Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead returns for the 2022/23 season with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundits PrasZophar and FPL Harry,  FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and of course last year’s mini-league winner and overall no.2 Suvansh.

“So many tears we’ve cried. So much pain inside, but baby, it ain’t over ’til it’s over”

The call for last orders may have come yet there is still one final hurdle around the corner, as we prepare ourselves for the carnage of Gameweek 38, where there’s a good chance that some FPL managers will be playing Fantasy five-a-side with all the talk of rests and rotation.

Yet before we start to think about our final weekend flings, we had the excitement of Double Gameweek 37 which became less exciting as events unfolded. Many had put faith in Manchester City players but Arsenal’s loss at Nottingham Forest meant that Mr Guardiola gave a bit of extra welly to the Pep rotation wheel.

Once we had stopped fretting about whether Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) was on the team bus or not we had some unlikely heroes. I don’t think many recommended Casemiro (£4.9m), Stefan Ortega (£3.7m), Christian Eriksen (£6.2m) or Evan Ferguson (£4.6m) before the action started. It makes you wonder who will be the stars on Sunday, knowing Gameweek 38 can be the most random set of results.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Let’s jump into how The Great and The Good fared. Tom Freeman was the top dog and moves back into the top 50k, having made good progress over recent weeks with his combination of template picks and differentials – this time round it was Julio Enciso (£4.6m) that helped him up to 83 points.

Fabio Borges was slightly behind with 82 points – his pick of Julian Alvarez (£6.1m) was a popular one and he rises to 37k. I suspect the target will be to see if he can get above 17k which, unbelievably, is his lowest final overall ranking to date.

At the top of the table, it looks as though FPL Harry will be crowned the greatest of The Great and The Good. Ben Crellin did his best this week by finally playing his Free Hit – which I thought he had forgotten – but it was to no avail, as 62 points now separate them.

Elsewhere, there was a clear split between the chasers and consolidators when it came to captaincy, with those happy with their ranks going with Erling Haaland (£12.4m) and those looking to make a move plumping for Bruno Fernandes (£9.5m), whilst the very aggressive Magnus Carlsen went with Antony (£7.3m) – he was in good company as Lateriser made the same decision.

I suspect tensions are high in the Blackbox household as there are now just six points separating Mark and Az. With Mr Sutherns just ahead, will Mr Phillips risk it all to overtake the Godfather of FPL in this final week, or just go for Dwight McNeil (£5.1m)?

TRANSFERS

The full list of transfers is below:

  • Az – Fernandes, Lewis (Grealish, Moreno)
  • LTFPL Andy – Alvarez (Isak)
  • Ben Crellin – Free Hit
  • Fabio Borges – Alvarez (Watkins)
  • Finn Sollie – No transfers
  • FPL Harry – No transfers
  • Joe Lepper – No transfers
  • Geoff Dance – Estupinan (Trippier)
  • FPL General – Alvarez (Isak)
  • Magnus Carlsen – Antony, Martial (Isak, Rashford)
  • Mark Sutherns – Mahrez, Alvarez (Johnson, Rashford)
  • FPL Matthew – Mahrez (Grealish)
  • Neale Rigg – No transfers
  • Pras – No transfers
  • Suvansh – No transfers
  • Tom Freeman – Shaw (Trippier)
  • Tom Stephenson – Ederson, Shaw (Kepa, Trippier)
  • Zophar – Shaw (Henry)

A split in approach here, with the likes of FPL Harry, Finn, Joe, Pras and Neale rolling their transfers for a bit of final-day fun whilst we saw some take hits to take advantage of the double. Az’s minus four for Fernandes was well judged, Magnus’ hit didn’t quite pay off because of Rashford and Tom Stephenson probably isn’t on speaking terms with Ederson (£5.4m) anymore.

TEMPLATE

It’s as you were for the template, although I imagine the Brighton and Hove Albion contingency will be sacrificed ahead of the weekend and we may even see Haaland finally leave if early team news tells us he is being rested ahead of back-to-back cup finals.

The full details for The Great and The Good is as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

Kepa (12), Raya (7)

Shaw (16), Alexander-Arnold (16), Trippier (12), Estupinan (12), Botman (10)

MacAllister (17), Mitoma (16), Rashford (15), Salah (15), Fernandes (15)

Haaland (18), Isak (11), Greenwood (7)

TRANSFERS IN FOCUS

A canter now through the transfers made during this season, analysed by position to give us a sense of where The Great and The Good have focused their trades.

