in 2 or 3 'positions' each. To say they made no sense at all is hyperbole in it's most useless form. You're not going to convince anyone like that! There are pros and cons to everything. Try to find some positives mate 😀

          I'm somewhere in the middle.

As a fan there is nothing worse than having a manager who isnt prepared to roll the dice.

I think the question is whether the players are currently good enough to adapt during a game in the way arteta wants them to.

          It will come.

I mean football is a game of opinions...

but it looked like a desperation move when the position they were in wasn't even that bad...

Arsenal were dominating the ball, and had been caught once on the counter. The substitutions removed all stability and played in to the hands of United's counter attacking players.

Just seemed like an unnecessary panic which tarnished an otherwise good performance.

Yeah I agree with this in general. Maybe with a few more mins to stabilize, we would be praising the genius move. Or maybe the players need a bit more game time before being thrown in like this. Each of those players can be a game-changer though. And there's value in doing something the opponent isn't suspecting. And also bringing new energy onto the pitch. We are looking at it from an Arsenal view and a defeated view, after all.

Losing love for Perisic already, Sessegnon getting far too many minutes. Perisic upcoming:

    Man City - bad fixture
    Marseille - start
    Leicester - benched
    Lisbon - start
    Arsenal - bad fixture

    Etc.

Double up with Sess? That's what I'm thinking of actually. Next 2 obviously not good for CS but I'd play them anyway & still plenty of juicy fixtures mixed in (LEI EVE bou lee etc.)

Problem with both Perisic and Sess is that it's likely they'll either start or get a 1 point cameo. With the 5 sub rule I expect both of them to feature in every game in some capacity where fit.

Personally I'd stay clear of the Spurs fullbacks unless there's an injury and one is nailed to start every game

Ahhh slightly. But he is a counter attacking player. His good performances will likely come in games where Villa are deeper.

I imagine you will bench him in the games he performs!

Fixtures look so much tougher this season. I’ve had 2FT and nearly burned twice already this season because there isn’t much to go after. Although maybe I should as I’m rank 250k even though I think my team is very good, no concerns with any player.

Eg Rashford away to Palace, I can’t see a haul there. City have Spurs. Leicester would usually be good for a punt on Maddy/Barnes who have Villa at home but they’re rooted to the foot of the table and potentially in one of those spirals only resolved by a sacking. Arsenal v Everton - I can see Everton getting something. Chelsea are away at Fulham and can’t keep a CS and Mitro has scored in 4 successive league games. Meh.

WC team. What do you think?

    Guaita
    TAA - James - Trippier - _________
    Salah - Martinelli - _________
    Haaland - Mitrovic - Jesus

    Ward - Andreas - Bailey - N.Williams

    Blanks will be:

    a) Cancelo and Rashford

    b) Walker and Antony

If I was wildcarding, I would avoid Salah. So expensive, needs to be consistently delivering hauls and be a reliable captain to justify it. I would have Kane instead (he is the best captain option in a few upcoming GWs, he could go mental against Leicester).

I would drop Jesus personally. Some strong individual performances, but 1 haul in 6 favourable fixtures. Would prefer Mitrovic or Toney.

I'd agree with Kane over Jesus. Consistently returning and a good captaincy shout for a couple of gws.

Jesus will have some tough fixtures coming up and better forward options are presenting itself. He's also on 3YC and picking them up more frequently. His price hasn't skyrocketed so even if there is a need to bring him back later, it wouldn't mean a massive adjustment

on a wildcard I'd really go Haaland, Mitrovic and Toney.

fixtures are fine and keep some cash if Nunez looks threatening or even Antony or back to Jesus.

I'd get 4 decent midfielders and play 3-4-3.

      Pope in goal.
