Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead returns for the 2022/23 season with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundits PrasZophar and FPL Harry,  FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and of course last year’s mini-league winner and overall no.2 Suvansh.

“I need a little time to think it over
I need a little space just on my own”

Gameweek 24 provided an unnecessary distraction to our thinking time ahead of a Liverpool-dominated double, Blank Gameweek 28 and a shopping spree down Brighton and Hove Albion way, subject to train strikes.

It still managed to bring its own drama, reminding us of the potential rotation ahead, as last week’s hero Riyad Mahrez (£7.8m) missed out, along with an injury-prone Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.9m) and of course Reece James (£5.8m) – who some of us still inexplicably own.

So, this week’s adoration went to the Manchester United triumvirate of Bruno Fernandes (£9.8m), Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) and Luke Shaw (£5.4m), just before the majority make plans to sell them ahead of their blank. We are a fickle bunch!

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Mark Sutherns had two reasons to celebrate this week, as his beloved Nottingham Forest hung onto a point against Manchester City and he was the leading scorer amongst The Great and The Good, with a Rashford captaincy helping him to 85 points.

This gave him a green arrow of over 700,000, keeps him nibbling at the toes of Magnus Carlsen and Suvansh Singh, plus he’s now just 70 points behind Az. The gap was over 120 in Gameweek 20. He couldn’t, could he?

FPL Harry still leads the way but Ben Crellin has closed the gap, thanks to his patience in holding Fernandes and an autosub which saw James Tarkowski (£4.3m) come in for Mitrovic.

TRANSFERS

Most decided to keep their powder dry when it came to transfers, saving up for those supposedly ‘must-have’ Liverpool players, although Finn Sollie and Magnus got ahead of the game by purchasing Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m).

The more frugal went for bargain Tarkowski, who will be the enabler of choice for many over the next few weeks, as the Sean Dyche dynasty is built at Goodison Park.

The full list of transfers is below:

  • Az – Gnonto (Martial)
  • LTFPL Andy – No transfer
  • Ben Crellin – No transfer
  • Fabio Borges – No transfer
  • Finn Sollie – Alexander-Arnold (Doherty)
  • FPL Harry – No transfer
  • Joe Lepper – No transfer
  • Geoff Dance – No transfer
  • FPL General – No transfer
  • Magnus Carlsen – Alexander-Arnold (Trippier)
  • Mark Sutherns – Tarkowski (Doherty)
  • FPL Matthew – Tarkowski (Doherty)
  • Neale Rigg – No transfer
  • Pras – No transfer
  • Suvansh – No transfer
  • Tom Freeman – No transfer
  • Tom Stephenson – Tarkowski (Shaw)
  • Zophar – No transfer

TEMPLATE

The template is braced for some impact ahead of the double and there’s little change here, apart from that man Tarkowski. Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) is losing his essential status, as Magnus joins Fabio Borges in seeing the Newcastle United bonus point magnet as surplus to requirements.

The full details for The Great and The Good are as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

Ward (13), Kepa (13)

Trippier (16), Shaw (14), White (11), Patterson (7), Bueno/Tarkowski(5)

Rashford (18), Saka (17), De Bruyne (13), Odegaard (11), Andreas (10)

Haaland (18), Mitrovic (12), Kane (8)

TARGETING YOUR TRANSFERS

A glance now at how our merry band have spent their money this season. The below outlines the transfers made by position:

Unsurprisingly, there has been little movement in the forward line as it’s been Erling Haaland (£12.2m), Mitrovic and one other for most of the season. Finn, Mark and Geoff have been the most adventurous in this position with their moves.

Therefore the majority of the action has been in midfield, with all of us being spoilt for choice in this area because of form players such as Miguel Almiron (£5.6m), Kaoru Mitoma (£5.4m) and Martin Odegaard (£7.0m) all catching the eye. Our current leader FPL Harry has built his success on jumping onto the right one at the right time.

At the back, it’s been a case of reducing investment and Az has spent most of his trades trying to balance the books in defence.

CONCLUSION

Up next is a Gameweek which will tell us a lot about the type of FPL manager we are. The double lovers will go all in with plenty of Liverpool hits, the more cautious will worry themselves over rotation and the fixtures ahead, whilst the less engaged will probably wonder why their Newcastle and Man United triple-ups aren’t playing this week.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now, but remember: don’t have FPL nightmares.

Bro I am in love with what a WC can do. Alternatively I’ll need to do a big hit

I rumble about it in my latest video, what you think?

        https://youtu.be/kgzlGTv-lZg

Basically is all in on doubles in GW 25 and 27, avoid hits and no FH in GW 28

If Darwin passes fit, I’ll be on a seven DGW players + Kepa, James(or maybe Lewis), Mahrez and Haaland with no hits 🙂 But already used wildcard… I think you should save WC for preparing a bench boost later on 🙂

After transfers made, how many games does your team play?

Have 16 here with no hits taken.

Perhaps the wrong approach but taking a -12. Changed the (c) from Haaland to Rashford a few minutes before last deadline for a 13 point gain.

