Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead analyses the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundits PrasZophar and FPL Harry,  FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and of course last year’s mini-league winner and overall no.2 Suvansh.

“Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a Double Gameweek!”

It’s a double edition of ‘The Great and The Good’, in the midst of Double Gameweek season written at double speed due to the rapid turnaround (…and published after the deadline). That’s a lot of doubles!

Yes, we have entered that stage of the season where spreadsheet superheroes appear, predicting the probability of twin fixtures. We then get carried away, trying to cram players into our squads because they play twice. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, plenty, if Gameweek 19 is anything to go by, with yellow cards (Aleksander Mitrovic, £7.2m), red card debuts (Joao Felix, £7.5m) and injuries after four minutes (Raheem Sterling, £9.7m).

Still, we all love them so let’s see how ‘The Great and The Good’ handled the hot twin action – probably best not to Google that!

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

The high flyer over the last two weeks has been Ben Crellin, the fixtures soothsayer himself, with a combined tally of 123 points continuing his soar up the ranks to a lofty position of 3,620th. However, FPL General and Joe were the only ones to achieve two green arrows.

So, what has Ben done right? Well, all the big decisions, like preferring Ederson (£5.4m) over Joao Cancelo (£7.2m), having triple Arsenal, Marcus Rashford (£7.0m) and, of course, he went early on Luke Shaw (£5.1m). However, he is human and owns Darwin Nunez (£8.9m), who I suspect will be exiting due to injury rumours, I just hope it wasn’t his shin.

Joe had a particularly strong Gameweek 18. Eddie Nketiah (£6.6m) was a nice little differential, although he has since sold him whilst keeping Dejan Kulusevski (£7.9m) with one eye on this week’s double. He joins Az in hoping the Swede recovers from his injury in time.

FPL General deserves a mention after being the top scorer in Gameweek 19. He has had a good start to the second-half restart, leading the way with 221 points since the World Cup and moving up 500,000 places.

Finally, the FPL Godfather himself Mark Sutherns must’ve been in fine spirits – not only did his beloved Nottingham Forest win a key game but then his gamble on Matt Doherty (£4.6m) paid off with a 14-point haul. Az must feel the warm breath on his neck as Mark is chasing down his Blackbox co-host, slowly but surely, with a gap of 83 to make up.

TRANSFERS

There has been plenty of transfer market activity over the last couple of weeks but, fortunately for the word count on this article, it can all be summarised by saying that Shaw and Mitrovic were key targets.

Away from this, Az’s rock n roll move for a goalkeeper he’d previously rallied against, Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.6m), deserves a footnote, as does the unfortunate Magnus move for Mason Mount (£7.6m), which must have made him feel like resigning from this FPL board when he didn’t show up for the first game.

Probably more interesting were those who didn’t make moves in Gameweek 19 or at least rolled a transfer with the likes of Crellin, Fabio Borges, Finn Sollie and FPL Matthew all keeping one back in preparation for the upcoming Double Gameweek 20.

TEMPLATE

The template has had a strong restart so there are just a few tweaks from last time, with the injured Reece James (£5.7m) being replaced by Shaw and Anthony Martial (£6.6m) moved on for Mitrovic.

The full details for ‘The Great and The Good’ are as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

Kepa (14), Ward (13)

Trippier (17), Cancelo (14), White (12), Shaw (11), Patterson (8)

Rashford (16), Andreas (14), Martinelli (13), Salah (11), Saka/De Bruyne (7)

Haaland (18), Mitrovic (17), Darwin (11)

CAPTAIN CALLS

Captaincy decisions over the last few weeks have thrown up a couple of surprises. Magnus decided to Triple Captain Mitrovic this week, so suffered the yellow card and suspension heartache.

The Chess Grandmaster was the only one brave enough to go against Erling Haaland (£12.2m) by putting the armband on Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) in Gameweek 18 but that also didn’t end well.

Meanwhile, Az showed his maverick side with his Andreas Pereira (£4.6m) captaincy in Gameweek 19. In the end, it equalled the popular Mitrovic pick but wasn’t enough to stop him from losing his place at the top of the captaincy points table, overtaken by Finn’s 308 for the season.

It’s worth pointing out that Finn’s success has been based on a successful rotation between Salah and Haaland, before this week’s dalliance with Mitrovic. Those who have spread the net a little wider have not fared so well. No names mentioned.

