Here, two-time Indian FPL champion Lateriser talks about learning to dilute the online noise and play your own game when making transfers.

The FFS Pro Pundits 34

We are in a state of FPL stalemate. Having done an aggressive 12-point hit last Gameweek, my instinct to bring in a Brighton and Hove Albion player this week, in particular Kaoru Mitoma (£5.0m), is very high.

However, as my fellow Pro Pundit Zophar rightly pointed out in his article here, the reasons to save the free transfer are plentiful. The reason I still struggle with this is that points are right there for the taking, especially with Brighton’s opponents Leicester City being behind only Leeds United for expected goals conceded (xGC) during the last six matches.

Additionally, with the subsequent attractive fixtures being Bournemouth (H), Crystal Palace (A) and Fulham (H), this temptation is going to be hard to resist. Tom Freeman did give me some ammunition for patience with his excellent dive into Miguel Almiron’s (£5.9m) numbers here.

MOVING PARTS

The thinking in my head is that, if I’m not buying Mitoma this week, do I want to go there next week instead? My answer is that, by having only one Arsenal defender in my squad, getting two of their attackers will probably be next week’s priority.

There is a risk-reward analysis you need to make, looking at how many players you have from the four teams likely to blank in Gameweek 25 – Newcastle United, Manchester United, Brighton and Brentford – should the first two overcome their Carabao Cup semi-final opponents.

It’s worth noting that there are a few moving parts to this, as Brighton might still not blank, but my FPL philosophy of ‘if you’re sure of getting a player, do it at the start of a good fixture run to maximise the chance of a haul’ might have to take a back seat due to such moving parts.

A lot of people are complaining about FPL being template-heavy right now but Thursday night showed that there are enough picks to boost your ranking if you’re paying close attention. My 12-point hit was to set up for the long-term, as I wanted the right three for Manchester City’s Double Gameweek 23 and Man United’s potential Double Gameweek 22.

I obviously knew the risks of going for a semi-injured Anthony Martial and I do have a bias there because I have always felt that people don’t realise how much of a first-choice Martial is under ten Hag.

That said, the injury risks are high and I decided to ‘semi-bluff’, which might not be for everyone. I also got a fair amount of stick for shifting Joao Cancelo (£7.2m) and Phil Foden (£8.1m) out for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) and Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m) but the simple reasoning is that I wanted to get what I believed were the right three Man City players instead of convenient transfers.

While that is always risky for a Pep Guardiola team, it appeared to me that Mahrez was their sharpest attacker since the restart so I chose him for the mid-term.

DILUTE THE ONLINE NOISE

There are a lot of ways to play FPL and I’ve always said there is no right or wrong approach. With so much content creation and information out there, we are sometimes led to playing in one certain manner and that occasionally subdues our instincts, removing our individuality from the game.

We’re all battling this throughout the season and, about two months ago, I made a decision to play FPL in my own way and dilute the noise so that I have only three or four reliable soundboards to rely on when making decisions.

People never realise how much thought FPL managers put into making moves, as they are carefully weighted. While talking about that to others, I promise you no more than 5% of those thoughts go in the reply you get.

The most important replies from your soundboards are fact-based ones that cite factors that you might have missed out on while weighing up your decisions and these are the most important ones. Opinion-based replies like ‘player x is historically a troll’ are looser, in my opinion, and should always be taken with a pinch of salt. As long as your decisions are well-researched, you should be fine.

That’s it from me this week, as we all quietly observe this state of FPL stalemate (or not) and wait for the upcoming storm!

Any Akanji owners concerned about him starting v Wolves with the return of all of City's CBs?

If benched I have only Bueno (Mci A) off the bench.

Planned to bring in Odegaard / Saka for Almiron this GW but wondering if transfer better spent tending to defence (Patterson upgrade) given the likelihood of a Bueno 1 pointer.

I have Akanji, I'll keep him until I'm proven wrong. As long as you have playing defenders on your bench you're fine.

Yeah I'm not confident of a start but have Shaw on the bench.

I have Akanji but only got him with clear rotating options on my bench via WC18, yes

He does somehow keep starting, though. Maybe it's the hunger Pep keeps talking about. I'll sell in GW26 or when Pep clearly drops him - whichever comes first

Agreed on upgrading Patterson anyway, as Everton is so bad that he might get you negative points when he returns. Almiron can easily stay vs Palace, while Odegaard can wait one more GW vs Man U

What changes please? 1FT and 0.3itb.

Get rid of Foden and Cancelo? Or roll transfer…

    Kane Mitrovic Haaland

There's no clear winner. Mac Allister is their penalty-taker and will get his double digit hauls on some occasions. March is finishing his chances very well and is on a hot streak. Mitoma is destroying defenders, creating opportunities for himself and teammates.

Bottomed: Playing your own game. Interesting. Does anyone else play the way I do?

I take a lot of hits, especially early on in a season.

I know knowledge > price rises. But I can't help but think "if player x rises, I can't get him", and I often transfer early too in order to get the player I want (despite the early transfer having risk associated with injury etc).