Doing the following, with the view of fielding 9-11 in GW28 and saving the FH for a future DGW. DDG, Ake, KDB, Rashford to Pickford, TAA, Salah, Gakpo.

Leaves me with 9DGW’s, Kane & Haaland. I hope it pays off, not taken many hits this season!

Interesting to see people throwing everything at the DGW players while getting rid of some BGW players that are a good long term hold

Think the gains are actually to be made in GW 26/27 when these teams have to put out wolves/Everton/Liverpool players instead of the reliable point getters in bruno shaw trippier kdb/mahrez toney to name a few. It’ll take more than 1 transfer to get them back so be careful putting all your eggs in one basket

Wildcard 26. Easy. Only reason the strategy to wait till 27 is for BB but u can pretty easily predict who'll get the 29 doubles after the fa cup matches during gw25. And get in Brighton/Brentford players early as well. Play Estupinan and Mee over Trippier and Shaw who face City and Liverpool attacks.

In LiveFPL the extra captain fixtures are counted,. so in a sgw you'd have 12 fixtures, not eleven. Therefore you'd add 2 fixtures for either Saka(c) or Salah(c) this week for example.

Exact money for Bruno + Kane + Trippier > Salah + Darwin + TAA -4.

    A. Go for it tonight
    B. Hold off and get Robertson instead of TAA if decide to stick with those moves

    1. Snake Juice

      Wait until Liverpool play.

Big question is: will Tripps dropping tonight affect your sell price? If so, risk it.

Tripps dropping won't affect price. Only Salah rising would price me out - a chance of that happening but not guaranteed with free hits / some wildcards in play presumably

Looking at similar moves mate but with Estupinan and KDB and Kane only have 0.1 to spare, if KDB goes down and Salah goes up tonight then it affect the moves, think il just wait until after Pool play tomorrow tho to be safe

People seem split on whether going for it on this DGW is worthwhile.

I'm doing it. (Unless Darwin is actually injured).
Got 0.5 itb to absorb price changes during the week.

Kane, Bruno, Trippier, Shaw > Darwin, Salah, TAA, Tarkowski (-12)

    Ederson
    Gabriel*, TAA*, Tarkowski*, Bueno*
    Saka*, Salah(c)*, Odegaard*
    Haaland, Darwin*, Gnonto

    Ward, MacAllister, Rashford, Botman

For me, I'm not convinced Liverpool are back to being worth a triple up. Yes I'd expect their players score well this round. But if those transfers are another set of -4s in 27 or 28 or 29 to navigate other blanks and doubles then does it pay off?

I'm all for a DGW punt. -12 seems extreme

      1. RogDog_jimmy
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 11 months ago

I think that's a totally reasonable position to take .
I'm doing my long term planning and feeling pretty good about it, lots of risk, but lots of ways for it to go right. Maybe 2/4 of them pay off - that's a big gain. 4/4 and I'll be laughing.

If I was more confident in it being a genuine Liverpool revival, I'd be more tempted. Still may end up with 2 players anyway, but for free and in a way that works with my longer term plans.

If it is a genuine revival, you could be laughing

              Hypothetically, I might

Realistically, I'm not taking -8 for Wolves or Everton defenders and I'm not selling anyone further up the pitch as they're all either playing (hopefully) or I'll want them after 25

      2. Eleven Hag
        • 8 Years

This is exactly my dilemma, by getting Salah without selling Kane, I am locking myself into taking hits down the line due to weak bench of 3.9s and Andreas.

    2. RogDog_jimmy
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 11 months ago

      Yeah - I'm adding 7 fixtures for 12 points.
7 blanks is about 14 points - so I should be up no matter what happens.

It's the potential downside on team structure/cleanup that is the big risk, with the hope that I'm enough ahead after this week to pre-pay that fee.

    A) Get Salah
    ______________
I will not have any funds in the bank. In this case I will need to sell white/ Tripps and Odegaard/Salah to get Brighton players in dgw27.

    B) Get Gapko/Maddison

Keep funds in the bank. Upgrade Andreas and Lewis in dgw27.

I can only afford Salah and Gomez/Tark without selling Kane.

Hence it's a choice to be made this week between Kane and (Salah-4) if I want to navigate the doubles and blanks up until Gw29.

In a similar position but leaning on getting Salah in then assessing the midweek cup games and confirmation of the gw28 and 29 fixtures. Will look to move one of Salah or Kane out to upgrade other areas of the squad once the fixtures are confirmed while still attacking gw25 by getting Salah and TAA in

fplstatistics has put out a wildcard alert:

An onslaught of wild cards has been detected. Whenever the total volume of wild card transfers for a player exceeds the normal (i.e. effective) transfers for that player, then predictions for that player become extermely difficult. In effect, accuracy reduces and overly enthusiastic predictions result for that player. The loss in accuracy is a direct consequence of the statistical mathematics utilised in making the price predictions

Without seeing your team, it's hard to say, but if you can put out 11 with a -8, then that's better than losing your FH with some much bigger blanks and doubles to come.