It has been a pretty boring season for captaincy, maybe that’s why Magnus is finding it tough, with Haaland picked 52 per cent of the time by ‘The Great and The Good’ and Salah on 32 per cent of occasions. Not much room for differential picks here.

CONCLUSION

Before I vanish back to pour over the upcoming fixtures and Double Gameweek delights, it’s worth bringing out the old cliché of “play your own game”, there are multiple routes over the next few weeks so make sure you focus on your own team.

Some will take multiple hits, some will Triple Captain, some will plan weeks ahead and some will gamble on ropey Spurs defenders and Crystal Palace attackers. Or is that last one just me? Whatever route you take, own your own decisions and make sure to have fun along the way.

Enjoy the chaos over the next few weeks. We will be back next time to celebrate the success and/or conduct the autopsy of ‘The Great and The Good’ performances.

Some didn't. E.G. BigManBakar - although decision was close.

FOMO is rife, especially when our teams all look so similar due to the post-WC unlimited transfers. Any edge to nudge ahead.

I also feel like that people prefer making decisions when they have hard facts we don't yet know what the DGWs look later on this season exactly, or which players will be available. Haaland's a top player, should play both, even with tricky fixtures - can fully understand using it now to get the chip out of the way.

Feel "Fear of missing out" has "Fear of the unknown" trounced the decision this week.

The unknown is hard to account for hence the facts & figures decision, but I reckon there's the potential for other opportunities down the line. Personally, there's still half a season left, with various DGWs & I sat having a drink in the pub pre-deadline without a burning urge or fear to hit TC for whatever reason, just wasn't as enthused. Rightly or wrongly!

Maybe it's because I'm burnt out with all the football this last half-a-year, or because our teams all look so similar, or I'm a suffering Chelsea fan

I've heard one of them openly admitting that he plays safe, doing some template transfers to keep his viewership, going rogue is a risk. I guess that's the price for starting FPL channel, you lose some kind of freedom how to play game.

Any other people who have been here a while stunned at how toxic the discourse has become on this forum? Bitterness at the direction FFScout is going in, frustration at "content creators" and overall dissatisfaction at the state of the game and rise of the "Twitter casuals".

A far cry from the colloquial, low stakes banter of 10 years ago. Not the "Breadbin" years but in and around there.

My opinion on TC use is that it has to be maximised for the season. Not for the best player in the league. Not for the best team in the league. But for the best possible GW in the season

This means it's the one chip where FOMO is lost on me. If you feel Haaland vs Spurs and Man U promises the most points from one player in one GW this season, then I'm all for that. But the fear of others using TC in the same GW doesn't really add up to me because you still have the normal (C)

If you miss your best BB week, the points are usually stuck on your bench, and there won't be many other occasions when 15 players have great fixtures lined up. If you miss your best FH week, you could miss out on a lot of points and your FH could have much less of an impact later, maybe because your normal squad is just too good (strong template this season)

If you miss your best (or the most popular) TC week, you probably still capped that player. And in a season with multiple DGWs involving even that same player later (as well as a few other great options), you can make up for it with some smart timing. The closest a mistimed TC can come to going wrong is stuff like early injuries and cards, which can happen to the popular TC as well. The next closest would be if the popular TC candidate scores 20+ points and your TC in what you consider a better DGW doesn't come close (I find this unlikely, tbh)

To counter that, it's hard to predict the beat GW of the season this yet.

Can also argue that you SHOULD use the TC on the best player - especially when form of the player is so important often (and Haaland has a great record, will be well up for it).

For the record I haven't played my TC but I don't think it's wrong to have played it now given current facts.

Again, I'm all for it if you think this is the best GW to play it

I just don't get the FOMO aspect, because you'll probably still cap him and there'll be other opportunities involving, again, the same best player

It just seems like the worst possible time to TC Haaland with those two fixtures and him and city not being in the best form right now. I guess we will find out soon.

It doesn't necessarily need to be triggered for the best gameweek of the season though does it?

Assuming it's this week, Haaland TC will get 50% more points than captainers. His EO is 206% for me so I'll assume that's everyone around me will least have the armband on him.

Isn't it more valuable using it on a high differential captain week (and also getting it right?). Admittedly that is much harder to do/find, but that's the point?

