It’s been two wins from two matches for Crystal Palace since Roy Hodgson returned to south London last month.

This upturn in form happens to coincide with some Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers needing a cheap enabler to accommodate the collection of a few premium assets like Erling Haaland (£12.2m), Harry Kane (£11.7m), Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) and Bruno Fernandes (£9.6m).

Although Michael Olise‘s (£5.4m) three assists against Leeds United have led to over 88,000 transfers so far this week, identically-priced Eberechi Eze (£5.4m) is getting less attention.

In the absence of Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) – expected to be out until around Gameweek 34 with a groin injury – it’s time to dive deeper into assessing which of Eze and Olise is the best way to invest in Palace’s midfield.

All the numbers and graphics from this piece are taken from our Premium Members Area, which you can check out yourself with a free trial.

INVESTING IN PALACE

Hodgson spent almost four seasons at Selhurst Park between 2017 and 2021, before replacement Patrick Vieira took them to 12th place – just one point short of their best 38-game Premier League total.

Yet his second campaign was a lot tougher. A freefall of 12 winless games in all competitions dragged them into relegation danger, so Vieira was dismissed to make way for Hodgson’s surprise return.

Immediately, his impact brought a late 2-1 win over Leicester City – where their 31 shots were the second-highest by one team this season – before coming from behind to thrash Leeds 5-1.

The upcoming fixtures look good in their quest to secure top-flight survival, a straightforward run without any Blank or Double Gameweeks. So grabbing Eze or Olise could quickly pay off.

GOAL THREAT

Over Hodgson’s two matches, both have had six goal attempts and, using our Members Area, we can see that Eze has generally been more likely to score – like he did at Leeds.

Touches in box (GW29/30)Shots in box (GW29/30)On target (GW29/30)Big chances (GW29/30)Expected goals (GW29/30)
Eze92410.86
Olise63100.31

Looking beyond that small sample will need ‘minutes per’ data, as Eze was demoted to a substitute during Vieira’s final months after Olise began the season there.

Eze is up 5-2 on goals and scores every 386.4 minutes, with a shot once every 40.3 minutes – both better than Olise’s numbers (1018.5 and 56.6 respectively).

Although an Achilles injury kept Eze out for almost all of last season, his debut Premier League campaign brought four goals and eight assists, whilst Olise’s first season saw him net twice and set up six more in 2021/22.

CREATIVITY

Moving on to assists, we quickly see this is the latter’s favourite area. The weekend haul means his eight assists are now only bettered by Kevin De Bruyne (£12.1m), Bukayo Saka (£8.6m), Leandro Trossard (£6.7m) and Andreas Pereira (£4.3m).

Chances created (GW29/30)Big chances created (GW29/30)Expected assists (GW29/30)Expected goal involvement (GW29/30)
Eze600.161.02
Olise931.041.35

Not only does Olise get the nod for creativity, but it also allows his expected goal involvement (xGI) to overtake Eze’s over the two Hodgson matches.

Overall, the France under-21 international is 52-44 ahead, creating 2.30 chances and 0.40 big chances per 90 minutes. Eze is Palace’s next-best player with 2.05 and 0.28.

When it comes to set pieces, they seem to share free-kick responsibilities but Olise has taken over corner duty since Hodgson came in.

OTHER FACTORS

Additionally, the attacking half of touch heatmaps show that right-winger Olise touches the ball further forward and out wide, with Eze – who has been operating as a ‘number eight’ under Hodgson – further back but from a more central position.

Adding fellow cheap midfielder Jordan Ayew (£5.2m) into the mix doesn’t do much, as the 31-year-old comes third-best in most of the interesting comparisons. He’s only best for shot accuracy (45%), goal conversion (15%) and penalty area touches (64).

Ayew did match Olise’s 14-point haul in Gameweek 30 by scoring twice, although it’s hard to know how secure his place will be once Zaha returns. After all, Ayew only netted once in Hodgson’s final season.

As mentioned, both Eze and Olise had spells on Vieira’s bench but the pair are now probably secure in their new boss’ preferred XI. The rotation factor can be removed, for the time being at least.

FINAL THOUGHTS

At the same price with similar minutes and only one FPL point between them, it’s basically goals versus assists for managers weighing up their cheap Crystal Palace enabler.

Eze’s goal and shot numbers are best for both Hodgson’s two matches and over the whole season but Olise – as shown at Leeds – is a superb creator who takes more set pieces.

“What I make of him is that I think he is an enormous talent – he has got a great possibility to have a wonderful career and a wonderful future. We can only hope we at Crystal Palace can give him that platform.” – Roy Hodgson on Michael Olise

Olise playing in the front three (rather than as a number eight like Eze) and being on indirect set plays perhaps gives him the slightest of edges but there’s precious little in it.

