We’re rounding up what we know on the team news front ahead of Blank Gameweek 28 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Summaries of the pre-match press conferences on Thursday and Friday will supersede this piece and help finalise our predicted line-ups but in the meantime, this article takes an early look at the injury situation across the top flight.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST V NEWCASTLE UNITED

We’ve actually already had one pre-match press conference as of Wednesday evening, and that was held by Nottingham Forest’s Steve Cooper.

The Forest boss said that Brennan Johnson (groin) was “unlikely” to face Newcastle on Friday, although he didn’t completely rule out the prospect of that happening and we know from experience that Cooper can be economical with the truth.

“He had his scan. It’s unlikely that he will be involved at the weekend but he has a small chance.

“We’re not completely ruling him out, but when you walk off with a muscle injury it can take a bit longer than a week to recover.” – Steve Cooper on Brennan Johnson, speaking on Wednesday

Loanee Chris Wood is ineligible to face his parent club, while Willy Boly (hamstring), Scott McKenna (hamstring), Dean Henderson (thigh), Giulian Biancone (ACL) and Omar Richards (leg) remain unavailable. Wayne Hennessey (knee) will also have a fresh problem assessed but Cheikhou Kouyate (hamstring) and Taiwo Awoniyi (groin) should be much closer to involvement after recent returns to training.

Joelinton completes a two-match ban, while Anthony Gordon (ankle) will now be out until April and joins Emil Krafth (knee) and Harrison Ashby (hamstring) on the sidelines.

ASTON VILLA V BOURNEMOUTH

Philippe Coutinho (hamstring) and Boubacar Kamara (ankle) are still out, while it remains to be seen if Leander Dendoncker is any nearer to recovery after he sustained a hand injury in a recent domestic incident.

Illia Zabarnyi (ankle) has been back in training as he awaits his first appearance since joining in January, while Junior Stanislas (knock) and Marcus Tavernier (hamstring) were both hoping to recover before the March international break so may feature.

Hamed Traore‘s (muscle) availability is unknown at the time of writing, while Adam Smith may need assessing after appearing to struggle with injury before being replaced in the win over Liverpool. Jordan Zemura was left out of the squad last weekend amid an ongoing contract stand-off.

BRENTFORD V LEICESTER CITY

Vitaly Janelt came off with a knee injury in the first half of Brentford’s 2-0 win over Southampton and will be assessed in the next few days, while Mads Roerslev missed both of the Bees’ Double Gameweek 27 fixtures with a “slight” hamstring issue.

Thomas Strakosha (ankle) and Keane Lewis-Potter (knee) are the only other Brentford players on the sidelines.

Victor Kristiansen (ankle), Youri Tielemans (ankle), James Justin (Achilles) and Sammy Braybrooke (knee) remain out for the Foxes, while Wout Faes serves a one-match ban after his dismissal last weekend.

SOUTHAMPTON V TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Tino Livramento (knee) and Juan Larios (muscle) are the only definite Southampton absentees for the visit of Spurs but the Saints will have to check on Kyle Walker-Peters, who got a “kick” on his hamstring in the midweek defeat to Brentford.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles missed both Double Gameweek 27 fixtures with an unspecified issue but was at the “late fitness test” stage in midweek so might not be far away.

Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring), Rodrigo Bentancur (knee), Hugo Lloris (knee) and Yves Bissouma (ankle) all remain on the medium-to-long-term injury list but Emerson Royal (knock) could return after missing last Saturday’s clash with Nottingham Forest; he was spotted back in training this week.

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS V LEEDS UNITED

Diego Costa (knee), Hugo Bueno (hamstring), Chiquinho (knee) and Sasa Kalajdzic (knee) are still on the injury list, while it remains to be seen if the “little problem” that forced Pablo Sarabia to miss the Newcastle game still keeps him out.

Boubacar Traore (groin) could be back after a return to training.

Adam Forshaw (hip) and Stuart Dallas (knee) are still out, while it’s been a month since Liam Cooper (muscle) was in a matchday squad as the club captain’s availability remains in question.

Tyler Adams is the newest addition to the injury list with a hamstring problem that will keep him out until after the international break.

CHELSEA V EVERTON

Reece James should be back after returning to training, while Mason Mount (abdomen) was also sighted on the grass this week so could return alongside his compatriot.

Edouard Mendy (finger), Cesar Azpilicueta (head) and N’Golo Kante (hamstring) have all been back in training of some variety; Kante, indeed, has been pencilled in for a return this weekend.

