Our latest Members article series, reviving an old Scout strand called Tales of the Expected, explores the expected goals (xG) data from the last six matches, assessing each side from an attacking and defensive perspective.

In addition, we’ll also check out the form players on show, asking if their recent output is sustainable.

Having last looked at these tables after Gameweek 23, it’s time to revisit them again, armed with the latest stats from our Members Area.

Only Premium Members are able to read these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

XG: LAST SIX MATCHES

Brighton and Hove Albion have claimed victory in just one of their last four Premier League matches, yet their attacking process remains sound.

In that period (Gameweek 21-24), they have created 9.36 xG but only found the net four times, with Alexis Mac Allister (£5.4m) particularly wasteful in front of goal.

However, the fact they are racking up in excess of 2 xG so often is hugely encouraging for those eyeing up their attacking assets.

Albion ‘double’ in Gameweek 27, along with Brentford, Crystal Palace and Southampton.

Attacking investment in the latter two probably isn’t necessary, depending on how much weight you put in these tables of course, but what about Brentford?

After their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in Gameweek 24, Thomas Frank’s troops have gone 11 league games without defeat. No team in the division has lost fewer home games than Brentford in 2022/23, with Arsenal still the only visiting side to have triumphed at the Gtech Community Stadium.

That suggests now is the time to invest in Ivan Toney (£7.6m), with a home match against Fulham preceding Double Gameweek 27, which involves away trips to Everton and Southampton.

Only West Ham United have underperformed their xG more emphatically across the season than Everton. Sean Dyche has made them more solid at the back but they still lack firepower: they had 15 shots/1.71 xG against Aston Villa without scoring.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United (three goals from 9.03 xG) and Chelsea (two goals from 7.69 xG) remain the two biggest xG underachievers in the last six matches and both need to become much more clinical in front of goal.

Finally, we’re not used to seeing Fulham quite this low down, but since the World Cup there has been a shift in approach. Marco Silva stated that he wanted the Cottagers to tighten up, which is understandable given how open they were earlier in the campaign. However, their improved performances at the back have impacted their attacking play in a big way.

Makes it worse as there’s doubts he’d play / be taken out of the media spotlight so Brentford don’t get bad press.

At least if he is banned you’d have certainty

              That's self-sabotage if Brentford does this 😀

They're part of the process of delaying this decision as late as possible, to protect their footballing and financial interests if they have to sell him

            2. Zimo
              • 7 Years

There's no reason for Brentford to do that. They were already aware of the situation for months and played him and its not a criminal charge.

        2. Ze_Austin
          • 7 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

Oh no. That's different from an official ban. If he's contesting at least *some* of the charges, then this might not be as soon as it seems. Same thing as the reaction to his initial charges: this is now three months later, right?

Unless the news is that he's admitted to all or they've started processing the ban already, which will then affect us in FPL

I have him so I'll try to have an available FT anyway. It could even be the 10 yellows that come in first

          1. Scalper
            • 9 Years
            2 years, 9 months ago

Contesting some of the charges may not impact when he gets the ban, but how long the ban will be. Since he’s admitted to some of the charges he’s been associated with, there’s concrete reason to enforce the ban.

In other words, if he successfully challenges some of the accusations, the ban length could be reduced. But as long as he’s admitted to at least 1 charge, the date to which he serves the ban should be the same.

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 7 Years
              2 years, 9 months ago

I'm just saying it lengthens the process. Even the article reporting this stated "before the end of the season"

It's another step in the process, not an immediate action (I think). I'd have been more worried about an immediate action if he pled guilty to all, because that would then mean the next step is a decision on ban length, bringing that start date much closer

Maybe lawyers in here might explain it better to us

Strong-ish from Brighton, considering the absentees

Academy attacking mid (Buonanotte) starting. Sarmiento and Mitoma seem to be the wingers here

I think that's Groß filling in for Estupiñán at LB, and Mac Allister back in the double pivot

    Oh yeah. Fergie starts! 🙂

            Somehow missed that, sorry

But yeah, I'll bench or sell. The reasons I bought him have evaporated: regular starts post-WC, but now prioritized in other competitions

      Most likely.
Blackburn over Leicester means Leicester play GW28, and Brentford double in 27, play 28, and double 29.
Leeds over Fulham means those who brought in Liverpool players this week get them in 28 as well.

I would save a transfer this week and attack DGW27 with 2FT. Not sure which one of your front 8 you bench but I would hold the 2 Chelsea boys for now as they got Leeds at home and then Leicester. I guess if Maddison is not fit you could move him to Mitoma or MacAllister next week.

It doesn't call for a WC to me. Think about your chip strategy after you see how tonight's games go: if Blackburn and Fulham win, you're sitting well for GW28. In that case, I'd look at Mudryk and Patterson out, possibly for a Brighton mid and Mings.

Dunk's long-range passing is fantastic. He's had that for a while.

I think assist was much safer choice for Mitoma than trying to score.

If we not getting him so he will play and haul, if we get him he will get the ban

Issue is those wanting to WC that own, do you hold him and risk him getting banned after or go without

Are any of you considering a Ben CG boost GW29 with 15 doublers playing?

Has to be in the mix of possibilities ... I'll carefully consider after all these cup matches.

Surely Toney will be banned before the weekend, and if not shortly after

Bearing in mind he's just accepted certain charges and has denied others, the FA still need to make a decision on the length of the ban and also need to deal with the contested charges. Could still take a fair while I'd sat
