The 2022/23 UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-finals begin this week – which means it’s also time for the competition’s official Fantasy game to return.

With prizes dished out every Matchday, UCL Fantasy also offers an incentive for managers to belatedly enter a team even if you are yet to sign up.

Here, our in-house expert FPL Reactions takes a look at Matchday 9 and its most appealing assets.

GOALKEEPERS

Firstly, we must ensure there is a playing goalkeeper on each night. That way, we can swap from the bench if the Tuesday pick fails to return. Benfica play on the first night, a side that has kept five clean sheets during their last ten matches in all competitions.

It’s lower than their usually impressive standards but they’re at home to an Inter side that has failed to find the net in three of their last six games. It suggests that Odysseas Vlachodimos (€5.0m) could be a favourable option.

On Wednesday, it’s time for Serie A leaders Napoli, who have shown relentless form both domestically and in Europe. One of their strengths is in defence, with a huge seven clean sheets collected in their last ten. With that in mind, Alex Meret (€5.0m) looks like a great option.

DEFENDERS

One of the first names in our Matchday 9 drafts should be Alejandro Grimaldo (€5.4m). The full-back has produced two goals and three assists throughout his eight Champions League games, with his UCL Fantasy explosiveness showcased in his 20-point haul of Matchday 1.

Another defensive essential is Napoli’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo (€5.2m). The Italian has racked up four double-digit hauls so far.

Manchester City may be facing German giants Bayern Munich but a home fixture suggests clean sheet potential. The cheapest way into their backline is left-back Nathan Ake (€4.4m). The Dutchman also has an eye for goal, bagging a recent brace on international duty.

Inter play with a back-three system and this allows their wing-backs to venture into some of the most advanced positions on the pitch. Because of this, budget-friendly Robin Gosens (€4.8m) could be a clever pick. Then there’s Real Madrid, where opponents Chelsea, have shown huge inconsistencies in front of goal – their standout defensive option is Dani Carvajal (€5.4m).

MIDFIELDERS

Vinicius Junior (€10.1m) should be one of the first names on our team sheets for this round, having banked a return in all but one of his Champions League appearances so far. Six goals and three assists mean it’s nine goal contributions from eight games.

Man City will be a tough task for Bayern, especially away. However, ‘Mr UCL Fantasy’ Leroy Sane (€9.3m) faces his former club and has also cemented his position in the first team. Opposing him is someone who can exploit Bayern’s defensive inconsistencies by feeding one of the world’s most relentless forwards. Kevin De Bruyne (€10.5m) has produced four assists and two goals in his last three matches, emphasising his uptake in form.

One half of Napoli’s deadly duo is Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (€5.9m). Not only does the Georgian take his side’s penalties but he has also picked up 12 goals and ten assists from 25 domestic league games.

Meanwhile, Benfica have amassed 25 goals in their last ten, so investing in their frontline could be key. Their standout attacker is Joao Mario (€6.4m), who is another on penalty duties with an additional route to points. With three double-digit hauls in his last three UCL matches, he could be deemed essential.

FORWARDS

FPL team news: Injury updates on Haaland, Rashford, Pope and Mount

It’s very difficult to exclude Karim Benzema (€10.7m). The Frenchman has accumulated 11 goals and two assists in his last ten matches and takes spot kicks. He faces an unsteady Chelsea backline and could have a great time this week.

Another essential for Matchday 9 is the Man City phenomenon Erling Haaland (€11.0m). He has bagged a whopping 30 goals domestically and proved his UCL explosiveness by recently scoring five times against RB Leipzig, claiming 25 points.

Finally, investing in the focal point of Benfica’s attack could be beneficial against Inter. The Italians have kept just one clean sheet in their last six matches and could struggle to stop in-form Goncalo Ramos (€9.0m).

There's been many accounts of children being able to describe in great detail of their past life.
Also many accounts of people who "came back from the dead" being able to describe exactly what loved ones were doing at the time of their passing on, even describing what family members who lived thousands of miles away, were wearing and exactly what they were talking about at that moment too.