That only leaves the availability of Raheem Sterling (hamstring) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (back) in question, after they were named big doubts for the win over Leicester and ultimately missed out.

Thiago Silva (knee) and Armando Broja (ACL) are the only players definitely on the sidelines at the time of writing.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (hamstring) should be a lot closer to featuring after a positive-sounding update from Sean Dyche ahead of the Brentford game, while only match fitness is between Nathan Patterson (knee) and a competitive playing comeback.

Andros Townsend (ACL) remains unavailable.

ARSENAL V CRYSTAL PALACE

Mohamed Elneny (knee) is out long term, while Eddie Nketiah (ankle) will miss Gameweek 28 as he remains a “few weeks away” from a return.

“He’s getting better. He’s still in the boot so still a few weeks away. We need to be patient – it was a nasty injury. It’s a challenge that Eddie’s got ahead of him, but thank God he could have been worse so he’s not in a bad place.” – Mikel Arteta on Eddie Nketiah, speaking on Wednesday

Will Hughes and James McArthur missed all of Palace’s Double Gameweek 27 due to illness, while Vicente Guaita (hamstring) sat out the midweek clash with Brighton.

Guaita’s absence, plus that of medium-term absentee Sam Johnstone (calf), saw teenage goalkeeper Joe Whitworth line up to face the Seagulls.

Loanee Albert Sambi Lokonga is ineligible to face his parent club, meanwhile.

3 points separate me and my ML work rival, Tom from Who Got The Assist.

He's ahead now after Toney wrecking things for me.

He's got a BB left, I've got a FH. Who's got the advantage? Our teams are near identical.

You'd think so, but I'm concerned about his BB on the DGW coming up. I'm thinking to just match him through those GWs and try and find the difference when he has to lose his United/City/Brighton assets.

When are you planning to FH? 32? I think to try & stretch its value maybe load up on players who blank that week that he'll find it difficult to hold onto - that way you maybe get a slight edge in 34 as well when those teams double

I was thinking that, alternative option is play it during a GW where our teams essentially their attacks Vs defence (think it's the City Vs Arsenal GW)

    A - Haaland > Watkins and roll 1 FT into DGW29 (play 10 in GW28)

I’m thinking of wdcarxing as I can’t get 10 out this weekend.

    Ward kepa
    Chilwell/Gabriel/cash/trips/fofana
    Martinelli/Maddison/Mitoma/Saka
    Rashford
    Toney/kane/Watkins

This gives me a good team for this weekend and with one change the following week gives me 12 doublers the following week with a juicy bench boost.
Is this a decent plan or an you see a chink in the armour?

Depends on how many hits you'd need to field 10 based on your current squad, I guess... to justify WCing.

But if you are determined on WC, then it looks great!

For those of you currently with 2-3 Brentford defs (inc. goalie), what are your thoughts about bringing in Maddison (or other Leicester attacker)?

To much of a gamble to look at Almiron or Buendia instead? Billing? To avoid the internal conflict.

Newcastle fan here. For me, Almiron is too much of a risk for FPL at the minute. Howe is doing some tinkering with our front three, and there is currently a chance to see any one of Almiron, Gordon or Murphy in that position. Heck, it's really unlikely but we could even see Isak play there if Howe decides to double up on Wilson + Isak. At the minute I don't think that anyone apart from Bruno G. and maybe Isak is nailed on in the Newcastle attack until we see a few more games. Sure, Almiron is probably preferred for the right wing and is likely to feature in multiple games but like I said, he's too big a risk for FPL right now.

You're welcome! I want to caveat that I could see Almiron starting all 3 games over the next 2 GWs but it's a big risk. I'd keep Rashford too, no need to jump ship on Man U (I'm getting Rashford back in for DGW29). Looking at your team I reckon you'd be better rolling the FT and having 2 for next week, better to set up for the double than have one extra player for the single. If you did want to do a transfer, you could do what I did this week and do Haaland > Watkins but that's contingent on you having the money ITB to get him back after the DGW29. The other option I see some doing is Estupinan > Chelsea def (Chilwell safer pick than James).

March owner here. I don't know why Twitter consensus is that March would have gotten bonuses from Leeds game.

-Top3 baps were 31,30 and 29. All non defenders.
    - March ended with 10 and mid gets 18 from the goal = 28. No winning goal bonus obviously.

    Am I missing something?

