With the boredom of the International break biting hard, we decided to take a look at the players with the best “Goal Involvement” per club. For the purpose of this article, Goal Involvement consists or either assisting or scoring a goal and also factors in whether the player was on the pitch when their team found their opponent’s net, a fact we managed to establish only after looking at every game of the season so far.

Using Marouanne Chamakh as a quick example, the table shows that Arsenal have scored 14 goals with him on the pitch, and of those 14, he has been involved in 4, which is 28%. Given that he’s played 586 mins so far, this means he has been involved in an Arsenal goal every 146 mins.

Theo Walcott’s fine start to the season (helped by his hat-trick against Blackpool) shows he played a part in 5 of the 8 goals Arsenal scored when he was on the pitch, which is a fantastic 62%. Before succumbing to injury, Walcott was therefore involved in an Arsenal goal every 37 minutes he was on the field.

Of all the sortable columns on the table below, perhaps the most significant is “Mins per Goal Involvement”. A couple of big performances in easy romps against lesser sides means Walcott and Salomon Kalou lead the way, but take these two out of the equation, and the order is a fair reflection of the season’s performers so far.

A surprise name up amongst the top dogs of Didier Drogba and Nani is Blackpool’s Luke Varney. He has either scored or assisted five of the seven goals his team have scored when he is on the pitch, meaning he is involved in a goal every 70 minutes, almost on a par with Nani. The high ranking of the likes of Moussa Dembele, Johan Elmander and Peter Odemwingie show how, outwith the Bonus Point allocation, there are budget forwards consistently producing the goods so far this season.

Another point of interest is Man United’s Wayne Rooney. Rooney has dropped £0.6m so far, but when on the pitch, his rate of Goal Involvement (76 mins) is actually better than that of team mate Dimitar Berbatov. They have both been involved in the same percentage of goals (44%) but having played almost double the minutes of Rooney means Berbatov leads the way. The stats suggest that if Rooney played the same game time as the Bulgarian, he’d be the one out in front.

I see Kolarov, walcott and bosingwa are all back this month. I can just about fit them all in and would have a lovely team. All be it at the expense of Albrightion to a 4.3 midfielder.

My concern though is the game time bosingwa would get and the impact fabregas would have on walcott's output.

I do fancy a bit of Kolarov. He has a hammer of a left foot & is clearly not afraid of long shots.

Yeah I did read somewhere (probably here) that at Lazio he liked to get forward a lot. According to his wiki, he had 6 goals from 82 appearances at Lazio.

Only 6 in 82 for Lazio. Recall a Lazio fan on here saying he just loved to shoot. He likes a free kick too. Where he falls in that hierarchy remains to be seen.

Could be another John Arne Riise type player - he scored 31 in 234 games for Liverpool. Mancini was saying recently that his team would play more attacking football once his flying full backs were included - expect Kolarov and Boateng to push forward, with Barry, de Jong and Toure covering.

    Kolarov - O'Shea - Bosingwa (Elmohamady,Jara)
    Fabregas - VDV - Nani - Adam - Barton

Bosingwa will surely have to fight for his place in the first team. Fresh back from injury, so possibly eased into the squad.

Barton isn't a bad choice. BP judges like him. Although we now know Nolan is the first choice penalty taker of the two.

Oh, for those who didn't come on here yesterday I have a small betting tip for tonight.

Sweden +1 Asian Handicap, odds 1.8 or above.

For anyone unfamiliar with Asian Handicap it means that you win your bet if Sweden wins or if there is a draw, and get a refund on your money if Holland win by 1 goal.

MARSEILLE V Zilna, BAYERN MUNICH V Cluj, ROMA v Basel, MAN UTD v west brom, ARSENAL v birmingham, FRANCE v luxembourg, scotland V SPAIN, ENGLAND v montenegro, san marino v MOLDOVA, SWITZERLAND v wales, liechtenstein v CZECH REPUBLIC, kazakhstan v GERMANY, ARMENIA v andorra
Obviously the ones in capitals are my selections - individually they are all extremely heavy favourites the narrowest odds being Spain at 2/5.

I wouldn't be too happy about the Switzerland one... They're pretty poor and Wales do actually have some decent players.

As for San Marino vs Moldova, I don't really have much insight on that!

Yeah the Swiss one - well its hard to see Wales getting a result in Switzerland, they'll be distracted by all the toblerone and cuckoo clocks.
As for San Marino, there's only 15 people in the country - so they are Europes whipping boys (after Scotland of course) - whereas Moldova are a powerhouse of world football

      1) If you want to get the most points - buy players you think will score highly.

      2) If you want to get the highest team value - buy players that you think will score highly, and jump on as many bandwagons as you can as soon as they start.

Option 1 is almost always better.

Value is really only an issue if you need to suddenly bring in an expensive player coming into form.

As your current team must be doing ok to have the highest point, over time this should result in a steady price rise.

When making changes it's always a good idea to think about the price implications but realistically too late in the WC window to really make money out of trading. Should now be focussing on getting together a team you are goign to be happy with for the next couple on months.

Another chance to play the value game when the transfer window opens again.

Fun fact: I won a game 4-0 last night, I even won another game too ...and then lost about five, but that's not important.

Slowly, slowly, catchy monkey - I'll be good at this game by the time 12 comes out and everyone moves on.

I hate conceding headers and/or corners.

I'm slightly better at defending, just need to get crossing as people always seem to be perfect with theirs and then mine are always, well... overhit and cack.

They just feel too jammy and skill being less of a requisite so I feel gutted if I concede one, or harsh if I score one.

With the crossing it's all the length of time that you hold the button - quick stab for near post, decent press for centre, hold longer for far post. Angle in the left analogue stick too immediately after you release the button. I often do the little L1 and triangle to just lightly chip it over the defender and it usually pays off.
There is a bit of skill to it, you really have to be both watching your winger and watching for your striker to get that little bit of room, so its mainly getting your timing right.

Toothy Ronaldinho scored a lovely header from one for me yesterday, but other than that (for now) I try to steer clear. I'm trying to learn to defend "the Hunter S. Thompson way" right now, and I'm improving if still very fallible.

I could, just maybe, scrape together this team:

    Foster, Krul
A Cole, Kolarov, Elmo (Jara, 4M def)