Grealish going to be very popular, all the content creators are pushing him

    @BigManBakar
Lei are 19th for chances conceded down their right flank post restart. Also 19th for xGc in away games this season.

Grealish has a xGi per 90 of 0.71 in his previous 4 home games, with a big chance involvement in each.

No brainer for those on FH32 if Rashford is out long term.

    Anyone who has
Haaland and a TC to use is really hoping for a Bayern win tonight.
A TC on Haaland for GW34 may represent the biggest haul from that chip in history! The Sanchez days when he got 5 for Arsenal still my record.

If City progress then the CL semis don't take place until after GW35 and GW36, I don't think that should realistically impact Haaland's DGW34 minutes, especially if City avoid defeat against Arsenal in GW33

I disagree. I think if he’s fit and (more so) firing, he starts. He’s always been pretty fit and Pep will want to keep him active. I’ll be bringing him in this week

really? even if he plays 90 tonight, and city have a home tie against statistically the worst side in the division since the world cup break and a big fixture congestion looming, including a return trip to bayern.. if your not going to rest players then then when???

Just my gut. Momentum and the fact they can’t afford any slip ups. They’ve had the occasional freak result before (Saints, Palace, Everton). It’s taken Grealish this long to deliver. Why take him out when he’s unplayable?

          1. boc610
            • 13 Years

the exact same thing has been said about foden and mahrez when on similar hotstreaks and it didnt stop him then. i know second guessing pep is next to impossible but i feel like there has been lots of examples when he's done this very thing.

            1. GC123
              • 4 Years
              2 years, 8 months ago

Agreed. I could be wrong. I just think Pep is less Pep-like this year. I think he realises how big the threat is from Arsenal. And they will sniff blood after Arsenal lost their two goal lead. They will want to capitalise on that

    3. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Who would play on the left though? I don't think Pep will risk Palmer or a front 3 like the one suggested above.

I mean, of course I never feel totally confident with Pep, but it does look like he has fewest options to rotate in this position. And ultimately I think its worth the risk to just get City attackers asap. I hesitated over Maddison - KDB this week due to rotation fears & kind of regret it.

Would really welcome thoughts on plan below, particularly on whether GW 32 team is strong enough.

I've still got FH and WC left, and had been planning to deadend into GW33, WC34 and then FH in 37 as I've got a route to a pretty good GW32 team with only a -4. Obviously limits upside in GW32, but gives me a chance to maximise DGWs 34, 36 and 37.

However...Rashford's injury is making me reconsider...

    Original plan:

    GW31 Save FT
    GW32 Bruno, Rashford + Haaland > Salah, Saka + Toney 11 playing for a -4

Leaving me with a GW32 team of:

    Raya (Kepa)
    Trippier Botman White Pinnock (Estu)
Saka Salah Martinelli (Mac Allister March)
    Kane Watkins Toney

Not sure that's massively different to what my FH team would look like given Liverpool's poor form, but it means I have a weaker team in 31 (and possibly 33 if I hold of WC-ing until 34)

    1. Pegboy
      • 15 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Or I might just do Rashford > Grealish now. Save myself a -4 for Saka next week and go with 10 players, and then at least I have Grealish in GW31 and 33.

Would be a big punt to do Rashford to Mahrez when I already have Grealish and Haaland, but it's either him or Olise.

    I can't afford Saka, and I'm not FHing in GW32 so I don't want a Brighton mid.

If you don’t want a brighton mid because you’re not on FH32 why would you then want Mahrez? Olise is cheap, nailed and playing well I wouldn’t risk Mahrez around a UCL fixture

Definitely hoping Toney is suspended for it to make the Jesus in move easier.
Not massively expecting a spurs win but fancy porro to cause Dan burn some problems at least.

Don’t like the trippier Vs Kane conflict on FH and prefer Kane in that scenario. Maybe trippier is the answer to my 3rd defender problem lol.
Big toney fan and all but yeah he could well become Jesus depending what’s going on with his trial and potential ban. Villa Vs Brentford sounds like a goalfest in my head but maybe I’m overestimating Thomas Frank

Aren't Chelsea at home to Brighton?! Surely Chilwell.

