The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League (UCL) got underway last week – and so did the competition’s official Fantasy game.

With prizes dished out every Matchday, UCL Fantasy also offers an incentive for managers to belatedly enter a team even if they failed to do so in Matchday 1.

Our Champions League content continues this week as FPL Milanista (aka Obay) shares his thoughts on whether now is the right time to play the Limitless chip.

ENTER A UCL FANTASY TEAM HERE

UCL Fantasy: Milanista

UEFA Champions League action is back underway this Tuesday, and how eager we are to tinker and build upon what was a considerably high-scoring Matchday 1.

Talking about my Matchday 1, it was an incredibly amazing opening midweek in which I managed to score 129 points, chiefly thanks to a 40-pointer from captain Alex Grimaldo, which puts me at a worldwide rank of 372nd.

So what’s next? This is a short article that will hopefully help you decide upon the path you will pursue in the following weeks.

LIMITLESS IN MATCHDAY 2?

Given there was no Premier League action over the weekend, most Fantasy managers had the UCL Fantasy to fall back on, and to re-emphasize what my previous article covered, adopting a strategy is very much essential in this short-life Fantasy game.

I’ve always been a fan of Wildcarding in Matchday 3, as this approach offers an opportunity to aggressively target Matchday 3 and 4 fixtures in one hit (the fixtures are identical, other than the home/away sides reversing). My initial squad was built just for a single Matchday and my chip strategy was always to activate Limitless in Matchday 2 before hitting the Wildcard button next week.

However, I had a more detailed look at the Matchday 2 fixtures and started to question the Limitless approach, especially given that many of the most explosive Fantasy assets for this round are playing on Wednesday. This factor needs to be properly weighed up as it’s mainly risk-related and the potential of scoring big on a Limitless in Matchday 2 is still relatively high, with favourable fixtures for teams like Real Madrid, Manchester City, PSG, AC Milan, Inter, and Chelsea.

The question is: will there be another opportunity to benefit more from such a valuable chip? Possibly. Looking back at the teams I just mentioned, five out of those six clubs are playing on Wednesday, which again makes the use of this chip less appealing to an extent.

WILDCARD IN MATCHDAY 2?

So what’s next? For me, I am quite sure I’ll need to use a chip this Matchday as my current set-up is far from decent going forward. However, if before I was 75%/25% leaning towards Limitless in Matchday 2, I’m more at 65%/35% heading towards a normal Wildcard right now, with the intention to use the Limitless in Matchday 3 or 4.

People may point out that even on a Wildcard, we will be facing an issue picking up a reasonable number of Tuesday assets. But be reminded that by taking a Wildcard approach you are now forced to use your budget wisely. Taking few “cheaper” punts on teams like Porto, Inter, Sporting, Marseille etc is normally acceptable, unlike in Limitless where you must try to build the optimal squad that consists of the 13 most explosive assets.

TEAM NEWS WATCH

Lastly, I’d like to remind everyone that the UCL Fantasy deadline is not over until the first game of the week kicks off, and this means that we will definitely have some line-ups to hand before we finalise our squads – people who waited till the last minute to jump on the likes of Raphael Guerreiro, Marco Reus and Jude Bellingham last week will get my point here.

There is always something to look at and consider when such line-ups emerge, and given the lack of Tuesday quality on paper, the Inter, Spurs and Sporting line-ups may be quite worth looking at. Remember that you can always substitute your Tuesday player with one playing on Wednesday as long as he doesn’t get sent off.

Good luck, everyone. I hope it will be another outstanding week for those who had a strong start in Matchday 1 and be the week of recovery for those who struggled.

It looks like the Category A policing games will go.

Greatly appreciate the link, Crunchie. But have to admit that I must have misunderstood the orignal post -- I thought it meant category A games would go away (not be held), but it must have meant would go ahead and be played. I'll have to follow closely here to see which London area games will in fact be held (unless only Arsenal/Brentford would be classed as category A around London). Cheers.

Better for all games to go ahead ❓ guess it’s irrelevant now as we know what’s happening but I would argue it would be better to allow all games to go ahead.

From the Guardian (probably why MAN UTD - LEEDS is OFF)

Every match requires a safety certificate which has to be agreed by the local Safety Advisory Group, and then is signed off by its chairman. The SAG is made up of members from the respective football club, the local police, fire brigade, ambulance service and council.

