With many of our Gameweek 38 captaincy and transfer decisions likely to be determined by early team leaks, instead of focusing on the final round of matches, I’ll use this week’s piece to share my thoughts on some changes FPL could make to the game for the 2023/24 season.

I think we can all agree that this season won’t live long in the memory. Most engaged managers ended up with eight or nine of the same picks for the majority of the campaign and there wasn’t much need for ‘content creators’ to share their teams on Twitter after each deadline as they all looked the same anyway.

Erling Haaland (£12.4m) became auto-captain, the Arsenal and Brighton and Hove Albion guys performed extremely well at bargain prices, Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) rediscovered his best form at just £6.5m and Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) made a mockery of the Bonus Points System. These all contributed to a very ‘samey’ FPL campaign.

This summer would be a good time for a shake-up, in my opinion, following the last few interrupted seasons.

Good article. +1 for limiting the number of times a player can be captained, that would be a huge shake up.

I don’t like the idea of having more transfers, just means people can template their team quicker.

One more - have option of bench players sub in if players in starting 11 don’t start the match. That way the bench comes into play and adds another strategic component.

It is about time FPL Towers are more strict with entry rules. Their modus operandi is to keep more engaged through click bait rather than improve the product. It is touch and go whether I play next season as I have seen the gradual depreciation of what used to be fun.

More free transfers will only strengthen templates, making it easier to converge rather than diverge; premium differentials would be non-existent.

I think the one major change that would shake things up far more would be manual substitutions: the engaged players benefit more and it suddenly creates the need for a strong bench - players could afford fewer premiums.

Wouldn't that just lead to a new template of a 3.8m defender who will never start and then hand picking a bench option thereafter?

Some sensible and interesting ideas, but I can foresee database problems with allowing everyone to wait until the last hour before they make their changes. Nothing wrong with the idea, but there will be technical problems and loads of moaning from managers afterwards. A lot of it will be aimed at Barclays, despite it being a free game, and they won't want that.

The limited captain's thing is too restrictive. Maybe (just, maybe) you could have no consecutive week captains. But watching Haaland at home Vs Luton town in GW5 and not captaining him for fear of missing out on being able to captain him in a much later DGW is an extra level of strategy, pain and frustration no one wants

          20. The first Prize ("Winner's Prize") will be awarded to the Player who, according to the Premier League's determination, is at the top of the leaderboard published by the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 season.

          a) The Winner's Prize will be a 7-night break in the United Kingdom for two people to include VIP hospitality at two Premier League matches (the identity of which is determined by the Premier League) and visits to a selection of popular tourist attractions in the UK.

          b) The Winner's Prize includes travel (in the form of BritRail passes or similar and for those who live outside the UK only: one return flight for the winner and a guest to the UK), and seven nights' hotel accommodation on a bed & breakfast basis.

          c) The Winner's Prize is also likely to include a Hublot Watch, an EA SPORTS FIFA game, a laptop computer or sim-free smartphone, noise-cancelling Bluetooth headphones (in-ear or on-ear), Nike manager jacket and Fantasy Premier League goody bag consisting of a rucksack, t-shirt, mug, water bottle, stress ball, pen, pad and key ring. The precise specification and nature of these items shall be at the discretion of the Premier League.

there are other prizes for 2nd etc

I’d like to see the captaincy limited to 10 uses per player in a season.
That would make us stop and think and take more captain punts.

Limited uses works well in Fantasy Golf. Means saving the star players for the Majors or courses they do well on.
So research can be rewarded rather than just having the captain stuck on one or two players all season.

It's a level of planning that is beyond what makes the game fun for casuals. Maybe 19 times (i.e., you need to use at least two) but even then, not for me. Fixtures are not fixed enough. Even without dead monarchs and global pandemics, the fixture list changes with singles and doubles. Imagine not cpatianing Haaland all front half of the season only for City to be blown away by Stockport County in FA Cup 3rd Round and have no doubles?

