The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League (UCL) got underway last week – and so did the competition’s official Fantasy game.

With prizes dished out every Matchday, UCL Fantasy also offers an incentive for managers to belatedly enter a team even if they failed to do so in Matchday 1.

Our Champions League content continues this week as FPL Milanista (aka Obay) shares his thoughts on whether now is the right time to play the Limitless chip.

ENTER A UCL FANTASY TEAM HERE

UCL Fantasy: Milanista

UEFA Champions League action is back underway this Tuesday, and how eager we are to tinker and build upon what was a considerably high-scoring Matchday 1.

Talking about my Matchday 1, it was an incredibly amazing opening midweek in which I managed to score 129 points, chiefly thanks to a 40-pointer from captain Alex Grimaldo, which puts me at a worldwide rank of 372nd.

So what’s next? This is a short article that will hopefully help you decide upon the path you will pursue in the following weeks.

LIMITLESS IN MATCHDAY 2?

Given there was no Premier League action over the weekend, most Fantasy managers had the UCL Fantasy to fall back on, and to re-emphasize what my previous article covered, adopting a strategy is very much essential in this short-life Fantasy game.

I’ve always been a fan of Wildcarding in Matchday 3, as this approach offers an opportunity to aggressively target Matchday 3 and 4 fixtures in one hit (the fixtures are identical, other than the home/away sides reversing). My initial squad was built just for a single Matchday and my chip strategy was always to activate Limitless in Matchday 2 before hitting the Wildcard button next week.

However, I had a more detailed look at the Matchday 2 fixtures and started to question the Limitless approach, especially given that many of the most explosive Fantasy assets for this round are playing on Wednesday. This factor needs to be properly weighed up as it’s mainly risk-related and the potential of scoring big on a Limitless in Matchday 2 is still relatively high, with favourable fixtures for teams like Real Madrid, Manchester City, PSG, AC Milan, Inter, and Chelsea.

The question is: will there be another opportunity to benefit more from such a valuable chip? Possibly. Looking back at the teams I just mentioned, five out of those six clubs are playing on Wednesday, which again makes the use of this chip less appealing to an extent.

WILDCARD IN MATCHDAY 2?

So what’s next? For me, I am quite sure I’ll need to use a chip this Matchday as my current set-up is far from decent going forward. However, if before I was 75%/25% leaning towards Limitless in Matchday 2, I’m more at 65%/35% heading towards a normal Wildcard right now, with the intention to use the Limitless in Matchday 3 or 4.

People may point out that even on a Wildcard, we will be facing an issue picking up a reasonable number of Tuesday assets. But be reminded that by taking a Wildcard approach you are now forced to use your budget wisely. Taking few “cheaper” punts on teams like Porto, Inter, Sporting, Marseille etc is normally acceptable, unlike in Limitless where you must try to build the optimal squad that consists of the 13 most explosive assets.

TEAM NEWS WATCH

Lastly, I’d like to remind everyone that the UCL Fantasy deadline is not over until the first game of the week kicks off, and this means that we will definitely have some line-ups to hand before we finalise our squads – people who waited till the last minute to jump on the likes of Raphael Guerreiro, Marco Reus and Jude Bellingham last week will get my point here.

There is always something to look at and consider when such line-ups emerge, and given the lack of Tuesday quality on paper, the Inter, Spurs and Sporting line-ups may be quite worth looking at. Remember that you can always substitute your Tuesday player with one playing on Wednesday as long as he doesn’t get sent off.

Good luck, everyone. I hope it will be another outstanding week for those who had a strong start in Matchday 1 and be the week of recovery for those who struggled.

I think FPL should introduce a new chip in the coming weeks. You can play it any time before Charles III is crowned as king but you can only use it to buy/sell players from the Manchester clubs.

And it shall be called "The Coronations Treat".

Assuming the 3 London fixtures are off this weekend (TOT v LEI, BRE v ARS, CHE v LIV) would this be the ideal GW8 wildcard?

    Pope - (Iversen)
    Cancelo - Trippier - Dalot - N.Williams - (R.James)
    Zaha - Rashford - De Bruyne - Andreas - (L.Diaz)
    Haaland - Mitrovic - (Toney)

odd decision from Levy to bring Richarlison to Spurs. He isn't good for the Spurs brand and damaging to the club reputation. Then again who said Levy is good at running a football club 😉

Richarlison can be an arse on the pitch but I don't know what you mean otherwise. He's actually a very humble guy off the pitch, his reaction to his goals last week (hugging his father and mother in the crowd and crying) says a lot about him. When he got his very first deal with a boot/clothing brand, the first thing he did was go back home, pack up all his clothes and hand them out to the kids / poor people in his home town. He's been very charitable and gets involved in his community a lot, and he's supposedly really quiet and awkward off the pitch but is liked by most around him.