Right. Be surprised if he misses another one so soon. Is return C.L. fixture next week, yeah? Am worried about James myself now...

Chelsea are playing crap. Brighton are playing well. It's not hard to figure out.

Saw a very interesting thread on Twitter last night (credit to FPL Bernie) regarding Saka and Odegaard and how little they were involved in Arsenal play against Liverpool. Some suggested / thought that it was merely a case of targeting Martinelli against TAA, but it seems like this is a big part of Saliba being unavailable. Saliba has a much bigger passing range than Holding and links up with White, Odegaard and Saka (or one of those that then in turn links up with one of the other two) a lot more than Holding, who seems to primarily aim his passes out towards the left (Zinchenko and Gabriel, hardly any passing lanes to Partey who was directly in front of him were marked). Wishing I had had an inkling of this before captaining Saka this week, but something to keep in mind for other owners of any of those 3 Arsenal assets.

Nice summary, I'm on the fence with Saka & Ode atm, have had them pretty much all season. Would rather have just Mart now I think! but I have a Rashford issue this week

People are realllllly over thinking this

Saka Martinelli Rashford Salah have been consistently the best 4 mids all year

I have had them for the majority and can never understand the trigger happyness of people moving X in and thinking Y is off from

Im looking to take a hit to get Saka back in this week

Good observation from Bernie. He also must consider the defensive qualities of the specific opponent in these situations and the remit of the Arsenal players mentioned, their licence if you like.

I wouldn't look into it too much. It's not long ago we were all getting rid of Martinelli and Saka was the man to have. Saka also had an 18 point haul recently.

Basically they will both haul at times. None of them are better than the other.

        Exactly , set and forget.

In an ideal world if i knew Lewis would play league games when Pep rotates for CL id go for something like this until season end

        Iverson
        White TAA trippier
        Rashford Mac Salah Saka Martinelli
        Kane Haaland
        Iverson Ferguson, Kilman , Lewis

Even with this Saka was a few cms and a decent pass from getting 15 odd points

£12.1m and Pep has benched him twice in past 5 games even when he was fit.

He’s a great option for sure if he plays but I would always be worried about minutes.

This was reported after Pep benched KDB for the Palace game a month ago, you just never what’s in Pep’s head.

I'm keen. Was considering bringing him in last week but it was just UCL rotation fears that made me stall it

Imagine city had Mahrez and KDB playing every week close to 90min and have pens

Cannot understand the draw people have to moving in and out Arsenal mids - i have had them for all but 2 weeks and will have Saka and Martinelli till the end , taking a -4 to get them back this week. Grealish is not in the same ball park

Its a rather simple equation - they will be both in the top 4 mids come season end and its a toss up risk that any mid even with the dgw will outscore them.

Annoyed at myself that i covered brighton double mids to move them out but lesson learned

Chasing in a ML therefore rethinking FH32 and thinking to do a -4 over the next 2 weeks to give me the below and then FH34. Thoughts?

    Rashford & Havertz > Olise & Darwin - GW 31
    Sahw > Gabriel - GW 32

    GW32 team
    Raya
    Cofual / Trippier / Castagne / Gabriel
    Maddison / Olise/ Bowen / Saka
    Kane / Darwin

    Kepa / Haaland / Mitoma / Estupinan

      Not great moves

      Id get andreas over Olise,

Trent is a better use of funds than Darwin also

hmmm will relook. Chasing means i feel like I'm making wild punts which in fairness never seem to pay off so maybe need to be a bit more controlled with it

This is probably the best WC I've ever had after one week. Every transfer worked or was at least neutral.

    7 Apr 15:44 Haaland Toney GW30
    7 Apr 15:44 Andreas Mitoma GW30
    7 Apr 15:44 Grealish Mac Allister GW30
    7 Apr 15:44 Rashford Saka GW30
    7 Apr 15:44 Mings Mee GW30
    7 Apr 15:44 Trippier Shaw GW30
    7 Apr 15:44 Iversen Steele GW30
    7 Apr 15:44 De Gea Leno GW30