    Interesting takes by FPL general

the FPL game has become very static for the last few years and I don’t think the game has managed to adapt to the huge increase of numbers of players.

This results, as a player, in the feeling that there’s now so much inertia in moving ranks that it makes the game very slow and somehow discouraging. Differences between top 500K teams are so thin in terms of player selection that no matter what your transfer will be next gameweek, it probably won’t have any impact in your ranks.

When most sports have lately moved towards a more dynamic approach (for instance the introduction of super Tie-break in tennis), FPL, by not reacting to the late but significant increase of players, has frozen its dynamics and the number of ghost teams by the end of Christmas should be a red sign.

Another factor that has not been addressed by FPL is the current depth of PL squads. If you want FPL players to watch the PL games, you should enable them to enjoy their FPL picks and allow them to jump on short terms punts. One could argue you can use hits, but how many times have I found myself fancying a move for an in-form player (Ramsey, Garnacho, Trossard, Eze etc..) which I knew would be for a 2-3 weeks but are already almost nullified by the -4. There’s simply no room for fancy play and short-term agressive approach in the way the game is ruled at the moment.

That inability to make moves makes the game very static, very mainstream. Sport is entertainment. Sports needs remontadas, sports needs drama. I believe FPL should re-think itself.

To make the game much more dynamic, I think FPL players should get 2FT per GW without any possibility to bank another 3rd for the next one. With only one WC per year. 2FT is a big game changer because it also gives you the opportunity to act on two lines out of GK/DEF/MID/FW whereas at the moment it takes you two GW to make a move that will eventually turn out to be so standard that it will take all the fun out of it.

That feeling it’s impossible to turn things around in FPL lately is going in the opposite way most of sports are leaning towards nowadays. I miss the feeling to watch and enjoy my differential performance, I miss the captaincy swings, I miss the mind games between mini-leagues players in their transfer strategy. I don’t think it should be as extreme as « a chip and a chair » in poker but a balance has to be found to make it less mainstream and more personal.
I have been playing FPL for thirteen years

The more advantages you give to FPL players, the easier it is to align an FPL team with the template.
2 FT a week? Then everybody is going to have the exact same 15 players at the top and they won't even need to plan ahead for it. That Ramsey punt, for example, won't be a punt - it will be a template, albeit short-term, move.

The only way to break template dominance is to create challenging conditions. Player prices/fewer chips and wildcards/ and rule changes that reward out of the box strategies.

      1. rnrd
        • 11 Years
        2 years, 6 months ago

I disagree with this because at the same time competitors try to align with the "template", your SFT enables you to move from punt to punts.
There's a huge pool of players in FPL that fall under the "purple patch" category and will go for a 3 or 4 GW streak and that it is ablsolutely impossible to jump onto with the current rules.

The template-stickers will always have a 2 or 3 weeks delay from your hot punts and once they get there, this punt will be dead as the player in question will go back to the bench or sub.

Look at how template the top 100K teams are today. This is a sign the current game dynamics are wrong.

It is an irony that all our complaints are backed up by the information available that was never there a few seasons ago.
EO, template, caveat, narrative are all words or phrases cropping up lately.
Bottom line, is the game needs a refresh.

          • 5 Years

No, because punts wouldn't be punts any more, they would be folded into the new template. Your jumping for purple patch players wouldn't be some genius short-term inspiration, it would be something that any engaged player would do. Perfect example is Isak and Wilson just now. Give everyone 2 FTs in 36 and anyone with a brain cell would get them both and the exact same eleven.

You would just end up with the same core template of 9 or so players, and then everyone bringing in the same 2 players each week, based on form and fixtures. And it would be boring af.

    Great article... thank you.

I agree with everything, except :

I think the team selection dealine should be even earlier in the game week, after the first batch of manager press conferences.

Regarding the proposed deadline change, this statement isn't accurate: "Everyone has the information rather than just those who follow the right Twitter accounts." You need to add the qualifier "and who live in the right time zone." A more equitable arrangement for all would be to move the deadline earlier, not later.