Depends what you want with your WC and how good your GW8 team would be.

Not looking to own any Liverpool players myself, for instance, and could only field 7 players in GW8 with FTs. May as well get 11 with the WC with James on the bench and maybe one or two others who are blanking.

    5. Digital-Real
      • 8 Years

no need to WC if folk have plans to remove Liverpool players for their tough fixture run. Sell Salah and TAA and you have enough funds to do a mini WC.
Bring Salah and TAA back on a WC and when they're cheaper. Of course this means Wildcarding in GW12, which is what I'm strongly considering.

      1. Deulofail

This is the alternative I'm considering too, but probably only in the case that only one of the Brentford or Chelsea games is postponed

assuming most of the London games at the weekend are cancelled, considering Arsenal's game on Thursday has been postponed. Then where does that leave you?

            • 9 Years
            3 years, 2 months ago

Yeah, it depends which games, as I said. If all 3 games are postponed (and no others), I am very likely to WC as I can get only 7 players.

If one of the Brentford Arsenal or Chelsea Liverpool games goes ahead, I will likely have XI with FT, but perhaps take a hit to remove 2 Arsenal or 2 Liverpool players, and take out a couple more before WC12

Not sure what all the PL teams meeting together achieves - surely whether each match is on or not is on a case by case basis?

What a mess Premier League have caused. Missed opportunity for powerful tribute to the Queen broadcast worldwide last weekend and they could have cancelled week 8 fixtures treating all clubs equally rather than this hotchpotch of games we will end up with

i'm not so disgruntled games have been called off. FPL was fast becoming boring this season with a strong template, the fun wasn't there. This way, the template is dismantled and more FPL managers pick players outside the top 6.

Um, I’m going to say it: I don’t think it’s fair practice for FPL to play the week with cancellations of the London games. So I’m saying my piece to just play the games or cancel another week. Maybe I’ll spend time on something that has no to royal affairs instead. These cancellations are signeof a fetishistic society.

Yes, I think when Mozart's Requiem in D minor was completed in 1792, it was delivered to Count Franz von Walsegg. He was the man who originally commissioned the piece to form part of a Requiem service in commemoration of the anniversary of his wife's death, or something like that.

Well yes PL first for last weekend, and then FPL is they have a partial week on top of it. Admittedly might feel differently if they hadn’t so royally flubbed this weekend.

Sure if they must cancel, do it. I am saying ahead of time that playing a gameweek for FPL without the full week of matches is not fair to those bothering to play the game. But it’s like only my opinion man

Team dependent of course, but you need to use WC in the next 8 weeks anyway, so makes sense to use it now and retain your FH chip for the 2nd half of the season if you can make changes on a WC that significantly improves your teams for GW8 and beyond.

Not seen many (or maybe any) WC drafts with Perisic recently. He was all the rage at start of season. Presumably worried about minutes, but when he plays he's good value. No takers?

with Sess in such good form, Peri is still a rotation risk and at 5.5m expensive to own if not a sure starter in league.

Difficult to undo when fans, police etc all stood down. Cannot see it being undone particularly given number of fans that would be travelling from London by train to get there.

As a Spurs season ticket holder, I've just now received an email from the club about the Leicester game being available for ticket exchange and sharing.

It is the same generic email normally sent around 7-10 days before a home match. No mention of policing or the queen's passing on this email though. But that I've received an email within a week from the game gives me a little bit more confidence the game may still go ahead or at least that's what the club's intention is

Still best to wait for official news from the PL whether the games go ahead but thought I'd share this with you lot anyway

I think he was referring to the Spurs ticket office. Although if you normally receive it 7-10 days in advance, that suggests to me that it's been sent following discussions, no?

            • 7 Years

Maybe. Think it's still best to wait for an official announcement though.

I get the emails to say that the ticket exchange is open should I wish to list my ticket for sale (I'm not in the UK at the moment and haven't been for the last year so this is helpful for me).

Don't think they would send an email 5 days before the game if they weren't confident of it not going ahead. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if the ticket office made a faux pas.

Difference is he's leading the league in assists at the minute, without being "involved" in a 9-0 mauling.