Az and Geoff have been the most active in the market with 44 moves over the season, driven by the need to gain rank after some poor starts. However, what’s interesting-ish is that the majority of overall transfers have been used in midfield and defence.

Typically, we see the forward lines shuffled the most and the back five left alone but, with the dominance of Haaland, we have seen little need to change attackers. Therefore, the defence has been the best form of attack, with many of us having to rearrange ourselves once the normal defensive darlings of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.8m), Chelsea and Man City options repeatedly let us down.

CONCLUSION

So, there you go. One more weekend before we head off to our own FPL beach with plenty of options to choose from before we apply the suncream – will it be McNeil, Eberechi Eze (£5.7m) or Harry Kane (£11.4m) that takes our fancy?

The main final-day tension amongst The Great and The Good will be who has the Blackbox bragging rights and, of course, I will be starting the lengthy selection process for next year’s intake – which unfortunately looks like it will include FPL Mode.

Whatever the outcome of this weekend and whatever your final pick is, remember it will all be over soon so enjoy the last hurrah and I’ll be back next week to hand out the ‘end of term’ report cards for The Great and The Good.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now but remember – don’t have FPL nightmares.

For those affected by any of the topics raised in the above article then you can find me here on Twitter.

What’s the ultimate free hit team then, usual restrictions apply?
    I reckon cheap keeper
    Trent, trips, Tarkowski
    Salah, rashford, gakpo, Eze,
    Haaland, Kane, Wilson

Leading my main Cash League with 11 and 17 points to number 2 and 3.

We all have Haaland and Mahrez. Crazy to take these two out for Kane and Eze for -4?
I wouldn‘t be suprised if they also get one of Kane and Eze – and maybe both.

I Will also get TAA to Block the other 2.

Get Eze for certain , but don’t help them by taking a negative 8 or anything! Out of Trent or Kane I’d prefer Kane

Yeah, I see that but it's frustrating that the final week comes down to which leaks are forthcoming.

Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd and Newcastle often do.

Guess you've got to play the game.

Dear Fellow Fantasy Football Scout Managers/organisers.

I would like to Thank-you you all for my first year on your chat forum with lots of varied information/advice/topics/some agreed with others not but that is the beauty of a debate.

I have found it a escape room for me in particular this season as unfortunately loss of my mum unexpectantly gave me a portal to forget in a subject related to football I love - I could talk all day on.

I have been playing Premier Fantasy league since 2011/2012 & still learning, this year the most challenging with a split season with the teams / form before the world cup & then afterwards like two season in one.

GW38 as always looking to improve - any tips from all but in particular the top 20K on how to get onto early templates as this season teams so close.

    I’m 2nd in my ML, 6pts behind.

Our starting 11s are practically the same with the exception that I have Raya/Kepa, Fernandes and Alvarez they have De Gea, Grealish and Kane.

Them having Kane pretty much means it’s Game, Set and Match right?

Something left field like Salah & Isak to Son (c) & Firmino -4 worth a punt?

We both have Haaland, obvs. Just do Haaland to Kane and stick the armband on him?

    1. LegendMoon

Cheers, something similar is a consideration but can’t quite stretch to that.

Also consider Fernandes to be one of the more likely starters in this unpredictable GW.

        A dilly of a pickle.

I think he wins as it stands on those differentials. With so few differentials any hit for Kane just makes the deficit 10 points and limits your opportunity for points. I think you've got to bring in different players to him to give more chance of passing

You’re probably right. Don’t fancy my chances especially as it’s likely our benches will come into play and I’m still lumbered with Chilwell.

If I was in your situation, I would risk it all, sell Haaland for Jesus/Firmino/Watkins/Mitrovic/Awoniyi and upgrade one of your midfielders to Son. I would start Raya, Fernandes and Alvarez (your differentials) and hope that they perform well. Choose a striker you fancy the most, even though it's impossible to predict which one will get the most points. You have to follow your gut on this one, but I definitely wouldn't take a hit for the same players your main rival already owns. I would also go with Salah or Son (c) and hope for a brace or a hat-trick.

Why are so many considering selling Bruno?
Even with Salah and Haaland in the team I’m tempted to slam the capital c on Bruno.

Surely ETH wants to battle it out to secure third at home, hence why I think Man U and Newcastle are very good picks this GW.

Moving out Bruno and Isak (who many are thinking about) seems crazy to me!

Well, Isak has been very frustrating to own; Bruno as well if I’m honest. And that was when they were gunning for European spots. Now they’ve achieved their goals, I can understand why folks are selling.

