Suspensions

In this weekly article, we look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who are a caution or two away from a one-match ban.

No-one is currently suspended for Gameweek 14, with Cheikhou Doucoure (£5.0m) returning from a ban next weekend and Douglas Luiz (£4.8m) already having had his Gameweek 12 red card overturned.

We’ll update this article after West Ham United v Bournemouth this evening.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

William Saliba (£5.2m), Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) and Ivan Toney (£7.5m) are among the key Fantasy names featured above, all of them owned by over 25% of FPL managers.

Jesus and Toney being up there isn’t a mystery, sitting as they do second and joint-third for most fouls committed in 2022/23.

The 12%-owned Fabian Schar (£4.9m) joined them on the precipice in Gameweek 12, while Marc Guehi (£4.3m) reached four yellow cards for the campaign on Saturday.

A word of warning if you’re looking at Manchester United assets for their upcoming favourable run of games, as Diogo Dalot (£4.6m) and Bruno Fernandes (£9.8m) are one booking away from a ban.

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m), Neco Williams (£4.1m) and Harry Kane (£11.5m) are among the big names who are sitting slightly more comfortably one caution further back.

These players will have to avoid two bookings between now and early 2023 to swerve a one-match ban.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

The table above is taken from the Football Association website and details the cut-off points for the various yellow card thresholds.

The one we’re concerned about right now is the five-caution mark, an unwanted target that Premier League players will have to avoid for their team’s first 19 league matches of the season.

Following the wave of postponements over the last month, that is no longer Gameweek 19.

Team19th fixture falls in…
ArsenalGameweek 21
Aston VillaGameweek 20
BournemouthGameweek 20
BrentfordGameweek 20
BrightonGameweek 21
ChelseaGameweek 21
Crystal PalaceGameweek 21
EvertonGameweek 20
FulhamGameweek 20
LeedsGameweek 21

Man UtdGameweek 21
NewcastleGameweek 20
Nottm ForestGameweek 20
SouthamptonGameweek 20
SpursGameweek 20
West HamGameweek 20
WolvesGameweek 20

The above will change if there are any rearrangements of the postponed fixtures before that but there are few available windows.

A reminder: punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

I'd say #SalahOut is the better move.

At 12.1 or whatever he is he is a waste of an FPL budget. I will be getting rid.

Leeds at home feels wrong to sell. Could go Salah to Saka and Firmino to Kane for a hit I suppose.

Thanks Sammo. Yes I think I’ll reluctantly stick. Sounds like he was roughed up a bit yesterday V the Saints. Might go back to Scamacca from GW15 if he looks decent tonight. Another shocking week for me. Only a Bowen masterclass (at least a goal and an assist) can save me from a red arrow for the 3rd consecutive week. Bringing in Allison and VVD as part of my GW13 WC stung badly!

I got to 309k in GW10, then have spent 3 consecutive weeks with pretty much the bang average score, hovering between 350k and 360k for GW11-13. I'm also hoping Bowen can do bits tonight. One GI to avoid a red, two to get a nice little bump into the 200ks and up a few mini leagues. Let's go Jarrod!

    B) Salah & Solanke -> Foden & Mitrovic (-4)
    C) Salah & Dier -> KDB & Gomez (-4)
    D) Dier & Solanke -> Gomez & Mitrovic (-4)

Thinking A or D (price changes and hopefully Gomez (LEE) & Mitrovic (EVE) would outscore Dier (bou) and Solanke (TOT) by 4).

I was going to do Salah + Neco/Castagne to Saka + Cancelo for free but wondering if I should do that next week instead?

Leeds look like they’re struggling and, with 2FTs, those frees look like they might be more useful in GW15, where the fixtures are a little trickier than 14.

It’s been suggested I maybe sell Perisic this week? I’ll see how much he features in Europe in midweek.

    Hey Folks, Happy Diwali!

Thinking of removing Zaha and Mitro by gw15..best routes?

    A: Zaha >> Saka..and then Mitro >> Scamacca (in gw15)
    B: Zaha >> Saka..and then Zaha/Mitro >> Bowen/Scamacca (-4) in gw15
C: Roll FT and then take out Zaha/Mitro for free in gw15

Currently thinking this transfer plan. Anyone in same position?

    Current bench:

    Ward (vs. City - H)
    Dalot (vs. WHU - H)
    Almiron (vs. AVL - H)
    Guehi (vs. SOU - H)

Is this the time to use the bench boost? When is a good time for it otherwise?

Most common is for a DGW or after a WC so you've planned for it. Yours is pretty good though.

        🙂 Thanks.