I'm not very concerned about weekly rank, but overall season rank

See the last sentence of my original post. When the points are counted at the end of the season, your TC just needs to come close to the popular TC. And if you feel your TC has better chances, you just might beat 'em

Losing GW rank doesn't matter to me if I feel I have better options coming up

Just to reiterate: my point is purely about FOMO as a decision-maker here. I don't believe I have the crystal ball to know the best TC GW. I'm referring to the decision process

I think the best possible outcome for me was to hold it until later and plant it on someone that others may not be captaining even. I’m so far behind and playing catch up. I’m going to captain Haaland this gw anyway and a lot of others will have used it by the later stages. If some team gets a brilliant dgw like Brentford of Fulham and there are other good captain options the same week so not everyone will captain them anyway, that’s what I’m holding out for…

Toney TC or Mitro or something. If I was protecting my rank I completely understand using it this gw mind.

My reasoning for TCing haaland this week is that if manc drop a lot of points this weekend the title race gap could be huge and manc assets could become a no go at the end of the season if champions League is all they have to play for.
So to keep the title race alive irrespective of fixtures manc have to go for the win which bodes well for haaland when he is almost guaranteed to play both fixtures. A couple of goals and it's a 12-15 pointer. Which is good enough.
(Even gw 23 is a good shout for haaland)

As far as other options go, you never know with salah and kane if they will prioritize the league or the other competitions when the opposition is so easy.

So all in all it doesn't make a big difference imo, as we are only talking about 100% of the players points and not 300%(TC vs normal captain). A chance to get 15ish instead of hoping for 25+ which looks hard is completely fine I guess(plus frees up not being able to bb in a good dgw if tc and bb both look appealing)

Stating this again: my post is not against choosing Haaland this GW. If you felt that was the best for your team, I'm all for it

My point is against FOMO as the main reason

How is it FOMO if it is a logical reason. Manc need to keep the title race alive. United have conceded chances, de gea has been class. So it's not a stone wall defense by any means. And spurs well everyone knows. So it is a logical decision and not fomo I guess

Then my post is not referring to you 🙂

I agree with Haaland (TC) if you have logical reasons for it. I'm referring to those who got pushed by FOMO

                            I hope that clarifies it

                      +1 for a good post!

One reason for going with the flow here, FOMO, could be that you might have missed something in your thinking that good managers spotted. I mean, if most good managers TC Haaland this week it tells me that it's a good week to do it. Borges, Sollie, Crellin, Andy, Stephenson, all have TC this week.

I haven't used the chip this week but when I see this many good managers do it, I wish I had.

Couldn't agree more with your first paragraph. For me using TC on 85% owned player is a waste, plain and simple, I'm not a mathematician so I won't go into details but some people claiming that EO doesn't matter are in denial. There is a reason we don't care if highly owned players score, everybody has them and their points, your effective gain is minimal.

We play against 10m other managers, FPL is not a void where only you play, having more points in a given GW is not always better for your OR. If you score 120 pts this GW with average being 115 you will barely move up or even lose some rank, if you score 70 with 40 average you're flying.

FOMO is a dark side of "progress", we have sites like livefpl, we have social media, back in a days you would know what your 2-3 buddies doing for next GW, now you know what whole FPL world is doing, it influence us no matter if we admit it or not. It is killing a little bit of fun this game should provide no doubt.

This Mudryk player Arsenal are about to sign, has anyone heard much about him?

Admittedly my days of Championship Manager and FIFA career mode are over so my own knowledge is lacking.

€95m total seems like a lot for a player I've only seen Fabrizio hype up.

All seriousness, remember watching a Ukraine game ( don’t know why ) and he came off the bench and I immediately wondered how on earth he didn’t start - stood out so much was a level above

Has all the qualities to be a beast winger, but you never know how someone will adapt - exciting though

Watch some champions league highlights for Shakhtar. He is fast, has a good shot including from outside the box. I personally think he is a bit raw and should improve reading of the game but otherwise he is very good.

Yes clean sheets may not be expected too often but Emery is getting there so looking more likely. I just saw that Moreno scored 5 goals last season for Betis but not sure if his position was more as a winger.

I’ve a feeling this game is going to be fast paced and fierce tackles and I predict a red card. Have 6 players in this game but f**k fantasy, come on United!!!