If any party can't provide a service that would ensure the safety and security of the event then it would be up to the Safety Advisory Group chairperson to decide whether that event could go ahead.

The reason why matches could be called off this weekend is if the emergency services feel they would be too stretched and that they could not provide the staff, and by extension the safety and security of those attending. The SAG chairperson, who is normally somebody senior from the local council, will decide, with every party's agreement, as with Wembley – the FA agreed it wasn't sensible in the circumstances for England's friendly against Holland to be played, given the current circumstances.

How is each game assessed with regard to safety?
We grade all football matches on a basis of categories. Some fixtures are police free and we don't need to attend or have any involvement with them – such as the lower league clubs where only hundreds or maybe thousands are attending. Those are categorised as stewards only and are known as "police-free, club‑stewarding".

Then there is category A, effectively a low‑risk game with minimal police, maybe none inside the stadium, just on the outskirts. Category B is medium risk; C, which is for high-risk fixtures, and there is C+, for increased risk, which is obviously games like, say, Manchester United v Manchester City, or Tottenham against Arsenal.

In London we have a scoring system, a matrix, in which we value the amount of people attending the game, the animosity and history of the two sides and the intelligence provided, and it comes out almost with a recommendation.

The category of a game can change depending on the time of the year and the time of kick-off. If you reduce the category then you reduce the number of police required, and this reduces cost.

How many officers are needed for the different category games?
You can't say a specific number. It really depends on what club you are talking about. A cat‑B game in Manchester between two teams from there or between teams from London in the capital can be totally different. A cat‑A fixture could be as low as a dozen officers. A cat‑B could be as many as 50; and a C as many as 200 or 300.

What do police do at games and in relation to match stewards?
Ultimately, safety and security is down to the football club and for that their safety officer is in control. The police commander is in charge of police resources, though, and he and the safety officer sit side by side in the control room and work together to ensure overall safety.

But the safety officer has responsibility for anything inside that event. This might mean they turn to the commander and say: "Could you send some officers to that incident as the stewards can't deal with it."

Stewards effectively police the inside of football stadiums. The police support the stewards in that. If a situation went from policing a normal event to disorder breaking out, the police take primacy, but again they would work closely with the club.

Every club has protocols, contingencies for every eventuality. They practise them through table-top exercises. So if there is a suspect package or a bomb hoax or if there is a need to get a ground empty quickly, every steward and police officer knows where they fit into that model and the role they take on.

It is all intelligence led and follows from the conversation between the club and the police regarding whether the risk of a match needs to be increased so that then the number of police and stewards on duty increases.

For some cat‑A games in London you can have around 150 police on duty but actually policing the match would only be 50. The rest would monitor those coming out of the Tube stations etc. But there could be 700 stewards. For every 250 fans one steward is required – that's set in stone.

How do the different police forces co-ordinate?
Every time there is a game, British Transport police, the visiting police and the local police are involved. There are long-standing relationships between all of the forces.

Everybody is linked in. If the BTP cannot ensure its side of the bargain then that puts pressure on the whole chain. If, say, the St John's Ambulance and the London Ambulance Service can't provide first aid cover for a game, well even if the police can, that game cannot go ahead.

The fixture congestion issues feel like a storm in a teacup to me. The Premier League and EFL got through a COVID shut down and last season's winter COVID carnage, they can get through this too, even if it means extending the season into June.

There's a link to a section on this website now called "SELL SALAH?"

The entire site is now clickbait.

After all that stress, I can field a full 11!

I do have 2FT so next is about deciding what to do.

Collins > Emerson Royal makes the most sense.

Will hold off Gundo > Maddison I reckon until next week as planned before her Majesty’s passing.

    Raya
    Trippier Saliba Collins Patterson Neco
    KdB Gundogan Martinelli
    Haaland(C) Jesus

    Ward Archer Diaz Sterling

If WC next week why not this week and field a strong 11?

Cuz i can field strong 11 with a -4 as it stands. And I dont want to wildcard without having postponed teams players at disposal

So what are people doing with the postponements? Free hit? Wildcard?

4 players in postponed games. Neither here nor there.

Take a hit and play 9 or wildcard ?