My reasoning is this: when there is a DGW, I will probably prefer to play the Triple Captain (did anyone say Haaland?) or the FH... the question is how many DGW we might get in the second half of the season... 🙂

It's true. The BB is often the biggest anti-climax of the chips because you often take hits to make the bench anyway. So if you have a good week like yours, maybe you can just do it.

I bet a few people would have liked to use it this week, with Ward, Andreas, Trossard, Neco, Bailey etc.

          1. leop911
            • 9 Years
            3 years, 1 month ago

Yeah, and as you can not combine chips, I figure it might be a good option to use one if a good opportunity like this is served on a silver platter...

I'll be playing with that idea all week. Glad to hear I am not crazy. 🙂

    Trippier / Guehi / Romero
    Foden / Andreas / Salah / Martinelli
    Kane . Mitrovic / Haaland

    Iversen / Barnes / Castagne / Williams

    0 ITB 1 FT

    Kane Harland Brentford.

    a) Kilman > White (boring but worthy)

Does anyone else feel it is time for captaincy to be moved from the game? Haaland is autocap now and if he hauls and is you cap then it really does not have any effect on your rank.

The game is stagnating now now and it should come down to picking who you feel are the best 11 starters instead of capping a player which has broken the game and getting lucky with 10 other players.

    1. Art Vandelay
      • 15 Years
      3 years, 1 month ago

Whilst I don't disagree having a Halland PermaCap changes the game, I don't see why it makes sense to remove it. You could argue it gives you the opportunity to really roll the dice and bet against him.

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

Capping another player instead of Haaland does not really matter when Haaland is autocap for majority. If you don't cap him then it is basically fighting a losing battle.

        1. Art Vandelay
          • 15 Years

Sorry, I just don't agree at all with your interpretation.

All it tells me is that you don't want to take the additional risk of not captaining him, given his ridiculous EO.

Just captain him and move on with your life. I will be looking for the opportunity to bet against the pack. Getting rid of the option makes no sense at all to me.

    2. leop911
      • 9 Years

I do not agree. Some people in our league captained Salah over Haaland this week.

I captained Kane (18 pts) vs. Haaland (2 pts) in GW 11.

It can still be a differential.

Does it make any difference? It's a 10 player game whether you have double points for Haaland or single points for Haaland isn't it? Am i missing something?

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

Capping Haaland makes no difference to your rank. Capping another player leaves you at risk of having your rank damaged.

This game has become about capping Haaland.

Permacap situation does virtually remove the question of captaincy from the game, detrimentally I think. I would be in favour of introducing 1.5x points for VC

    6. FOO FIGHTER
      • 6 Years
      3 years, 1 month ago

I say just leave the triple cap chip in place but remove captaincy. That will make the game much more competitive.

It really is coming down to Haaland hauling and 3 to 4 of your other players needing to get decent points to have the average score.

      1. leop911
        • 9 Years
        3 years, 1 month ago

Following the same reasoning, everyone has Haaland in their team (if everyone is captaining him to the point of reviewing captaincy...)... then we might as well remove Haaland?

Having the captaincy option gives you one more possibility to take a risk and outsmart the rest (as I said before, see for example Kane vs. Haaland captain in GW11). It can become a differential. Can it backfire? Yes. But doesn't every choice in the game have that risk? Isn't that the beauty of it?

I posted a few weeks ago about this. My idea was to limit the amount of games you can captain one player e.g. 18 games per season, or not captaining the same player in consecutive weeks.
I feel this would reward forward planning and keep more managers engaged throughout the season.
The responses I got were probably 50 / 50 but I still believe something needs to change - the game has stagnated in my opinion

I quite like this idea of a limit on captaincies for one player.

It's obviously happened before when one player dominates the captaincy in FPL (Henry, Lampard/Gerrard, Ronaldo, Saurez, Salah). I don't really see a huge issue to the game as a whole, it simply makes it about the other players you have.

    What would you do here:

    Pope
    Trippier Cancelo Robo
    Foden Maddison Martineli Zaha
    Haaland Jesus Mitro

    Ward Andreas Neco Webster

    A. Zaha to Saka
    B. Maddison to Saka
    C. Maddison & Zaha to Salah & 4.5 enabler (-4) and play Andrea
    D. save

Almiron looked incredible yesterday. It's like him and Salah have gone through a body swap.

Been class all season! Bruno has really helped unlock him too! And Eddie and the excellent staff of course!

He was always a good player just needed to add more goal contributions to get the recognition he’s now getting

Another bad week, back to 1mil. Team looks OK on paper but not performing. 1FT, 0.3itb.

Thinking Kilman/Webster to a stronger 3rd defender, perhaps White or Botman?

    Guaita

    Cancelo - Tripps - Kilman
Salah - Foden - Saka - Zaha
    Haaland - Toney - Mitro
    (Ivo | Andreas - Neco - Webster)
