Where have all the clean sheets gone?

That’s what Ederson‘s (£5.4m) owners will have been asking themselves recently, with only two arriving in the last 13 league matches.

Having averaged 19.5 shut-outs over the previous four seasons, Pep Guardiola’s side currently has just eight of those in 2022/23 – and there are only 13 games left of the campaign.

So are there reasons for this, or is it just bad luck?

Let’s delve deeper into this issue.

THE DATA

Using Premium Members Area statistics, we can compare this season to the last few, as well as break 2022/23 down into pre- and post-World Cup.

In several areas, only the 2019/20 campaign stands out as being worse. Yet despite their internal standards slipping, Man City still rank as the league’s best (per game) in all of the above categories.

Studying data since the winter restart, their per-match numbers have deteriorated only slightly from 0.81 to 0.91 for expected goals conceded (xGC) and from 7.29 to 8.27 for shots conceded.

But interestingly, their recent rate of conceding shots on target (1.82) is better than ever before.

    Which option:

    A. March and Watkins. March to Maddison in 28 (3 BHA in 27)

    B. Maddison and Kane. Kane to Watkins in 28 (2 BHA in 27)

    Thanks

Immense - the word "likely" leaves things open but feels confident for 27 and 28 and the rest is a bonus

Yeah should be good for 26,27,28 at least.

They may as well run him into the ground until then as he'll have months and months to recover

Makes so much sense for Brentford to want it to start in April as well since he'll be back by September/October if it's a 6 month ban.

A bit stuck with my team, juggling all the blanks is making my brain hurt

For this week, should I either save FT, bring in Mee for Lewis/Bueno or should I bring in Mitoma for Pereira?

    Kepa (Ward)
    Shaw / Trip / Tark (Lewis/Bueno)
Saka / Ode / Salah / Rash (Pereira)
    Nket / Haaland / Kane

    thank you

Would you start Mitoma or Mee if you brought them in this GW?

Tough, Mitoma has WHU at home and Mee has Fulham at home. On paper maybe Mee would be the safer option for clean sheet but not much in it! then I also have a benching issue. So maybe I am safer to just bring in both next week

Yeah I think I would keep it straightforward and save FT

Think I'll likely WC next week - with that in mind, how would you use the FT here? Can't see much! Or better to roll the FT and potentially burn a FT next week if I do end up WCing?

    Kepa
    Trent, Gabriel, Tarkowski
    Salah, Rashford, Odegaard, Martinelli, Mitoma
    Haaland, Darwin

    Ederson, Mitrovic, Trippier, Bueno
    Bank 0.6m, 1FT

Bring in a player that covers DGW27. This will leave the door open not to WC if you decide not to. Mitro to Toney

Watkins - Nailed 90 mins. Current info we have on Arsenal shows Nketiah is a rotation risk with Trossard/Martinelli

Don't know how much of a rotation risk Nketiah may be by GW28. Trossard is already here & Jesus is at least training now.

I think I may need to consider WC26/27 here.

Currently have 0 Brentford/Brighton players and only 5 nailed options for BGW28 (excluded Nketiah and Patterson).

    WC26/27 helps navigate DGW27, BGW28 and DGW29. I can use FH in BGW32 and use FTs for DGW34. BB27/34/37

    WC2, FH & BB left
    1FT 0.0ITB
    Kepa
    TAA Tark Shaw
    Saka Salah Ode Rashford
    Nketiah Haaland Darwin
    (Ward Andreas Trippier Patterson)

I am thinking to avoid Bri/Bre defence so my plan is to save in gw26,1 ft in gw27(Will get only Toney),-4 in gw28(get Watkins,Sterling,Almiron/Maddison),FH in gw29.Don't know if you like it.

I quite like their GK/def options. Raya, Henry/Mee and Estupinan are the ones I'm considering.

Attacking options in March, Mitoma, Mac Allister and Toney are good options as well

I am in a similar boat Tony. (and no FH left as I was hacked).

I am getting rid of Ederson TAA Tark Salah Nketiah Darwin Andreas as well. Ward depends on funds with Raya/Kepa or Raya/ Ward

Only players I would likely keep are Kepa, Shaw, Trippier, Saka, Ode, Rashford and Haaland.

I would do it now. Not really keen on playing triple LIV v MUN, plus Nketiah doubt & could improve on Tark

If I WC27, I would likely do Darwin/Nketiah to Toney with the FT. Is there much of a gain comparing current team using FT to WC26? I do gain one week of info if I delay to 27.

Really Can't decided what to do but I prefer not to use any of WC BB FH at least before DGW 29 may use BB
    Ramsdale (Ward)
Akè Tarkowski Mee ( Tripper Patte)
Salah Ødegaard Saka Mitoma ( McNeil)
    Haaland Kane Darwin

Not whacking on wildcarding early - but the whole reason GW26 is being battered on about is becuase people brought in some poor players in GW25.

If you kept Kane, didn't get LIV defense (etc) then you are in a good spot to wildcard in GW27 with a week's extra information.

    For example, I have:

    Kepa
    James White Tarkowski
    Salah Saka Rashford Mitoma
    Haaland Kane Nketiah
    Ward // Trippier Andreas Bueno

My Chelsea faith dwindles but 2nd best CS odds, and Tarkowski plays NFO. (50/50 game really). Providing Nketiah back to starting, it's okay. Although I could buy Toney for free (or sell Salah).

Yup I'm currently leaning towards 27 over 26 if WCing as I don't see much gain when comparing current team setup vs WC26

Yes one Liverpool player helps you a lot.

Having 3 I think makes me want to WC this week and have Nketiah. I think 2 chelsea is good too to hold on to

I will do it this week I think and have an extra transfer in GW28 and GW29 if I roll GW 27

      https://www.wolves.co.uk/news/mens-first-team/20230228-lopetegui-on-cunhas-injury-netos-recovery-and-liverpool-threat/

Lopetegui said he'd be touch and go as to whether Cunha could be among his squad for [tonight's] clash..

I wouldn't have my hopes too high. He could be in the squad but on the bench.