The team is scoring loads, has regained confidence and can continue this into their good run of upcoming fixtures. Eze has been restored into the line-up and Olise is bamboozling defenders – those managers who only have one of the cheap Brighton and Hove Albion midfielders could do a lot worse than invest in one of these too.

    Best transfer please?

    A) Akanji in for Mee
    B) Ake in for Chilwell
    C) Martinelli in for Rashford (Would need to -4 for Rashford back if fit for 34)

    Thanks a lot.

I'm a little bit at a loss at the moment and would appreciate some help. With the team posted below, is the better strategy to FH 32 or 34. Currently own 8 blankers in 32 and 7 doublers in 34. Would need two hits to get 11 out for 32 and can then FH in the double. Or I use FT to prep for the double now and FH in 32.

Not sure if it helps, but I have a similar team and I'm focusing on bringing in in form players and also cover GW34. This means FH in GW32.

This is tough and very marginal, it probably depends what you want to do this week as am not sure I would be playing Maddison (with Rashford out)

If you FH32 then I’d get a Man City player in for Rashford, if you FH34 then I’d look at Martinelli.

I think Salah will be desirable for GW34 so maybe see if you FH32 how you would get there, otherwise I would FH34 to get him in that way.

Yeah I want rid of Maddison or Rash this week either way. If I can get to Salah 34 then FH32 is probably the better strategy. Thanks for the help!

WC in 33 and no FH for 32

    a) roll transfer
    b) rash out to player for 31 + 32 only

    DDG (Neto)
    Trip, White, Mee (Estu, Zouma)
    Salah, Marti, Mitoma, MacA (Rash)
    Haaland, Toney, Kane

    Currently rolling as;
    - due to no FH, city mid not an option (have 9 players and 2 ft pre 32),
    - palace mid doesnt feel an upgade on MacA this week
    - allows to choose best option of Saka/Jesus for 32

So I got a bit carried away with Chelsea for GWs 28-9, and now have a decision to make with Chilwell & James. I was hoping that I could just forget about my current defence for the rest of the season:

    Trippier Shaw Estupinan James Chilwell

But now double Chelsea WBs is starting to feel quite a waste. I can't downgrade them both to fodder though since I still want cover for GWs 33 (Shaw), 35 (Trippier) & 36 (Estupinan). Chelsea's fixtures in these weeks are actually about as good as it gets, so if it weren't for Lampard and his threats to use his whole squad, I'd happily stick with one or both of Chilwell or James. Obviously if I need funds they're first on the chopping block, but if funds are no issue, would you replace one of them with an alternative defender for 33/5/6? Will be maxed out on City & BHA, so it'd have to be from someone like Palace, Man Utd or (dare I say) Spurs

I would look to move funds from your defence and consider a Newcastle defender (primarily due to DGW36)

Yeah maybe reverting to the Newcastle double up is the way to go actually - strong for 33 & 36, and Trippier in 35 is probably the most of playable of the 3 that I was looking to rotate. Thanks Tony

Doesn't feel like a priority given both have attacking threat in them and CL rotation no longer such a problem

Gap to CL might see more rotation as season is dead but for now that defence doesn't seem like any standout options other than maybe TAA for double (more of the same though!)

Cheers. Yeah I couldn't really think of any standout replacements either. Maybe Chilwell can stay. TAA might be possible but my 1st priority with any extra funds I generate will be KDB so I don't really want to go down the road of hits for Trent.

Will Rashford playing 180 mins GW34 anyway. Groin strains grade 1 (like Haaland and Zaha take 3 to 4 weeks to heal properly) Haaland had an International break and an extra week. GW29. So from 18th March (FA Cup) to 8th April, when he could have played 1st April but still didn't train all week. So exactly 3 weeks. It's close.

The plan to FH32 and more than capable replacement in March from the bench, this makes it easier for me to hold until 33/34 for more info. Not fussed about price drops as I value information more highly especially at this stage of the season. An exit route for me could be Foden.

Yeah, I would be like that too. Like Magnus Carlson. (who has given up, or taking 10 mins per transfer, taking punts) He was also either hacked or FPL Towers just screwed up GW15 with the late Haaland staring news.

I lost my FH that week so never used it.

So just playing my mini league. 25 points ahead, with TC (GW34 Haaland to go)

        He will FH32

If Rashford is out or playsa 30 min and 45 min cameos, then I can sell Rashford/Haaland/Chilwell for Edouard (playable bench fodder) Salah, and TAA. then GW33 is Kane to Haaland and see GW34

        Lots of hits coming

Best defender for under 4.7m going forward, was thinking Mitchell or guehi from palace as they have good fixtures or tarkowski? Or should I go for someone else?

work out which fixtures you need them to play and go for whoever has best in these games, likely Botman in that bracket

Not sure what to do this week. Need to use A FT because I'll FH next week. Any advice appreciated.

