Sergio Aguero runs amok as Man City see off a Malaysia XI 3-1. A dazzling solo goal and a couple of assists served Fantasy managers a devastating reminder of his current form, with Carlos Tevez and Adam Johnson also finding the net. Scans reveal Gareth Bale looks to have escaped serious injury after Charlie Adam’s challenge in Spurs’ friendly with Liverpool last Saturday:

Malaysia XI 1 Man City 3
After Vincent Kompany flew home on Sunday to be treated for a calf problem, Roberto Mancini reshuffled his defensive options for yesterday’s match with a Malaysia XI. City kept faith in their new 3-5-2 formation once again and, with Pablo Zabaleta slotting into the back-three – Adam Johnson was handed a rare starting role on the right flank, Yaya Toure maintained his attacking central midfield role, while Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez started up front once again.

As City’s fitness increases with every passing game, Aguero’s influence continues to grow. Yesterday, he produced a masterclass and played a part in all three of his side’s goals – a clear indication of his menace ahead of the new season. Within the first 10 minutes he had a goal disallowed for offside and also hit the bar before a fantastic solo effort opened the scoring on 17 minutes; dancing round four opposition defenders, the Argentine found the net after executing a deft chip over the keeper to grab his second in the past three games.

City went in at the break one up but Aguero then turned creator just three minutes into the second-half, teeing up Tevez for the second. Only four minutes later, the former Atletico Madrid was at it again – this time a superb chip found Johnson inside the box and the winger wrong-footed the keeper to notch City’s third. Roberto Mancini made six changes as the game progressed and, much to the home side’s relief, withdrew Aguero after 70 minutes; the hosts’ late consolation failed to take the shine off a strong display from the Premier League champions, who have now won three in a row and conceded a single goal in their last four matches.

Post-match, Mancini revealed that Kompany’s calf problem is “nothing serious”, while going on to praise the performances of his front pair ahead of the new season, saying:

We were confident two weeks ago and I’m even more confident today. Sergio played very well and his partnership with Carlos has continued from last season. They scored a goal each today which is good. Hopefully we can continue his good form in the coming season.

Man City Starting XI: Pantilimon (Johansen 75); Savic, K Toure (Boyata 76), Zabaleta; A Johnson, Razak, Y Toure (Scapuzzi 58), Suarez (Evans 64) , Kolarov; Tevez (Mancini 76), Aguero (Lopes 70)

In Other News…
Reports in the Mail suggest Gareth Bale has escaped serious injury after Charlie Adam’s tackle in Spurs’ goalless draw with Liverpool on Saturday. The Welshman has returned to light training after scans allayed fears of a possible lengthy absence ahead of the new season – Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas played down the suggestion of the matter being reported to the FA but once again called for Adam to make an apology:

Needless to say, we are extremely relieved Gareth has not been seriously injured. There is previous history between the two players on the challenge that was done I think three years ago. Will we take it any further? We are discussing it within the club but in my opinion, the matter is dealt. But it would be extremely human for Charlie to come out with an apology. But you can’t force people to say anything and we will have to wait and see.

Danny Graham is such a dull pick and no one knows if he's assured game time under laudrup, he don't take pens, set pieces, you are paying 6m for someone who runs about upfront and gets the odd goal.

May aswell go for Ricardo Vaz Te who is cheaper, has fixtures just as good and scored a lot last year so is coming into the league confident and assured of his place.

He signed in jan and pretty much played all the games and scored a lot of goals, at 5.5m if he misses the odd game in 6 you won't cry, if Graham scores 1 goal in 6 you will cry.

Finding picking 2 heavy hitting midfielders (8.5m and up) very difficult. For each mid I can see something going wrong or not working out in the short term...

Hazard - Might not start both DGW games, may take time to settle into PL.
Mata - Could be rested after Olympics.
Bale - Possibly injured for start of season.
Dempsey - If move to Liverpool goes through his appeal decreases dramatically.
Kagawa/Valencia/Nani/Young - may be rotated, too much competition for places.
Walcott - With no RVP he won't have someone of that quality finishing his assists.

Only good pick seems to be Silva. Apologies if I'm being too pesimistic but really starting to re think my team...

I've just gone with Hazard (switch to Bale GW3 if fit) and then 6.5,6.5,6.0,5.0 in midfield.

      Lots of good mid-priced options.

That's my worry too, but then if you go with Silva/Rooney instead of Kun/(any from above) you've got to find another 1-1.5m from somewhere. I think Valencia and Bale (if fit) probably have the least doubts.

Who would you start out of N’Zogbia and Noble for GW1?

Ideally I want to start N’Zogbia as I think he’ll do well early on in the season and I expect Villa to beat West Ham GW1 but would it be a waste to have Noble at home and not play him, even if he is my cheap mid?

It’s making me tempted to do Noble -> Maloney, just because I find it easier to bench him!

I have the same problem, but I asked for advice last night and most people said to play Noble, as they thought West Ham would win. I then checked the FFS ticker and saw that West Ham’s opponent is easier than Villa’s. So, at the minute, I have Noble in.

That's their view. Go with who you think will do best!

4 goals, 8 assists, plenty of bonus points, set piece potential.

Good Euro tournament, is a guy on the up, could have a great second season.

Newcastle have 3 of first 5 at home....can easily take down Chelsea or Spurs too.

He seems popular in general, but unpopular here at FFS

    Hello everyone,

I'm new to this site but if you don't mind, what I'm going to do is check out your teams. Copy and paste the one I think is best, then ask you to rate it.

I look forward to working with you.

Quite like my latest stab at this...

    Foster - Begovic

    Ivanovic - Hangeland - Colocinni - Cuellar - Clyne

    Bale - Silva - Mata - Maloney - Guthrie

    Rooney - Tevez - Petric

    Have been contemplating:

    Rooney, Tevez and Silva
    to
    Aguero, Torres, Valencia

but trying to avoid the overly generic team (as they rarely do brilliantly) 🙂

Thoughts? And yes, I know Tev is risky

This is essentially the same team as mine, although I'm going with Kagawa instead of Val and pushing the extra 0.5 into defence.

Any thoughts? Any feedback much appreciated!

    Begovic / Jaaskelainen

    Clichy / Cole A / Hangeland / Cuellar / Wilson

    Silva / Hazard / Taarabt / N'Zogbia / Noble

    Graham / Torres / Aguero

Plan is GW 2: Aguero --> Ade (assuming spurs sign him) saving 2mil then GW 3 the standard Torres -->Rooney

The early season fixture list is making this initial team selection a right painful experience.

No big team with a consistent set of good fixtures (maybe Spurs and Chelsea - but lots of unknowns at both clubs currently) is making it very difficult to settle on which players to select as the "big hitters" and I find myself chopping and changing regularly.

I'm wondering if an early-ish wildcard is in order. Does anybody know of a "watershed" moment on the fixture list where the fixtures of some big teams look irresistable?

Taking a look at the fixtures, I think only Tottenham has good early fixtures out of any of the big teams (ars, che, liv, mci, mun, new). Anyone disagree?