Yes but I think most teams (even with only Shaw flagged) worry about even being able to field XI due to Premier League Beach Party (hosted by Brighton) schedule to begin at 15:00 tomorrow - all teams invited, and a big chunk already transfered the entry fee…

        Risky to buy Eze etc.?
Seen many contemplating buying Eze, Ødegaard and captaining Salah.
U’s wear a diaper if that was me 🙂

Feel like this teams will field a complete or close to a full best XI:

      City - rythm
Man U - rythm, third place
      Newcastle - third place
      Spurs - seventh place
      Villa - seventh place
      Brentford -seventh place
      West Ham - rythm
      Everton - relegation
      Leicester - relegation
      Leeds - relegation

I’d be more likely to trust main players from those teams than Salah, Eze, Ødegaard, Estupinan and so on.
But that might just be me

I think Palace will be full strength - Woy will want a good win to persuade the owners to give him the job full time, and their squad depth is a bit shite. Forest on the other hand have a massive squad they may want to give some game time to others. I have no Palace players at the moment.

I’m 9 points clear in ML, differences are he’s got salah, gakpo, Alvarez, white and was Antony, to my Bruno, Rash, Wilson, Trent and Isak. Should I just cover him off with salah and Alvarez in for -4 leaving it as gakpo v Rash?

Odegaard's price rise?! I'd really like to find out who the geniuses are that are making early transfers on such an important gameweek.

Price changes are completely fixed mate.

What are your thoughts about bringing Odegaard in? I'm hesitant to go near Arsenal players.

Arsenal have to win this one. I believe that Jesus and Odegaard are the best Gunners to buy and they will both get at least one attacking return. That's it.

I made my transfers yesterday, I have no intention of sitting and refreshing twitter on Sunday afternoon to gain a minor advantage for potentially a few more points in a free to play fantasy game

I get your point and I won't be glued to my phone either, but I'll check team news on Sunday morning. It's just one day of difference and you can gain so much information. If I've made my transfers 2 days ago, I'd have doubtful Trossard and Saka in my team now.

Own no other Arsenal, who would you rather get in this week:
    A) Odegaard
    B) Jesus
    Probably in combination with Eze

What are we expecting from Arsenal? They've looked really poor but Odegaard over Jesus for sure.

9 points clear, should I I make any changes here to my team, wanna cover off Salah which my rival has, he also has Alvarez and Gakpo, or should I play my own game?

    Iversen
    Trent, Trips, Shaw*
    Bruno, Rash(V), Mitoma, Grealish*
    Wilson, Isak, Haaland (C)

    Raya, Estupinan, Akanji*, March*

      Isak to Firm
With 9 points lead I wouldn’t be trying to block or take hits

    DDG (Raya)
    TAA Estupinan Trippier (Shaw Botman)
    Salah Rashford Mitoma Mahrez (Mac)
    Haaland Alvarez Isak

What would you do when chasing 8 pts from ML leader?
    A. Shaw > Tarkowski/Gabriel, bench Mahrez
    B. Mahrez > Eze/Odegaard
    C. Mahrez Isak > Eze Watkins (-4)
    D. Mahrez Haaland > Eze Kane [C] (-4)

I have 2 fts. But I have Shaw & Robbo both unlikely to play. Plan is atm

    Robbo to Mina
    Mac10 - Odegaard

But this would leave me with a bench of
    Shaw Schar Greenwood

Should I make 1 more transfer-4 or just make 2 x defensive transfers

    Ederson
    Trippier Estu Schar
    Salah Bruno Rashford Mac10 Gross
    Haaland Wilson

    Raya Robbo Shaw Greenwood

    Thanks a lot

Rashford (FUL) or Eve (NFO) for a one week punt? Not chasing anything in particular - just torn on who scores best!

    How independent are you?
I think characters have been put to the test this year and many could be accused of selling their soul for the highest price.
Maybe I should be put in this category and I never thought my character was so.
Throughout the season I stopped playing the way I used to and made decisions, not based on what I saw but what I was being told.
This cost me points and self respect.
I plumped, as did many for the 8 mil mids on offer at the start of the season (The likes of Bowen, Maddison, Mount and co) This was clearly a mistake but I did not react and get the players on offer who were considerably cheaper ( Almiron, Arsenal assets etc.) that I knew were good judging with my own eyes.
I have since followed up with similar mistakes getting Brighton players because of enabling and the top one of all, Eze who I could see with Roy's first game in charge was playing to his true ability.
With EO that fits in a similar category I ensured my joy of the game was stripped away. I lesson I need to learn.