    Kepa,
    Trippier, Stones, Gabriel
    Saka, martinelli, Mitoma, Mahrez
    Kane, watkins, Haaland (c)

    Steele, Rashford, Schar, Henry

    1 FT, 1m ITB

Team is decent enough for this week and I don't have an easy move towards salah / Trent which I'll fund with kane in 33 or 34.

Could get a Brighton mid for rashford, but think I might be better off waiting for more news on rashford and if he looks to be coming back I'll move an arsenal mid out instead.

So I'm thinking Henry to Shaw to prep for 34 and just bench him this week. Thoughts?

Any issues with future transfers if moving funds to your defence to upgrade Henry to Shaw?

Don't think so but I'll have to get into my crellin spreadsheet to plan it out properly. If budget is an issue is there any other defender you'd go for?

I would actually consider selling Gabriel over Henry to Shaw if budget is an issue

Yeah I did think about that but arsenal's last few fixtures are really nice so was thinking just to let him run through. Having said that, if I drop him it gives me another option for a doubler in defence in 34. Let me think about it, thanks mate

I like Tony suggestion. Even though he will be on the bench, Home to Forest GW34 and West Ham GW is good (even this week away to wolves)

TEAM ATM (1FT 0.2m ITB NO FH left)
    DDG / Raya
    Chilwell, Trippier, Henry (Botman, Zouma)
    Saka, Macallister, Mitoma, Maddison (Rashford)
    Haaland (c), Kane, Watkins

    Maddison to
    1.Martinelli
    2.Olise (+4)
    3. do Rashford do both for a -4

I would keep Olise for 3 GW's (then sell Saka GW33) or Martinelli 2 weeks then bench (probably GW33) on 1 or 2.

    Leaning towards Martinelli

Alot of hit in the coming weeks.

I probably wouldn't start Olise over any of the other front 7, so just 1 I think. Even if its only short-term, I think Martinelli will be important for GW32 especially

Thanks that is what i am thinking. Covers FH32 a little

If Rashford is not good then i will sell Haaland/Rashford/Chilwell to Salah (c) , TAA, and Edouard. Playable fodder.

As you know i lost FH GW15. (Was miffed at the time, but world cup i was OK and carried on. Wish I had it now lol

Found out on Blackbox last night that Magnus Carlson. (who has given up, or taking 10 mins per transfer, taking punts etc) He was also screwed by FPL Towers just before the world cup. and lost one of his chips) , so perhaps the same GW????GW15 was the crashing week with the late Haaland starting news.

I know maddison has been a nightmare but he does have a fixture in 32 and after city his fixtures are really good. Maybe some new manager bounce as well. Since the other players you're considering to bring in don't have any doubles you might be better off keeping maddison and moving out rashford. Just my 2 cents.

Yes thanks. I would do that with a higher TV. I want Salah in 32 and can't afford him and Trent in GW32 if I keep Maddison over Rashford. Watch Maddison go mad GW32 to 35 lol

Because it would mean one less transfer if Rashford was fit for GW34.

I would keep Martinelli 2 weeks (well 3, which allows me to sell Saka instead), but keep Olise for Southampton (a) Everton (h) and Wolves (a). If i chose Martinelli he may play away to Man City

Martinelli is for next 2 games West Ham (a), and Southampton (h). and for 3 Gameweeks, keep Olise for Southampton (a) Everton (h) and Wolves (a).

It's another good article. I'm personally slightly more dubious of the Palace fixtures tho.

Wolves and Spurs away will be tough games to win.

Everton and West Ham at home both have something to fight for too.

yes, but despite everything West Ham and Everton (atm) is not doing much away from home). West Ham won with Fulham 77% possession.

West Ham scored and shut up shop.

Wolves and Spurs (and maybe Fulham when Mitro is back) are the more difficult ones. Palace never beat Spurs away lol

    Current team:

    Ddg
    Chilly, Trippier, Gabriel
    Saka, Rashford*, Mitoma, March, Grealish
    Haaland, Kane

    Iverson, Felix, Estupinan, Henry

    1FT, $0.2ITB

Going to FH 32 and WC either 33/34, so want to target players that have a good fixture this week and 33.

    What would you do:
    a) Chilly > City def
    b) Henry > Moreno
    c) Felix > Watkins/Isak
    d) Rashford > Martinelli (bad 33 fixture)
    e) Rashford to other?

    Thanks