Sad really Im an owner but people need to let it go. There is already a precident set on this with retro changes. To me the best managers roll with the punches like good poker players, realise you can be on the right or wrong side of bad luck and dont go ‘on tilt’

There is a case to correct if done before a gameweek closes so long as baps can be worked out properly. But the main point is handling adversity of all kinds well because its gonna come knocking at your door every season

Bad luck is when Mane you've just TC'd pulls a hammy 20 minutes into a game.

Not being awarded points from a player who scored a goal is simply unfair.

March was my captain this week, my differential captain and I really needed those points to climb up my main cash ML - I feel robbed by stupid lazy ruling from fpl who didn't mind chopping and changing rules with extra WC's\FH's but are too stuck In their bottoms to do what's right.

        1. Free Hat

Have to agree on this one.
Im a march owner and not so upbeat by it,
but it would be a whole other story if that 5 points would make the difference between winning a cash league or something.

Rules are rules indeed, but this one seems flawed and needs altering. Doesnt make any sense that a player gets an official goal but you dont get any points for it. Game should adapt as well.

People say its only a game. Exactly, its only a free game, so not a huge deal just updating the scores in the same gw.
They have altered a lot of rules before.

But it is what it is. I may sound frustrated, but im really not.
More annoyed at people who keep saying let it go, probably dont own march and would be the first to moan about it when they would own him...

As a March owner I was slightly annoyed by what happened but you can't change rules that have been set at the start of a season during the season. This should be looked at for next season though, so things can be changed until the end of a GW IMO.

Yeah I think for GW29 in isolation I prefer Navas. Or Raya if you want someone more playable long-term / fixture proof

i cant see navas keeping a clean sheet in either of his games tbh, if your looking on taking a punt could maybe try areola

    Raya Ward
    Tripps Zinc Mee Estupinan Dalot
    Martinelli Ode Rash Mcallister Maddison

Dalot and Haaland to Chilwell and Watkins? Yay nor nay?

Worth a hit to field 11?

    Haaland, TAA -> Watkins, Chillwell.

Will have plenty of money to get Halland back in GW30 for either Toney, Watkins or Havertz

Brighton midfielder > Maddison worth a -4? Other option is field 10 this week.

Fielding 10 is (comparatively) fine. You’ll probably want those Bri mids for 29, and then hold a couple of their assets til 33.

Cannot decide between Watkins and Havertz.

I got Watkins in this week. Will do Toney —> Havertz next week.

I’ve got the transfer available, I’m chasing, I don’t like T’s fixtures that much, and that yellow is incoming!

Moved up 3.5m places since the restart (let’s not worry about OR…). Gonna cling to that as my main achievement this year.

How’s everyone else’s second half of the season going?

3.5 million rank up to 679k so a good jump but still stuck in no man’s land.

      Rough: FPL thought otherwise...

Rough. March (c) not given the goal vs Leeds. Rules are rules, though. Salah pen miss (got his haul last week so only fair I guess - can't be getting too many points from my differentials).

Smooth. Every single person in my main ML has the same team and no WC left, so if I can beat one of them, I beat them all (or lose to them all). WC in back pocket. FH to try and go a bit rogue this week.

      Smooth:
104 points , 72 of them from my Brighton and Brentford six.
      Up from 685k to 476k.
Back in the top 500k for the first time since Gameweek 2.

      Rough:
My differential captain Estupinan has only blanked once in his last eight matches - in his first match of this Gameweek.
The result was that he was slightly outscored by four of my other players (Kane, Toney, Mitoma and March).
I completely wasted my Bench Boost back in Gameweek 2, so I'll probably drop back out of the top 500k in DGW29 when everyone else plays theirs.

Smooth: 117 pts and a huge green. Pick the right captain, huge differential.

Rough: FPL decided to cheat me out of my captain points.

smooth - 101 points and a green arrow
rough - Solly March goal denial - bad luck he won't awarded the goal within the hour after the GW that is, I get it was within the rules

Smooth - 90 points overall, picked highest scoring player in my team as captain.

Rough - 12 points on my bench and small red arrow dropped to 11k from around 7k before yesterday.

      Rough,
Last GW, lowest rank of season (over 9million)
      Smooth - after 1 FT
104 points, highest GW rank of season. (267K)
So back where I was after GW 25.
Hopefully move on upwards this GW.

      58 (-4) PTS. 166k >>>>> 406k rank.

Rough: Arrgghh! Couldn't afford Toney so went with Mbeumo, complete disaster! Season high of 15k a distant memory now, will struggle to get back inside 100k!

Smooth: Arsenal power on 🙂 still top!