I can't wait for the next deadline, because it means I can then tinker again.

I'm slowly getting better at holding transfers (at least until closer to the deadline), but I don't think the taking hits is going away anytime soon.

Often my hit taking calms down in the second half of the season as we have more data on players and because of the usual team value I have, I can afford to wait longer rather than being priced out.

My overall rank is always garbage, but for me my focus is on my minileagues, which I often do ok in.

Just wondered if anyone else plays this way?

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 7 Years
      2 years, 11 months ago

Yeah, that's me. I play very differently from how I comment here, because that's simply how my brain works (ADHD, long story). Early transfers, adapting too quickly to changes, differential hunting, very long-term plans that change frequently... I'm forcing myself to have a bit less "fun", as that was the promise I made to myself before going ahead with WC18

Calmed down a bit since GW18, but I'm already getting my head turned again by the likes of Bruno and Mahrez, with Maddison not too far from a return

Itchy fingers over Salah, Almiron and Akanji. Almost went Kepa to Ederson for a hit last GW 😀

I'm actually posting my more logical plans here as a form of anchor against my wilder transfer tendencies, and it's helping a bit. I hope I can maintain this into next season

      1. KeanosMagic
        • 3 Years

I don't think Ederson is necessarily a bad option. He's nailed at least which is more than most of their team, I can see why you were tempted! I think I'll hold him until after 25 and then go for someone else.

I could do with someone else managing my account (with my instuctions) as this might stop me rage transferring and being so reactive when a player I don't own hauls

A few questions keeping me in check these days:

          1. Before any trade, I need a good reason to buy *and* a good reason to sell
          2. This player wasn't a dud when I bought him, probably very recently, probably as a long-term move. Why is he a dud now? Stats? Eye test? Team performance? Fixture turn? Or am I simply reacting to being disappointed?

It's way too difficult to make the right move this gw..

    2ft's/1.4ITB

    Ward, Kepa
    Gabriel, Trippier, Bueno, Shaw, Schar
    Martinelli, Salah, KdB, Almiron, Rashford
    Mitro, Haaland, Greenwood

I think these are some of my options:

    A)Salah/Greenwood -> Mitoma/Kane
    B)Salah/Greenwood -> Saka/Toney
    C)Salah/Almiron -> Odegaard/Mitoma
    D)Salah/Almiron -> Mahrez/Saka

And I don't really know who I prefer more out of Odegaard and Saka..

    Help is much appreciated

Far from WC territory, imo. I'd actually roll and reassess with 2 FTs

Kepa over Ward because I think Liverpool's attack is blunt atm, while Brighton is quite the opposite... Leading to Kepa racking up saves from confidence-lacking efforts while Ward watches the ball fly past him a few times, imo

    Advice needed please.

Bench one of the following in GW21:
    1. KDB
    2. Bruno
    3. Rashford
    4. Odegaard
    5. March

Leaning towards KDB on form / risk of benching. Is that madness?

The other four are all returning better than KDB at the mo. Want to start March while he is red hot. Bought him last GW but benched his 19 point haul.. doh!

    Will play 3-4-3:

    Kepa;
    Trippier, Botman, Lewis (White, Shaw)

    Haaland, Kane, Johnson

You think he (KDB) definitely starts? Even if he does, something isn’t right there. And look at Bruno’s record since the WC.

Only thing is the fixtures. Wolves at home is clearly a lot better than Arsenal away.

    Best choice of these?
    Mahrez (WOL + TOT)
    March (LEI + BOU)
Odegaard (MUN + double GW soon)

    Cheers.

    Bit stuck with this lot:

    Kepa
    Cancelo Trippier White Shaw
    Salah Mahrez Rashford Martinelli
    Haaland (c) Mitrovic

(Ward Martial Andreas Nico W) 1FT 1.0 ITB

Is rolling, then bringing in Nketia for Martial a good idea? Any other thoughts?

    Thanks!

Has someone got the recent points for KDB against Wolves? Obviously I see the 10 from this season.

Why Raya over Kepa or Sanchez? Sanchez has an extra fixture to play too..

Brentford defence better, racks up saves each game so wll haul when they keep a clean sheet.

Am confident he will be the second top scoring GK after Pope come the season end and will probably represent better value.

Think rolling the transfer is very valuable this week ahead of any announcements on double and blank gameweeks, even though having 2 defenders and my GK in the same game isn't ideal:

    De Gea
    Trippier, Gabriel, White
    Mahrez, KDB, Rashford, Almiron
    Haaland (C), Kane (vc), Toney

    Ward, Andreas, Thomas, Dalot

    I need to replace Digne.
    a) Gabriel (3rd Arsenal)
    b) Perisic
    c) James
    d) Mings
    e) Lodi/ Aurier

    Suggestions please.

Not to Gabriel then. Prefer double attack over defence.

Yeah, I had plans to bring in Nketiah around the double. Locks me out of that and but will let me bring in a Leeds or United Striker for their potential double in 22.

In draft, would you do Eriksen to Maddison now so that nobody could sign him next week? It would mean I'd play Almiron.
